Parents, be sure to review these important bus safety tips with young riders and drivers to keep kids safe this school year. 5 School Bus Safety Tips for Motorists
10 School Bus Safety Tips for Kids
1. Know that yellow flashing lights signal that a school bus is preparing to stop. Red flashing lights and a stop sign indicate the bus is stopped, and children are entering or exiting.
1. Get to the bus stop early, and wait in a safe place at least five giant steps away from the edge of the road.
2. Never pass a school bus that is stopping or stopped to load or unload children. It is unsafe and illegal. 3. Stop your vehicle a safe distance of at least 10 feet from a stopped school bus. 4. Once the flashing red lights and stop sign have been turned off by the bus driver, proceed slowly and with caution, looking both ways for children who may still be close to the road. 5. While driving, never pass a school bus on the right. It is dangerous and against the law.
%
3. Enter the bus single file, and be sure to hold the handrail. 4. Walk straight to your seat, and sit with your legs facing forward. 5. Speak quietly, so you don’tdistract the bus driver. 6. Keep the bus aisles clear, and keep your arms and head inside the bus. 7. Raise your hand if you need to get the bus driver’s attention. 8. Look left, right and left again before exiting the bus or crossing the street.
% !
2. Wait until the bus stops, the door opens and the driver says it’s okay before you approach the bus.
9. Always cross the street at least 10 feet in front of the bus. Never cross behind the bus.
!
10. If you drop something near or under the bus, tell the driver. Never try to pick it up yourself.

Letter to the Editor I am writing to strongly endorse and urge every citizen of Covington to support Ed McCord for the office of Mayor. I have known Ed for over 15 years and have found him to be honest, reliable, and visionary in his endeavors to make Covington a better place for all citizens of our village. Ed has been fiscally responsible and has been instrumental in bringing over $5M dollars in grants for improvements to our village. He has worked diligently to make both infrastructure and scenic improvements to the appearance of our town. Some time ago, we had a flooding program on our street. Ed responded by coming to our area late at night and surveyed the situation. In a rapid response, he took action to alleviate the situation and followed up with a plan for a long-term solution. We have not experienced the problem since. Ed had implemented major administrative improvements that are often not noticed by citizens. He has improved the use of technology within village offices, making the operation more efficient. Utility bills can now be received by e-mail and paid online, by automatic payment, or by phone. All of these things assure me that Ed McCord is the best choice for the future of Covington. He has good ideas and then takes positive action to implement those ideas for the betterment of our village. Ed is good for Covington and is well deserving of re-election. Steve Wesco
Butchering Tools Displayed in October At Tippecanoe Historical Society Museum If it’s fall, it must be butchering time! For October the revolving display case in the Tippecanoe Historical Society Museum will feature tools used in the butchering process. For those familiar with this, it will bring back memories. For those who are not, there is a notebook of pictures and explanations of how things used to be done down on the farm. Be sure to stop by and check it out! The museum is located on the southeast corner of 3rd and Walnut Sts. in Tipp City. Hours are Wednesday 2-4 and Saturday 10-12, or by appointment year round (weather permitting during the winter months).
All STEAMers Welcome at J.R. Clarke Public Library! Every second and fourth Tuesday from 12:30 - 2 p.m., homeschooling students and their parents and teachers are welcome to join the J.R. Clarke STEAMers class, where we will explore hands-on activities involving; Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math. October's topic will be "Moving Things." Instructors are very well qualified – a retired science teacher who is on the staff of the Miami County Park District and an engineer who loves to find out how "things" work and create them himself! Both instructors try to integrate these subject areas in many ways so that student understanding will become more developed. The library is located at 102 E. Spring St., Covington. Students eight years of age and older are welcome as well as their parents. Call the library, 937-473-2226, for additional information.
Word Limit Set for Letters to the Editor Occasionally we receive Letters to the Editor which are far too lengthy for publication. Letters of 250 words or less will fit comfortably into a 1/8 page size (twice the width of this article). Letters to the Editor will be published as available space allows. Those wishing to write a lengthier letter or wanting to guarantee their letter will be published in a specific edition, are welcome to run paid display advertising. All letters must be signed and a daytime phone number provided for verification.
Thank You

