The Community Chest thanks those who have given in the past and look forward to serving the Union Township community for years to come.
In the October 23 issue there was an article regarding a “Meet and Greet” for local candidates running for office in the November 5 general election. Also mentioned was the tax levy for additional funds for the Milton-Union Public Library. This was in error, as the levy is a RENEWAL, and will NOT incur new taxes. We regret this inadvertent error, and apologize for any confusion it may cause as you vote Tuesday, Nov. 5.

BPA In Your Community! Business Professionals of America (BPA) is a student organization for students to become more engaged with business and other real-world useful skills. It gives you great experiences that can help students prepare for college and careers. Students get to travel and compete at three different levels – Regional, State, and National – which will take place in Washington, D.C., this year. In competitions there are over 200 events for students to choose from and compete in. This year Covington High School is starting a chapter and they are hoping to become engaged in the community. BPA does multiple activities, such as fundraising events and community events. BPA is a great opportunity for students to be able to travel, compete, meet new people, make connections, and acquire knowledge that will help you with college, career, and beyond. As a BPA member I am very excited to participate in this brand new chapter. Coming into my first year of high school I was very excited to take a couple business classes this year, and when I heard about this opportunity to take what I am learning to competitions, I was extremely excited. I was elected treasurer, and can’t wait to watch the chapter grow and engage with the community this year. Lauren King

Bradford Library Says Thank You To Sponsors of Summer Reading Program Bradford Public Library would like to say Thank You to the many local businesses who sponsored our 2019 Summer Reading Program, “A Universe of Stories!” Your financial support allowed the library to offer weekly movies, bring in amazing entertainers, hold enriching workshops and even take a group of students to COSI in Columbus. The highlight of our Summer Program is the End of Summer Olympics held in the Y-Yard Park. Students who have met reading requirements have an afternoon of silly games and fun. We hold our Big Prize Drawing after the Olympics. This year over 50 students went home with a great prize, thanks to the generous support of our sponsors. Adult readers also enjoyed a cookout prior to their prize giveaway. This year 37 adults read throughout the summer and each went home with a prize as well. The following businesses have partnered with us to promote reading this year: Stocker-Fraley Funeral Home, New Tech Plastics, CF Poeppelman, Production Paint, Dick Lavy Trucking, Greenville National Bank, Bradford Community Club, Covington Savings and Loan, Littman-Thomas Insurance, Marshall’s Shell Station and Subway Restaurant in Covington. We would also like to thank the Village of Bradford for use of the park for our Olympic event, Bradford Community Club for volunteering at the Olympics and Bradford Schools for transportation. We appreciate your support in encouraging the students to participate and we look forward to next Summer…until then we hope to see you at Bradford Public Library!

UVMC Patient Flow Project Announced – Includes Expansion of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation – Upper Valley Medical Center (UVMC) recently broke ground on an addition on the south side of the hospital to provide for expansion of the cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program. The 7,600 sq. ft. addition will more than double the size of the existing cardiopulmonary rehab department and will provide a separate entrance for participants in the program. It also will include an employee wellness area for exercise and wellness activities for hospital staff. “The cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program at UVMC has grown significantly over the years. This expansion will help us address the growing need for these services and make this much needed, specialized care for our patients even more readily available, close to home,” said Tom Parker, UVMC president. “The enhanced accessibility and convenience for patients that this expansion will provide will help make this great program even greater,” said cardiologist Aaron Kaibas, D.O. “I am proud to provide this level of care at UVMC, and I look forward to improving the lives of even more cardiac patients in Miami County and the surrounding communities.” “As with cardiac patients, rehabilitation and disease management is imperative for patients with chronic pulmonary disease,” said Jennifer Clune, M.D., pulmonologist and critical care physician. “The UVMC cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program makes patients’ heart and lungs stronger and healthier, restoring physical function. It can, at times, be even more beneficial than medication.” “UVMC and Premier Health are guided by their mission to improve the health of the communities they serve, and this expansion is an important step toward meeting the growing needs of patients in our area” said Steve Staley, chair of the UVMC Board of Directors. Parker said along with the cardiopulmonary rehab expansion, UVMC will make additional enhancements to the hospital over the next year. “In what we’re calling our patient flow project, we’ll reconfigure and update the main lobby and registration areas to provide improved comfort, convenience, ease of access, safety, and confidentiality for our patients and visitors,” he said. The cardiopulmonary rehab addition and patient flow project are projected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2020.

Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County Hosted fall river Walk Memorial At Stillwater Prairie reserve Despite the rain, more than 225 family members and friends gathered at the Stillwater Prairie Reserve in Covington on September 29, walking in memory of their loved ones at the Fall River Walk Memorial. Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County hosted the annual event, which was an opportunity for families and friends to come together to remember their loved ones. They walked about a mile along a limestone gravel path to the Stillwater River. As they arrived at the bank of the river, an eagle flew across it. John DeBoer played Native American flute music throughout the event. At the bank of the river, Rev. Ed Ellis, chaplain at Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County, offered healing words. “We are here to remember and honor some very precious people. Perhaps you can recall a calm walk, hand in hand, or side by side, which you made with your loved one in such a place as this.” He encouraged the walkers to remember their loved ones. “Be with the thoughts and feelings of your quieted soul as you pause here today. Sorrow, grief, and mourning, these are the various ways we describe the worthy act of remembrance. Don’t be surprised if you might have moments of sadness and thankfulness that intersect and overlap. Along the way, you are wisely taking time to remember well.” As he read the names of their loved ones, family members placed a flower in the Stillwater River. For some it was an emotional experience. For others, it was a healing moment in their grief process. Kimberly Walker, a bereavement counseling professional, said the not-for-profit hospice organization was pleased that so many people chose to honor their loved ones. “If you have lost someone close to you, this walk is an opportunity to remember and honor them along with your family members. The rain reminded us of tears. But it also represented cleansing and healing.” Walker praised the rangers from the Miami County Park District. They helped with parking and assisted people walking along the path. Before the event, they made sure the river was cleared of any debris and logs. “They were phenomenal as they ensured the safety of all of the walkers. “

Disposal of Unused Medications Tops 1,500 Pounds at Greater Dayton Premier Health Hospitals More than 1,500 pounds of unused medications have been securely disposed of in receptacles at Premier Health hospitals since the units were installed last year. As part of its ongoing effort to combat opioid addiction, Premier Health received support for the receptacles from PNC to assist the community in safely disposing of unused medications at several sites across the Miami Valley. The receptacles are open to the public at all times. They are not part of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day Saturday, Oct. 26. More than 70 percent of people using opioids for nonmedical reasons get them from family and friends, according to the American Medical Association. The diversion of these medications for inappropriate purposes underscores the importance of their safe handling and disposal. Premier Health distributed the funds to the area hospital foundations for use for this program. The receptacles are available locally at Miami Valley Hospital North (inside the lobby beside retail pharmacy) and at Upper Valley Medical Center (at the foot of the main staircase in the hospital lobby). Those disposing of unused medications are encouraged to place them in plastic baggies instead of bottles. It is not appropriate to use the receptacles to dispose of needles, syringes, aerosolized cans, inhalers, thermometers, lotions or liquids. Unused medications will be incinerated and will not be taken to a landfill. For more information on local efforts to combat opioid addiction, go to opioidassist.com
Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County Memorial Butterfly Release Helps Families Remember and Honor Loved Ones Pathways of Hope at the Generations of Life Center, a service of Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County, held its Memorial Butterfly Release on June 23 at the Troy-Hayner Cultural Center. The butterfly release serves as a way for families to remember and honor those who have touched their lives and who live on in their memories. “Grief is analogous to the story of the butterfly because grief is also a transformation. It requires hard work and patience, and it takes time,” said Kimberly Walker, bereavement counselor with Pathways of Hope. “We must trust the process as grief can promote growth, wisdom, resilience, and empathy for others.” During the service, Walker shared the story of the transforming butterfly in relation to grief as a process. At the conclusion of the service, there was a time of reflection as participants released live butterflies in memory and honor of loved ones as music played. “This memorial service is a beautiful way to remember and honor family members and friends who have touched our lives,” said Heather Bolton, executive director of Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County. “We are grateful for the participants this year for attendance and sponsoring butterflies.” Pathways of Hope at Generations of Life Center provides grief education and support to people of all ages in Miami County and the surrounding areas. The services are provided at no cost to members of the community regardless of a prior connection to Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County.
