H
ave you ever wondered why so many slot machines have frog themes? Well, because frogs are a good luck symbol in many cultures all around the world! They signify wealth, prosperity, and abun-
dance.
For the ancient Romans, the frog was a mascot believed to bring affluence to the home, while for the ancient Egyptians and Greeks, the frog symbolized fertility and inspiration. In the Native American culture of the Southwest, the frog carries a piece of wood in its mouth because the Mojave people believe frogs brought fire to humans. The Native Americans, like most Asians and Western Europeans, also believe the frog represents the curative, or healing, powers of water. The frog actually embodies the spirit of the water and calls upon the rain to purify and cleanse. Most Asian cultures also believe the frog symbolizes large fortunes will come with hard work and a clever mind. There is an interesting Chinese legend that says the world rests on the back of a three-legged frog!

PLAYERS TALK Q: Hi! I really enjoy reading the magazine each month [especially Players Talk.] Well, here are three questions that I have been thinking about each time I sit at a slot. 1. If I get four wilds for 2,000 credits but four wilds and an Ace (or five Aces) for 1,500 credits, what amount of credits do I get? The original four wilds at 2,000 credits or five Aces at 1,500 credits or both? 2. Is it true that the manufacturers of slot machines set the frequency for very large progressive payouts or does it still depend on the Random Number Generator (RNG)? 3. I read somewhere that when the slots are not being used, that the computer chip inside the slot is going through thousands of combinations per second just waiting for someone to press the play button for the RNG to begin. Is this true? Thanks for your input on everyone's questions. I can't wait for the answers! Sharon Saltzman—Arizona A: Thanks for your positive feedback Sharon! We appreciate you and your loyalty. All three of your questions are great and we’ll answer them in order. 1. This question is most easily answered by looking at a slot machine’s help screen and pay table information. Each game must provide the exact rules for Wild symbols (what they substitute for, are they part of the pay table, etc.) somewhere in the help screen to avoid misleading players. Of course, each slot has different rules regarding Wild symbols. But what is a very common game rule is the following statement “Only highest win paid” which you’ll easily find in any slot machine’s help screen using pay lines to determine winning combinations. So, based on your scenario, when you land Wild, Wild, Wild, Wild, Ace on a pay line and four Wilds pay more than five Aces, you’ll win for the four Wilds, or 2,000 credits only. But, if five Aces pays more than four Wilds according to the pay table, you’ll win only for the five Aces! In all our time in the casino business, we can’t recall an instance where a game’s rules allow for two different wins to be paid on the same pay line. That doesn't mean it’s not out there, but we don’t think so. It always pays (pun intended) to read the help screen, even if it’s just a new version of your favorite game. 2. This question is a frequent misconception among slot players. And, we totally understand why it is a misconception! How can players not feel like large jackpots are set up by someone (the
06 Arizona Gaming Guide | November 2020 | azgamingguide.com
casino or the manufacturer) when they are rarely (some people think never) awarded? So, let’s break this down. Here in Arizona, and in many other gaming jurisdictions around the country, regulations require “The highest single advertised award on each gaming device shall occur statistically, at least once in every 50,000,000 games.” That’s a direct quote from page 35, Appendix A (Technical Standards) of the Arizona Tribal-State Gaming Compact overseen by the Arizona Department of Gaming. This means, on average, over a long period of play, a very large progressive jackpot must hit at least once in every 50 million spins. Slot machine game designers, some of who are members of our staff, then choose to design games where the outcome of a very large progressive jackpot has odds of once in every 29,450,421 spins, just as an example. Those odds are less than one in 50 million, so the game will satisfy almost every gaming jurisdiction’s regulations in the world. But, the very large progressive jackpot will only be awarded if the RNG selects the winning combination associated with it. And that is purely in the hands of the RNG, not the casino, not the regulators, not the manufacturer, not even you! Can the jackpot happen on the first spin once the game is ready for play? Yes, but obviously it’s unlikely! Can the jackpot happen on the 1,234,567th spin? Yes, but it’s just as likely to happen then (or unlikely!) as on any other spin. Rest assured, as of now, the RNG, which has its own set of regulations governing its operation, statistical randomness, and basic “fairness” for the players (and the casino by extension) is in charge of determining all outcomes on a slot machine. Nothing else. We’ll let you know if anything changes. 