It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the cancellation of this year’s Fall Farm Fest scheduled for October 10 and 11 at Lost Creek Reserve. We know this will be an enormous disappointment to the vendors, guests, and community. There are two overriding concerns that led to this decision. First, our primary concern is always the health and safety of the staff, volunteers, and guests. After working with Miami County Public Health, it was determined that the Fall Farm Fest would not be able to take place in the traditional format that guests have come to know and love. According to J. Scott Myers, executive director of the Miami County Park District, “With the large crowds that come to Fall Farm Fest and the many tight walkways, we cannot provide the opportunity for people to social distance and it is a priority for us to assist with keeping our community healthy.” Second, a considerable amount of time and resources go into planning this event and to continue planning with the possibility of it being canceled would not be prudent. Myers said, “The Park District prides itself on being good stewards of our taxpayer funds and feels that putting more resources into the event would be irresponsible.” The park district will be offering several fall outdoor experiences thru October 24. In addition, the corn maze will be open to the public for free during regular business hours (8 a.m. to sunset) when not in use for scheduled programs. To learn about and register for any of the Fall Experiences at Lost Creek Reserve, visit www.MiamiCountyParks.com.
ATTENTION West Milton Residents! The West Milton Rotary Halloween Family Fun Night has been canceled this year due to the pandemic. We’ll see you in 2021!

A Pictorial Look Back
1925 - There was an issue with the Baby Parade & Show. Mrs. George Patty remembers... “It caused some fussing, ‘cause everyone thinks their baby is the “prettiest.” So... it was changed to the “healthiest” baby. 1926 - Prizes were awarded to the “Most Perfect Baby,” with each child carefully examined by competent nurses and doctors. 1927 - Entertainment was provided at the Strand Theater during Pumpkin Show Week. Movies changed every day. Admission was 15 cents and 30 cents.
1935 - “The Stratosphere Man” soared into the sky 130 feet with a 500 foot “slide for his life.” 1937 - There was a $2.50 prize for the “Prettiest Decorated Velocipede.” 1938 - Coal was a big necessity that year, so the Bradford Coal Company ran a contest. “Guess how many grains of corn in the can and win a ton of coal for Christmas!” 1942, 1943, 1944, and 1945 - No Pumpkin Shows were held because of WWII. 1948 - A loud speaker was a new feature that year, and parents with lost children could contact the secretary for help in locating them. 1953 - Rides were featured Saturday afternoon at a cost of 10 cents. 1958 - A Hula Hoop Contest offered a $1 prize for “Endurance” and $1 for “Maneuvers.”

Letter to the editor Essay Contest Announced by VFW Post 6557 ~the viLLage bLessing box ~ Attention Junior High & High School Students!
I am a Cadette in Troop 32174 in the Piqua-Covington Service Unit. This project began because I wanted to do a service project for the community and work towards earning The Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest award a Cadette can earn and the second highest award overall for a Girl Scout. In order to earn The Silver Award a Girl Scout Cadette needs to identify an issue in her community and work towards creating a self-sustaining service project to help the issue. I had a lot of ideas and wanted to help a lot of causes. In the midst of planning, the pandemic happened and it became clear to me that people needed access to food and needed to be able to do it in a way that they wouldn’t feel embarrassed and could easily get what they needed quickly. I chose the idea of a blessing box because it would be the best way to provide for this. People can get what they need and if others have a little extra that they don’t need they can share it with those who do. I also really loved the idea because it gives people an opportunity to help others. Sometimes people want to help but they don’t know where to start. A very kind lady found out what I was doing and sent me a donation in the mail ADELYNN RICH and “The Village to purchase food to get The Box started. I wanted to make Blessing Box” located at the Covington Government Center sure I was able to get as much as I could so I learned how to compare prices and learned about meal planning. The Box is great because it’s always open and people can use it whenever they need it. I had a lot of fun working on The Box and learned some new skills working with power tools, painting, working with concrete (it’s in the bottom of the flower pot) and I also loved planting the flowers. I enjoyed working with my family who helped me learn these new skills. I’m excited to say The Box is already being used by those in need and generous people have dropped off donations. That’s important, because in order for The Box to work we need kind people to share their extras. I hope people get as excited as I am about it and hope people want to see it succeed like I do. Doing good things is contagious. I want to keep going with this project and build on it. My next step is to find a way for people to leave extra vegetables from their garden for others to enjoy. Thank you for allowing me to complete my service project. Thank you for believing in my idea. Sincerely, Adelynn Rich HOW TO GIVE: People who wish to donate canned or packaged food items may place them into The Blessing Box located at the Covington Village Government Center. If you are in need any of these items, please help yourself.
Pleasant Hill Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6557 invites you to participate in the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen Youth Essay Contest and Voice of Democracy Contest. The contest provides students the opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic and patriotic themed essay. Both contests are open to students enrolled in public, private, or parochial high school or home study programs in the U.S., its territories and possessions, or in an overseas U.S. military/civilian dependent school. The VFW’s Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen essay competitions are dedicated to promoting patriotism among our nation’s youth. Students are asked to submit an essay in response to a question or statement on a subject which prompts them to consider how democratic ideals and principles apply to their lives. Competition begins at the local Post level. Post winners advance to District and then to State. Prizes are awarded for the winners at each level. State winners compete nationally for U.S. Savings Bonds and more than $2.5 million in scholarships and incentives. The Voice of Democracy Contest is for students in grades 9-12. This year’s theme is “Is This the Country the Founders Envisioned?” Students are required to write and record an original 3-5 minute (+ or – 5 seconds max) essay on a CD. Entries will be judged on originality, content, and delivery. For rules and entry form go to https://www.vfw.org/VOD/. The Patriot’s Pen contest is open to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. This year’s theme is “What is Patriotism to Me?” This contest is a written essay of 300-400 words in which students will be judged on knowledge of the theme, theme development, and clarity of ideas. For rules/entry form go to https://www.vfw.org/VOD/ (and scroll down). The essay and completed entry form must be submitted by October 31 to Pleasant Hill VFW Post #6557 by mail at P.O. Box 133, Pleasant Hill, OH 45359, or in person. Contact Scholarship Committee Chairman Kris Byrd at 937-216-1223 or kabphill@gmail.com with questions regarding these contests. Cash prizes for both contests will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place entries.
