tours ~ speakers refreshments “neW” services J.R. Clarke Public Library’s Centennial Celebration is Saturday! J.R. Clarke Public Library is pleased to announce its much anticipated Centennial Celebration will take place Saturday, April 13, beginning at 1 p.m., in the lower level Community Room. Several speakers will be on hand, covering historical background and what may be in store in the future for the library. JRC will also be honoring the memory of Molly Murphy through a very special book collection, purchased from the Molly Murphy Unicorn Foundation Grant. Covington resident author Don Angle’s book Finding Light in the Shadows – 30 Photo Essays will also become a part of Molly’s collection. As with most observances, the JRC Board of Trustees will serve refreshments on the main floor. Visitors and participants can progress throughout the library with a self-guided tour. Three main library locations are essential to this tour: 1) The J.R. Clarke Library Alcove on the top floor, which holds historical, reference, obituary, and genealogy information along with our new digital genealogy wizard, the SCANPro 3000. 2) The Circulation Desk on the main floor, where a display of “new” services to be offered go into effect the day of the celebration for our patrons, schools, community organizations, and businesses. 3) The Lower Level Community Room, which holds the digital SMARTBoard and video projector. A staff librarian or library volunteer will be giving demonstrations and/or answering questions at each of these library locations. If you have questions or would like to speak during the festivities, please call Cherie at 937-473-2226. This event celebrating over 100 years of service to the Covington area community, will be one-of-akind, so please come and celebrate the uniqueness and value of your library – J.R. Clarke!

“Us MilitarY HistorY in a Box”

“5 Events” You Won’t Want to Miss! ‘U.S. Military History in a Box’ Offered Select Tuesdays at J.R. Clarke Library On several Tuesdays in April and May, the Covington Optimist’s Club will be sponsoring military history presentations by the Miami Valley Veteran’s Museum in Troy. The location will be J.R. Clarke Public Library, Covington, in the lower level Community Room, at 6:30 p.m. The programs are entitled “U.S. Military History in a Box.” This project features five specially constructed boxes, each of which focuses on different historical time periods when local Veterans served their country – from the Revolutionary War to Vietnam. The following Tuesdays in April and May will be programming dates. The last presentation, on World War I, will precede the Covington Memorial Day Parade and the exceptional World War I Memorial Dedication at Highland Cemetery in Covington on the morning of Monday, May 27.

Tuesday, April 16 – The Revolutionary War and War of 1812 Tuesday, April 23 – The Civil War Tuesday, April 30 – World War II Tuesday, May 14 – The Vietnam War Tuesday, May 21 – World War I These presentations encourage hands-on experiences with real artifacts of the time. Parents, grandparents, and students are encouraged to come and share conversations about their knowledge of our Armed Forces. The “U.S. Military History in a Box” presentations are appropriate for upper primary students through adults – especially history buffs, U.S. and World History courses, and anyone with a zeal to learn more about the U.S. Military during war times. Each presentation will last around 45 minutes. This includes the program and the following question and answer session. The library wishes to thank both the Covington Optimist’s Club, for their generous donation in sponsoring this special series for the Miami and Darke county areas, and the Miami Valley Veteran’s Museum in Troy for their diligent work in recreating the efforts and expertise of our U.S. Military in times of war. Terry Purke is the Miami Valley Veteran’s Museum Curator. Optimist Clubs are dedicated to “Bringing Out the Best in Kids” and do their part through community service programs. Since each club is autonomous and run by members in their community, Optimists have the unique flexibility to serve the youth of their area in any way they see fit. Please address any questions to 937-473-2226, any Covington Optimist member, and Mr. Purke and staff of the Miami Valley Veteran’s Museum. Refreshments will be served each Tuesday evening.
