$ ! !
The Covington Noon Optimist and Covington Kiwanis Clubs are pleased to announce their annual Covington Community Pancake Day, to be held Saturday, March 14, 7 a.m to 1 p.m., at the Covington K-8 School cafeteria. Tickets are available at the door and are $7 each for adults. Children under 10 may eat for only $4. A ticket is good for your fill of delicious pancakes, coffee, and one serving of sausage, applesauce, juice, or milk. This is the 55th annual Pancake Day event in Covington, which was originally started by the Kiwanis Club in 1965. Over the last halfcentury, Covington’s Pancake Day has become a joint venture with the Noon Optimist Club. This year marks the fourth that this event will be held at the Covington K-8 School cafeteria and commons area at 807 Chestnut St. Enter the K-8 school main entrance to the east of the high school. Serving hours will be from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. All proceeds from Pancake Day stay in the Covington community to benefit the youth of the village. This year, the portion of profits earned by the Optimist Club will go directly to the new Maple Street Park facilities being planned by the Village of Covington at the former high school/middle school lot. Each year, the profits of Pancake Day are split between the two ser-

vice clubs. The Covington Kiwanis Club sponsors the CHS Key Club and other projects in town, such as children’s programming at the J.R. Clarke Public Library. The Covington Noon Optimist Club, begun in 1985 and meeting every Wednesday at noon at the Covington Eagles Aerie #3998, is marking its 35th year as a “Friend of Youth” to Covington kids. In addition to generous contributions to the CHS Scholarship Fund Program, the Noon Optimists sponsor numerous other youth events. This includes recurring support of the annual Oratorical Contest, Halloween Costume Contest, High School Honors Banquet, the P.L.U.S. organization, the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Conference for CHS students, Covington music programs, and numerous other donations to worthy Covington youth-oriented causes. Pancake Day would not be possible without the continued generous support of numerous Covington area businesses whose sponsorship will be visible on the placemats. Thank you to the Covington Eagles Aerie #3998 for their generosity as the major sponsor again this year. In addition to each business who is a placemat sponsor, the printing of the placemats is sponsored by The Covington Savings & Loan Association, sausage is sponsored by Sprankle’s Butcher Shop, and the pancake batter sponsors are Littman-Thomas Insurance Agency and Moore Funeral Home. The Kiwanis and Optimist Clubs invite all Covington and surrounding area residents to join them for golden brown pancakes to continue the strong support of our youth in the Covington community.
Keep the numbers of these locally owned businesses on hand for all of your service and shopping needs.

Graduating high school students in the Miami County area will continue to benefit from a local art scholarship. The Karen Ingle Memorial Art Scholarship Fund was created in memory of Karen Ingle, who passed away in November of 2001. The art scholarship was founded by the late Bob Penny of Penny, Ohlmann, Neiman Advertising Agency, and his wife, Jean, in honor and tribute to Karen. She had been employed with the advertising agency for over 28 years and had remained close friends and colleagues to the Pennys. Karen’s parents, Scott and Miriam Ingle, were substantial contributors to the initial founding of the art scholarship. They did so to keep Karen’s memory of her contributions to both the commercial and liberal arts world alive and to flourish in this ever changing world of arts and culture. Karen Ingle had an enthusiastic and warm spirit, incredible artistic talent, and ability to inspire others by setting an example that many have sought to follow. Karen’s artistic contributions included her hometown of Covington, where she designed a new Buccaneer emblem for her alma mater, and the City of Oakwood, where she designed seasonal banners which hung all over Oakwood for many years. The Karen Ingle Memorial Art Scholarship was founded in tribute to Karen and to ensure that Karen’s memory will continue to inspire others in the art community. Seniors who are graduating in 2020 from a high school in Miami County are eligible to apply for the scholarship. The individual must be planning to attend a two- or fouryear accredited university, art school, or college, and pursue an undergraduate degree in Commercial Art, Fine Art, Art History, or Art Education. A $1,500 scholarship will be offered this spring to individuals who meet the established criteria. Schools in the Miami County District include Bethel, Bradford, Covington, Miami East, MiltonUnion, Newton, Piqua, Tippecanoe, Troy, and Upper Valley Career Center. Students should contact their guidance office for an application and criteria of the scholarship program. Deadline for applications to be turned in is March 20. Applications should be mailed to The Troy Foundation, 216 W. Franklin St., Troy, OH 45373, Attn: Karen Ingle Art Scholarship. If you have any questions regarding the art scholarship or donations to it, please call Lisa Reynolds at The Troy Foundation at 937-339-8935. The Karen Ingle Memorial Art Scholarship provides a helping hand to the youth of today for the opportunity to aspire to the heights where Karen soared.

