HEALTHCARE

NORTH

The Concept is finding light in the darkness;

EXISTING PLAN

light is an oasis in deep space, symbolizing hope for the future when it can seem lost. Revolution of light and dark in a celestial fantasy will create a guiding harmony to support healing, wellness, and happiness. The Children’s Medical Center will be designed around the concept to bring hope to painful moments with family and staff support, natural elements, and cutting edge technology and systems. Color, value, and form will bring patients to imaginary lands where they can forget about their sicknesses. Movement in the design will encourage personal rhythm and interactive fun in an unfamiliar place.

Project Goals

* Create a fun and healing environment by designing for its specific group of users. * Consider the health, safety and welfare of the patients; ADA, HIPPA, OSHA, IBC codes. * Use green materials to increase IEQ and improve the well-being of the user. * Consider privacy, adjacencies, and easy access to supplies and patients for staff. * Introduce innovative healing techniqies using art, music, culture, nature, and pets. * Separating public and private areas with color coding and icons for way finding. * Design without time or trend, for the universal user.

HOSPITALITY

The concept for this wellness retreat is energy exchange throughout the universe. Energy is the invisible force that gives life to everything on Earth. It is constantly being shared, and is therefore constantly flowing. Society today has attempted to change the natural flow of the Earth, for example, by placing restrictions in waterways and through overconsumption of resources from the Earth. Balance is a principle of the Earth and is integral to the design of MUNE retreat + community. The elements of variety, harmony, unity and rhythm will help to support the principle of natural balance. This wellness retreat will teach the mind, body and spirit how to reopen the energetic flow inside, and thus heal itself. Sustainable design is integral to this project, both in design and concept, because it also allows the flow between civilization and nature to reconnect.

Client Profile The client, Brent Hickey, has a background in graphic design with a passion for architecture. He is learning through mentors until he can return to school and get a degree to practice his passion. He has employed my design services to create a facility that he thinks will educate people about the benefits of sustainability. In addition to serving as a cleansing getaway, this facility can serve as a gathering place for community members. Ultimately, this facility will help visitors to achieve a more open mind, a happier and healthier lifestyle, and an educated respect for natural systems and resources.

Perspective Fire Patio

Sustainability Summary In the daily activities of residents and visitors, the necessities of food, water, activity, and rest will be conscious experiences that are enhanced through sustainable design. Alternative energy sources, rainwater collection, and edible organic gardens will support these daily functions and educate the local community about sustainable living in the process. Passive design techniques will bring in natural light and breezes to improve indoor environmental quality. Technology such as low flow faucets, composting toilets, and solar water heating will be used to further minimize energy and water use.

Sustainable education will also take the form of physical and mental awareness of the self. Yoga and meditation classes will help the community to realize holistic health and the connection of the body to the spirit. This connection is important in regaining a relationship with the natural environment, and improving health.

Mune retreat is built to support a holistically sustainable life style. Interior design will functionally support the projects core values of education, action, and community. The boundary between indoor and outdoor spaces will be challenged throughout the design with the use of design principles and elements, to achieve a strong energetic connection and appreciation for nature.

CORPORATE The Concept is Connectivity as Seen in Circuitry.

Individual electric circuits are wired together to collectively perform a task. A continuous current runs throughout the system, creating a powerful network, much like the Evernote office.Evernote's playful and innovative personality will be prominent throughout the open floor plan to enhance creativity and the exchange of ideas. Space, light, views, color, and a variety of working spaces will be a driving force in our design, as these elements have the power to inspire new ideas and enhance the life of the work environment. HOSPITALITY The Concept is the Ringling Brothers Circus.

Hostel guests typically expect an economical stay packed tight with culture, to make the most of the short time they experience in one place. The Circus carries a strong heritage of Sarasota in the twenties, which will submerge guests in the fun of a circus lifestyle. Resident and work-exchange employees will welcome guests into a comfortable home environment where ladies, and gentlemen, and children of all ages can engage in the history of Sarasota, just as it was when the circus first began. The different functioning spaces of the Hostel will draw an aura from the many facets of circus life; from the Ticket Booth Reception, to the Performers’ Quarters Guest Rooms, all the way to the Center Ring Bar. Contrast of color and form reflects the diversity of circus atmosphere

MIXED USE

The Concept is the Generational Evolution of the Pueblo Dwelling. This people began their lives in caves at the base of the surrounding cliffs and then moved above land to adobe multistory complexes made out of baked clay bricks, which still stand after dozens of generations. The Wellness Center is inspired by the structure of their traditional homes over the centuries in combination with today’s technology, building materials, and variety of skills. They have kept a harmonious relationship with the earth strong using variety and repetition of shape to fit the natural landscape, yet maintaining unity. They derive relative size, texture, and color to compliment the Rio Grande and contrast to draw attention to architectural openings. This relationship that they have fostered throughout history will connect the community with past and future generations

EDUCATION Fresh Minds

When students enter a studio at the start of a semester, they feel rejuvenated from a long vacation, returning with a sharp, rested attitude. However as the semester progresses, strong and stressful emotions can make long hours in the studio a turbulent environment. The concept of a student’s fresh mind will drive the design of this ideal learning space, to inspire and nurture students throughout their journey. A fresh, happy mind is exhilarated by a balance of work, play and variety. The principles of balance and variety in the design will sustain an atmosphere of artistic growth and perseverance when supported by the elements of color and shape. Materials selected to: -Improve interior air quality -Perform with durability -Support technological needs -Reduce glare and eye strain -Use color theory to learn

LIGHTING DESIGN

PHASE This project was developed as a solution to the inadequate lighting found near the ticketing counter in an aiport. Phase is designed to reduce strain on employees eyes, provide light for passengers on the other side of the counter, and to add some ambient light to the surrounding space. The fixture is designed to improve the experience of both the passenger and employee at the airport, while minimizing environmental impacts.

PHASE COMMUNICATION beams ambient light around

the counter space to clarify facial communication between traveler and employee. Light radiates to the counter top from an angled source, improving employee efficiency by eliminating glare and clarifying vision.

PHASE SUSTAINABILITY economically and ecologically

sustainable by using OLED light panels to conserve energy. Individually replacable parts provide for quick maintenance and partial replacements when needed.

PHASE SIGHT illuminates the space without visual disruption. Designed with an open center, visual communication and awareness are unobstructed. Security is therefore enhanced with a clear view of the ticketing space from the counter.

RETAIL The Concept for the Sephora Pop-Up Store is the Sapphic Stanza. The name Sephora is derived from the Greek god Sappho and the biblical figure Zipporah. Sappho was known best for her lyrical romantic poetry, even developing a signature rhythm called the Sapphic stanza. A mix of long, short and free syllables, the meter creates a steady rhythm with a stroke of unpredictability. The design will achieve contrast through the elements of color and texture while balance and repetition of shape will provide the steady beat. The movement of the poetic meter will be animated with a pressure sensitive lighting design to transform the customer into Sappho's free syllable. The Sephora pop-up Store can be moved from venue to venue with a simple set-up and deconstruction for Sephora's promotional events and exposure.
