Tom Hissong Displays Nature Photography At Troy-Hayner Cultural Center Miami County Park District naturalist Tom Hissong will display his nature photography as part of the “Nature’s Wonders at the Miami County Park District” exhibit at the Troy-Hayner Cultural Center thru May 9 during regular business hours. “We are very thankful to the staff at Troy-Hayner Cultural Center working with us to share Tom’s photos. We are fortunate to have a such a wonderful place for art of all kinds to be displayed in our community,” said J. Scott Myers, executive director of the Miami County Park District. The exhibit features photos of plants and wildlife in various county parks. "The Miami County Park District's many beautiful parks hold fantastic year-round natural treasures for nature photographers. I visit the parks throughout the entire year so that I can be outdoors to look for subjects for my photographic images. Spring brings delicate wildflowers and many colorful migratory birds, summer is a time for frogs, turtles, butterflies and nesting birds, fall is color all around – everywhere you look, and winter brings a soft peaceful, snow-covered landscape. I enjoy all of the parks for their wonderful, maintained trails and diversity of habitats at each,” said Hissong. “I am honored to be able to display my photographs at the wonderful Troy-Hayner Cultural Center,” said Hissong. “It is important to have a place where people can share their artistic works with the people of the Troy and Miami County community. I hope that people who view my photographic images will go away with a deeper appreciation for the natural world and for the rich diversity of life found in the Miami County Park District's parks."

Do You Have News to Share? As we’ve said many times, the Stillwater Valley Advertiser is not a newspaper in the sense most think of a newspaper. The key is in our name – AdVertiSer. This publication relies on paid advertising to generate income for printing/postage costs, staff salaries, and building/equipment maintenance. However, the Advertiser is pleased to be of service to the community by offering open space – when available – to help our readers share news they feel is of interest to the community, such as engagements, weddings, milestone birthdays and anniversaries, birth announcements, five generation pictures, Vacation Bible Schools, library programs, school and club events, etc. If an organization, even non-profits like Veterans organizations, charge for a steak, chicken, or fish fry, we can’t offer free advertising to them, as their event competes with area restaurants who do pay for display advertising. Churches also compete with restaurant advertisers when they host Chili and Spaghetti Dinners, etc. The key is in what is done with the funds generated. For example, a church hosting a dinner to raise money for a new organ would be charged to advertise that event. However, if the church is hosting a dinner to benefit a family experiencing a health crisis or who have lost their home in a fire, the Advertiser waives the cost of advertising as our contribution to the effort. Those wishing to advertise an event that does charge an admittance fee can do so by including that information in our Calendar of Events for just $15 per week. If you question whether or not your event qualifies for free advertising, feel free to call our office at 937-473-2028, Monday thru Friday, 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Our helpful staff will be happy to assist you, or will direct your call to Gary Godfrey, president of Arens Corporation.

BHS Community Blood Drive Set April 15 Stop Waiting, Start Giving This Spring Bradford High School will host a community blood drive Thursday, April 15, 3-7 p.m., in the auditorium, 750 Railroad Ave. The blood drive is open to all eligible students, staff, parents, and community members. Register to donate and get the new “Stop Waiting, Start Giving” T-shirt. Make an appointment at www.DonorTime.com or call 937-461-3220. There is no deferral or delay in donating blood after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. Many necessary pandemic precautions remain in place and continue to impact blood collection, along with the traditional challenges of spring vacations and increased outdoor activities. CBC has declared 2021 “Blood Donor Year” and is challenging eligible members of the community to give blood at least three times this year. CBC has ended collection of COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma and is encouraging former CCP donors and others to consider donating whole blood, double red blood cells, or platelets. Call 937-461-3220 for more information on what donation may be best for you.