3. We’re hoping you’re just misstating what you read, in our magazine we’re assuming, but the basic principle you mention is correct. To clarify, while a slot machine is idle or between spins, the RNG is constantly creating new random numbers, tens of thousands per second or more. Once a player hits a button initiating a wager, the slot machine’s software asks the RNG for new random numbers which are then passed from the RNG to the software program. The spin completes, any wins are awarded based on the numbers provided and the process continues. The RNG is working constantly in the background between and during spins. All the slot’s software does, at the very instant a spin is initiated, is ask the RNG for numbers it is providing at that moment. Then the RNG goes back to work. Keep the questions coming! he casino floor is being enhanced with the rich, colorful graphics of IGT’s Wu Dragon. As part of the base game, wild golden comet symbols are scattered across the 4x5 reel matrix. If a wild symbol hits a top symbol that looks like a red and white frame, the wild expands to surround the frame. Players can also place a side bet to keep the top frames in place until any of them are hit by the fire wheel wild symbol. If a hit occurs, all the top frames turn to wilds allowing for spectacular wins. Wu Dragon also features a scatter trigger bonus to win 10, 20, or 50 free games and a progressive jackpot level that could be won at any time during game play. This game has a 100 credit cost to cover with real-time 3D effects like heat haze, motion blur, or ripple distortions along with rich graphics that are sure to keep players entertained. Mystery Link Lucky Lotus By IGT

ans of Wheel of Fortune games will be sure to enjoy the latest theme, Wheel of Fortune Mystery Link Lucky Lotus on IGT’s brand new PeakSlant49 with Wheel cabinet.
This game takes players on an exciting ride, including a lock and respin feature with multiple wheel spins, a free games bonus with stacked wilds, and an engaging art package with rich colors and symbols. In this 3x5 reel game, the mystery link feature is triggered when six or more colored pointers land on the screen with either a jackpot name on it or a color-coded question mark. Each of the five colors relates to a pointer on the five-pointer wheel. When the mystery link is triggered, the number of pointers awarded lights up on the wheel and the player is prompted to spin it. When it stops, the question marks fill in with money values from the corresponding wheel pointer colors. For added excitement, the player then begins their three respins, and each time a pointer symbol lands, the respins reset to three. If all 15 reel positions are filled in at the end of the respins, the digital wheel flips over to reveal a jackpot-only wheel where players are guaranteed to win one of the five jackpots. TABLE GAMES By Al Moe
PROBABILITY IS CONSTANT Examining The Real Truth At The Tables
H
ave you ever wondered how you could be such a great blackjack player and still lose regularly? Well, for most players, the best solution is to improve their play. For a few others, it might be to sit back and think about what might be going wrong! Arizona casinos offer very liberal rules, and a quality Basic Strategy player is at less than a 1% disadvantage. Players who know enough to let the dealer take the first chance of busting against a small up card and to split pairs and double down correctly play at about a 2% disadvantage to the house. Still, casinos hold (win) about 15% on their blackjack tables. Why that happens is tied to questions about losing and gaming probability that I get asked often. The answer, beyond improving your play, has to do with your hours of play, the amount you wager, and the ratio of your bet size to your bankroll. If you start the evening with $500 and play on a $25 minimum table, you’ve only got 20 units to play with. A couple of bad double downs and a hot dealer will wipe you out. Will your next session be better? Perhaps, but there’s no guarantee. The Gambler’s Fallacy is that when something hasn’t happened for a long time (like a winning session), it is more likely to occur in the future. Unfortunately, it’s not more likely to occur quickly. For blackjack, it takes thousands of hands before your 1% average loss per hand is steady. But don’t worry; you might win tomorrow! What The Computer Says Computer simulations show that a blackjack player is likely to see wide swings in their first few thousand hands. As the simulation passes about 12,000 hands, the average player is most likely to be within 200 units of where they started – but only if they don’t go broke first. That’s another reason the house does so well. They never go broke! So, again, keep your average bet size low enough that you have 100 units instead of 20. Ideally, that “unit” would be a bet size, not a chip size. Even for card counters with a 10-1 bet-spread, there’s still a 5% chance of going broke with a 2,000 unit bankroll! As long as you are playing a good solid game of blackjack un-
14 Arizona Gaming Guide | November 2020 | azgamingguide.com
affected by outside influences like sleep deprivation and playing scared, you’ll do fine. Eventually, your results will resemble more of a straight line on a graph instead of a series of wild peaks and valleys. To get to the earlier noted 12,000 blackjack hands (at 60 hands per hour), you’ll have to play about 200 hours. That won’t get you a sudden run of great cards; it will only confirm that where you are is where you’ll be as long as you keep playing at your current skill level. So let that inspire you to improve your game! Are Side Bets Sinister? No, side bets aren’t sinister. Just costly. A big part of the fun for many players is the dream of hitting the jackpot, whether at a slot machine or on a gaming table. Just keep in mind that the odds against hitting a big jackpot are high, and those side bet wagers will increase the house edge against you significantly. What have you learned over the course of playing thousands of hands of blackjack? We’d love to hear your stories and your experiences. BLACKJACK ETIQUETTE Be Nice...Do Unto Others As You Would Have Them Do Unto You
