s promised, all the editorial sections you’ve come to expect and love over the past 13 volumes of our magazine are back this month. Now that the big trade show in Las Vegas is over, the casino gaming industry can take a deep breath and plunge headlong into the next few exciting months. There are a lot of changes to talk about here in Arizona and we’ve done our best to present as much as we can in this issue. I do have an observation to make which seems to be a recurring sentiment amongst our readers based on the correspondences we receive. I, personally, have been frequenting casinos for over 20 years and have never witnessed such poor behavior in people then I have this year. The pandemic has put a tremendous toll on everyone and there are way too many people that I encounter on any given day (both inside and outside the casino) that seem to be less tolerant, extremely impatient, rude and even aggressive. It makes me sad to see the emotional state of people in the world today. When I get up every morning, my right foot hits the floor first. I do my gratitude meditation, count my blessings, and focus on what I have to accomplish across the day with excitement and enthusiasm. I wish that more people would try and be in a more positive state of mind. Don’t get me wrong, there are many days when it doesn’t come easy for me. I have to work at it. However, I do know that taking my frustrations out on other people is not the solution. I truly believe politeness, kindness and keeping quiet if you don’t have anything nice to say, is the way to go in all situations. I have two pieces of advice for all our readers. One, stay away from people who choose to be ill-mannered and who take their frustration, anger, resentment, stress, pick a name for the negativity, out on others. Don’t let their negativity (and in most cases, selfishness) bring you down. And two, welcome joy, positivity, happiness, and luck into your life! Establish connections between people based on common ground and shared experiences. Life is too short to be anything but content! One of life’s little pleasures is casino gaming! And that includes everything from the games, to the dining, to the entertainment. Have fun! That’s what it’s all about! Thank you for being our loyal readers and eagerly anticipating every new issue. We are grateful for everyone who is connected to our mission to bring information on the latest games, casino news, and the greater casino gaming industry in a positive way to Arizona’s casino enthusiasts. Have A Lucky Month!

EVENT WAGERING APP NOT WORKING? We Break Down Why This Is A Very Rare Exception
I
have a question for you. I signed up with [a sportsbook] app. It works great in the majority of Arizona. I live on "Reservation Land" [sic] in Arizona and the app locks me out saying I cannot wager on Federally Protected Tribal land. I find this ironic as the [sportsbook] app is sponsored by [the Tribe whose land I reside on]. Can you address this issue? Kevin Ray—Phoenix Area, AZ Thank you so much for being a loyal reader and for sending in your question. The concern you raise is one which will be encountered by users of sportsbook apps across Arizona. So, we felt it would be best to highlight your issue and the explanation as it applies to all event wagering enthusiasts in the state regardless of the sportsbook app they use or the Tribe or sports team holding the event wagering license. We reached out to the Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG) for their comments which are included in our response to you. Earlier this year, the state legalized event wagering, which allows for 10 off-reservation event wagering licenses for Arizona Tribes and 10 off-reservation event wagering licenses to Arizona sports teams/organizations. Additionally, the amended TribalState Gaming Compacts currently allows for event wagering to be conducted by a Tribe within their Tribal gaming facility. Specifically, according to the statutes passed by the Arizona legislature and signed by Governor Ducey, § A.R.S. 5-1303(D), an Event Wagering Operator may not accept any wager if the individual who places the wager is physically present on Indian lands when the wager is initiated. Furthermore, event wagering was also legalized for Arizona Tribes through the amended Tribal-State gaming compacts (compact), signed earlier this year by Governor Ducey and Arizona Tribes. The regulations for event wagering are outlined in Appendix K of the compact, which currently allows a Tribal casino to operate event wagering within their facility. As a result, Event Wagering Operators can accept wagers anywhere in Arizona except from Tribal lands, and Arizona Tribes can also accept wagers from within a Tribal casino. This leaves, let’s call it a donut hole, for wagering using a sportsbook app
06 Arizona Gaming Guide | November 2021 | azgamingguide.com
authorized by a Tribe on Tribal land outside of a Tribal casino. Enthusiasts cannot place wagers through a sportsbook app while on Tribal land unless they are inside a Tribal casino and using a sportsbook app authorized by that Tribe. Based on the regulations included in the compact which allows for fantasy and event wagering in accordance with the laws passed this year by the Arizona legislature and signed by Governor Ducey, all sportsbook apps in Arizona monitor the physical location of the device using the wagering app continuously while the app is being used. This is accomplished by using geofencing. A geofence is a perimeter boundary created around the location of a device based on the device’s GPS or RFID signals. Once the geofencing check is completed, if the device is determined not to be on Tribal land, but within Arizona, the sportsbook app can be used, and wagers can be placed. If the device is in a gaming facility in Arizona, wagers can be placed on a sportsbook app authorized by the Tribal casino. However, if the device is on Tribal land in Arizona and is not within a gaming facility, wagers cannot be placed on the app. So, take care if you are in a moving vehicle in Arizona and using a sportsbook app. If your driver takes you onto Tribal land, your sportsbook app won’t allow you to place wagers! And remember, don’t operate a vehicle and your smartphone at the same time. That also violates Arizona state law. Furthermore, based on the compact, users of sports wagering apps are notified when a geofence check fails, and a log of any apps failing a geofence check is kept which can be monitored by the specific Tribe’s Tribal Gaming Office (TGO) and ADG. In addition, both TGOs and ADG monitor geofence data in real time. We hope this clears up why your app is blocking you from wagering on Tribal land unless you are in that Tribe’s casino. You’ll encounter the same issue with any other sportsbook app as well. In short, the gaming regulations prevent it based on Arizona State Law and the compact. Those rules apply to all of us, including the event wagering license holders. Best of luck on your next bets! $

