Hydrant Flushing Scheduled October 27-29 in Pleasant Hill The Village of Pleasant Hill Public Works Dept. will be flushing and exercising fire hydrants Wednesday thru Friday, Oct. 27-29. This is a vital process to insure hydrants are in good working order for when they are needed most. This will also remove any accumulated sediment that is built up in the pipes and help insure the cleanest water possible. You may experience lower than normal water pressure and a short period of water discoloration during flushing and shortly thereafter. Though the water may be discolored, it’s safe to drink. Should you experience rusty colored water, we suggest you run the cold water from the faucet nearest to the water meter (laundry tub, outside faucet) to flush the service. However, until the water runs clear, it’s advisable to avoid washing clothes, especially white fabrics. If any rust stains appear on your wet laundry, do not dry your clothes. Simply run the cold water in your house or at a hose until it’s clear and then wash clothing again. This will flush any rusty water out of your water service line. Never run warm or hot water immediately after a hydrant has been flushed, as this could lead to sediment getting into your water heater. Normally, rusty water events dissipate in 4-6 hours but could last longer, depending on water usage in the area. The plan is to exercise the hydrants between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. These times may vary.
You’ll invite 20,000+ to your auction or garage sale when you advertise it in our classified pages.

Stillwater Skilled Nursing & Rehab Offers Residents Opportunity To Show Off Their Creativity
EverHeart Hospice Celebrates 40th Anniversary
The Activities Director at Stillwater Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation in Covington recently held a craft project with the residents. The title of the project was “Pumpkin Flowers.” As you can see from this picture, resident Cordelia did an amazing job with her pumpkin and flower arrangement.
EverHeart Hospice, formerly State of the Heart Care, is excited to be celebrating 40 years of caring for patients and families in the community. In 1980, a small group of community members and healthcare professionals met to discuss the idea of starting a hospice program to serve patients facing a life-limiting illness. At the time, there was no such program available for local communities in a rural setting. This idea became a reality in January of 1981, with the official start of Hospice of Darke County, Inc. A total of 27 patients received care during that first year. Forty years later, we have now had the privilege of serving over 16,800 patients during their end-of-life journey. Many aspects of the agency have grown and evolved over the years, from expanding office space from only two rooms in the basement of the Brethren Retirement Community in 1981, to currently having three offices located in Greenville and Coldwater; Winchester, Indiana; and the EverHeart Hospice Care Center located on the fourth floor of Wayne HealthCare. Even through this growth, it is safe to say that the agency’s mission, vision, and values have always remained deeply rooted and consistent. We are proud of our focus on our core values: Patient and Family-Centered, Compassion, Excellence, Integrity, and Community-Focused. With the continuous hard work and dedication of our staff, volunteers, Board members, and generous community support, today we are proud to serve a total of 12 counties in west-central Ohio and east-central Indiana, including Darke, Miami, Preble, Shelby, Mercer, Auglaize, Allen, Van Wert, and Paulding counties in Ohio and Jay, Randolph, and Wayne counties in Indiana. Join us over the next 40 days as we reflect on the past 40 years, sharing the history and stories behind the roots of our organization. You can follow along on our website, www.everhearthospice.org, on our Facebook page, and local media outlets.

Letter to the Editor To the Voters in Newton Local School District: We are so fortunate to have such an excellent school district in our small community. This is due to positive support of the residents. Because of current income, the district is fiscally sound and has not had to ask for new funding sources for 14 years. Please vote to continue what we have by voting “YES” to the renewal of the 0.75% income levy. The second school-related issue on the ballot is election of school board members. This is an important position. School board sets policy and employs the Superintendent and Treasurer to carry out these policies. We believe Jason Tippie is the best candidate to join incumbents Lane Robbins and Matt Downing. Due to decisions made by our Board of Education, Newton Schools offer our students outstanding educational and extracurricular opportunities in a modern, up-to-date building on a beautiful, well maintained campus. Please vote for these three candidates. John & Lolita Schultz

When Gilbert Miller visited the Upper Valley Medical Center Emergency Dept. for a severe headache and problems with his eyes, he received treatment from a specially trained team with expertise to pick out nuances specific to the geriatric population and recognize signs and symptoms of stroke. Miller, 76, said, “When I walked in there, they just took me away. They ran tests and Xrays to try to find out what caused this. The whole time, somebody was asking me if I was alright. It made me feel good, that they cared about me and my problem.” Miller was impressed that he received calls from the hospital after his visit to see if Sarah Coe, geriatriC CliniCal nurSe (left) and Dr. he was seeking follow-up care for what was april anderson, emergency Dept. Medical Director, disdiagnosed as a minor stroke. “I was treated cuss results of a potential stroke patient’s brain scan. well. I respected that.” The UVMC Emergency Dept. was the first in Miami County with an American College of Emergency Physicians Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation. The designation, which dates to 2020, requires not only enhanced staff education but also senior-friendly equipment. The education required to receive this accreditation highlights the physiological changes associated with aging and focuses on how illness and injury may present in unique ways in this group. The staff at UVMC understand the unique needs of geriatric patients. In their facility they offer walkers for patient use, bed alarms for safety, care managers to assist with setting up home health care and nursing home admissions, and much more. UVMC recently earned Advanced Certification as a Primary Stroke Center from The Joint Commission based on continuous compliance with stringent stroke program performance standards and received the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines® Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award.
