The Covington Outreach Association Board of Directors wishes to thank the Covington Church of the Brethren for providing space to us for food pantry operations for the past 15 years. We will continue to disburse food on Fridays from the church until the end of the year. After that time, we must find a new home or make a change in the way we deliver services. We have a few options in the works, but are asking the community to come forward with ideas they may have about a new space for the pantry. We will continue to offer emergency financial assistance for rent and utilities throughout the winter. As the COA begins this new chapter, we ask for your prayers and continued support. Our Christmas Committee is already planning our annual program, which must be carefully adapted to meet current logistical and safety requirements. Until a new Executive Director can be retained, our longserving COA president, Annie Harrison, will serve as Interim Director. You may contact her at 937-552-5620 or director@covingtonoutreach.org. Our mailing address remains P.O. Box 125, Covington, OH 45318.

Ready or not, Christmas is on its way! COA is pleased to announce the details of our 2020 holiday program for Covington families. As a safety measure, this year we will not ask the community to shop for children’s gifts. Instead, our families will be invited to select gifts for their children at “Santa’s Toy Shop” located in Covington Presbyterian Church. The gifts will go home with parents that day along with a choice of assorted Christmas wrapping paper, ribbons, bows and bags so our annual gift-wrapping days at the church will not be held. We will update the community on any needs we may have after participants are registered. We have also scheduled special Kohl’s shopping days with a gift voucher for each child. On Friday and Saturday, Dec. 18 and 19, COA will be distributing a Christmas turkey and dessert to each family, along with a box of pantry staples. Pick-up will be outside the Church of the Brethren. Volunteers are needed to help, so please reach out to us to get signed up. Registration for the Christmas program is open thru Wednesday, Nov. 25. To register, please e-mail director@covingtonoutreach.org with your name, telephone number, and the best time of day to reach you. A volunteer will follow up with a call to gather family information and answer any questions. Current proof of residency in Covington and financial documentation is required. We will be posting updates and reminders on Facebook, so please stay tuned!
Annie’s G.A.L.A. Hits the Bullseye For Garst Museum Thanks to the creative thinking and diligent work of devoted volunteers, Annie’s G.A.L.A. proved to be a success story! Annie’s Star-Spangled Gala has been a long-standing annual fundraiser for the Garst Museum and normally takes place in June. Due to circumstances surrounding COVID, many things had to change in order to keep the fundraiser on the calendar for 2020. This included the new date of October 3, a different name—Annie’s G.A.L.A (Garst Alternative to the Live Auction), an event website, and pre-ordered dinners that were picked up in the new Garst Museum parking lot. But, the energy and anticipation did not change. Eager bidders filled the Lowell Thomas Gallery watching the final offers for items mount before the auction closed and waiting for the beach-house drawing winner to be announced. Much excitement of the auction surrounded the competitive bidding on a Bob Brubaker painting, donated by Park National Bank, depicting a fort scene of what might have occurred in the days of General Anthony Wayne. And, the lucky winner of the drawing for the one-week Florida stay in the Ft. Myers’ home, donated by Mike and Sherri Jones, was Bonnie Perry. It’s the enthusiastic support of the people of Darke County and the generous corporate sponsorships and donations that made Annie’s G.A.L.A. a success. The Garst Museum wishes to thank Aim Midwest Media for their Premier Sponsorship.

3 S. Miami St. West Milton " "#!
Veterans Program Held at Hoffman UMC – 95-Year-Old WWII Veteran/Author Gives Moving Presentation – On Sunday, Nov. 8, Hoffman United Methodist Church in West Milton hosted a military banner retirement program. These are the Hometown Heroes banners displayed on utility poles on St. Rt. 48. There are currently 156 banners displayed and they will soon be taken down for the winter months. Banners are retired after five years and sponsors have the opportunity to purchase a new one. Forty-three retired banners were on display in the activity center. Following the invocation by Pastor Robbie Scott, the Star Spangled Banner was sung by Arielle Haynes. The remainder of the program was carried out by veterans from various branches of our Armed Forces. Dennis Albaugh and Rec Carpenter gave short but challenging and insightful speeches. Dan Studebaker recited an updated version of the Gettysburg Address. A power point program, developed by Norman Hiester, displayed pictures and names of Union Township veterans past and present. Chris Long read the names from the banners being retired. While Dennis Albaugh and Jim Wright folded the flag, Dr. Cliff Poling read what each part of the flag stands for and what the 13 folds of the flag represent. The program closed with the playing of Taps by Jim Wright and prayer by Tim Studebaker. Main speaker was D. Ralph Young, a 95-year-old veteran of WW II. Mr. Young gave a very interesting and moving speech along with a slide presentation about his involvement in the invasion of several beaches in the Pacific. He is a very spry, sharp, and pleasant individual who wants people to know about those who fought in these battles. Information about his book, Forgotten Warriors: The Amphibious March Across the Pacific, can be found on the Internet. Organizers of the program would like to thank Fire Chief David Jay for arranging for the Fire Department to display their large American flag from the top of their ladder truck. It always makes a beautiful display. The program can be viewed on West Milton's public access station (channel 5), on YouTube under wmpatv, as well as on Hoffman UMC’s Facebook page.
Rotary of West Milton Celebrates 75th Anniversary Friday, Oct. 23, was a very special day for the West Milton Rotary, as it celebrated its 75th Anniversary. District Gov. Greg Birkemeyer (left) presented a certificate to Rotary President Dr. Brad Ritchey.

