1 Chapter 1: Introduction Can Sustainable Design and Communal Living Practices Enhance Holistic Healing In a Live-In Wellness Retreat?

Introduction Society today is increasingly more consumer and technology driven and less connected with nature and our physical body, mind and spirit. The typical modernized human psyche is constantly bombarded with media and product, a majority of which is sold for the benefit of the manufacturer and some of which at the cost of the consumers’ health and well-being. Knowledge of the common products which are readily available is often sugar-coated, making it difficult to understand the effects that they cause in the body. From work, to food, to home, the majority of our days are spent separate from the Earth and the natural elements that give us happiness, renewal, and understanding of ourselves. Interior design, when planned sustainably, in conjunction with communal living styles and holistic healing practices may help foster rebirth of the human connection to the self, and the environment. When this reconnection takes place, health and happiness are often the results. Many holistic wellness facilities exist in sustainably built communities, where guests are invited for short or long term stays to participate in activities which encourage a reconnection with themselves, other living things, and nature. Many facilities like this already exist all around the world as spas, hostels, internships, nonprofit foundations, and wellness retreats. The purpose of this research is to understand how sustainable design and communal living can enhance holistic healing practices in a live-in wellness retreat. This facility will work to educate inhabitants of the benefits of living an organic, environmentally conscious, and holistically healthy lifestyle.

Statement of the Problem Many health problems today are the cause of a chemically based lifestyle that is separated from nature. We are affecting our bodies’ natural systems through every aspect of our lives; from the processed foods we eat, to how we make our flowers grow, the materials we use to construct our buildings. When we are cocooned inside poorly constructed buildings, we are cut off from this life force. Humans need energetic contact with other living things to heal the mind body and soul. We have moved continuously deeper into dense cities and are surrounded by more people, yet we have increasingly less direct human contact, much to the effect of technological communication. Richard Moss is a visionary leader and author of six books, which give insight into transformation, self-healing, and the art of conscious living. He said “We appear to be individual bodies, but this individuality is also a constant state of equilibrium between a true personal authenticity and a continuous participation with the collective energy of all humanity and all existence (Moss, 1993, p. 11). Interior Design can facilitate the social habits, health, and activities of the users. A designer is able to encourage interaction between users by designing flexible lounge and activity spaces in an open floor plan. Interaction with other living things is a fundamental aspect to wellness. Nature is an extremely effective device for internal healing because it acts as an enveloping source of this life energy we need. Sustainable design helps deliver this energy to us while we are physically separate from it, indoors. By incorporating nature into building interiors through systems, materials, and views, a healthier building, and thus healthier users are achieved. Sustainable design compliments holistic healing techniques by supporting needs of natural light, fresh air, and openness of the interior to the outdoors. Western medicine is based on chemical theory, thus success of these techniques are not directly affected

by interior conditions. Some healing techniques that could be enhanced by green design could include Chinese medicine, ayurvedic tradition, herbology, homeopathy, and naturopathy. Concept The concept for this wellness retreat is flow. Energy is the invisible force that gives life to everything on Earth. It is constantly being exchanged, and is therefore constantly flowing. Society today has attempted to change the natural flow, for example, by placing restrictions in waterways and through overconsumption of resources from the Earth. Flow requires balance with variety, harmony, unity and rhythm. This wellness retreat will teach the mind, body and spirit how to reopen the energetic flow inside, and thus heal itself. Sustainable design is particularly suited to this project because it also allows the flow between civilization and nature to reconnect. User and Client Profile The target user of this wellness facility would fall into a realm of people who embrace health of the mind, body and soul through alternative healing techniques. They may practice open-mindedness, alternative medicines, and enjoy connectivity with nature through their work, home life or free time. The user profile may include people who reject mainstream ideology and consumerism, and take an active stance on political, environmental and social issues. Age is not a defining aspect in the target market, as these ideas have been present for many decades, and followed by people of many origins. The user would also support local and organic farming, hand craft, fair trade, and small business. The client would be someone of similar mindset and morality, who may live in the retreat as their home, perhaps with family, perhaps not. Their efforts center on educating people about the capability of holistic wellness practices, and the

4 Communal Living and Holistic Wellness in a Sustainable Environment

triple-bottom-line truth about western medicine, modern thought, and corporate mentality. Ultimately, this would move people towards a happier and healthier lifestyle, and an educated respect for natural systems and resources. Both user and client may embrace alternative fuels and chemical-free lifestyles to better the Earth and their own bodies. They enjoy time and strong relationships with loved ones, as well as outdoor activities. The user and client have a desire for new experiences and travel, taking a simple, thoughtful and meaningful approach to life. Though these are typical profiles, other users may include those looking for alternative answers to health issues that western medicine has not improved or users embarking on a new lifestyle. Sarasota is a desirable location for this retreat because of the demographic of educated people who can be more understanding of alternative healing therapies. Research Rationale This research aims to improve the health of the mind, body and soul of people through the use of natural healing techniques, communal support and healthy, sustainable design. This research will use comparative arguments to explore opposing perspectives of the thesis. It will investigate the healing ability inherent in a design which incorporates nature in contrast to a building constructed without awareness of the environment. A communal support system can act as encouragement and reassurance in learning. A person’s comfort and understanding when learning alone will be contrasted with the effectiveness of learning when that subject is with other people. Subjects will be interviewed on their learning experiences and impressions while interacting with participants in a holistic program or environment. Regarding the site, the project could be retrofitted into an existing building in junction with improved systematic efficiencies; it could also be a candidate for biotechtural design to be built for optimum efficiency in its exact

