J. Andrew Fulker Scholarships Available The Scholarship Committee of the Miami County Bar Assn. is receiving applications for scholarship grants from the J. Andrew Fulker Memorial Scholarship Fund. The fund was established, in cooperation with the Troy Foundation, as a lasting tribute to Troy attorney J. Andrew Fulker, who died in an auto accident in 1989. Grants will be used for law school tuition. To be eligible, an applicant must be admitted for full-time attendance at a college of law or law school in a program designed to lead to a Juris Doctor or similar law degree. The scholarship fund operates as an endowment fund, with grants awarded from the income earned on the principal of the fund. Gifts to the J. Andrew Fulker Memorial Scholarship Fund are eligible for deduction as a charitable contribution for federal income tax purposes. Contributions may be made payable to the Troy Foundation, designated for the J. Andrew Fulker Memorial Scholarship Fund, and mailed or delivered to Melissa A. Kleptz, Executive Director, Troy Foundation, 216 W. Franklin St., Troy, OH 45373. Applications for scholarships may be obtained from Jack L. Neuenschwander, Miami County Bar Assn. Happy
THOUGHTS Today, April 8, is my brother Ed’s 61st birthday. We can’t have a family get-together for him due to social distancing, so I decided to pick out one of my favorite songs, “Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles. I called and wished him Happy Birthday and told him to listen to a song I especially picked out for “my one and only brother.” After the song ended, Ed said, “That was So CooL!” Then, as I began my journey to work, I noticed my neighbors’s bay window beautifully decorated with a Happy Easter message in bright, cheery colors. What a great way to start my day! ~ Jacqui noll, covington When I walked back from my mailbox the other day, my eyes were drawn to three large pastel hearts someone had taped to my front window. They spelled out FAITH, HoPE, and LoVE. Turns out my little neighbor girl across the street, Jersey Robinson, had decided to do that good deed. Thanks, Hon, for a reminder that we need to keep the faith that God will see us through this, hope that it will end soon, and to love everyone with all our hearts, because every single person is being affected by this pandemic. And I LoVE the beautiful handmade Easter cross on your front door! ~ Jean Devlin, Pleasant Hill You can’t MaKe oLD FrienDs - It’s folly to think that having planted an acorn in the morning, you can expect to sit that afternoon in the cool shade of the oak. old friends and soulmates cannot be created in a day. And nothing, in truth, can substitute or replace that individual friend or companion of many years. Nothing can match the treasure of common memories, shared heartfelt emotions, and trials endured together. our histories are written in shared relationships, memories, and experiences, and can’t be changed or re-written. For years we reap from seeds we planted and feel ourselves rich, basking in the shade of a veritable plantation of friends and loved ones. But time is relentless and does its work. And our friends and loved ones slip away and deprive us of their shade. Love and cherish them while you can. And be grateful for their shade while you can enjoy it. ~ Jerry Kemp, covington

Patronize LocaL Businesses! Although, for the time being, you won’t be able to sit down and enjoy a meal at your favorite restaurant, most places welcome and NEED your take-out business. By patronizing them NOW, you’ll make it possible for them to re-open their doors once the COVID-19 crisis is over. Continue to have maintenance done on your vehicles, have your lawn care service keep your grass weed-free and thriving, have outdoor construction projects completed, and keep up your provisions by shopping at local places of business. By taking the precautions outlined by the government, you can safely shop. It is recommended that when replenishing your food supply, only one member of the family do the shopping. We all need to do our part in keeping our local businesses solvent and able to serve us again once this crisis has passed!
Calling all Crafters! – Help Sew Face Mask Covers – Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County is looking to mobilize an army of crafters who can sew face mask covers to help with the shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) healthcare workers are facing throughout Ohio and the nation as they treat patients with COVID-19. “Many crafters are reaching out and offering to make face mask covers,” said Amy LeVan, Director of Volunteer Services at Ohio’s Hospice. “While our healthcare professionals are using their PPE equipment thoughtfully, these homemade face mask covers may help us extend our supply of PPE if shortages continue to be a challenge.” Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County is accepting face mask covers from smoke-free and pet-free environments. These face mask covers will be used as a last resort based on current guidance. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, healthcare providers can use homemade face masks when face masks are not available. However, the CDC states that homemade face masks are not considered PPE, since their capability to protect healthcare providers is unknown. The homemade face masks should be used in combination with a face shield that covers the entire front, extending to the chin or below, and the sides of the face. The pattern is available online at:
https://www.hospiceofmiamicounty.org/help-sew-face-mask-covers/ If crafters have any questions, please contact Beth Shrake, volunteer coordinator at Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County, at 937-335-5191. Crafters may drop off their completed face mask covers in a bin at the main entrance of Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County, 550 Summit Ave., Suite 101, Troy.
Sharing happy thoughtS During troubLing timeS Turning on the TV news and reading newspaper headlines these days is “distressing and depressing.” We’re living in a time that none of us could have foreseen. Bad things have always happened, of course, but usually it was to “someone else” living “somewhere else.” But the fact is... THIS bad thing is happening to ALL of us, no matter where we live, no matter how hard we try to do the right thing. But, it’s not all bad. We are sure many of you have uplifting, encouraging stories you could share with our readers. Perhaps, if you’re a shut-in, you have a neighbor who checks on you daily to see if you have enough provisions to see you through this. If you’re considered an “essential” employee and must go to your job every day, maybe a thoughtful friend cares for your children while you’re working. Boredom is a problem with many families suddenly thrust together all day, every day. Have you thought of a creative way to entertain your children while they’re not in school? Maybe even a way to keep them engrossed while educating them at the same time? Adults, too, find excess time spent at home leads to depression and lethargy. Have you figured out a way to make your stay-at-home days more productive and less stressful? Too much togetherness can be a strain on even the happiest of families. Have you figured out how to spend so much time together without getting on each other’s nerves? Maybe the memories your children will have of this terrible time will be how much they enjoyed playing board games, the meals together at the dining room table, and making crafts the whole family can work on together. We invite our readers to share ways they’ve found to cope during this period of isolation. Please tell us – in 200 words or less – how you are making the best of a very bad time in your lives. Get your children involved... we’d love to hear their thoughts, too! You can e-mail your comments to arenspub@gmail.com; mail to: Arens Corp., Happy Thoughts, P.O. Box 69, Covington, Ohio 45318; or just put your submission in the drop box next to our parking lot!