B
lackjack etiquette, by definition, is an unwritten code of common courtesies for blackjack players. Gamblers, as a general rule, are extremely superstitious. And, if there is a sudden change in their luck for the worse, any new element will get the blame. There are no mathematical statistics to back up any claims by players that a certain event will change the flow of cards from good to bad. However, if you want to avoid being blamed for the bad luck of others, follow these simple practices and you will always be a welcome addition to any blackjack game. Ask Permission When Entering A Game In Progress Ask the other players seated at the table if they mind if you join. This is the polite way to enter a game. That way if the cards turn for the worse the other players can only blame themselves. If players have been winning prior to your arrival, and you fail to ask permission, be ready for some nasty glares and evil looks if the cards turn bad. The other players may not say anything but, trust me, they are not thinking happy thoughts about you. If you sit down and the very first hand the dealer receives blackjack, I would hate to be you. With the addition of a new player mid-shoe, the other players will blame you if the flow of cards changes for the worse. Don't Split Tens Without Asking First There are very few things that you can do as a blackjack player that will draw such an adverse reaction from the other players at the table as splitting a pair of 10s. If you feel the need to do so, ask the other players if they mind. That way, if you get their consent and it does cause them to lose, at least they all won't join together and form a lynch mob on your behalf. Don't Be Rude If you have the desire to smoke at the table at least ask the other players if they mind. I was playing a few months ago with a delightful elderly gentleman who was wheelchair-bound and required oxygen. A new player was guilty of one of the rudest and most inconsiderate acts I have ever witnessed in some 30 years. He sat down beside the elderly gentleman and lit up a cigarette. It was obvious that the man required pure oxygen to sustain life and this idiot was just blowing smoke in his face. I thought the man was going to die right there. Use some common sense. Be kind to others. The Golden Rule. Please!

Tip The Dealer Blackjack dealers are paid a minimum hourly wage, so the majority of their income is from tips. If you have a winning session, take care of the dealer. They will be much more friendly the next time you see them. Playing Two Hands At Once If there is a spot open next to your seat and you decide to play two hands, it is always polite to ask the other players if they mind. Again, this is a good idea in case the dealer turns up a blackjack after you add the additional hand. If you play two hands, continue playing two until the end of the shoe. If you go back and forth between one and two you will be blamed for changing the cards if they turn ugly. If you adhere to these common sense courtesies when you play blackjack it will create a friendly atmosphere at your table and that always makes the game more enjoyable! Send us an email at Editor@AZGamingGuide.com with the word “Blackjack in the subject line if you have something to add about etiquette at the blackjack table. $ Writer TJ Jorgensen has been a professional Blackjack player for over 20 years. BETTING MAGIC—PART II How To Use The Built-In Functionality Of Electronic Table Games
I
n my previous article I introduced you to two of the various Magic Buttons that are provided to help you save time when making complex bets. In this article I am going to explore four additional Magic Buttons that are available on the electronic Craps machine. These buttons are: Across, Inside, Outside and Press. Across This button will make Place bets on every number in the box, i.e. the 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10. If a Point is established then a bet will not be placed on the Point number. This assumes that you already have a Pass line bet established. This would be true in the Shoot To Win e-Craps machine if you are the shooter. Inside This button will Place a bet on the 5, 6, 8 and 9, with the exception of the Point number if it is one of the Inside numbers. Outside This button will Place a bet on the 4, 5, 9 and 10, with the exception of the Point number if it is one of the Outside numbers. Press This button will double the bet on the number that won. None of the other numbers are doubled. This button will double Place, Buy and Hardways bets. It will not double Lay or Proposition bets. Putting It Together Craps, unlike Roulette, has multi-roll bets. That is, Place, Buy, Pass, Don’t Pass, Come, Don’t Come or Odds bets, do not automatically lose just because that number was not rolled by the dice. When they win, they may not be taken down. This is true of Place and Odds bets. For example, let’s assume you want to place a bet on every number in the box. You would normally do this after a Point is established. Let’s say a 6 is the point. You have a $1 Pass line bet which will win if another 6 is rolled. You make a double-Odds bet on the 6 by placing $2 behind the Pass line. You press the Across button, which places a $1 bet on the 4, 5, 8, 9 and 10. Your total bet is $8. The next roll is a 4. You win $1.80. You push the Press button to double the 4 bet from $1 to $2. Your total bet is now $9.
