Centre and Museum of Architecture in the Quarter between Birstono Str., Puodziu Str., Druskininku Str. and Karaliaus Mindaugo Ave. The object is in the territory of Kaunas Old Town. Design of quarters of such type and urban structures in general, and development in historical parts of towns are pressing issues in Lithuania nowadays. Their specificity is formed by such characteristic features as: type and form of use of territory, special organisation and visual relationship to the environment, vegetation, elements of technical infrastructure, including small objects and structural details (pavement, lighting fixtures, etc.). Integration of cultural facilities in the urban fabric of such type has to be especially sensitive, taking into account the established historical environment, including individual spaces, construction works, extensions and reconstructions of historical buildings and locations. However, the new approach to urban development and integration of new buildings, which are visually important to the town, into the established environment, must not be ignored. The work is aimed at adapting the territory of the between Birstono Str., Puodziu Str., Druskininku Str. and Karaliaus Mindaugo Ave. for a modern Centre and Museum of Architecture, planning a link with Nemunas embankment. The quarter is at the intersection of important transit streets of Kaunas and falls in

the protected territory of Kaunas Old town, which is under the Old Town protection regulations. This territory has the potential for public cultual development. Your task is to design an important block of buildings of a cultural centre of the town, which would be sensitive for local conditions and structure of the urban fabric. An important urban solution is the link between the quarter and the embankment of Nemunas, the main river of Kaunas. Currently, there are underground pedestrian crossings installed under Birstono Str. and Karaliaus Mindaugo Ave. The programme for executing this project is free, You can develop its scenario and scope for urban structure development. Custom options should be suggested when designing objects and planning the quarter, as well as its relation to the environment. Joint solutions with the topic “Overhead Road with Commercial Premises in Birstono Str. (Section between Gertrudos Str. and Karaliaus Mindaugo Ave.) are possible. http://kafe2016.lt/en/

Plan

First attempt of inserting the elements and ideas into a plan: [Combination of three proposals in public area] Extending platforms for BBQ activities (eating, resting) Electronic library

Eating & resting spaces

Trial Section:

Experimenting in parallel with models and drawings, we also attempt a section showing how the pipes transfer the fog created from the heat of the river, sounds and echoes so they can be exhibited as rituals in the museums. Spaces-Cannopies (covered semi-open spaces)

Section of the BBQ area on the river: Docks on the river allow for a fishing experience where you can also cook whatever you have caught instantly on a BBQ placed on each dock. The smoke from the BBQ is transfered from a pipe system where it captures the smell and the heat and sends it in to the museum.

Moment Experimental two point perspective drawing showing how these geometries work with slabs, mechanisms, pipe system.

Plan

As we've been designing mainly a public space, the museum came in as an idea. This plan represents a very first brainstorming that has been done by the team, trying to find which space is for what, and how various elements can be included as infrastructures etc.

Museum Interior Moment 1:20

Museum Interior Moment 1:20 In this space various voids and volumes can be found, acting as exhibition spaces where the activities in the space, can be viwed in different ways. Also, few ways of vertical circulation are included such as pulley mechanisms, elevators etc.

In this space You can find various voids and volumes acting as exhibition spaces where you can view in different ways the the activities in the space. Also you can find a few ways of vertical circulation for example a pulley mechanism elevator and a small amphitheater on the right of the moment on a lower level

Moment Interior atmosphere of the museum where we aim to design double glazing in order to collect and store fog inside, which visitors actually can't interract or get affected from the fog however visually they can experience and see the rythm of fog in the museum. On the ground floor you can find scaffolding where visitors can walk on it and they see the casting workshop/exhibit through the glazing. At the second floor we designed pipe structures which are for inserting water and the fishing activity inside the museum .

Inspired by Alzberg Architects Museum of the holocaust an underground space as the entrance of the museum leading to exhibition spaces.

Inspired from this case study we desided to make a playground for adults and children using the technique of one element as a ribbon.

A playground in two different variations, one for the youth and on for the adults. A child can experience a space in a more playful way, for example jumping, climbing, sliding. An Adult also can experience this space but in a more extreme way, for example with skateboarding and parkour.

Diagramatic sections showing depth with various levels, light sources ,voids and volumes where people can do different activities and experience different atmospheres.

First Site Model:

After a huge experimentation and brainstorming of drawings, conceptual models and ideas, we attempted a site model trying to combine all of them according to the activities and the needs of our program. Our main elements were the scaffolding, the boxes, and the dynamic forms. We also tried to use the existing buildings in our proposal.

