Covington Church of the Brethren’s annual fall fundraiser, featuring homemade chicken and noodles and freshly baked apple dumplings, is coming up. Scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 9, serving will begin at 11 a.m. and will continue until all are sold out, which usually occurs before 5 p.m. The noodles are prepared from a tried and true recipe first developed years ago as the church’s festival booth offering. The apple dumplings are homemade, too, by an accomplished baker who has been providing them from the beginning years ago. They are simply the best! Soft drinks, coffee, and bottled water also will be available, plus ice cream to go along with the apple dumplings. The public is invited to come and eat in the dining hall or carryout or both! The church is located at the corner of Wall and Wright Sts., and is handicapped accessible from the Wall St. entrance. An elevator goes to the lower level where the dining hall is located. The other entrance will be at the Wright St. door, which leads directly to a stairway down to the dining hall. For more details, please e-mail covingtoncob@gmail.com or call 937-473-2415.

HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS SCORES
– COMMENTS FROM THE COACH – It was a great night to be a Buccaneer! We came in as an underdog on paper and went to the game with extra motivation with them being undefeated. We played with a chip on our shoulder to prove that we are a really good football team. We are extremely proud of our boys’ relentless effort. It was a complete team effort! We played well in all three phases of the game – Offense, Defense, and Special Teams. Offensively, we executed well and scored many points and defense got another touchdown and another shutout, which is very difficult to accomplish. We got a safety on Special Teams, as well. Every player got in the game and we came out pretty healthy. This game put us in position to make the playoffs with gaining many computer points to put us as 5th in the region. As long as we keep winning one week at a time we have a very high chance of making the playoffs, which is one of our goals!

Voters in the Covington Exempted Village School District will be asked to support a renewal income tax on the November 5 ballot that does not raise taxes. The 1.25 percent income tax would allow the district to continue providing high quality educational programming for every student, with highly-trained and caring staff members, 1-to-1 technology programs, rewarding extracurricular activities, and more. While those who oversee the district continue to make conservative financial decisions, maximizing every dollar, supporting the levy would help bring sustained financial stability. Remember that public schools are the heart of any community and a worthwhile investment. Letter to the Editor Voting Yes for Library Levy Good for Community When I moved to West Milton 25 years ago I had no friends here and didn’t know a soul. The first place I went was the Milton-Union Public Library. The library opened my eyes to this wonderful community. I became active in The New Friends of the Milton-Union Public Library and have loved every minute. Did you know that your Milton-Union Public Library... • Serves almost 10,000 residents • Has 7,118 registered borrowers • Registered 361 people for the 2019 summer reading program, including 240 children, 53 teens, and 68 adults • Had 403 different programs in 2018 • Extends weekly outreach programs to MUECC, Headstart, Milton-Union Preschool, and Good Shepherd Preschool • Checked out almost 99,000 items, both physically and electronically in 2018 This library is so valuable to our community. You can register to vote, find facts about your family in the genealogy room, read the latest newspapers locally and beyond, or learn a new language. Each and every program and service offered by the Milton-Union Public Library is important and meets a need within the community. In order to maintain and improve upon this level of service and programming, the library needs the support of the community. This is a 0.7 mill renewal levy over five years and is about 25% of library revenue. That means no new taxes! Please join me in voting YES for the Milton-Union Public Library Levy on November 5th! Sincerely, Kim Parks, President New Friends of the Milton-Union Public Library
Letter to the Editor November 5 is NATIONAL ELECTION DAY. While it may be an “off year” for many offices, it is an ON year for Mayor Ed McCord for our village. We all need to re-elect Mayor Ed and keep his programs going to keep our village progressing. Mayor Ed is serving his third term as mayor (#1 he was chosen to fill an unexpired term, and #2 and #3 elected terms). Ed has also served as a member of Council. During his terms he has overseen a much-needed sidewalk replacement program, with the help of the State of Ohio – “Safe Routes to School,” the reconstruction of Spring and Walnut Streets, and resolved the east end flooding problem. An important project was obtaining an SRO for our great schools – funding partly from grants and promoting cooperation between the schools and the village. Mayor Ed and Council developed a comprehensive Park Plan and the Basketball Court Renovation, providing some space to relax and get some exercise. Yes, I realize that the cost of living in Covington has gone up, BUT much of that cost is the result of mandates from the State of Ohio and EPA (all without proving funds). To eventually help offset that is the reconstruction of High Street (increased traffic flow and people) and the downtown revitalization program. Ed is a family man, married (35 years) and has three children. He is a graduate of OU with a B.S. in Education and a Master’s degree from Wright State. Vote for and retain Mayor Ed McCord on November 5!
Letter to the Editor We are writing this in support of the re-election of Ed McCord for Mayor of Covington. We do not offer this lightly. We have listened to all sides and truly feel that Ed McCord is the right person. Covington needs updating, but those updates do not happen overnight. Under Ed’s leadership, perseverance, and guidance, good things have already been put in place and good things coming. We have $5 million in grants awarded to put towards updates in Covington. We have an uptown that will begin a whole new renovation. Along with that they have plans to update the basketball courts and put a park in the middle of town. The list goes on. What we also enjoy is the personable side to his family in the community. They attend sporting events and you can see their support provided to the fire department and police department. They have grandchildren growing up in this community, so they understand the importance of having places for your kids and their parents to visit. They honestly care and understand on a personal side and community side that our town is a great town. Does it need some updating in certain areas? Yes, and that is why Ed has been fighting to get these great things approved and moving forward. We think to elect someone new would hinder the progress started and in motion by Ed McCord. Vote for Ed McCord! Sincerely, Jason & Nikki Angle

BNC’s Autumn Equinox Exhibit Features Work of Charley Harper You are invited to Brukner Nature Center to enjoy the iconic wildlife art of Charley Harper and his unique view of wildlife and wild places, not through realistic paintings, but by means of stylized drawings and paintings that capture the essence of his subjects using the fewest elements – minimal realism. Charley likes to joke that he doesn’t count the feathers of the birds he paints, just the wings. His different perspective on the world always includes a little humor and mystery and aims to help us want to preserve the natural treasures that remain. FrEE with paid admission. A portion of the sales of Harper Art will support BNC’s mission of wildlife conservation. The nature center is located at 5995 Horseshoe Bend Rd., Troy.

The Band of Bucc Pride has been on the road traveling to contests over the last several weeks. The band has been very successful and has earned its place at the State contest in November. After two weeks of intense practice, where they focused on their music as well as adding to their general effect, they traveled to Westerville North to perform. These students shined at this contest, nailing every musical note, marching technique, impact points, and general effect. At the end of the day, the band earned first place in Class C and qualified for State competition by earning an overall superior rating. On October 19, the band loaded up and traveled to Marion Local School. The band once again outscored many larger bands due to their hard work and diligence on and off the competition field. We have students who love what they do and a director who just pours her knowledge into each of them. This was very apparent as the students accepted the first place trophy in Class C and once again received an overall superior rating! The Covington Band of Bucc Pride traveled to Tecumseh on October 26 for their final performance prior to the OMEA State Competition on Sunday, Nov. 3, at Welcome Stadium. Due to such a successful year, the band is scheduled to give a community performance on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 7 p.m., on Smith Field. Come out for a chance to see your State Qualifying Band of Bucc Pride!
