I Chen Lu I've been thinking about what I can bring to the world. Maybe I can do nothing. I am always getting more from the world, compared to what I can do for her. I don't like to talk about ideals, dreams and aspirations, for that this kind of things are too nothingness and vague, and I am too small. I like to do things quietly and wait for others to discover me. But this leadership journey changed me. I am no longer lost in a meaningless sense of myself, or a wheat sprout waiting to be discovered. In this internship, I met all kinds of people. They were of different nationalities and complexions, but they all shared the same warm and kind hearts. I still remember the first time I tried to design the cover and back pages of a publication. One of my teammates took the initiative to teach me how to do it and let me not be afraid and nervous. I also remember that when I posted my designed cover to the group, friends from all over the world expressed their affirmation and admiration for my design. When I accepted the challenge again and again, the challenge also became easy and simple, so I would take the initiative to be responsible and take on some tasks.I'm still shy and timid, but I'm changing. In daring again and again, I also find my own meaning. As Mother Teresa said, "Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love." The combination of each person's articles makes a publication; Different topics, different publications together, is a microcosm of the whole world, the reflection of the world in our eyes. I am an English major, so this internship is also a kind of try for my future career path. I hope I can stand on a bigger stage to express my ideas, even if I am shy and afraid. During this internship, we communicated and cooperated with different partners and made joint efforts and progress in the same direction. This is a very good thing. I like nature and animals, and I like the feeling of a group of people working hard for the same high goal. I will probably work in some non-profit organizations in the future, so this internship gives me valuable and preliminary experience. Of course, there's a long way to go, and I don't know where I'm going yet, but I'm on my way. Hopefully tomorrow, the world and I will be better and better.

服务社群 提升自我 ——我在 AFI 的经历与收获 陈崇宇 不知不觉间,在 AFI(Ariel Foundation International)的旅程就只剩下最后一个月了。 谢谢您,Dr.King!

Serving the Community and Improving Myself --My Experience and Gains at Ariel Foundation International Chongyu Chen Before I know it, there is only one month left in my leadership journey at Ariel Foundation International (AFI). Over the past few months, I have gone from being a novice who rarely spoke up in meetings to an active leader who participates in group discussions, organizes meetings, and actively communicates with my teammates. I believe that this journey is destined to be a very special experience in my life. In January of this year, I received an internship offer from AFI, which was very exciting. Before I applied, I understood that AFI's vision to promote global leadership for children and youth through extensive international collaboration and positive advocacy was a perfect fit with my personal values and academic background, and therefore I valued this internship or leadership development journey as a valuable opportunity and honor. I remember when I participated in the AFI welcome meeting, I had the opportunity to meet and greet young leaders from all over the world, of different genders or ethnicities, from different countries and cultures, but because of our shared interest and love for youth affairs and international development, we came together here to send our blessings and greetings to each other and to share our mission as leaders to create a more equal and better world. It is AFI that brings us together, just as an old Chinese poem says - "Though bosom friends miles apart, no distance if sharing a heart." After the meeting, we got involved in the work of AFI one after another, and I personally joined the family as a proud Chinese leader in March. The first event I officially participated in was an online seminar on the International Day of Social Work 2022 organized by a UN affiliate. As a social work student, I was very fortunate to hear the experiences and stories of frontline social workers from different parts of the world. Afterwards, I joined the Social Media team and played the role of team leader, creating social media accounts on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Bilibili and other platforms with my Chinese partners, uploading articles and videos created by our team of Chinese leaders about Chinese culture, Chinese youth and world development to The video and articles about Chinese culture, Chinese youth and world development created by our China Leaders team will be uploaded to the Internet to convey the voices of Chinese youth. In addition, I am very grateful for the encouragement and help I received from Dr. King, who is knowledgeable, enthusiastic, humble, accommodating, friendly, and always full of positive energy, who patiently answered all the questions I had during my leadership journey, and who constantly encouraged us during the meetings to actively participate instead of passing up opportunities for fear of making mistakes. She is always inclusive and encouraging, allowing us to do what we want to do in our journey at AFI, and allowing us to bring our talents to bear as young Chinese to create a better world and make change happen. For all that, Dr. King really has many shining points in her that we young people should respect and learn from. Thank you, Dr. King!

As a social work undergraduate student and a young person who intends to study abroad and wants to be able to engage in a social service career and work towards solving social problems and enhancing the well-being of communities and society, being able to contribute positively with my own efforts and grow together with my partners through collaboration is an important goal I am pursuing and a valuable asset I have gained from my journey at AFI. Empowering the disadvantaged, working to change the world, and striving to create a better future are my career plans, life vision, and ambitions as a social work student and a global citizen. I am grateful to AFI for giving me the opportunity to take my first step on a broad international stage. I will take the service experience I gained at AFI into my future study and service career and continue to realize more possibilities.