KAFe2016 There’s the site! Named Kaunas and located in Lithuania. It is situated opposite a river and a main road. As I pass through the main road, I can see an old building connected to an amphitheater with a view of the river, in which you have the chance to go fishing due to the docks. There, you can also find more private spaces where your head reaches the surface of the river. A combination of scaffolding, extruded, sloped and folding surfaces, enclosed and semi-open ones, flows of activities, notions of water, wind, sound, fog, all together bring out a merged landscape including a public area starring a museum. The orientation of the site, prepares you and attracts you in getting into the combined environment. As you step in from the entrance, the passageway leads itself into the museum with vertical surfaces. Once you get into the museum you experience the openness, the “ways of living” exhibits, the notion of warmth, sound and different circulations. All of them connected with an inclined surface that hugs the three story building leading you to the three levels. An extruded hollow glazing volume acts as a central axis linking the three of them. On the first level there’s a central opening giving you the chance to view how the people underneath experience the circulation of the space. The last level constitutes the communal space of the museum relating in making it in that way part of the public space, where you can sit, relax, rest and enjoy a cup of coffee having the view of the playground, small water canals floating around, activities happening in the river occupied by the sunset. Inclined surfaces can also guide you into scaffolding structures which are forming different scales of spaces in between, providing opportunity to eat and feel some privacy. Last but not least, experiencing the underground seems also fascinating. When you enter the space you also have the option of going directly into the underground space where you can find openings leading you to a darker and more private environment. In that space you can see the flow of the fog through glazing and the experience of what is going on above through a pipe system that transfers the sound from all over the proposed area. The underground space also gives the opportunity for performances as the spectators

Development of the model and plan

After some more experimentation on the plan using the grid technique we decided to expand the museum cantilevering over a part of the playground to give more shading and more museum space . 1 - Museum (of experiences, rituals) 2 - Eating Spaces (supported with scaffolding and mechanisms) 3 - Playground 4 - Workshop Space 5 - Ampitheatre (gives the ability of views, both in museum and river) 6 - Bridge (fishing activities, leisure, walking, observing) 7 - Underground Space

Through the process of making the concrete slab we've inserted mettal rods resembling a reinforced concrete slab.

Some metal rods in the process of the curing have been removed and gave us a texture that resembles a scaffolding pattern.

Some spaces have more dense scaffolding working as a skin to the museum.

Final steps of the proposal

WORKSHOP SPACE-PLAYGROUND OBSERVATORY You can access the bridge either from the playground as the playground becomes a stair case or from the first floor of the museum. From the bridge parents can keep an eye on their children while enjoying the view. The workshops will be used for educational purposes where schools or any kind of students can arrange a session in the space. The workshops will mostly be craft making but the space could be a workshop for anything. There are outdoor spaces for the dirty work but also for just having a break with a nice view. The workshop space will be closed at night but you can still have access to the bridge.\ BRIDGE CONNECTING THE MUSEUM WITH THE RIVER

ZONING DIAGRAMS & PROGRAM

The bridge takes you to the river where you can fish or just enjoy the sunset. The bridge is accessible any time of day .

BBQ SPACES (BOXES) The boxes serve for bringing people together as you have the chance to go fishing with your friends and family and if you catch any fish you can bbq them in the boxes. The bbq is placed on the base of each box so the peole can sit on the ground while cooking which is not different than a campfire. The smoke from the bbq is then captured and transfered with a pipe system and exausted at the top or captured into bubbles to give heat. The boxes are available day and night and you dont necessarily need to bbq. You can just enjoy the night with a fire and friends.

UNDERGROUND SPACE A slope from the entrance of the museum can take you to the underground where you can find an amphitheatre for performances. Street performances could be held in the space or even small festivals. An experience with smoke through double glazing can also be found in the underground. The underground space is also accessible any time of day.

PLAYGROUND AREA

GLAZING

The playground is not only for children but for all ages. A series of slopes and surfaces transform the space into a sort of a maze playground. Water from the river travels through small oppenings on the ground giving a slight breeze and sound to the atmosphere. Children can experience the space in their own way but bigger children or adults can perform different kinds of sports such as skateboarding, parkour, bmx etc.

The middle glass holding all floors together is also a passageway for the smoke acting as a sort of chimney a continuing the smoke experience on the site.

The playground is accessible any time of day.

3 LEVELS OF THE MUSEUM The ground floor and the first floor can be used as exhibition spaces where vertical panels lead the way through the exhibits. formations similar to the playground also lead the way with the vertical panels and the scaffolding. The roof is only accessible from the boxes becoming a communal space for the people enjoying the bbq boxes. The groundfloor is only accessible in the morning and afternoon as the 1st floor is also accessible when there are performances.the roof on the other hand can be accessible all times.

AMPHITHEATRE - CAFE The amphitheatre is for any kind of performances and also the boxes makes the arangement of the stage much easier. Under the amphitheatre you can find a cafe that connects with the bridge leading to the river. The cafe can be accessible till night.