VIDEO POKER CORNER By Lana Hartmann
TRIPLE DOUBLE BONUS Kickers Anyone?
C
ontinuing with the discussion from last month’s article on Triple Double Bonus Poker, I thought we might investigate the hint I mentioned in a little more detail.
You are dealt three Aces with a kicker and a face card while playing a version of the game where a Three of a Kind pays 2 credits (10 at the 5 coin max bet), a Full House pays 9 credits (45 at the 5 coin max bet), the Four Aces pay 160 credits (800 at the 5 coin max bet), and the Four Aces with a kicker pay 800 credits (4000 at the 5 coin max bet). What should you do now—drop the kicker or hold the kicker? If we drop the kicker (and obviously the face card as well), a number of hands can be produced: The Four Aces with a kicker, just Four Aces, a Full House, or we are left with the Three of a Kind we held. We have about a 1 in 100 chance of getting the kicker and an Ace, about a 1 in 31 chance of getting the Ace without the kicker, about a 1 in 16 chance of getting a Full House, and essentially a guaranteed chance of getting a Three of a Kind. So our approximate long term mathematical advantage for this situation, the return to player (RTP), is about 16 credits ( 1/100 x 800 + 1/31 x 160 + 1/16 x 9 + 1/1 x 2 ).
Drop Or Hold The Kicker? If we hold the kicker and just drop the face card, the available resulting hands are: The Four Aces with the held kicker, a Full House with the held kicker, or a Three of a Kind. We have exactly a 1 in 47 chance of getting the last Ace, about a 1 in 16 chance of getting a Full House, and again are essentially guaranteed a chance of getting a Three of a Kind. Remember that we can’t get the Four Aces without the kicker as we held the kicker already. Our approximate long term mathematical advantage for this situation, the RTP, is about 20 credits ( 1/47 x 800 + 1/16 x 9 + 1/1 x 2 ). As our approximate long term mathematical advantage, or RTP, is higher when we hold the kicker, it is in the player’s best interest to hold the kicker with three Aces when playing Triple Double Bonus Poker. In fact, how much you win for the Full House and Three of a Kind is not important, just the fact you are awarded additional credits for having the Four Aces with a kicker is what makes all the difference in your playing strategy. Enjoy the kickers! $

FOCUS Create A Game Plan And Then Follow It
W
hen most players plan a trip to the casino, they really have no idea what they are going to play. They will wander around until something catches their attention and sit down. If you go to the casino thinking that you are going to lose $100, that’s probably exactly what will happen if you don’t have a plan. May I suggest that before you head out to the casino you put together a game plan. The first rule is to keep your emotions out of your game. Just like in life, if you have emotions involved in a decision you tend to make bad choices. When you look at something from a logical point of view, you tend to make better decisions. The second rule is to have a loss limit and stick to it. If you have a problem doing that, leave your ATM and credit cards at home. If you’re a slot machine player, compare payouts. Many machines that look the same have different pay schedules. Knowing which ones pay the best will help your money last longer too. If you’re a video poker player, compare payouts. The same machine with the exact game can have different payouts in different parts of the casino.
and I must caution you about information available on websites, posts or videos on social media, and YouTube videos. There is a lot of noise out there online, most of it is inaccurate at best. I personally have two video poker machines at my house that were once used in the casino. As a result, I can tell you everything there is about the different games and the way they can be set for odds.
If you are going to play blackjack, at least know basic strategy and be able to play it without hesitation. Flashcards are a good way to practice at home to help you master basic strategy. While at the table, focus on the game. There is nothing more frustrating for players at the blackjack table than someone not paying attention when it’s their turn to stand, hit, split or double. It slows the game down and other players may not say anything but they are not thinking happy thoughts about you. If you’re a beginner, it’s not a bad idea to go on a slow night and get one-on-one with a dealer who is willing to help you. After all, we were all beginners at one time. Being considerate of other players goes a long way in making sure everyone has a fun time at the casino.
One thing that you will find that is true with all casinos is they are very good at taking your money. Ultimately, a casino is a business. Businesses make money. By being an informed player you can make their job more difficult and at the same time make your money last longer.
The main point here is to learn everything that you can about the game or games that you intend to play. There is a lot of information in this magazine about most games. Find out all you can about a game, then you can decide if it’s a game you want to play. There are many ways to go about doing your research