AFI Changemakers at the UN for Holocaust Remembrance 以 及 AFI Changemakers at the United Nation’s Expert Mechanism on the Right to Development(联 合国关于发展权的专家机制) 在前者中,我所撰写的文章名为教育中的性别不平等——关注女童教育。

The Participation of the Youth in Global Governance Chu Jie Attending the work of international organizations is the embodiment of young people's participation in global governance. Young people, especially those from China and other developing countries, who are committed to global governance will enhance the representation and voice of developing countries in international affairs and contribute their wisdom and strength to the reform and construction of the global governance system. Dealing with international affairs requires people of all countries to pool their wisdom and work together. The ultimate purpose is to improve the well-being of people around the world, maintain peace and stability of the international community, and promote better global development. We need to work together to address the challenges the world is facing and those may face in the future, practice multilateralism and contribute to the building of a community with a shared future for mankind. As far as I am concerned, participating in global governance is a way for college students to enrich ourselves and learn things that can only be learned through practical work experience. With the accelerating development of globalization, it is no longer enough for college students to master professional knowledge to cope with the process of globalization. The global perspective is exceedingly essential to us. To prepare for the transition from school to society, college students should take part in a variety of internships and social activities to improve our sensitivity to politics, economics and education. An internship with an international organization is a great option.
Since January, I have been working at Ariel Foundation International (AFI) . AFI promotes partnerships, peace and prosperity through entrepreneurship via education, experience through service, leadership and support of children, young people and their communities worldwide. We believe in the leadership and entrepreneurship of young people, support the development of young children, and advocate peace and cooperation. All these happen to coincide with my own value orientation. During my time at AFI, I was exposed to many international sources.I attended UN conferences, wrote publications after meetings, shared my ideas with young leaders from other countries and received opinions from others. All these are extremely important to me as I long for a larger information exchange platform.
Two publications with which I was specifically involved were AFI Changemakers at the UN for Holocaust Remembrance and AFI Changemakers at the United Nation's Expert Mechanism on the Right to Development. In the former one, I wrote an article called Gender Inequality in Education - Focusing on Girls' Education. This article is based on my own experience. When I worked as a volunteer teacher in a village in a rural area, I found that the local people had already defined the social roles
9
of boys and girls, and in this case they were not given any choice at all. Girls are out of school mainly because of poverty, culture, society, mindset and so on. And these factors are deeply related to the development of a country. The World Bank says that girls’ education is one of the best investments that a country can make. It helps to positively impact nine of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. When girls are educated, the problems in health, nutrition, employment can get some positive impact. Therefore, it’s of great significance for us to pay attention to the problem of girls returning to school and gender inequality in education. This is something I've always wanted to talk about, and I'm glad AFI has given me a platform and an opportunity to share my perspective with others. In the publication AFI Changemakers at the United Nation's Expert Mechanism on the Right to Development, I explored the topic of What Can the Right to Development Entitle People. After attending the meeting and reading relevant literature, I realized that there are limits to the development of countries that have lost its right to development. I believe the same is true for people. The development of a country should always be people-centered, put the well-being of the people at the top priority and strengthen international cooperation to deal with worldwide crisis.
In addition to the publication writing, our group of AFI China leaders organized a Chinese Club to express the spiritual outlook of Chinese youth on a different theme each week. In this process, Dr.King, our director, gave us enough freedom to develop weekly themes and publish them on social media in the form of videos and articles. As the person responsible for the video group, I have produced a lot and gained a lot in these times of content production. In this process, my team members and I tried various forms to present our theme. From the single interview form to the introduction of content, from the release of long videos to the transition to short videos, we tried a lot and overturned a lot. Up to now, we are still trying to explore a more attractive way of presentation in different forms. The first theme of our Chinese Club was related to young people's preferences. I invited seven or eight people from different regions with different hobbies to talk about their ideas. At the beginning, both editing and expression were simple, which was the beginning of our groping for progress. Later, when talking about music-related topics, I paid more attention to the selection of interviewees and invited relevant practitioners, which improved the professional knowledge of the interview. As a result, our club has changed from simple sharing to popularization of professional knowledge.
I am an English major student studying in Shanghai Normal University. As the most widely spoken language in the world, the study of English is more than the study of a language. It also includes the survey of English-speaking countries and even the study of the world picture. Participating in the work of international organizations is a good practice opportunity to enhance the understanding of global governance and global culture. Respect for other cultures is the basis of participating in global governance, and respect for one's own culture is also an issue that cannot be ignored. At the first meeting, Dr.King repeatedly
10
asked us to refer to ourselves by our own names rather than by an English one. She said that having a foreign name shows respect to other cultures, but in an international organization, we should respect different cultures from all over the world, and let others learn to respect our own culture. Therefore, it is essential to use our own name rather than a foreign one. This struck me a lot.
My own plan for the future is quite clear. After finishing my undergraduate study, I hope to go to English-speaking countries to conduct further research and study on international relations and global affairs. After that, I am eager to use my professional knowledge and practical experience to work in international organizations and devote myself to global governance.