NEwtoN JFD LEvy coNcErNs – cost & sustaiNabiLity • 2.8 mil operating levy = +$260,000/year • 1.75 mil facility levy = +$162,500/year We currently pay 2.2 mil @ $167,000/year • New cost would equal $589,000/year total Also, the $2.9 million firehouse will cost taxpayers $4.55 million in the end (162,500*28). New taxes with current will total 3.5 times our current cost. From what I can tell from googling and interrogating the auditor’s website, there are 3,450 folks that live in Newton Township. Only about 1,500 own property that will pay for this. Over 80% of the JFD tax revenue comes from the 2/3 of the population who live in the unincorporated areas of Newton Township, outside of Pleasant Hill village limits. Many farmers will see around or over an $800 increase annually with these levies. Don't believe me? It's public information on the auditor’s website. Go to the map, randomly pick a few farms of people you may or may not know, go to the valuations tab, and run the calculation. Remember, one farm may have multiple parcels. Total Value (assessed 35%) × .00455 for new tax increase. I'm also concerned with the financial timeline of the department. $11 and $13/hour doesn't sound like it's going to retain folks very long. Depending on elections, minimum wage could someday go to $15/hr. Today, a new fire engine would completely cripple their savings. They still need gear replacement and a new medic is needed and outfitted. It looks like almost a few hundred thousand deficit. I'm expecting an emergency levy at some point after passing this levy, and I believe there will be tremendous leverage on the voters to "Vote yes, or our new unpaid for $4.55 million dollar (taxpayer cost) fire house will sit empty." We all have stories or first-hand experiences of the JFD doing great at what they do. I hope no one takes this as an attack on the members of the JFD. However, these levies are not a reward for a job well done. With the rapidly increasing costs of the business, I don't think these levies save and preserve Newton JFD provided EMS coverage; it’s a gateway for future emergency levies that will continue driving up taxes, and delay its eventual failure at a higher cost. My proof is every small town that is just like ours that has already terminated EMS coverage due to increasing costs, and relies on aid from neighboring districts. I'd really like to hear cries to talk about forming a Miami County EMS to help level costs, county-wide. As stated in some of these meetings, it’s not just us facing EMS funding issues. Casstown, Fletcher, Ludlow Falls, and other small towns could all benefit from a countyrun EMS at a lower county-shared cost. Many folks have already decided how to vote. Some base it on personal security, some on facts, and others on emotion. Some may still be unsure. I only ask to consider how this financially impacts all members of the community and our township’s future needs. Do we really think we can keep it going another 30 years with the history of all the small communities like ours failing? With our full tax rate at 63.01 mil for our district, moving to 67.56 with the passage of both levies, future school and other district levies are going to be increasingly difficult to pass. Get out and vote for what you believe in, but understand the whole picture, not just the emotional side. It's a very difficult issue. Charlie Adams, Pleasant Hill

Newberry Twp. Cemetery Clean-Up Announced
I would like to ask the voters of Miami County to join me in voting to re-elect Miami County Sheriff Dave Duchak and Miami County Commissioner Greg Simmons. Both are very qualified and dedicated elected officials. Sheriff Duchak has over 30 years of law enforcement experience, with the last four years as Miami County Sheriff. He has, along with commissioner Greg Simmons and other commissioners, implemented a courthouse/safety building security system to provide safety to all citizens and employees of Miami County. Commissioner Greg Simmons has over 30 years experience in county government, the last four years as Miami County Commissioner. Miami County elected officials have a reputation throughout Ohio as being progressive, dedicated, and conservative, providing the best services to the citizens of Miami County. My 44 years as Miami County Clerk of Courts, working daily with the Sheriff and Commissioners, gives me a first-hand look at who is best qualified for Sheriff and Commissioner, and that would be Sheriff Dave Duchak and Commissioner Greg Simmons. I am asking each of you to join me in voting to re-elect Sheriff Dave Duchak and Commissioner Greg Simmons on Tuesday, March 17. Respectfully, Jan A. Mottinger Miami County Clerk of Courts
