Covington Garden Club to Meet August 25

The Covington Garden Club will meet at the home of Cassandra Morrow on Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 6:30 p.m. Beverly Fine will serve as co-hostess. The program will be “Farming – Past and Present.”
J.R. Clarke Library Begins Renovation Project The J.R. Clarke Public Library in Covington recently entered into a contract with Andrew Circle Architects to begin a complete renovation of the library building. Alex Moore, left, president of the Library Board of Trustees, is pictured with Andrew Circle of Andrew Circle Architects, based in Ludlow Falls. The project is currently in the design and engineering phase, and will update all aspects the facility and provide ADA accessibility to the entire building. The library was originally built as a church in 1842, and has housed the J.R. Clarke Public Library since 1981. Construction is planned to begin in early 2021.

Fehlan Graduates from Ohio Farm Bureau’s AgriPOWER Class XI Program Lauren Fehlan of Troy recently graduated from Ohio Farm Bureau’s AgriPOWER Class XI. The elite leadership program was started in 2008 to help agricultural advocates gain influence over public policy issues that impact their businesses and communities. Fehlan is a farm marketer for Cargill and grew up on a diversified crop and livestock farm in Lorain County. She is a member of the Laura Lions Club, Ohio Soybean Association, and serves on the Miami County Farm Bureau board. She has a passion for farm safety and has been actively promoting grain bin safety in her community. Over the course of a year, Class XI participants learned from experts on how to become better leaders and advocates for the agricultural industry, including spokesperson and media training, etiquette training, social networking, and communications. They learned about public policy matters important to their local communities, as well as the state, nation, and world. They visited Laura Fehlan Washington, D.C. where they learned about national and global issues, and they visited diverse agricultural operations in Louisiana so they could better understand the differences and similarities in agriculture from state to state. In addition to Ohio Farm Bureau, AgriPOWER XI partners include Cargill, American Farmland Trust, Franklin County Farm Bureau, Clinton, Coshocton, Delaware, Fayette, Fulton, Knox County Farm Bureaus, Southern Ohio Ag and Community Development Fund, Ohio State University Delaware Extension, OFB Foundation, Ohio Soybean Council and the OFBF Water Quality Grant Program. Monty & Sue Stratton Celebrate 50 years of Marriage ~ Card Shower announCed ~

The children of Monty and Sue (van Hook) Stratton happily announce their parents’ 50th Wedding Anniversary. Monty and Sue, who reside in Pleasant Hill, were married August 29, 1970, in London, Kentucky, with the ceremony officiated by the bride’s grandfather. They have been blessed with four daughters – the late Robyn Davis; Angie Kendig, Covington; Amy Duling, Tipp City; and Katie Stratton, Troy. They also have nine grandchildren – Austin, Jude, and Poppy Duling; Aaron Davis; Emma and Ethan Kendig; Maddox Blair; and Phoebe and Sybil Clemmer. Monty retired from teaching at MiltonUnion Schools after 36 years, having made a positive impact on many students' lives. Sue was a selfless and loving homemaker and childcare provider. She now helps watch her grandbabies and loves it! Today they enjoy serving together at Grace Baptist Church of Ludlow Falls where Monty is the assistant pastor. Minster Oktoberfest Canceled The Minster Oktoberfest Board is saddened to announce the 46th annual Minster Oktoberfest will not be held October 2-4 as in the past. After much discussion, collaboration with our nearly 50 committee members, gathering feedback from our many partners, and meetings with the Auglaize County Health Dept., we were not able to figure out a way to hold the event and adhere to all the guidelines set forth by the Ohio Dept. of Health and the Governor’s office due to COviD-19. This decision was not made lightly, and we feel it is ultimately in the best interest of the health and well-being of our patrons, staff, volunteers, committee members, organizations, and the people that live in the great village of Minster. A special thank you goes out to the Auglaize County Health Dept. for meeting with us several times to try to work out a way for us to hold the event. We felt it would be a challenge to reasonably adhere to the current mask mandate along with other restrictions, and there is potential for additional restrictions in the weeks to come. in addition to the cost involved with social distancing, the potential for more restrictions creates a situation where the festival might be canceled or even shut down mid-festival. Many people think of the Minster Oktoberfest as just a beer and food festival. However, it is possibly the biggest or only fundraiser for the 29 non-profit organizations that participate every year. And as much as we want to continue with the social part of the festival, we also need to look at the financial impacts of having low attendance, the added expenses of adhering to additional restrictions, or the possibility that the event gets halted just days prior. The Minster Oktoberfest as we traditionally love will not be happening this year. We are, however, making plans to honor this year’s Grand Marshal as well as the button design winner. We are trying to create plans to safely hold our Little Miss Oktoberfest and Miss Oktoberfest contests, so be on the lookout for those registrations. When students go back to school, we still plan to inject the Oktoberfest spirit by continuing with our coloring contest. And because we are counting this as an official Oktoberfest year, we are planning to have event collectibles, such as buttons, mugs, and pins available to purchase. So the spirit of the Minster Oktoberfest will still be felt and celebrated – it will just be different in how we do it. “The people of Minster feel the Oktoberfest is not just an event. it’s a feeling, a spirit, a happy mood combined with warmth and friendship of the community, our gemutlichkeit.” Finally, while we are not having the social portion of the Oktoberfest, we encourage everyone to celebrate our community, our friendships, and our German heritage on a daily basis. And when October 2-4 comes up on the calendar, we encourage everyone to celebrate with us by enjoying a bratwurst or mettwurst, sipping a beverage, and dancing to at least one German song that weekend.