Letter to the Editor I write this letter in support of the Pleasant Hill – Newton Township Joint Fire District. I have tremendous respect and gratitude for all the wonderful people over many years who have volunteered their services to operate our fire department and rescue squad. These courageous volunteers have responded to countless calls of someone in desperate need of help! How can we ever thank them for putting out a fire, saving a life, or running out of their son or daughter’s game when responding to another emergency?! I can only imagine the amount of time required of our volunteers to be able to support the operation of a fire station and emergency medical services. Constant training to acquire necessary skills and to maintain those skills requires precious time that could be spent with family. They also raise funds through various fundraising activities to offset the cost of very expensive equipment. In short, they give much of themselves to serve our community! With the demands of everyday life and supporting their family, those who once volunteered no longer can. I hope you will join me in supporting the Joint Fire District levy. Our community has always supported the school and other public services when the need was obvious! Our Joint Fire District has an obvious need! Times have changed. We can’t support a modern day fire and rescue department as if it’s still 1970. On the morning of Friday, November 25, 2016, the day after Thanksgiving, my dear 92-year-old mother developed a massive blood clot in her right arm. She was in excruciating pain and we knew that this was a life threatening situation. A call was made to 911 and the dispatcher dropped a tone for the Pleasant Hill Rescue Squad to respond. Because of the holiday, only one volunteer EMT was available to make the run. Obviously the EMT couldn’t drive the ambulance and tend to my mother’s medical needs so my brother drove his personal car to the emergency room with the EMT and my mom in the back seat. We blame no one as no one did anything wrong. As a matter of fact, our family was extremely appreciative of the EMT for the courage, skill, and compassion she demonstrated under pressure. She was great! Despite the EMT’s best effort, and those of the doctors’ at MVH, my mom died 13 days later. This event was more than enough to convince me that our community should provide the kind of financial support necessary to enable our fire department and rescue squad to properly staff the department at all times. There is also a need for newer and better equipment. I strongly support the Newton Joint Fire District Levy and I hope everyone in our community will vote “FOR” this tax levy. Pat McBride

Letter to the Editor Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 5, and I ask for your support in reelecting Mayor Ed McCord. As president of the Covington Chamber of Commerce, I support Ed’s efforts in promoting the growth of the Covington business community and drawing families to our village. Some accomplishments within the village are: 1) KEC America, Inc. manufacturing facility now occupies a building which sat empty for an extended period of time. 2) Marias Technology multi-million dollar expansion, to include preservation of retail space in the downtown area. 3) County Line Auto Sales revitalization of business property on West Broadway. 4) Casey’s General Store construction to begin soon. 5) Broadway Service and Tires serving as an example of a business owner reinvesting in the village. 6) Sweet Treats ice cream store to begin construction soon. 7) Perrigo mult-million dollar expansion to provide more employment opportunities in our village. 8) Resource Once business expansion. 9) Village administration is continuing to work on the downtown renovation district to incentivize the re-birth of downtown Covington. All of these great achievements have been made possible by having a strong Mayor who is able to work alongside the Village Administrator, Council members, and business owners with one goal in mind: To make the Village of Covington grow and prosper, both for its business owners and its families who call Covington “home.” Please join me in supporting Ed McCord as the mayoral candidate for the Village of Covington. Sincerely, Glen Hollopeter
Letter to the Editor We’re writing in support of Ed McCord, who is our current mayor and seeking re-election. We’ve not only had the opportunity of knowing Ed personally for many years, we’ve also witnessed his leadership skills. Ed, his wife Lisa, and their families are investing their lives in our community. Mayor McCord, our village administrator, and our Council have worked together cooperatively to bring about improvements and positive changes throughout our community through grants, infrastructure, recreation, protection, and safety. This is a very important election for the future of our village. We urge you to join us in casting a vote November 5 for Mayor Ed McCord so the projects not yet completed can be realized.
