The library will welcome gardener Ruth Bowell of Troy to talk about GardeninG for Butterflies on Thursday, June 13, 6:30 p.m., in the library's Community Room. Ruth says that Ohio is home to over 144 species of butterflies and many are easily drawn in to home gardens for close-up views. In this workshop, learn about the life cycle of the butterfly, why many are in serious decline, how to design a butterfly garden (with tips on container gardens), and plants you can use both for nectar and for feeding hungry caterpillars. Ruth is a Master Gardener who has a passion for native plants and the wildlife they support. She has certified her home backyard in Troy for wildlife, which supports butterflies, moths, etc. Light refreshments served. The library would love to have several teen Volunteers this summer. Any student who has completed 6th Grade and up can apply to assist our Summer Reading Program as a Teen Volunteer. You can pick up applications from Mrs. Roeth. Teens involved will help with planning activities and implementation of our summer programs. Call for more information.

With Heartfelt Appreciation

Health Coverage Made Easy.

When the tornado hit our home on Iddings Rd., Don and I (82 and 77 years of age) unfortunately discovered what Mother Nature can do. We lost a lot of trees that held great meaning for us. Since we had no electric and the road was blocked, we were helped by some very kind volunteers who used chainsaws to cut a path so the ambulance could transport us to Hoffman United Methodist Church, where the Red Cross assisted us. We wish to especially thank Glynn Feltner, who responded immediately with a crew to clear the road. So many volunteers brought food and water, and even the Sheriff drove around to give out water. So many wonderful people (I believe they were German Baptist) came to rake, sweep, and cut up and clear tree branches. This remarkable group left during the time I was gone to get more gas, and when I returned I found our property had been beautifully cleared. We are so appreciative to all those who helped in any way to make this devastating event less traumatic for us.

We offer health coverage for: • Individuals without Group Coverage • Self-Employed • COBRA Alternative • Seniors looking for Medicare Supplement Options • Small Business

Young Birders’ Club to Meet June 15 With birds now on their nesting grounds we shift our focus from observing birds that are migrating through to increasing our understanding of what and how Ohio’s nesting birds are doing. This month we will visit Brukner Nature Center’s River’s Edge Property on Saturday, June 15, 9-11 a.m., and check bluebird boxes for nesting activity. We hope to find not just eastern bluebirds, but also tree swallows and purple martins. With our remaining time we will travel the Cascades Loop trail in search of nests hidden within the branches of the trees. Geared for students in Grades 6-12 with an interest in birding. High quality binoculars and field guides are provided for meetings and field trips, so no additional equipment is needed. For more details, please contact Brian at brian@bruknernaturecenter.com.

Valley Echoes by Gary Godfrey

It’s been a long time since we have had space for me to write my personal column. I just about fainted when my graphic department told me to write a column this week. To be honest, it has been very hard to sell advertising like we used to. Just like other businesses, we’ve been hit with the digital tidal wave. We understand that people can place their ads on Facebook, County classifieds, and others for FREE. You just can’t fight FREE! Enough about me - lets talked about something worthwhile. The Ohio Hospice of Miami County will hold its annual Butterfly Release and Memorial Service on June 23 at 2:00 and 4:30 p.m. The Cultural Center is located at 301 W. Main Street, Troy.

Page 9 - STILLWATER VALLEY ADVERTISER - JUNE 12, 2019

View from the Vista Scheduled June 16 At Brukner Center

Vacation Bible School Offered June 17-21 At Covington Church of the Brethren

Discover Brukner Nature Center’s vista birdlife and join members of the BNC Bird Club Sunday, June 16, 2-4 p.m., as you learn to identify our feathered friends. All levels of birders welcome, and binoculars will be available for your use. The nature center is located at 5995 Horseshoe Bend Rd., Troy.

The Covington Community would like to invite all children ages four thru students completing 5th grade to our Vacation Bible School. The theme is “ROAR: Life is Wild, God is Good.” This fun event will take place Monday thru Friday, June 17-21, 9 a.m. ‘til noon daily, at the Church of the Brethren. The program will conclude Friday evening by inviting all families to return at 5:30 for a picnic-style meal. Then, following at 6:30, the kids will present a fantastic program of songs and music. Early registration starts at 8:30 a.m. June 17. Forms are available at all local churches. For more information call 937-459-9897.

At the conclusion of the service, participants will release live butterflies in memory of loved ones. Music will be played during the butterfly release. Light refreshments will follow the service. “This is a beautiful way to remember and honor family members and friends who have touched our lives,” explained Heather Bolton, executive director of Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County. “If you have lost someone close to you, we encourage you to participate in this memorial service.” Registration is required, and there is a donation of $10 for each butterfly. If participants are not able to attend, butterflies will be released on their behalf. The deadline to register for the event is Friday, June 14. To register, go to the following website: hospiceofmiamicounty.org/event/butterflyrelease2019/2019-06-23. Download the registration form, complete it and return the form to Ohio Hospice of Miami County. For additional questions, you can call 937-573-2108. Ginger and I plan to register. We encourage you to do the same. This week’s bottom line: “Butterflies . . . Flowers that fly and all but sing.” - Robert Frost

My Book & Me Program a Huge Success at MUPL The Milton-Union Public Library held a My Book & Me program this past Spring. Children came into the library for four weeks to work on writing and illustrating their books. At the end of the month, children’s librarian Wendy Heisey put the books together for the children. They then had a “book showing” with refreshments for the kids to show off their finished books. Each little author was quite pleased with the end result!