5 Communal Living and Holistic Wellness in a Sustainable Environment

location. LEED Standards and careful budgeting will play a managerial role in the design to set an example for future projects as one that can be implemented anywhere. Project Organization The project will inform the needs of the space in relation to the senses, and to encourage a close familial atmosphere. Lighting, color, air quality and circulation, acoustics, and indoor to outdoor views are of the utmost importance, as they are highly effective to the human psyche. Spacial planning will determine adequate square footage needs for each area, and adjacency planning will delegate outdoor access and views to spaces which require them most. Multifunctional spaces must allow flexibility for large or small groups, for uses that may include informative workshops, yoga, meditation, tai chi, dietary learning, and others. Additional activity spaces may include a sauna or sweat lodge, swimming facilities, acupuncture, massage, and consultation offices. Facilitative spaces need to cater to permanent and work-exchange staff, as well as live-in guests since they will all be designated as one body of people, without separation. This is the programmatic implementation of a family home style dwelling, which will provide enough privacy for each inhabitant, while also encouraging collaboration, interaction, education, and comfort. User needs will include laundry, sleeping quarters, kitchen and dining, and social spaces. The facility may accommodate up to 25 inhabitants at a time, with regard for ADA standards. Historical research, case studies, survey, and interview will be the main highways of research. Images and information will illustrate how sustainable design compliments holistic practices to create a supportive connection between users, space, and nature. The program document will illustrate the design considerations needed to absolve the research question, including bubble diagrams to illustrate particular spacial needs. The bubble

6 Communal Living and Holistic Wellness in a Sustainable Environment

diagram will show how each space interacts with one another and encourages inhabitants to do the same. Inspirational images and concept in conjunction with a project statement will be the driving force of the design application. Parti diagrams and perspective sketches will give the feel of the design graphically, along with a materials pallet to give more information about color and sustainability in the space. A floor plan will show the design in connection with nature and the human factors which make the design holistically comfortable, educational, and communally encouraging.

7 Chapter 2: Historical, Observational, and Interactive Research Can Sustainable Design and Communal Living Practices Enhance Holistic Healing In a Live-In Wellness Retreat?

Historical Research Time has changed the thought and methodology many times over regarding medical practice, the human effect on the environment, and communal living. All of these concepts have been present as far as history goes back, some recognized and some simply accepted without conscious acknowledgement. Interior design has the ability to enhance the efficacy of holistic healing in a communal living setting. Sustainable design works particularly well with the goals of holistic communities, as they often incorporate the same virtues in everyday life, and in medicine, as are seen in environmentally conscious design Medicine in History. Medicine has forever been a way to heal the body, practiced by a single person who knows the way best. In some cultures, this person is called a “medicine man”, in others a “shaman” and in others a “physician”; but all these people have the same goal to heal. About 6,000 years ago, the human body was thought to operate by magic using charms and potions to rid the body of harmful spirits thought be the source of sickness. It wasn't until about 5,000 years ago that the body was being studied in China, India Greece and Egypt. These cultures studied the body as a system of physical, mental, and spiritual unity, function inside the universe. Through surgical studies, civilizations learned the function of human life, including the energy that powered the body, supplying vitality and healing ability. (Monte, 1993, p.7). From the very beginning, medicine was thought to be an issue of spirit, rather than the physical function of the body's systems. Practitioners believed in a balance between these systems to achieve true health. It was not until the last few centuries that man has though of medicine as an

8 Communal Living and Holistic Wellness in a Sustainable Environment

applied science, rather than a methodology to enhance the body's natural healing ability. “The idea of life force points to a major difference between these early traditional societies and modern ones dominated by the tools and techniques of scientific medicine” (Monte 1993, p.8). Modern orthodox medicine has the benefit of a quick fix, while traditional healing has the benefit of long term results, by treating the root of the problem. We are fortunate to have a myriad of methods to heal a sickness, however the stance of this research is that the triple bottom line of regular medicine is harmful to the environment during production and can be detrimental to the patient as well, while holistic natural methods rarely cause damage to related or unrelated parties. Interior design is needed by both medical practices in very different ways. Orthodox medicine requires a sterile environment to minimize germs and the spread of disease by using unsustainable synthetic materials and harsh chemical cleaners. The environment minimally accommodates for the comfort of the patient, and is designed for the ease of sterilization. However, studies have shown that when natural elements are incorporated into healthcare design, including plants, views, and art, that patients heal faster and more completely. “Over the past several decades, research in a variety of fields has shown that contact with nature generates emotional, physiological, social and cognitive benefits in a wide array of contexts…improved emotional functioning, improved attention capacity and feelings of self-worth, and reduced mental and physical stress” (Guenther 2008, p.85). This is a strong point in holistic healthcare. The spirit of the facility has a direct effect on the patient, which the practitioner understands as a healer of not only the body, but the mind and spirit as well. The functional design plays an impact on the health of the building itself regarding interior air quality, light quality and other human comfort factors. Design should be used as an additional healing method to calm the body and boost the spirits. This attention to a naturalistic interior atmosphere makes sustainable design