18 Arizona Gaming Guide | November 2020 | azgamingguide.com
The next roll is an 8. You win $1.16 Press the 8 to $2. Your total bet is now $10. The next roll is a 4. You now win $3.60. Your total winnings is now $6.56. You do not Press. The next roll is a 5. You win $1.40 putting your winnings at $7.96. You Press the 5 bringing your total bet to $11. The next roll is a 6. You win $2.20 increasing your total win to $10.16. The Place bets are now OFF but still in place, they cannot win or lose. You Press the Pass line bet to $2. The next roll is a 7, which wins $2, putting your winnings at $12.16. The next roll is a 6. The box bets are now ON. They can be impacted by the next roll. You’re feeling lucky. You have a $2 Pass line bet on the 6. You make a $4 odds bet. You now have $17 on the line. What will the next roll be? Summary In my opinion, Craps is one of the most exciting and rewarding casino games, live or electronic (my preference). The scenario I described above can happen. The Interblock Craps machine provides statistics that can help you decide when to bet Across, Inside or Outside depending on the average rolls per session. Caesars Entertainment To Acquire William Hill For £2.9 Billion Merges Largest Gaming Entertainment Company With World’s Leading Sports Betting Company
Caesars Entertainment, Inc. and William Hill PLC are pleased to announce that they have reached agreement on the terms of a recommended cash acquisition pursuant to which Caesars will acquire the entire issued and to be issued share capital of William Hill for approximately £2.9 billion. The historic acquisition would bring together Caesars as one of the largest gaming-entertainment companies in the U.S. and one of the world’s most diversified gaming entertainment provisions, and William Hill as one of the world’s leading betting and gambling companies. The acquisition is subject to anti-trust and regulatory approvals and completion is expected to take place in the second half of 2021. "The opportunity to combine our land based-casinos, sports betting and online gaming in the U.S. is a truly exciting prospect,” said Caesars Entertainment CEO Tom Reeg. “William Hill’s sports betting expertise will complement Caesars’ current offering, enabling the combined group to serve our customers in the fast-growing U.S. sports betting and online market. We look forward to working with William Hill to support future growth in the U.S. by providing our customers with a superior and comprehensive experience across all areas of gaming, sports betting, and entertainment.” “The William Hill Board believes this is the best option for William Hill at an attractive price for shareholders,” said Roger Devlin, Chairman of William Hill, commenting on the acquisition. “It recognizes the significant progress the William Hill Group has made over the last 18 months, as well as the risk and significant investment required to maximize the U.S. opportunity given intense competition in the U.S. and the potential for regulatory disruption in the U.K. and Europe.” “Under the revitalized senior leadership team, William Hill has been delivering on its strategy and potential. William Hill is one of the world’s leading betting and gambling companies, with a long and proud heritage. It is one of the most recognized brands globally. Over recent years, it has transformed from a business once heavily reliant on U.K. retail into a company that is truly diversified by geography and channel, providing a stable standalone platform for future growth.” “For now, it is very much business as usual. Employees will be kept fully informed through this process. In terms of our U.K.

