FOREWORD BY HYUNG MIN KIM Urban planning is a process to seek out best solutions to the planning site. Defining planning sites requires understanding of the local area, urban challenges and available technology. To provide planning and design solutions, planners should go through rigorous site analysis at multiple scales with multiple aspects. Understanding key issues and identifying opportunities on the site are essential steps for formulating visions and objectives. ABPL30060 Urban Precinct Studio has encouraged students to undertake this complicated planning process and this booklet is a collection of executive summaries of planning ideas that each student has produced. To guide planning ideas, in 2018, Urban Precinct Studio offered five streamlined themes: Healthy Precinct, Transit-Oriented Development, Tourism/Heritage Preservation, Place Making and Craigieburn West. These studio titles reflect the focus of current planning practices in Australia and beyond. Urban Precinct Studio, as a capstone project for urban planning and design undergraduate major, aims to facilitate and lead discussions about best planning practices and the role of urban planners. Many students from Urban Precinct Studio will soon become an urban planner. How we react to urban challenges will define the future of the cities where current and future generations will live, work, learn, play, exercise, love and die. I firmly believe welldisciplined urban planners will bring hope to cities.

HYUNG-MIN KIM SUBJECT COORDINATOR Dr. Hyungmin Kim is the Senior Lecturer and Subject Coordinator for Urban Precinct Studio. He has lectured at RMIT University and Xian JiaotongLiverpool University and has a PHD in Urban Planning from the University of Melbourne and a Masters of Urban Planning from Seoul National University. His work and teaching focuses on economic and spatial dynamics of cities especially globalization, global cities, urban and environmental economics, livability, healthy cities and the Asia-Pacific region.

Dr. Hyung Min Kim (Subject Coordinator) on behalf of Dr. Kiran Shinde, Dr. Leila Mahmoudi Farahani, Ms. Targol Khorram, and Mr. Ha Thai

ST U D I O B R IE FS URBAN PRECINCT STUDIO OVERVIEW The focus of this studio is developing or redeveloping a precinct-scale site. Students have undertaken site investigations and prepared analysis that led into developing a vision for the precinct and a related urban design and planning framework. Their future imaginings of their precinct have been presented with concept designs of the precinct. This studio has emphasised on the relation between the fields of urban design and urban planning. Studios and presentations were carried out in an environment that simulates real-life projects with an emphasis on group collaboration and presentation/communication skills. CRAIGIEBURN WEST PRECINCT STUDIO KIRAN SHINDE Craigieburn West is a greenfield site adjacent to the rapidly developing suburb of Craigieburn which is about 26 km north of Melbourne’s central business district. The area comes under the jurisdiction of City of Hume which currently has a population of about 50,000 plus. In this studio, the focus is on preparing the Craigieburn West Precinct Structure Plan which will cover an area of about 500 hectares. The aim of the structure plan is to address growth needs of the area through the provision of residential, recreation, community and employment opportunities, working closely with Victoria Planning Authority. HEALTHY PRECINCT STUDIO LEILA MAHMOUDI FARAHANI The Healthy Precinct studio envisions a precinct that aims to enhance physical and mental health and wellbeing through active transport, air and water quality, open and green-spaces, social and spatial justice, housing quality and employment opportunities. The studio seeks to develop precinct structure plans that improve liveability and sustainability of suburban communities across Victoria while enhancing residents lived experiences. Precincts will include Monash; Parkville; Footscray; Altona; and Sunshine.

PLACEMAKING STUDIO TARGOL KHORRAM Placemaking is a people-centred approach to the planning design and management of public spaces. During place week Victoria in May 2018, place making leaders from all around the world discussed how we can move from liveability to lovability in our city planning and design. This studio will improve your knowledge, skills and passion to confidently re-imagine and reinvent public spaces as the heart of every community whether in an urban, suburban or rural context. Precincts include Stonnington (Chapel Street); Richmond (Bridge Road); Docklands; and Point Cook. TOURISM/HERITAGE STUDIO KIRAN SHINDE Melbourne is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Australia [In 2015 it recorded more than 16 million domestic day-trip visitors, 8.4 million domestic overnight visitors and 2.3 million overnight international visitors]. The core city is a hub for culinary, cultural, sporting and events tourism. While the levels of satisfaction amongst tourists is generally very high, it is necessary to ensure that the city can cope with the heavy influx of tourists and is able to maintain its leadership position. This studio aims to develop tourism precincts within the city and suggest precinct structure plans that will further enhance and promote sustainable tourism. It will seek to rejuvenate heritage areas, identify new opportunities, and recommend improvements to ailing infrastructure and services that are necessary for maintaining a high level of tourism experience. Potential precincts may include areas around Federation Square; Carlton Gardens and Parliament; Town Hall and the Block; State Library and Gaol; Yarra River; St. Kilda Pier; and Docklands.

TRANSIT-ORIENTED STUDIO HA THAI Transit-oriented development (TOD) is a planning concept that promotes well-designed, human-scale, high-density, mixeduse urban development around transit stations. The principles apply to large urban areas surrounding public transport stations or corridors. The TOD precincts are characterised by a rapid and frequent transit service; high quality pedestrian and cyclist friendly public spaces and streets, high-density developments around the central transit stations, mixed-use vibrant streetscapes. Precincts will include Brunswick; Coburg; Moonee Valley; and Northcote.