9 Communal Living and Holistic Wellness in a Sustainable Environment

particularly suited to holistic healing practices. When looking at the triple bottom line with intent to build sustainably, a designer must look at the practice of the client, the manufacturing and materials used in the design, and the function of the building as a whole system to ensure a healthy environment. In a modern medical practice, the design must endure the heavy traffic and chemicals going in and out of the facility for treatment, the synthetic and sometimes environmentally harmful materials that must be used to ensure durability and sterilization, and the resource consumption of the methods practiced in the facility. These factors make for a very unsustainable environment that is removed from natures healing ability. When green design is employed in an alternative healing environment, sustainability is only increased by the simple methods used, lack of chemicals in the environment, and the acknowledgement of a need for nature's presence in the space.

Sustainability in History. When talking of sustainability, in the beginning it was not sustainability, it was common sense and respect for a system which was not fully understood. Before the first settlers on the American continent arrived, the Native Americans knew how to work with the land and gain form it's resources without depleting them. When the British ships eventually hit land in 1492, they were quick to harvest, consume and expand on the new land that seemed infinite. Americans today have not learned to give up that lust for new merchandise, and want continuously more of it; but everything comes at a cost. Today we see a cost in third world countries which are being exploited for cheap labor, war over resources, and the degradation of the environment throughout the world. We have continuously continued to exploit the Earth's resources and thus have sparked more and more support to conserve and respect the natural world. Some of the first efforts towards this mission came during the time of the industrial revolution, when we first began to see a coal-fueled economy. In the late 1800's, President Roosevelt passed the first environmental regulations; the General Revision Act to conserve land, and the Refuse Act, to monitor water quality (Winchip, 2007, p.15) Conservationist and writer, John Muir founded the Sierra Club, an organization meant to preserve a “wild nature”, in 1892 to continue building on these efforts. Support also came through in writing and art to reach another public with passion for a cause (Winchip, 2007, p.13). Henry Davis Thoreau was a key figure in the mid 1800's, as a profound writer who drew the attention of countless minds towards the issues of the environment. Buckminster Fuller was also a visionary of this time, for his goal “to anticipate and solve humanities major problems through the highest technology by providing more and more life support for everybody, with less and less resources” (Winchip, 2007, p.14). He was able to see the direction that humanity was heading. There was a boom in environmental effort in the 1960's and 70's that came with the

knowledge of chemical dangers effecting both humanity and the environment. This sparked the beginning of a chemical battle between manufacturer and public.

Figure 2.3 Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic dome design, meant to go over Manhattan, NY. A futurist thinker, Fuller saw that solutions would be needed to sustain both human life and the environment in the future. Found at spreadartculture.com

Many of the efforts from then on have been dismissed, due to the radical scenes experienced during the revolt of the Vietnam War. Today however, scientists, politicians and the public all over the world acknowledge environmental issues as a common-sense-concern that will eventually threaten humanity's wellbeing on a global scale. Many educational institutes, news forums, free papers, magazines, and others have been created to continue the spread of this important knowledge, which is now being implemented in many societies around the world. Communal Living in History. This surge is environmental support and rejection for social norms in the mid-late century brought about many counter cultures. They were formed with a life purpose in mind, and often attracted people who were united by that one common goal. As Robin Guenther says in Sustainable Healthcare Architecture (2008), being in a natural setting can actually promote a social lifestyle and encourage group connections (p. 85). Naturalistic living was often part of this goal and fit in directly with a communal lifestyle. Communal living can be traced back to the beginning of human kind, when we were animals, and lived in clan-like formations. Also called “eco-villages” and “intentional communities”, these names delineate the idea that the people involved have a clear intent in their lives together,

12 Communal Living and Holistic Wellness in a Sustainable Environment

with conscious attention invested in the environment, and with a value of the importance of the collective. With this commonality comes comfort and trust amongst the inhabitants of the space, and thus the belief that as a whole, they may function as one for the greater good, often adopting the beliefs of the group and leaving their known lifestyle behind. A study done in Vancouver, Canada in 1996 studied relationships between household members and trends in housing history, results showed that “...physical environments and psychological events are seen as being inseparable, mutually defining, and a single unit of analysis. The home may be a source of selfidentity, to relating to others, of maintaining privacy and refuge, of providing continuity and stability, or establishing heritage, and so on (Browne, 1997, p.9). Interior design has a direct correlation to the function and success of an intentionally communal household. As the cradle to cradle manifesto illustrated, we should be living in a closed loop system, and therefore every detail of design should be accounted for as a meaningful element that will affect the lives of the building inhabitants. Nature should be an integral part to any space to create a connection between the built and natural environments and can encourage health of the mind, body, and spirit. Design is a fundamental aspect to the holistic well-being of the inhabitants as well as quality of life and experience.

