Ready, Set, Show By Beth Martinec

If you had asked me last year at this time if I was going to ever show my horse again, my answer was firmly no. I assured all my friends that the only reason to put my horse into full training was just to take lessons on a horse that a., looked like he knew a thing or two and b., wasn’t going to try to launch me into orbit every time I rode him. I had no intention of taking my horse to a show. Flash forward to three months later though and I did exactly the opposite of all that. I took him to a show and I was hooked. The rest of my year went by in one carousel joyride of irresponsible spending. I went to a lot of shows. Yes, I may now have a problem, but I’m firmly in the denial phase, so let’s not ruin it for me. Let’s focus on the real problem which is that I was seriously underprepared for navigating the mindboggling requirements necessary to enter these shows. Even last night I spent two and a half hours signing up for the next show. And even now, I’m still not sure I have all the required numbers and forms filed….I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that they need to know my blood type and my astrological sign? Plus I probably have to pay a fee for that. Do I have to go through this every year? As I was researching for information to help write this article, I came across a document written on this exact topic – an easy step-by-step guide to entering recognized shows. I had struck gold I thought. Someone has done all the hard work I thought and I can read this and it will all be clear to me. Except that this “easy guide” is thirty-two pages of absolutely everything you could ever want to know and was too much for me to absorb. It seemed so overwhelming that I didn't even try to read it. So here's my best advice for all of you who are new to this too. Find someone who has a whole bunch of show experience and ask them to be your new best friend. Sit them Continued on page 3

down and have them check all your memberships and ask you all the important questions. Do you want to get your medals? Do you want to go to state and/or regional championships? Do you want to try to compete for a breed award? It’s also best to find this friend at the beginning of the show year and not mid-year where you have already spent half your year with all the wrong memberships and forms and now can’t qualify for anything. (Yes, that was me). Also (and this I only discovered last night) ADA has a very helpful list on their website that shows you what memberships you need. Go here -https://azdressage.org/become-member/ The USDF also has an “Entry Checklist” form that has a lot of useful info. Look for it on page 17 of this newsletter. And, for those of you that want to be an expert on everything you never knew you needed to know to entry a dressage show, you can read all 32 pages written by Leslie Raulin by following this link - http://www.frederickdressage.org/uploads/3/7/3/8/37380471/2019-03-07_how-to-enter-usefusdf-shows.pdf It’s really very good!

T

he ADA Schooling Show Committee would like to thank every owner, rider, trainer and volunteer who came out to support us at the ADA Schooling Show at Dale Creek Equestrian Center on Saturday, October 16. We had a bit of a panic when our two volunteers canceled the week of the show but we made it happen with first time show manager, Sandy Shoup, and amazing volunteers Rebecca Lindy, RheaAnn Redmond and Amy Burnett. Special thanks to Julie Swanson and Jen & Paul Tobie for offering their help in our time of need! The committee is working on a possible December schooling show in Scottsdale. Fingers crossed! Thank you, Michell Combs Last schooling show as ADA's 2nd Vice President

ARIZONA DRESSAGE ASSOCIATION HORSE NOMINATION FORM 2022 Arizona State Dressage Championships November 2022 – WestWorld of Scottsdale, AZ

Qualifying period for 2022 State Championships: October 1, 2021 through September 30, 2022

v $25 Nomination fee must be received before qualifying scores are earned. v Once the horse has been nominated it is not necessary to pay additional qualifying fees on entries. Qualifying refers to Regional Championship qualifying, not to State Championships. Scores are tracked for State Championships, once the horse has been nominated. v You must be a member of an Arizona GMO by August 31, 2022 to ride in the Arizona State Championship Show. Horse Name: Horse USDF Number Horse USEF Number Owner Name Owner Address Owner Email/Phone # Owner USDF number Owner USEF number The Arizona State Championships will be held at the Arizona Dressage Association (ADA) Fall Fiesta, November 2022 at WestWorld of Scottsdale, AZ. For scores to count toward qualification for the State Championships, a $25 nomination fee must be paid for each horse. This fee must be paid before any rides will count toward qualifying. Since only one horse/rider combination can compete at State Championships, the fee goes toward the horse. Multiple riders may qualify on the same horse if the nomination fee has been paid for that horse. If multiple riders qualify on the same horse, one rider only may compete in the State Championship classes and the concurrent Fall Festival show. See State Championship Rule 5. There are two ways to file your Nomination Form: 1. Send the nomination with a $25 check, payable to Arizona Dressage Association (ADA) to the address listed below. 2. Include the nomination and check, payable to ADA, with your show entry to any Recognized show in Arizona-ADA, Tucson Dressage Club (TDC) or any ADA/TDC Recognized shows. Check the 2022 Arizona Dressage Omnibus or ADA and TDC websites for complete State Championship rules. Updates will also be posted on these websites, if required: ADA, www.azdressage.org; TDC, www.tucsondressageclub.org.

Please make check payable to ADA and send to:

November Region 5 Message Well, it’s been another interesting year. Thankfully, horse shows, for the most part, have gone well and had great attendance. Clinics and educational opportunities have returned and we are all enjoying spending time with our horses. Covid still has a very strong presence in our lives sadly. The USDF convention and the awards presentations are just around the corner and it’s time to set some time aside in your busy schedules and join us on Zoom for some good information and unique socialization. The convention schedule has been posted online at www.usdf.org so that you can start to plan out the meetings and educational sessions you would lie to attend. We had really hoped to be back in person for Convention this year, but things just didn’t work out that way. 2022 will be the year and we’ll be in Lexington, Kentucky! We are hosting a Region 5 meeting prior to the USDF Convention on November 18th at 6pm. Here is the call information: Time: Nov 18, 2021 06:00 PM Mountain Time (US and Canada) Join Zoom Meeting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83882353284?pwd=RHkvZDFxeGYzcDZFUmtmS25MUVlkdz09 Meeting ID: 838 8235 3284 Passcode: 280120 All members of Region 5 are welcome to join us. This will be a bit more of a working meeting as our meeting during the USDF Convention will have some time set aside for USDF President Candidates to speak and other USDF business. A reminder that your Participating Member Delegates to the USDF Convention for 2021 are Joan Clay, Cecilia Cox, Sarah Lindsten, and Sarah Martin. Please contact them or myself if you have any concerns regarding items listed on the BOG agenda or anything you would like to have brought forward at the Regional meeting during the convention. There are some very important things that will be covered, so please let your delegates know how you feel. We’re hoping for some new and diverse bids for the 2023 championships. I’d love to hear from any interested parties as soon as possible so I can get you a list of the information we’re going to need for those bids. All Regional Championships still must be held by mid-October since the winners of all divisions will continue to feed into the Nationals Championships. That’s right folks! The Junior/Young Riders will also now be competing at the US Dressage Finals as of this year, currently held each November in Lexington, Kentucky. There were a few educational opportunities in our Region this year and we were able to host the USDF Jr/YR Clinic in October in Colorado. We had 8 lovely riders who participated in the clinic and traveled from all over Colorado and Utah to be there. More great things are being planned by our GMOs throughout the winter and into next year so please be sure to check them out and support your local groups with your attendance as participants and auditors so these educational opportunities can continue! Till next month! Heather Petersen Region 5 Director 6 | THE CENTERLINE | NOVEMBER 2021
