– Donors to Receive Hero Face Mask – Community Blood Center needs heroes to help rebuild the blood supply by supporting the Covington Eagles Community Blood Drive on Monday, June 15, 1 to 7 p.m., at 715 E. Broadway St., Covington. Everyone who registers to donate will receive a “Hero – Giver, Lifesaver, Donor” face mask in addition to a free “Wake Up & Give” T-shirt. Donors must have an appointment and must wear a face mask at CBC blood drives. Make an appointment at www.DonorTime.com or call 937-461-3220. Blood collection fell to historic lows during the height of the pandemic. Only the dedication of donors and a substantial drop in hospital usage prevented a blood supply crisis. Hospital blood usage is returning to normal and the rising demand for blood donations comes with the traditional challenges of vacation travel, no high school blood drives, and an increase in accidents and trauma cases. CBC has launched the “Wake Up & Donate Blood Drive” to anticipate the summer demand for blood donations. Everyone who registers to donate thru October 31 is automatically entered in the grand prize drawing for a Custom-Comfort Sleep Number bed. Learn more at www.GivingBlood.org.

Why Do We CelebRAte FlAg DAy? The American flag is a symbol of the country’s history, pride and success in overcoming political oppression. Through its many incarnations and variations, the Stars and Stripes has waved over government buildings, schools and private residences. According to History.com, in 1775, the Second Continental Army led to the creation of the first “American” flag. However, since that flag was too similar to the British Union Jack flag, George Washington requested a revision. In 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution stating that the “flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white.” Furthermore, the “union” was represented by 13 stars of white in a blue field, “representing a new constellation.” More than a century later, a small-town Wisconsin teacher named Bernard Cigrand came up with the idea for an annual flag day in 1885. Even though the Fourth of July, a holiday in which the flag is prominently and proudly displayed, had long been celebrated as the birthday of the United States, Cigrand wanted a holiday that would focus specifically on the flag in all its glory. June 14 was selected because it marked the anniversary of the official adoption of the first flag. Cigrand led his school in the first formal observance of the holiday, and throughout his life continued to advocate for respect of the flag. Various other organizations liked the idea of a day to honor the flag, including the State Board of Education of New York, the Betsy Ross House and the New York Society of the Sons of the Revolution. Yet, it wasn’t until May 30, 1916, that Flag Day was officially established by presidential proclamation by President Woodrow Wilson. Still, it would take another 33 years for President Truman to sign an Act of Congress designating June 14 as the official National Flag Day, which he did on August 3, 1949. Americans can honor the flag by displaying it on Flag Day. Here’s how to display the flag properly, courtesy of Military.com.
American Flag Etiquette
• The flag should be free of any obstructions, such as power lines or tree limbs. • If displayed with other flags, Old Glory should be at the top-most point or in the center of a horizontal array of flags. • If the flag is displayed on its side, the blue field should be to the left. • The flag should be raised in the morning at a residence or business and taken down at night. The only ex ception to the flag being out at night is if it’s illuminated.
The American flag symbolizes many things to many people. While the American flag is proudly displayed in millions of buildings and homes across the United States year-round, it tends to draw special attention each summer, when Americans celebrate Memorial Day, Flag Day, and the Fourth of July.
• Flags can be repaired. However, if a flag is tattered, it can be removed and brought to a local VFW hall to be properly disposed of.
The Flag Code formalizes and unifies the standards of respect that must be given to the flag, even containing specific instructions regarding how the flag should not be used. The following are some of the rules that govern how to display the American flag.
What’s happening at...
Raising and loweRing the flag According to USFlag.org, the American flag should be raised quickly and lowered slowly and ceremoniously. While the Flag Code suggests the flag should be displayed only between sunrise and sunset, if it is displayed at night, it should be illuminated. The flag should be saluted as it is hoisted, and when lowered that salute should be held until the flag is unsnapped from the halyard or through the final note of music, whichever is the longest. When displayed indoors, the flag should be displayed to the right of the speaker, staging area or sanctuary. Any additional flags hanging in the room should always hang to the left of the American flag. When flags are grouped for display, the American flag should be in the center and at the highest point of any flag.
in mouRning The American flag is often displayed in mourning. When placing the flag at half staff, first hoist it to the peak for an instant before lowering it to a position halfway between the top and bottom of the staff. During mourning, when the time comes to lower the flag, it should once again be momentarily raised to the peak before it is lowered. The American flag is flown at half staff when mourning designated, principal government leaders. It also must be flown at half staff upon presidential or gubernatorial order. When covering a casket, the American flag should be placed with the union at the head and over the left shoulder. The flag should never be lowered into the grave.
PaRading the flag When the American flag is carried in a procession, such as in a parade, the flag should always be to the right of the marchers when it is the lone flag being represented. When other flags are carried, the American flag may be centered in front of the others or carried to their right. Parade audiences should salute the flag as it passes in the procession.
flag RestRictions There are many conditions under which the American flag is not to be used. These include: • The flag should never be used as a decoration. Use bunting to decorate with the colors of the American flag, always ensuring the blue stripe of the bunting is on top. • The flag should not be used as part of advertising. The flag also should not be embroidered, printed or impressed on articles such as cushions, napkins, boxes, or anything considered temporary that is likely to be discarded after use. • The flag should not be used as part of a costume. The uniforms of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations are permitted to wear American flag insignias on their uniforms. • The flag is not to be used as a receptacle to carry, deliver, hold, or receive anything. The American flag is an enduring symbol of freedom and sacrifice to millions of people across the globe. The flag should always be displayed with the utmost respect and in adherence to the guidelines set forth by the Flag Code.
Flag Day honors the Stars and Stripes, a symbol of our great American nation.

Miami County Hospice Celebrates Volunteer Week During National Volunteer Week, April 19-25, Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County recognized its volunteers for their support. In 2019, 169 volunteers provided more 8,000 hours of service and made more than 2,800 patient visits. These volunteers support the not-for-profit hospice through patient care, office and event support, bereavement support, housekeeping, animal-assisted therapy, and the American Pride® Veteran Care by Ohio’s Hospice, including the We Honor Veterans program. “Our volunteers make such a difference in what quality endof-life care looks like,” said Beth Shrake, volunteer coordinator at Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County. “They are compassionate, caring, and kind. All of them are willing to jump in and help where needed.” Each year, Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County recognizes its volunteers with an appreciation dinner. Because of COVID-19, that dinner has been postponed until later in the year. During National Volunteer Week, the volunteer services team sent cards to show thanks and appreciation to the volunteers. “We can never thank them enough,” Shrake said. “We have been trying to lift their spirits during this time, and we have had contact a couple times a week.” To learn how to become a volunteer, call 937-335-5191, or visit the website at https://www.hospiceofmiamicounty.org/volunteer-services/.