Survey Research Several methods were used to gather information from the population. This survey produced results from a random sample online of 53 US citizens in the topics of health, learning, and living practices. The following is an analysis of those results. This facility will incorporate a strong presence of nature with the comfort of the indoors. To determine the most effective elements of design to facilitate relaxation in this environment, online survey participants were asked “On a nice day of weather, when do you feel most relaxed?”. The largest majority responded to being outdoors near a body of water, while the second largest majority responded to being outdoors observing nature. It is clear that a presence of natural elements will enhance a relaxing atmosphere. When participants were asked about the most effective method of relaxation used indoors, the results pointed towards a design focus to facilitate atmosphere more than a design element. In alternative responses offered, participants indicated that they desire an environment away from the everyday, for example, “In the woods away from people” or “laying in my bed next to my open window”. There is a need for a serene mental state, mostly encouraged by nature.

When Do You Feel Most Relaxed Indoors? When you have a view outside When there is low lighting and ambiance When the colors are cool blues and greens When the colors are warm reds and oranges When you are listening to music

Concerning communal living and learning, an overwhelming majority of 72% responded that when living with 15 people whom they did not know personally but whom had similar interests as they did, they would prefer to have private sleeping and bathing quarters with shared social and cooking areas. This information is relevant to space planning and privacy considerations. About half of participants stated that they feel most comfortable of accepting new ideas when they are learning and thinking with people they know well. These results signify that this random sample feels most at ease when they have their own private space when they need it and would probably visit this facility with at least one friend or close relation.

If You Were to Move Into a House With 15 People Whom You Did Not Know, But Whom Share Similar Interest With you, Would You Prefer... Other (please specify) to have private sleeping quarters in a separate building or zone from the social and cooking spaces to have the space sectioned into separate, individualized apartment style living to have private sleeping and bathing quarters with social and cooking spaces shared to keep the entire space open and shared with housemates 0.00% 10.00% 20.00% 30.00% 40.00% 50.00% 60.00% 70.00% 80.00%

Responses show the most effective method by which participants feel optimally healthy requires integration between food, nature and physical activity, with some responses also showing a need for social interaction to be healthy. These results tell me that a combination of methods will achieve total health of the body, mind, and spirit. All of these activities can be held

in social spaces, bringing in a sense of community and open air to holistic health. Participants were also asked about the most important result of sustainable building. The majority of responses showed that participants want a continual connection with nature; 76% responded “to encourage respect and preservation of the Earth”, 74% responded “Integration of nature into the indoors with plants, materials, views and fresh air”. Responses also showed a responsibility for the natural environment through alternative and reduced energy use and waste, as well as improvements in interior building wellness. Summary of Online Survey Results. These results prompt the design to have multiple types of housing for visiting groups of different sizes and to use creative design techniques to create an open environment that also feels secure and somewhat private for guests. Design must facilitate programs which incorporate nature into healing methods for the mind, body and spirit. Interior design will be used to create a natural and healthy atmosphere using plants and water, materials, views, fresh air, lighting, music, and community.

Observational Research The Hostel in the Forest is a circulating communal hostel where employees live, work and learn. Many workers are work-exchange participants, as the hostel always needs different people with different skills to keep it running up to date. Steady employees may only stay for a few months, and even the hostel manager is elected on a term basis. The Hostel in the Forest is a great example of an environment that brings wholeness of the mind, body, and soul through a community connection. The mission statement reads: The world would be a much healthier and better place if all its inhabitants advocated sustainability instead of unlimited growth. Rather than trying to control nature and use it as a resource for development, we should revere it, respect it, and work with it. The Hostel in the Forest is taking steps to manifest this vision. We see that nature’s creatures, including humans, animals, birds and insects share the same land in a unique manner. Inspired by the creativity found in the natural environment, we have transformed our ideas into actions by having an organic vegetable garden used in our dinners each night, recycling our wastes, having a cutting-edge gray-water system, watering plants with a solar powered irrigation system, and using a worm box that composts our table scraps into fertilizer for the garden. Hostel members sleep in tree houses, hike the T-trails through the 133 acre forest, swim and paddle canoes in the lake, take part in the healing process of walking our labyrinth, participate in the sweat lodges held on the nights of the full moon, eat a healthy vegetarian or vegan meal each night, and attend the many educational retreats and lectures designed to teach us how to move toward a wholesome and more sustainable future. We invite you to visit us and be a part of our work in progress; even participate in helping us with our projects, if you so desire.

