Kudos to the beautification crew that cleaned and trimmed the shrubbery, grass, and trees around the Covington Government Center. The workers I saw were Marie Martin, Bret and Amy Welborn, and Bertha Moist. If there were others, I’m sorry I did not get your names. It was HOT-HOT-HOT, and it was a job well done! Also, the mulch was donated by another concerned citizen/business owner. KEEP SAFE, KEEP WELL Sincerely yours, James Roger O’Donnell, Attorney at Law

ggg Card Shower Announced Eugene (Gene) E. Baker was born August 8, 1921, the son of the late David and Kate Jane (Cordier) Baker. Gene has lived in the Laura area all his life, with the only exception being the time he spent serving his country with the Army Air Corps during WWII. After the war he returned to Laura, and in 1946 married the late J. Jean (Hunt) Baker. They raised three children in the village. Gene worked and retired from Frigidaire/Harrison Radiator-GM in Dayton after 45 years of service. During that same time he also served as a volunteer and member of the Laura Fire Company. Over the years he also served in numerous offices, positions, and activities with the Village of Laura and the Laura Christian Church. Gene enjoys precious time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Gene’s children, along with their families, feel so very blessed to be able to celebrate his 100th Birthday with him. At his request, no open house will be held. However, if you would like to surprise Gene with a card, note, or special memory of him, please mail to:

Ohio’s Hospice of Miami Co. Seeks Volunteers

HELP WANTED

As construction of Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County’s Hospice House nears completion, the notfor-profit hospice is recruiting volunteers for its new inpatient care center, scheduled to open this summer. “We’re looking for volunteers for our world-class Hospice House,” said Amy LeVan, director of Volunteer Services. “They will greet patient families, assist them, and escort them to their loved ones’ rooms.” Hospice House volunteers also will bring a hospitality cart to patients and families to help make them more comfortable during their stay. They will stop at patient rooms to offer refreshments, coloring pages for children, and comfort items for patients, such as puzzles, magazines, and stuffed animals. Located at 3230 N. Co. Rd. 25A in Troy, the new facility will have 12 patient-care rooms, an interfaith chapel, spa room, private meeting spaces for families, and a large family room. Patient rooms will feature exterior doors that allow views and access to the outdoors. The Hospice House will provide a home-like environment for patients with symptom management needs while receiving hospice care, as well as house the administrative offices to support the entire interdisciplinary care team. The new building also will have space for staff training and community support and education. Volunteers provide a variety of services for the patients and families of Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County. Visiting with patients, delivering supplies, assisting with office duties, and making keepsake items for patients and families are just a few ways volunteers donate their time. In addition, Veteran volunteers assist with Veteran recognition ceremonies as part of the American Pride® Veteran Care by Ohio’s Hospice program. Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County will hold small, socially distanced training classes in June and July for the new Hospice House volunteer positions. COVID-19 guidelines will be followed, and face masks will be required. After completing their training, the volunteers will start in August. Those interested must be older than 18 and provide references. A background check also will be conducted. For more information, please contact Beth Shrake at EShrake@HospiceofMiamiCounty.org or 937-335-5191.

Art of Recovery Returns to Edison Gallery The Tri-County Board of Recovery and Mental Health Services is seeking entries from local artists for its annual Art of Recovery exhibit, which will return to the Art Gallery on Edison State Community College's campus October 4-29, after being forced into a virtual format in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s in this spirit that the 2021 Art of Recovery has the theme of "Emergence." Art may depict or be inspired by the emergence from lockdown conditions, from the specter of pandemic, or from a more personal perspective of emergence from addiction or from mental health crisis. Artists who have been affected personally, through a family member or friend, or anyone whose art reflects recovery from mental illness or addiction are invited to participate. Artists display works ranging from painting and drawing to sculpture, mixed media, crafts, photography and poetry. Artists typically reside in Darke, Miami, and Shelby counties, although submissions from other counties are welcomed. Artists can find the submission form and additional details at the Tri-County Board’s website, tcbmds.org/art. Artists will upload photos of their work along with descriptions. Tri-County Board staff will then review art for inclusion in the gallery, and artists will be contacted about how, when, and where to deliver their works. Art may be in any medium, including – but not limited to – painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, needlework, crafts, instrumental music, poetry, and mixed media. Artists may submit more than one piece for submission, and may elect to remain anonymous at the showcase. There is no fee to enter, and no prizes are awarded. For the gallery exhibit, three certificates will be awarded. Best in Show will be determined by the judges based on artistic merit, People’s Choice will be awarded based on popular vote, and the Director’s Choice will be selected by Tri-County Board staff for the piece that best exemplifies wellness and recovery. For more information, visit the Tri-County Board’s website or contact Reed at ReedB@tcbmds.org or 937-335-7727, Ext 209.
