Newton Alumni Banquet Canceled With consideration of the safety of all of our Alumni, and that COVID19 vaccines haven’t been administered completely, we have made the difficult decision to cancel Newton’s 140th Banquet which was to be held in May. We had hoped to honor two sets of Honored Classes: For 2020 – 1945 (75 years), 1960 (60 years), 1970 (50 years), 1980 (40 years), and 1995 (25 years); and For 2021 – 1946 (75 years), 1961 (60 years), 1971 (50 years), 1981 (40 years), and 1996 (25 years). We plan to have a Facebook page and a newsletter sent out in the very near future We want to encourage each class to gather on your own to share stories of your Newton days as you visit with each other. Gathering in smaller numbers will definitely be a safer option.

As we’ve said many times, the Stillwater Valley Advertiser is not a newspaper in the sense most think of a newspaper. The key is in our name – AdVertiSer. This publication relies on paid advertising to generate income for printing/postage costs, staff salaries, and building/equipment maintenance. However, the Advertiser is pleased to be of service to the community by offering open space – when available – to help our readers share news they feel is of interest to the community, such as engagements, weddings, milestone birthdays and anniversaries, birth announcements, five generation pictures, Vacation Bible Schools, library programs, school and club events, etc. If an organization, even nonprofits like Veterans organizations, charge for a steak, chicken, or fish fry, we can’t offer free advertising to them, as their event competes with area restaurants who do pay for display advertising. Churches also compete with restaurant advertisers when they host Chili and Spaghetti Dinners, etc. The key is in what is done with the funds generated. For example, a church hosting a dinner to raise money for a new organ would be charged to advertise that event. However, if the church is hosting a dinner to benefit a family experiencing a health crisis or who have lost their home in a fire, the Advertiser waives the cost of advertising as our contribution to the effort. Those wishing to advertise an event that does charge an admittance fee can do so by including that information in our Calendar of Events for just $15 per week. If you question whether or not your event qualifies for free advertising, feel free to call our office at 937-473-2028, Monday thru Friday, 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Our helpful staff will be happy to assist you, or will direct your call to Gary Godfrey, president of Arens Corporation.
Sign-ups continue for our SOup SwAp! This event will be held Saturday, March 13, from 11-noon. Come in to sign up and get your containers and recipe card. Bring your soup the day of the swap in the containers provided, along with your recipe to share. Each participant will choose the soups they would like to take home along with a recipe booklet for all the soups brought that day. Last year’s swap was great fun! Don’t wait to sign up as we are limited to 10 participants. Our AmeriCAN GirL pArTy is planned for April 10. We are later in the year holding this event to ensure all safety measures can be met. Girls in grades K-5 may sign up for one time slot, either 10:30-11:30 or noon-1:00. Our young ladies may bring along an older helper to assist with crafts (one helper per participant, please). Helpers may be high school students, an older sibling, parent, grandparent, aunt, etc. Girls will have their photo taken with their doll(s) in a very special backdrop, enjoy crafts, games, and a special treat. Goodie bags and door prizes will be given. Sign-ups are limited to 10 young ladies per time slot. Registration is required (no exceptions) so we can plan accordingly. Call the library at 937-448-2612 to register.
Newton FCCLA Takes On Distractive Driving Newton FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) students are raising awareness that distractions have on driving safely. According to NHTSA, one of every 10 fatal crashes in the U.S. involves distraction, resulting in more than 3,000 deaths per year. Statistics show teen drivers are 44% more likely to text while driving. We realize this is true with the student drivers at our school. They were awarded a $1,000 grant from Families Acting for Community Traffic Safety (FACTS). The project involved educating our community about the dangers of distractive driving. The Newton FCCLA Officer Team, consisting of Natalee Carlin, Regina Mikalauskas, Luke Vannus, Hannah Beidelman, Jaden Stine, and Kelley Armentrout worked together on this project entitled, “Life Is Short….Don’t Make It Shorter”. The entire student body of Newton High School was surveyed to determine their knowledge of the problem. Through announcements, stall talks, posters, and a highway billboard, the student body was made aware of the dangers of distractive driving. They were then challenged to take a pledge to help eliminate distracted driving. Family members also were encouraged to take the pledge. Newton FCCLA will continue to educate our community by highlighting state driving laws and creating a widespread concern about distractions that can occur while driving. After all, it’s all about saving lives.
