On Saturday, Dec. 8, you are welcome to come to the Pleasant Hill Laundromat to do your laundry for free between the hours of 12 noon and 2 p.m. Bring on those dirty clothes! So that all who come can get their laundry done for free, there will be a limit of two loads at a time for each family. Volunteers will hand you quarters and provide free laundry detergent and dryer sheets. There are no strings attached – just come and be blessed! Winter Bird Count Announced By Nature Center Join Brukner Nature Center staff and Bird Club members for a morning hike on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 9 a.m. until noon, as they conduct their annual survey of birds found at BNC. This data provides valuable information on population trends, enabling them to better manage this beautiful nature preserve. Over the past several years over 30 species have been spotted, including hermit thrushes, fox sparrows, and brown creepers. Meet at 9 a.m. in the Interpretive Building, where participants will divide into groups and head out onto the trails. They’ll meet back at the center for a hot lunch and to tally their results. Newton Boys’ SAY Striker’s Soccer Team Wins 2018 Ohio SAY State Tournament On Sunday, Nov. 18, the Newton boys’ SAY striker’s soccer team won the Ohio SAY State Tournament held in Hamilton. This is the first Newton team to accomplish this. To bring home the title, a team must win all five games in a row against a 25-team single elimination bracket, over two weekends. Overall, this team, composed of 10- to 12-year-old boys, completed a perfect season with a 17-0 record, scoring 100 goals and allowing only four. Think Before You Act The following article is provided not to poke fun at SAFETY, but to point out the importance of thinking before acting and to emphasize that all accidents are avoidable. A bricklayer was asked for additional information regarding work-related injuries. In response to your request for additional information in block number three of the accident reporting form, I put “Poor Planning” as the cause of my accident. You said in your letter that I should explain more fully and I trust that the following details will be sufficient. I’m a bricklayer by trade. On the day of the accident I was working alone on the roof of a now six-story building. When I completed my work, I discovered that I had about 500 pounds of brick left over. Rather than carry the bricks down by hand, I decided to lower in a barrel by using a pulley, which fortunately was attached to the side of the building at the sixth floor. Securing the rope at ground level, I went up on the roof, swung the barrel out and loaded the bricks into it. Then I went back to the ground and untied the rope, holding it tightly to insure a slow decent of the 500 pounds. Due to my surprise at being jerked off the ground so suddenly, I lost my presence of mind and forgot to let go of the rope. Needless to say, I proceeded at a rather rapid rate up the side of the building. In the vicinity of the third floor, I met the barrel coming down. This explains the fractured skull and broken collarbone. Slowed only slightly, I continued a rapid ascent, not stopping until the fingers of my right were two knuckles deep into the pulley. Fortunately, by that time I had regained my presence of mind and was able to hold tightly to the rope in spite of my pain. At approximately the same time however, the barrel of bricks hit the ground and the bottom fell out of the barrel. Devoid of the weight of the bricks, the barrel now weighed approximately 50 pounds. I refer you again to block eleven. As you might imagine, I began a rapid descent down the side of the building. I the vicinity of the third floor, I met the barrel coming up. This accounts for the two fractured ankles and the lacerations of my legs and lower body. The encounter with the barrel slowed me enough to lesson the injuries when I fell onto the pile of bricks and fortunately, only two vertebrae were cracked. I am sorry to report however, that as I lay there on the bricks in pain, unable to stand, and watching the empty barrel six stories above; I again lost my presence of mind. I let go of the rope . . .