Dr. Melinda Leeson (personal communication, February 29, 2012). A licensed practitioner of Chinese, homeopathic and herbal medicines, Dr. Leeson runs her own health practice in Sarasota, Fl with intent to heal as many people as she can. She began acknowledging the power of alternative medicine through a chiropractor and now stands holistically healthy, not having been out or work for a sick Figure 2.18 Portrait of Dr. Melina Leeson as seen on her website

day since 1987. Her clinic, Nature’s Own Wellness, began

in 2000 with the intent “to use medicine the way nature intended to restore whole-body health.” An interview provided insight on Dr. Leeson’s thoughts about health, education, government and architecture. On her website, Dr. Leeson claims she is uniquely qualified to Sarasota. She says so because of the unique demographics of the area. There are several demographic factors that Dr. Leeson has observed through the years that determine a client’s success in a holistic program. Sarasota is composed of many people who have relocated from another place, and who have likely lived a life of education, work and wealth. Dr. Leeson says that with education, comes a better understanding and acceptance of holistic healing as an alternative medicine. Many people who travel here have achieved a type of liberal arts education, where she finds they have an acute ability to solve problem. Citizens who were born and raised in Sarasota, generally have acquired a lower level of education, like many other place in the US and have been taught to “trust the doctor, whatever the doctor says” quoted Melinda. Without a wider world experience, it is more

22 Communal Living and Holistic Wellness in a Sustainable Environment

difficult for the human mind to accept foreign ways of thought. Melinda restricts her schedule to one patient per hour, specifically to allow enough time to teach the client how and why they are sick. There is a much greater deal of education needed in a healing process which is not so mainstream and not readily taught to the public. She is sure to take change step by step with the patient and ensure their understanding throughout the process. Patients are also highly insurancedriven when seeking treatment; this can be a problem since holistic medicine is often not recognized as insurance-worthy treatment. She finds that often, a mother or father with a family will return very seldom for follow-up treatment, as their funds are dedicated to family needs. Big executives are often short-term patients because they do not value the time that holistic treatment requires, while small business owners are on their knees for its power and will return just for check-ups. Though financial stature is often the deciding factor for a patient to undergo holistic care, a client’s education is the most important factor in determining their willingness to accept alternative treatment concepts. When asked about her thoughts of the effects of a patients living environment on their health, Dr. Leeson pointed directly to chemicals. A healthy environment is a chemical free environment. She mentioned things like carbon monoxide from garage fumes, outdoor pesticides, fiberglass insulation, mold, and other toxic building materials. Most of her observations pointed to the health of the Indoor Air Quality. In Florida, many people remain in a sealed interior environment that is air conditioned, making it extremely important to pay attention to the cleanliness of the ventilation system, and the chemicals that may be breaking off of materials and entering the body through the air. Dr. Leeson was by no means an expert in green building, but when the term was mentioned, she said “Definitely. She recommends plants inside because they help clean the air, and that a natural influence is a positive influence indoors.

23 Communal Living and Holistic Wellness in a Sustainable Environment

In the opinion of Doctor Leeson, curiosity is without a doubt the most important way to rejuvenate the mind, body, and soul every day. The world is an infinite playground that many people feel they must grow out of when they reach a certain point in their lives, but this is not the case. If we can convince people to acquire “a Sherlock Holmes mentality’ as Dr. Leeson puts it, we can achieve happiness, self-realization and to continue learning forever.

County Overview. Environmentally, Sarasota is rich with wetlands and water-dependent wildlife. The flat land allows for long views across open spaces not occupied by buildings, and easy cultivation of land for food and livestock. Climate is categorized as subtropical averaging in the 40s in the winter and the 90's in the summer with high humidity most of the year. As a shoreline based society there is strong threat of hurricane and flooding, though most storms do not greatly affect the area. The general population is almost split as elderly retirees and citizens living below the poverty line. Middle class is scarce, and a student population is seasonal in the area. The working population is generally corporate, with other jobs to support the tourist market; including restaurant, hospitality, bars, and retail. Sarasota community is very pleasant and embodies the leisure of a beach life. The young population of Sarasota is interested in an alternative lifestyle concerning green living, local food and good quality beer.

The music and arts scene of Sarasota is extremely strong with many local musicians, artists and venues to support the passion for the talent. John Ringling is a prominent figure of the town, having funded many of the projects that build its foundation; for instance the Ringling Museum and Ringling College. As the founder of the Ringling Bros Circus, there is a myriad of culture coming from the many performers who travelled with the circus. Architecture is also rich here, rooting from Paul Rudolf who began the Sarasota School of Architecture and led the way in a Bauhaus-Fusion style of architecture, unique and new to Sarasota.