LUCKY PLAYER HITS FOR $1.2 MILLION Buffalo Diamond Slot Machine By Aristocrat Pays Big
O
ne very lucky guest at Desert Diamond Casino West Valley took home a fortune after hitting a $1,249,154.52 progressive jackpot on Wednesday, September 30, 2020. The lucky guest, John Batina, was visiting the casino with his fiancée when he hit the million-dollar jackpot while playing a Buffalo Diamond machine made by Aristocrat. Buffalo Diamond was released as the 10th Anniversary Edition of the game. And on this slot, players get the gifts they really want, more Buffalo free games! The free games bonus has lots of spins, with 2X, 3X and 4X multipliers. The Buffalo Diamond base game offers a unique 4 by 5 by 6 by 5 by 4 reel set featuring 2,400 ways to win and offers Aristocrat’s first persistent free games feature. As a player plays the base game, they may randomly collect purple, blue or green diamonds on the 5th reel, which progresses the free games pool. Buffalo Diamond also offers a unique wheel feature where the player receives 4X all pays free games, 3X all pays free games, 2X all pays free games, regular free games and grand progressive (which starts at $500,000.00 and is only available at max bet). As in the classic Buffalo game, during the free games bonus, two or more scattered coins will trigger additional free games, and free games sunsets are wild and reveal 2X or 3X win multipliers with corresponding wins. Treena Parvello, Director of Public Relations and Communications for the Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise, said, “We always love to see our guests win big, so it’s a thrill to welcome our newest millionaire to Jackpot Valley! We’re committed to providing a safe and fun place for everyone to play, and we can’t wait to see who will take home the next big jackpot.” Desert Diamond Casinos & Entertainment, with three locations in Southern Arizona (Tucson, Sahuarita, and Why) and one in the West Valley in Glendale, Arizona, is owned and operated by the Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise, an enterprise of the Tohono O’odham Nation. Desert Diamond Casinos has implemented extensive safety protocols at each location that follow recommended guidelines from the CDC. More info can be found at DDCAZ.com or by calling 1.833.DDC2WIN. $

SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker
CASINOS POST LOCKDOWN The Good, The Bad, The Ugly
N
ow that almost all the casinos in Arizona are back open again, some after lengthy closures, let’s examine what’s working or not from the point of view of our readers. This is a summary of what they have been telling us. The Positives In Order Of Importance Smoke-Free Casinos: Readers agree the best result of the pandemic and lockdowns has been the smoke-free environment in almost every casino. Even smokers agree with the change as they do not smoke in their homes or other buildings and are used to going outside to smoke. Employees are remarking how much more energy they have after a shift because of the clean air. Message received: “Go smoke-free and stay smoke-free!” Cleaning And Sanitizing: Readers are quite happy to see the increased cleaning activity. They are commenting on the heightened focus and attention to detail devoted to cleaning. Regardless of if a casino closes overnight to clean and sanitize or not, our readers feel good about what they see. Temperature Checks: Based on the feedback we have received; temperature checks really make our readers feel comfortable when going to the casino. Knowing all patrons and employees are subjected to this type of screening every day really enhances the level of security among our fans. Mandatory Masks: Readers are setting their personal views about masks aside because they want to gamble. Unilaterally, masks make all our readers feel better about their experience at
34 Arizona Gaming Guide | November 2020 | azgamingguide.com
the casino. In some cases, readers report they wish certain casinos would better enforce their own mask policy. Social Distancing Of People And Slots: Many readers report they are so happy most slots are separated from one another. The extra room apparently makes most readers feel more comfortable, pandemic or not. The breathing room between players is, apparently, welcomed as are the signs on the floor reminding people to keep their distance when in line. The Negatives In Order Of Importance Not All Casinos Are Offering All Games: Many readers report being disappointed their favorite slot is turned off for distancing reasons. As a result, readers are choosing to visit only certain casinos to play their favorite slot, table game or bingo. Not All Casinos Have Distanced Their Slots: Readers are disappointed that not all of the casinos have chosen to physically separate their slots and use other spaces, like a bingo hall, to expand the existing casino floor, as some casinos have. No Standardization Between Casinos: Many readers are confused why Arizona’s casinos enforce different policies. In response, I can reassure our readers that while all the casinos are following the same safety and health guidelines, each casino is physically different in its design, and is owned/operated by a different Tribe. The individual Tribes are free to make their own decisions based on the unique circumstances of their Tribal members, employees, patrons, and the building. $