GET A HUNCH—BET A BUNCH A Word Of Caution For The Sports Wagering Impulse
T
he lure of sports wagering is that it’s easy, right? Just pick your favorite team and win every time they win! But don’t do what the title says! Betting on a hunch leads to bankroll blues. Sports wagering is finally legal in Arizona, from Chase Field (Caesars Entertainment/Diamondbacks) to WynnBET at Apache Gold Casino and 14 other sites. Much of the wagering will be via mobile, but each partnership must be anchored to a physical place, like Footprint Center or the Phoenix Raceway. That’s a win for the local sports locations and casinos. But is it a win for you? Only if you do your homework! Smart Sports Wagering To start with, be careful betting on teams you love! Most of us like action on games we watch but don’t let sentiment make your decisions for you. Some players go as far as to never wager on their favorite teams. You could do worse to start! You learned the rules of blackjack before you raised your bets, right? Do the same with sports wagering. Learn the system, and you’ll do much better – just like learning basic strategy at blackjack. To begin with, the vigorish on sports wagering starts at about 9%. A standard wager is $11 to win $10, and it gets tougher from there. That means if you make all your football wagers this season at 11/10, you’ll need to win 53 games and lose only 47 to break even. If you are wagering on the winner/loser of the game, there’s also that sticky point spread thing. If you bet $110 on the Cardinals at home to beat the ‘Niners but have to give up 3.5 points, you’ll lose your wager if the ‘Niners win outright or if the Cards win by less than 4 points. What to do? Our Best Sports Wagering Advice Like all forms of wagering, you should set a bankroll for your action. Whatever that bankroll is, break the total down to at least ten bets; 20 would be better. Then make the same wager on each game. Having a hunch that Team “A” is going to do well
18 Arizona Gaming Guide | November 2021 | azgamingguide.com
Sunday, so you’ll bet a bunch is a flawed system! You can’t know with certainty which game is worth a larger wager. Watching some games is essential, not just recaps that tend to make you think Joe X is a great quarterback when the truth is that he had one good game. And, keep track of which teams have top players on the disabled list and won’t play. The line will move with that information, but if you count on a star who’s out of action, you’ll find your bankroll is soon out of action too. Finally, be aware that popular teams (Saints, Cowboys, Packers, and now the Bucs and Chiefs) may get lopsided point spreads. Consider taking the underdog if the spread is ugly to keep your bankroll pretty! If you take the underdog on the money line, you don’t have to win that many wagers to make a profit. Betting on close games where the underdog is at home and getting +1.50 or more can boost your bankroll significantly. You might also consider splitting your bankroll into point spread and money line wagers and see how you do! $