Can Sustainable Design and Communal Living Practices Enhance Holistic Healing In a Live-In Wellness Retreat? The following precedent studies have been chosen based on a global perspective to discover amenities, systems, locations, and design details that may improve future projects of similar nature The Following is a list of relevant Precedent Studies PS1-Alfa Farm PS2- the Newbold House PS3- Sandhill Farm PS4- Earthaven eco Village PS5- Eco Yoga Park

46 Communal Living and Holistic Wellness in a Sustainable Environment  Precedent Study 1: Alpha Farm, Deadwood, Oregon

92819 Deadwood Creek Rd, United States Project Introduction Alpha Farm is an intentional community of people who have chosen to live and work together to share a more harmonious way of living. At our home in rural western Oregon, we live the largely self-reliant style of a close-knit expanded family; we average 15 to 20 people, including singles, couples and families, and have ranged in age from infants to elderly. (Alpha Farm, Intentional Communities, 2012 March 7). Established in 1972, the family supports itself with assorted freelance work, postal delivery service, farm-based business and a cafe/bookstore/gift shop called Alpha-Bit, their main source of economic support. Socially, they value community, non denominational spirituality and simplicity in life. They express themselves through Quaker meetings, yoga, drum circles, dancing, reading, discussion, and tradition. Week long workshops are held at the farm to teach consensus decision making, by a member who has gained international recognition for ideas. They seek to create an ideal community in harmony with people, nature and life as a whole. (Alpha Farm, Intentional Communities, 2012 March 7).

Site Description Alpha Farm sits 25 miles to the west coast, about 55 miles northwest of the nearest city, Eugene, OR. The 280 acre farm is located in the hills of dense forests; it consists of what they call the “new house” built in 1980 as a post office which they now use as a large five bedroom farmhouse, as well as many scattered cabins and trailer domains. They provide a private room for every family member with a shared living and dining area. The family welcomes long term residents and short term residents for any duration of time. They welcome to experimentation within living environments. (Alpha Farm, Intentional Communities, 2012 March 7). Refer to Figures 4.2-4.14 for a visual description of the site.

The Newbold House, Morayshire 111 St Leonards Rd, Forres, IV36 2RE, Scotland Project Introduction “Our mission is to develop, practice and teach skills for sustainable living, in harmony with ourselves, each other and the earth.” (Newbold House, 2012 March). The purpose of this community, retreat and workshop center is to teach about a sustainable and organic lifestyle. They understand that for the world to live in sustainable communities, they must make an example of it and first do it themselves. The want to educated visitors in sustainability so they may have the power to transform and heal life issues, physically or spiritually. The Newbold House works in conjunction with the Findhorn Foundation; they live by the following principles:

52 Communal Living and Holistic Wellness in a Sustainable Environment Â

deep inner listening and acting from that source of wisdom, co-creation with the intelligence of nature, service to the human and natural world. They provide to the community an assortment of homemade organic goods, and outsource minimal item from local, social and ecologically responsible businesses. They run a volunteer program which teaches people sills which they may use to improve their life. The community is holistically sustainable and thinks of details like composting, paper use, and transportation; it is the cradle to cradle concept they live by. They also bring this into education and offer any service in planning for low carbon travel to arrive to Newbold. They enjoy teaching the knowledge they have learned and aiding people in the journey to a life of understanding. (Newbold House, 2012 March).

Site Description Located on seven acres of land, the community resides in a large Victorian mansion surrounded by organic gardens, and is located almost next door to the main campus of the Findhorn Foundation and the Cluny Hill College. They offer to the public bed and breakfast style retreats, extended workshop driven stays and also rent out their facility for public or community events and workshops. The house was built in 1893 for Colonel Woodcock. It went through several family owners through the year and became a hotel in the 1960's, whereas several rooms were converted for different purposes. In 1979 the Findhorn foundation began renting rooms to expand their workshops, and then in 1983 they purchased the mansion. The house was paid off and operated through donations and guests only ten years later. They are currently renovating the house to become 100% carbon neutral through sun, wind and wood fuel energy sources. They plan to design for maximum efficiency and education. Throughout the grounds of Newbold, the presence of nature is overwhelming. Everywhere there is a natural feature that brings notice to a

moment. At the entrance of Newbold is a flora-lined driveway adjacent to the fully surrounding woods. The front lawn is the most open space, surrounded by trees leading to the back where the “Crystal Palace” conservatory lies. Around the house are many caravans and yurts where some of the community sleeps. From the back there is a walled view of the vegetable garden which is surrounded by quiet, relaxing nooks. The house itself is designed mostly in wood with Indian details, such as sculpted archways, from the life of the original owner. Figure 4.23 The Crystal palace conservatory is built in a style similar to Paul Rudolf, using white, glass and daylight to create a tropical, modern feel. It was actually designed by MacKenzie and Moncur.

Figure 4.25 the art room is another function space in the house, it is often used for meditation. Suspected to reside on top of a ley line, buried architecture was found here when the foundations were laid.

56 Communal Living and Holistic Wellness in a Sustainable Environment  Figure 4.26 most of the guest rooms are branched from a landing on the second floor, adjacent to a grand wooden staircase. Many have been converted from dressing rooms when the house became a hotel, however all have views and adequate space.

Figure 4.27 the library and sanctuary are located in the attic, where quiet comfort is cherished. A small library also is found here and is open for borrowing.