Half a Year’s Journey Haoqiang Yang Internships in international organizations have given me a different perspective and a different sense of experience. In the past, they all lived in a relatively closed comfort zone, and always tried to procrastinate in the face of difficulties. International organizations have changed my procrastination. I have gradually developed a plan for my life, work and rest. The story is also gradually moving towards the expected development, and the expectations for the future are also increasing. After several months of internship, what has improved is not only the superficial oral English level and expanded knowledge, but also more psychological changes and more solutions to difficulties. Being calm has gradually become my attitude to dealing with trouble. At the same time, in these short months, I met a group of excellent partners, whose excellent expression ability impressed me deeply. Everyone has his own shining point, and also let me see that there are people outside the people. Never be arrogant and arrogant, nor easily belittle yourself, because what you have may also be what others desire. Because my major is law, my experience in international organizations has given me a certain understanding of foreign-related organizations. I have also taken relevant courses in private international law and public international law. The combination of theory and practice has also given me a deeper understanding of organizations outside the international line. In the future, I hope to engage in some foreign-related legal practice, and this experience of distance internship in international organizations is an opportunity to become the first stop of my foreign-related experience. I believe this international distance practice will leave a valuable memory in my future practice. Come on in the future!

This picture was taken during the first one-on-one communication

Special Journey with AFI Peiwei Zhu My name is Peiwei Zhu, a freshmen majored in law. I think I am not the type that like to express my thought and can communicate to someone new initiatively. So when I participated in this internship (or as Dr.King says it's a leadership), I felt uneasy. Although I desired to communicate with different people , I also felt that I’m not ready to face so many different people domestic and abroad, especially I need to use English frequently. But since the first one-on-one meeting with Dr.King and the weekly meetings afterwards, I had felt the support and encouragement from Dr.King. She is always says how wonderful we are, encourage us don't be afraid to make mistakes in English and express more in English, also she is so respectful to our culture. From the internship till now, I think I become more brave, I can show my thought more easily than before. At the same time also exercise my English ability, especially the listening skills. It's still not so well now, but it has been some progress. In my point of view, communication skills and English ability are two important part for a law student, because we will face various people, and we need to know their experience and what they want, that's why we need communication skills. And also English has the very high demand in the non-lawsuit business. I am very lucky in this internship process, have the exercise of both parts. Besides, I think it's also very rewarding because I've tried a lot of things that I haven't tried before, and I feel like I can do more than I thought I could, which is really inspiring. During the internship, I also worked with the social media group to help run the bilibili account. I had always wanted to run a account myself but I hadn’t try it. At this time help AFI to run this account was sort of a fulfillment of my wish.In that time, we've published 13 videos, 10 columns, and about seven related topics. If I were to run my own account in the future, I believe this would be a very valuable experience.

