Covington Outreach Announces Expanded Back-to-School Program The Covington Outreach Association is excited to share the details of our expanded Back-to-School program. As in years past, we will provide each student, including preschoolers, with a backpack and grade level supplies. This year, we are hosting Shoes for the Shoeless, a Dayton area non-profit which provides children with properly fitted shoes and socks. The mobile shoe store will be in Covington on Thursday, August 5, at 10 a.m. Additionally, we are offering free haircuts at several area salons and barber shops. Let’s plan to start our kids off to a great year in school. From head to toe, they’ll be ready to go! Covington residents may register now thru July 21 to participate in this program. For more information on how to register your family or how to volunteer, please contact us at neighbor@covingtonoutreach.org or 937-541-5581.

It Was An Impressive Memorial Day HoMetoWn Heroes rIDe Memorial Day 2021 dawned with a cool morning offering a beautiful sunrise of shades of purples and pinks. At 8 a.m. on May 31, a patriotic detachment of motorcycle riders rode for a special mission from Bradford to Union Township. Approximately 33 bikes, with perhaps 60 individuals or biker club members, enthusiastically gathered to remember the fallen heros of our military, police, firefighters, and their families. Destinations for these bikers included Wheelock, Laura, and Potsdam cemeteries. Local ministers at each location conducted the invocations and solemn services. Youth was represented by a young Girl Scout
and a Cub Scout, who laid a wreath. A Color Guard performed. Two teen boys ceremonially played TAPS... 26 musical notes, which always touches our hearts. The Hometown Heroes Biker Parade also touched our hearts as they IMPRESSIVELY rolled out of the cemeteries. If it weren’t for the brave souls being remembered and honored by this MOST IMPORTANT day, we couldn’t have the pleasures of the other holidays. We should keep this in our minds and our hearts as the HOMETOWN HEROES are doing.
Thank You, Bikers!

Join us Monday, July 12, 6-8 p.m., for this month’s Young Birders’ Club. With birds now on their nesting grounds we shift our focus from observing birds that are migrating through to increasing our understanding of what and how Ohio’s nesting birds are doing. This month we will visit Brukner’s River’s Edge Property and check bluebird boxes for nesting activity. We hope to find not just Eastern bluebirds, but also tree swallows and purple martins. With our remaining time we will travel the Cascades loop trail in search of nests hidden within the branches of the trees. The Young Birders’ Club is geared for students in Grades 6-12 with an interest in birding. High quality binoculars and field guides are provided for meetings and field trips. For additional information, please contact Brian at brian@bruknernaturecenter.com.
