Each year on the f irst Thursday in May many honor the National Day of Prayer. In 2019 the National Day of Prayer will be on May 2nd. Who of us watching the news these days can’t see that we are a Nation that needs prayer? Would things be different in our Nation, our World, if we prayed more?

Did you know that the Stillwater River is a state designated scenic river? Ohio pioneered the river preservation movement in 1968 with the passage of the nation's first scenic rivers act. This legislation created a state program to protect Ohio's remaining high quality streams for future generations. Join Brukner Nature Center staff and volunteers on Friday, May 31, 1:30 - 4:30 p.m., and help keep the river free of trash. Volunteers will sweep the section of the Stillwater River that borders Brukner Nature Center – from Fenner Rd. to the West Milton Park. You must provide your own canoe, personal floatation device, and work gloves, but trash bags and an ice cream celebration will be provided! Adults only, please. Register by e-mailing deb@bruknernaturecenter.com. Deadline is Tuesday, May 28.

The Big Sit Planned May 4 at BNC Join some intrepid Brukner Nature Center staff, Bird Club members, and volunteers this Saturday, May 4, from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m., as they sit in a 17 ft. circle in the parking lot and tally every bird species seen or heard from that small island. This annual 12-hour fundraising event is held to share the excitement of birdwatching, to encourage an interest in this lifelong hobby, and to raise funds for the center’s Wildlife Ambassadors. Come learn the call of the Eastern Phoebe, try out a spotting scope, then make a pledge for each species recorded and support the nature center’s mission. Every penny counts, as around 50 species are recorded in this one 12-hour period. Pledge a $1 or pledge a penny – it all adds up to help feed the birds each year! Call 937-698-6493 and your pledge will be added to the list. BNC is located at 5995 Horseshoe Bend Rd., Troy.
Butterfly Walk Planned May 13 at Area Reserve The Miami County Park District will hold a Butterfly Walk Monday, May 13, 2 to 4 p.m., at Stillwater Prairie Reserve, 9750 St. Rt. 185 in Covington. Participants will join a park district naturalist out on the trail to learn about butterfly species and the different types of flowering plants. They will also help collect data for the Ohio Lepidoptera’s Butterfly Monitoring Program. Register by going to the program calendar at www.MiamiCountyParks.com or calling 937-335-6273, Ext. 109.
Owls & Howls Hike Scheduled Friday At Area Reserve The Miami County Park District will hold an Owls & Howls Hike Friday, May 3, 9-11 p.m., at Maple Ridge Reserve, 10430 St. Rt. 185, north of Covington. Join park district naturalist Amalee Houk as we try to call two species rarely seen by humans – an owl and coyote. Learn about these mysterious creatures while on a leisurely hike by the light of the moon. Register by going to the program calendar at MiamiCountyParks.com or by calling 937-335-6273, Ext. 109.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! From Fields of Grace Worship Center Fields of Grace Worship Center would like to thank everyone who attended the 9th annual Community Easter Egg Hunt held April 13 at the Covington Park. There were 1,550 in attendance! Due to the large crowds, each age will have their own hunting area next year. Thank you to the Village of Covington for the use of the Community Park, and Roger Finfrock for allowing us to park vehicles at Finfrock Construction. A special thank you also to the residents of Covington Care Center, Heartland of Piqua, Brookdale Assisted Living, Garbry Ridge Assisted Living, Piqua Manor, Caldwell House, Versailles Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center, Covington High School FFA, Covington Jr. High Student Council, RTI (Riverside Training Industries), and the people of Fields of Grace for stuffing a total of 29,480 eggs hunted this year. Many thanks to the people of Fields of Grace for the donations of 12 bikes and 52 baskets. Organizations and businesses who donated were Jason and Pam Sommers (Subway), Stocker-Fraley Funeral Home, Lindenmuth Farms, BECC Concrete Company, Covington Police Department, Covington Fire and Rescue, Covington Eagles, the Girl Scouts, Covington Savings & Loan, All For You Salon, Mullen’s Firestone, Apple Farm Service, and Indian’s Pizza. Thank you also to the Scott Family McDonalds for the donation of five free Happy Meals per week for a year prize. And to the 100-plus volunteers who came out early Saturday morning to prepare for the day’s events, and Indian’s Pizza for supplying their lunch, we thank you!

AWE Computer a Big Hit in MUPL’s Children’s Dept. Siblings Owen and Stella Knostman had a great time interacting with the AWE computer in the children’s department at the Milton-Union Public Library on Tuesday, Sept. 25. This early literacy and learning computer system is just one of the engaging items in the library that can be used to spark a love for reading. Weekly programs like Tiny Tots, Story Hour, and Buddy Reading are offered to enrich the lives of children and their caregivers. Call the library at 937-698-5515 or visit www.mupubliclibrary.org for the Calendar of events
On behalf of the Miami Valley Veterans Museum, we invite you to attend a World War I Centennial Commemoration and Remembrance Program at Covington High School, 807 Chestnut St., on Thursday, May 9. The program, held in conjunction with the Covington Exempted Village Schools, will begin at 1:30 p.m. and last about an hour. It will be followed by a reception/meet-and-greet function. Light refreshments will be served. This program is being held in memory and celebration of the servicemen from the Covington area, including students and graduates of Covington High School and those from neighboring communities who honorably served our country and did their part to safeguard the blessings of freedom a century ago, during the participation of the U.S. in World War I (1917-1919). This patriotic memorial program will, among other things, include presentations by student representatives of the CHS Classes of 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022, the Covington High School Band, and a video presentation from the United States World War I Centennial Commission, and will be the result of a great deal of work by both students and faculty members. We think that you will enjoy it and very much hope that you will be able to attend. There will be special guest seating, and student ushers will provide you with a program and usher you to the guest seating area upon your arrival. Please plan to arrive by 1:15 p.m. Please e-mail Jay Wackler at jaywackler@gmail.com at your earliest convenience to advise whether you can attend and if you are bringing anyone with you, so that we know how many guests to expect for refreshment planning purposes.