Human Right to Development Activities from International Organizations —LET’S LEARN FROM ARIEL FOUNDATION INTERNATIONAL AS AN EXAMPLE
Tianyi Zhang Today, countries all around the world are aware of the issue of development. Among them, the human right to development is based on the prerequisite that the human person is the central subject of the development process. It is a comprehensive economic, social, cultural and political process, which aims at the constant improvement of whole populations, but be simultaneously mindful of the needs of the individual. So, we everyone should be an active participant, and it’s the state’s development pursuits for right to development too. Some days ago, I have read a publication by Ariel Foundation International, AFI CHANGEMAKERS AT THE HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL REPORT ON THE RIGHT TO DEVELOPMENT,which impressed me by its responsibilities as an international organization for human right issue. To begin with, about the development issues and problems, there are careful analysis in terms of human right development, basic needs, marginalized groups and multinational cooperation. The right to development aims to emphasize the centrality of the individual and their rights. Nevertheless, the predominant issue regarding human rights and the right to development is a perceived lack of respect for self-determination and human dignity in domestic development practices. McCook argued that by simply setting out the rights of individuals, the international community assumes that the work is done; however, in reality there is much discrepancy between how human dignity is defined, interpreted an implemented-not only by member states of the Human Rights Council but also those in Civil Society. These days, the amount of people worldwide who cannot sufficiently access everything they need to fulfil their basic needs, which presents the future of the program with serious hurdles. Additionally, the problem that results from marginalized groups is a cyclical process. the lack of socio-economic access of some societal groups contributes to the violation of their human rights. The violation of the human rights of certain sectors of society in turn hinders the process of development. Besides, some useful recommendations are as follows. First of all, there is a necessity for greater institutional links within the United Nations and between other international organizations, for greater articulation and fluidity in the implementation of human rights in all practices. The reason why international organizations should get involved is due to the fact that there is a shared responsibility between them to promote and implement human rights in a development context where many countries are developing facing challenges. UN can become an essential role in advocating strategies within the human rights council and meaningful practical activities such as offering a warm hand to the disable so that human right to development can be enforced.
17
Besides, government all over the world should pay attention to necessity of a full assessment of the issue of provision and facilitate, especially for developing countries and areas. Without the effective policies, facilitates and law, many countries in the global south are ultimately left behind. Problems of inequality can also exacerbate the different levels and capabilities for supporting development. Therefore, there needs to be a state-by-state assessment of governments capability for these problems. In the end, participation of people in decision-making whose lives have been affected by poor growth strategies, and self-management of development projects as an important part of the basic needs agenda. It is perplexing phenomenon that often those making developmental decisions for developing countries are bodies and individuals with no real stake or awareness in the needs or procedures that are unique to the state in question. Therefore, it is recommended that is heightened participation and consultation with people directly impacted by development procedure, as this will make the pursuit of the right to development as a universal norm better targeted and more efficient, as it takes into consideration first-hand examples of where resources and capacity building could be best targeted. By talking to members of remote communities and marginalized groups, there is the assurance that development will spread to the most remote of places.

The Reawakening of My Patriotism Yifei Zhu In a blink of an eye, I have been an AFI intern for 5 months, and this time next month may be the day I will say goodbye to AFI. As I parted, I unconsciously recalled what I wrote in the WeChat Moments when I first joined AFI: “ I habitually reported my English name, however, Dr. King said that for the purpose of respecting the cultural background of various countries, she wanted to know my real name. Although this was only a small thing, it made me feel for the first time that I was respected.” I think, this is the reason why my first meeting with Dr. King that day is still fresh in my memory. There is no doubt that AFI is an open and inclusive family. As the first batch of Chinese interns to join this international organization, I was both excited and nervous at first. The excitement is of course because it was the first time that I submitted my resume and I successfully got an internship opportunity in an international organization. However, I was nervous because I was worried about my Chinese identity and the various unfriendly phenomena that I might face in an international organization. Since I am also studying a bachelor ’ s degree in Accounting at California State University, San Bernardino, I am well aware that China ’ s image on the international stage is not as good as what our Chinese people understand, and even sometimes, due to some deliberate misunderstandings, Chinese people are often slandered by prejudice and undeserved discrimination. It is precisely because I saw with my own eyes that my classmates were treated unfairly in the United States that I was deeply concerned about this. However, what amazed and moved me is that Dr. King, one of the founders of AFI, has always been committed to eliminating stereotypes and prejudices in AFI, calling on people from different regions and countries to cooperate sincerely and trust each other, respect each other’s culture and ideas. She was the one who made the expectation of me to “become a changemaker” and she encouraged me by saying that, “ You speak English well, try to be a representative for your country, and your culture.” It was these words that woke me up. In addition to being touched, I cannot help but feel a little ashamed, because during my three-year university study career, under the influence of Western culture, my original intention has been gradually forgotten by me. I used to choose the Sino-US joint training program with passion and hope that I can become a talent who can contribute to my motherland in the future, but now, I have forgotten my motherland and only want to study abroad and seek a way out overseas. Although Dr. King’s words are simple, to me, they are deafening. I cannot help but look back on my own life path. Are all the ups and downs I have experienced in the past twenty years just a foreshadowing to satisfy my own selfishness in the future? No, they should not be. Although at this moment, my strength is still very small, but I am a part of China and one of the inheritors of Chinese culture. The opportunities AFI has provided me again and again made me want to do something for China and to promote Chinese culture to the world. So, I started to try
29
things that I would never do on my own initiative: writing articles and editing publications to introduce things in China; making short videos to promote Chinese culture, and so on. The past few months in AFI have been a period of re-awakening of my patriotism. For me, it carries not only an internship career but also my passion to contribute the rest of my life to my motherland.