Skipp Miller Signs to Play Softball at Ohio University Skipp Miller, daughter of Skip and Sommer Miller, signed her letter of intent to play softball for Ohio University. Throughout her softball career she has had much success, playing competitive travel softball all across the country for teams like the Cincy Doom, Ohio Hawks, and Beverly Bandits. Her softball accolades are impressive, considering she has only had one true high school season: 1st team CCC 2018; 1st team All District 2018; 1st team All State 2018; CCC Player of the Year 2018; District and Regionals Champions 2018; and State Final Four 2018. Skipp also holds the following softball records: Most Strikeouts in a Season and Lowest Season ERA (both 2018) Bradford Head Softball Coach Shon Schaffer had this to say about Skipp: "With her attitude and work ethic, there is no doubt she will be successful at OU and beyond. That's what it's all about!" Skipp is a very well rounded athlete, having won many awards in Cross Country and Basketball. She was CCC Runner of the Year in 2018 and 2020, 1st Team CCC 2017 and 2019, and part of the 2018 team that qualified for state. In basketball she earned 2nd Team CCC in 2017 and 2018, was 2nd Team All District in 2017, and State Honorable Mention in 2017. Skipp also set the record for Most Rebounds in a Season in 2018. When asked why she chose Ohio University, Skipp had this to say: "I personally like the atmosphere of OU, it’s a big school that has a small town feel, plus the campus is beautiful. I also really liked the coaches and the team. I know I’ll be pushed and have fun doing so.” The Bradford community is very proud of Skipp, and we can't wait to see her as an OU Bobcat!
Halloween Fun at Koester Pavilion! Jessica Fox, Activities Director at Koester Pavilion, UVMC - Troy, knows how to throw a good party. And when it comes to designing and building “haunted houses,” she is second to none. “Due to COVID-19, we couldn’t have Trick or Treaters this year,” said Fox, “so I gave the residents some options of what we could do in lieu of having the kids come to our facility. They chose to have a haunted house!” Fox spent about two months designing the house and collecting decorations. James Keyser and Robert Contento from the Maintenance Dept. spent a day and a half building it out of pallets and wood supports. The wooden pallets were graciously donated by Patty Moore, who heads up “Project Launch” at Koester Pavilion, a program geared towards teaching job skills and preparing students to be successful in the workforce “Hope we do this next year,” one resident exclaimed. “Amazing! This was so neat,” said another, which captured the essence of the feelings from all who attended. As to the residents’ reaction to the creepy things that go bump in the night: “One of the residents, upon seeing the walking, talking spider, reached over and petted it,” said Fox.
Olivia Daugherty Signs To Run XC & Track at Bluffton Olivia Daugherty, daughter of Bob and Sarah Daugherty, has committed to run Cross Country and Track at Bluffton University. She is a four year letter winner for Bradford XC, and three year letter winner for track. Olivia was part of the 2018 CCC Championship team that went on to be District Runners Up and qualify for State. Olivia placed 3rd in the 3200 and was part of the 4x800 team that placed 2nd in the 2018 CCC Track Meet. Livy had this to say about her coaches: "I would like to thank Coach Grillot, Coach Beachler, Coach Schwieterman, and my dad for pushing me every day at practice and at meets. I would not be competing at the collegiate level if it were not for them and I would not be the runner I am today. I would also like to thank my family for always being there for me and supporting me throughout my career." When asked why she picked Bluffton, Livy said: "I chose Bluffton because as soon as I stepped foot on campus it felt like home and the more I visited, the more comfortable I felt. I clicked really well with Coach Wells and the rest of the team and that solidified my decision. I’m looking forward to seeing how much more I can grow as an athlete.” Olivia will also be the second member of her family to attend Bluffton, as her father is a 1998 graduate. Olivia is the epitome of a student athlete. She takes CCP classes through Edison and spends much time in the Bradford building, volunteering in the Athletic Dept. and front office. We at Bradford are very proud of Livy and can’t wait to see her transition from a Bradford Railroader to a Bluffton Beaver!

Children under the age of 10 are exempt. 5) If you don’t have a mask, one will be provided for you. 6) If you have written medical directions for not wearing a mask, signed by a doctor, please bring them with you. 7) Social distancing rules will be followed at all times. 8) Hand sanitizer is available upon arrival in the north foyer and is to be used by all patrons before entering the main library – adults and children alike. 9) The total number of patrons will be 45 at any one time in the library, with a 45-minute visit enforced. 10) All evening and group events are canceled until further notice from the Governor’s office. 11) If a patron doesn’t want to enter the library during these changes, “window service” will be available by the north doors. Please knock to let our staff know you are present. 12) Anyone the age of 14 and under needs to be accompanied by an adult. 13) All library services will be available for the community, organizations, and schools.