Figure 4.28 two treatment rooms are located near the main courtyard and are rentable for massage, counseling, therapies, and anything else. The rooms are said to have “the perfect atmosphere for healing.

Sandhill Farm, Missouri Northeast region, 35 miles NE of Kirksville, United States Project Summary “We have a simple and healthy lifestyle; creativity, ecological sustainability, nonviolence, personal freedom, honest communication, consensus decision-making and emotional support are core values. (Webmaster, 2012 March). Since 1972, Sandhill has been farming organically, providing their own food in hopes to achieve self-sufficiency. Their lands consist of large gardens, orchards, woods, hayfields, bee yards, crop land and pastures. They raise chickens and turkeys, and also hunt deer. They sell many crops, including sorghum syrup, honey, garlic, mustard and horseradish. During the growing season they welcome an influx of visitors to help them harvest the sorghum, which has become their largest income source on the farm as well as a tradition. Members hold a variety of jobs from activist, to office manager, to consultants. They all strive for lives of joy and positivity and follow that path through interaction with each other and their larger surrounding community. They enjoy a spring fed pond nearby both in the summers and winters, and are always conscious of a balance of work and play. They embrace machinery and computers and get most of their power through grid electricity and oil. They garden by hand, use composting toilets, biodynamic farming, permaculture, and holistic healing. We envision Sandhill Farm as a stable, progressive, fluid and vibrant community thriving in abundance. We prioritize building and maintaining the health of our members, systems and facilities. We hope to integrate more alternative energy, natural building, and empowered health care and self sufficiency in our lives. Sandhill Farm, in cooperation with our friends and neighbors, will continue to expand and network a culture of sustainable living in northeastern Missouri. (Webmaster, 2012 March).

58 Communal Living and Holistic Wellness in a Sustainable Environment  Figure 4.30 An aerial view of the site location show adjacencies to the local town and amenities while having access to natural, rural lands as well. Outside of the development, the land remains void of civilization. .

Site Description Sandhill farm resides on 135 acres in northeastern Missouri. Inside of Scotland county there is a population of only 5,000, lending most of the land to cows, soybeans and corn. Their closer neighbors are only a couple of miles away at fellow eco-villages, as well as the town of Rutledge where general amenities can be found. The community will sometime travel several hours to the larger cities, Columbia, and Quincy, Illinois, for recycling, shopping, and some entertainment. The areas they reside in is generally rural and experiences Midwest seasonal weather. Architecturally, they have an earth sheltered building and an earth bag greenhouse where they use solar energy for their food drying and heating. There are two barns on the land used for lumber and machine storage, and well as sorghum pressing. (Webmaster, 2012 March). Refer to Figures 4.31-4.40 for a visual description of the site. Earthaven Eco Village, Black Mountain, North Carolina 5 Consensus Circle, United States Project Summary Founded in 1994, Earthaven has dedicated themselves to caring for people and the Earth by learning, educating and living in a sustainable and holistic community. Imagine it’s summer at Earthaven, an aspiring eco village settlement nestled in the forested slopes of the Southern Appalachians. Along with murmuring streams and birdsong, you hear the sounds of human activity, of people building their common future together, of children at play‌ (Diana Leafe et al, (2012 March). The community at Earthaven practices their own sustainable forestry using mostly naturally felled trees, responsible agriculture and bioregional culture. They also hire each other for jobs whenever possible to avoid banks and keep the earnings in the community. They currently house about 60 members and intend to reach 150 in the foreseeable future. They make their living through carpentry, tool rental, solar system installations, wooden crafts, and various types of consultation and holistic healing. Residents are free to choose to be omnivore, vegetarian or vegan, depending on their own preferences. Their goals include the following: To promote and ensure the long-term structural integrity of the community; To catalyze local and global change through learning, teaching, and networking; To shift from wasteful to regenerative use of resources; To use and develop ecologically sound technologies for water, waste, energy, construction, and other essential systems; To develop and support a thriving local economy; To grow, raise, and trade our own food, medicines, and forestry products in an environmentally responsible, bioregional network; To practice fair, participatory, and effective self-governance; To encourage an

atmosphere in which diverse spiritual practices, conscious connection to all beings, and progressive social action can thrive; To nurture personal growth, interpersonal understanding, and mutual trust, as the foundation for a deeply connected human community; To practice healthy, holistic lifestyles that balance self-care with care for others; To create a culture of celebration, beauty, and pleasure; To use capital and labor resources to provide common infrastructure and meet our collective needs. (Diana Leafe et al, (2012 March). They follow these goals in order to create a village which will guide and educate a sustainable human future.

64 Communal Living and Holistic Wellness in a Sustainable Environment Â

Site Description Earthaven resides on 320 acres, 40 miles southeast of the city of Asheville. In the mountains, they live with abundant water and biodiversity at 2000-2600 feet elevations. Thus far in their development, they have formed roads, ponds, bridges, campgrounds, off grid energy systems, a council Hall, and many small residence dwellings; in 2009 they had a total of 35 buildings in 14 neighborhoods. The village has set aside specific wilderness areas to preserve the plentiful and diverse wilderness of their surroundings, and have gone to great length to educate and act in the preservation of their clean water supply. They are developing a permaculture site plan that includes neighborhoods and business buildings as well. In this plan, they set aside the flatter plains for agriculture to retain water in the land, and thus keeping building dry on the slopes. They use roof water cache systems and replenish the land by layer biomass. The community buildings they currently have are passive solar, and individual homes are built of natural materials with living roofs and thermal insulated with mud, straw, a wood chip clay mixture, or recycled cotton or cellulose. The buildings on site are eclectic and ecologically influenced, several of which are built of straw bale, adobe, cob, and recycled fruit juice pallets. Reuse is prominent and brings creativity to many aspects of their living. They use 100% off-grid electricity from hydro, micro hydro, solar and micro solar systems. They do not require much energy otherwise with the use of passive heating and cooling, and self-sustainability of other systems. (Diana Leafe et al, (2012 March). Eco Yoga Park, Bueno Aires, Argentina General Rodriguez, Buenos Aires 2748 , Brazil Project summary Eco Yoga Park describes itself as “a unique rural eco-village and eco hostel offers man visits for workshops mostly including yoga, meditation, music therapy, oriental philosophy, as well as volunteer work experience; they recommend at least a week stay to get the full experience of sustainable life. They have designed the program to provide experiential eco living. They offer sustainable activities for education, and hope to awaken people to their inner harmonies through daily yoga and meditation. They want to teach about sustainable building construction and have become an example through their own construction on site. The workshops are offered as a day retreats, weekly stays, and so on. They do not put limits on volunteering stays and offer that after two months of volunteering a guest is welcome to become a permanent resident or staff member. Volunteering and guest stays include room, board and food for every visitor. They have made the park very accommodating and easy to get to with many amenities addressed. They serve only lacto- vegetarian/vegan food, which is produced almost entirely from their organic gardens, and served at certain times inside schedules that a visitor is expected to follow during their stay (mostly for short time visitors and retreats). Eco Yoga Park is a member of and International Eco Village Network Association and provides volunteers with and International Validity Certificate. (Eco Yoga Park, 2012)

Summary and Conclusion After reviewing all five precedent studies, Alpha Farm, The Newbold House, Sandhill farm, Earthaven, and Eco Yoga Park, information pertaining to spacial needs, desired amenities, sustainability and cultural activity will influence the design. Flexibility is key and helps foster future development, encourage sustainability through reuse, and allow for change. Educational environments are needed with strong connection to the outdoors, as most of the learning happens with influence and respect for the environment. A certain level of privacy is needed while still holding a connection to the community for both residents and guests. Length of stay should be flexible, as well as food options and availability in order to attract a more diverse group of guests. Holistic living education often goes hand in hand with food, exercise (spiritual and physical) and an appreciation for nature. Design and sustainable building methods should enhance these activities to achieve a holistic understanding of this way of life.

Compostable toilets are desired, the toilets installed will be retrofitted for grey water in lieu of replacement. Passive heating a cooling is harnessed to reduce energy use. The site has a goal of zero foot print. This project aims to program and facilitate wellness of the mind, body, and soul through education, self-realization, and community. Programs encourage group connection but also provide time for private selfdiscovery. Gardening, yoga, meditation, art, nature, food, and other activities will bring guests into the immediate culture of the retreat by making them part of the process of everyday life. A sustainable lifestyle will be taught through active time spent at the retreat; a direct participatory approach. Variety is an integral principle to the design because every guest may need a different path to heal; different activities and spaces will help guests and staff find self knowledge and a sustainable way of life. With a positive experience at the retreat, it is the hope that guests will bring the knowledge with them and spread it. In this way the retreat will work to educate communities around the world through the thread of guests.

Block plan shows approximate spacial needs for program requirements while taking into account the existing architecture. The block plan is shown with circulation allowances to deliver an accurate reading of the allowed space. This block plan reveals that the chosen site exceeds the spacial needs of the requirement and thus the client and designer may go back to the program and decide where more space should be allowed and if other amenities are desired. Outdoor spaces also not have to option to be designed for an interior environment, such as the Organic Garden.

Communal Living and Holistic Wellness in a Sustainable Environment 100

Summary and Conclusion The program was completed thoroughly to satisfy the client after research as completed. Precedent studies informed the need for rentable spaces and flexibility, since many facilities like this one are non-profit and function as a community which needs income. Research also informed that many spaces are used for multiple things and should all have influence of nature either through architecture, fenestration or interior design. A chemical free environment is the most effective method of creating a healthy interior, and it often carries with it sustainable principles which serve as educational practices in the use of the building. I found very few limitations in my research, discovering that most communities will build where they see fit and begin a learning community to fully function in society. These communities are not held back by challenges and serve the environment, contribute to the economy and flourish as successful and happy places to live or visit. Using a site where a green building is already in use minimizes the amount of retrofitting that will be needed and leave the system to only be enhanced or updated to achieve the maximum sustainable environment possible on site.