Roulette Now Live At Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino
Tohono O’odham Nation Secures Event Wagering License
Now there’s one more reason to come and check out the fun! Roulette is now live at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino. The popular table game is the latest addition to the property’s gaming options that lets casino guests play their way.
Sports Betting is Coming to Arizona and the Nation’s Desert Diamond Casinos this Fall! The Tohono O’odham Nation is excited to announce that its Desert Diamond Mobile LLC enterprise has been awarded an event wagering license for statewide mobile sports betting and event wagering. The Nation is finalizing a contractual relationship with a leading sports betting platform that will power all of its sports and event wagering offerings.
Earlier this year, the Arizona State Senate passed HB 2772 amending the current gaming compact allowing tribal casinos the opportunity to add additional live table games to their current offerings. Since then, Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino has added Craps, Baccarat and now Roulette to the casino gaming floor. Celebrating more than 25 years in Maricopa, Arizona, Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino is Arizona’s first and only tribal casino to have an international management partner. Harrah’s AkChin is the only casino in Arizona that allows guests, through its Caesars Rewards program, to unlock benefits and other prizes that can be used worldwide at the entire Caesars’ family of casinos. Harrah’s Ak-Chin also boasts one of the two Bingo halls within the Caesars portfolio, continuing the proud heritage of William F. Harrah, who opened his first Bingo hall in Reno in 1937. In addition to Craps, Baccarat, slot machines, video poker, video Keno, statewide progressives and blackjack, Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino guests can also enjoy a variety of dining options, including the Copper Cactus Grill, Chop, Block & Brew, Oak & Fork, Agave’s Restaurant and Dunkin’®. Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino features 529 luxurious resort and tower guestrooms, spa and fitness center, and an outdoor swimming pool with swim-up bar. In addition to mobile sports betting statewide, the Nation’s Desert Diamond Casinos near Tucson, Sahuarita, and Glendale will be opening on-site sports books this fall. These amenities will further enhance the diverse gaming options at the three properties, which also are adding slot machines and rolling out new table games, including craps, roulette and baccarat. Tohono O’odham Nation Chairman Ned Norris, Jr. said “Today’s announcement is a significant step forward and we look forward to becoming a leader in offering sports and event wagering in our casinos and statewide. These new operations will generate additional funds for vital programs that serve our tribal members, offer new entertainment options for the public, and generate additional revenues that will remain here in Arizona. This shows once again what we can accomplish by working together.” The Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise, with three Desert Diamond Casino locations in Southern Arizona (Tucson, Sahuarita, and Why) and one in Phoenix’s West Valley, and Desert Diamond Mobile LLC are enterprises of the Tohono O’odham Nation. Sports Betting Has Arrived In Arizona With Caesars Sportsbook
Casino Del Sol Announces New Retail Sportsbook, SolSports
The wait is finally over and legal sports betting in the state of Arizona is officially live. As an Authorized Gaming Operator of Major League Baseball and in partnership with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Caesars Entertainment, Inc. celebrated sports betting’s legalization with a kickoff event featuring dignitaries and celebrities, a charitable donation of $20,000 to the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation, a ceremonial first bet, and more.
Casino Del Sol is announcing its new sportsbook, SolSports, where guests will have the opportunity to wager on a variety of sporting events. Construction is underway on the new onsite sportsbook, and Casino Del Sol will manage all sports betting activities as the operator.
Emmy nominated actor-comedian JB Smoove, who stars as ‘Caesar’ in the brand’s nationwide advertising campaign, Caesars Sportsbook Chief Trends Officer and Brand Ambassador Trey Wingo, Arizona Diamondbacks legend Luis Gonzalez and CEO and President Derrick Hall, along with state dignitaries, including Governor Doug Ducey, placed the ceremonial first bets for charity at Caesars Sportsbook at Chase Field, home of the D-backs. The event featured festivities for fans in attendance, food and beverage, and sports betting 101-style education around responsible gaming before sports bets were placed for the first time at a temporary retail sportsbook at the Chase Field box office ticket windows. “Today’s event was a culmination of what we’ve been excited about for quite some time, bringing legal sports betting to the great sports fans in Arizona,” said Chris Holdren, CoPresident of Caesars Digital. “Arizona is like a second home for Caesars, and we’ve operated in the state for more than 25 years. We take pride in our brand-new Caesars Sportsbook app being online for day one of sports betting here and we’re ecstatic to offer Arizonans a sports betting experience that can’t be matched.” For more info, be sure to visit the website of the Arizona Diamondbacks at mlb.com/dbacks/ballpark/caesars-sportsbook. $

SolSports is being built in the former Paradiso Lounge space at Casino Del Sol. The spacious 4,000-square-foot venue will surround guests with more than 60 televisions including jumbo flat screens and a high-definition video wall to allow viewing from every angle. Seating more than 100 people, the sportsbook will also feature a full bar, food service, new booths and tables with luxury seating and six live betting windows with personnel ready to assist and answer questions. Casino Del Sol and Casino of the Sun will also have several self-service sports betting kiosks located in both properties. Instead of partnering with an out-of-state third-party operator, Casino Del Sol will serve as the sportsbook’s operator and bookmaker to deliver a signature, on-brand sports betting experience to guests. OpenSports, the industry’s leading sports betting technology from Scientific Games, will serve as the backend platform powering SolSports. “Our goal is to continue to add to our offerings, so we are looking forward to providing our guests with another exceptional gaming experience with our new sportsbook,” said CEO of Casino Del Sol, Kimberly Van Amburg. “SolSports will provide the ultimate environment for guests to watch and bet on their favorite professional and college sporting events.” For more information about SolSports and to sign up for updates, visit SolSports.bet. $

SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker
READER ASKS ABOUT COINS & KIOSKS Who Makes These Decisions & Why Are They Implemented Like This?
S
o, I’m not the only one who thinks the way things work at a casino is a little weird. By now, my readers have certainly realized that. I thought it would be a great idea to print this letter I recently received. Enjoy! Hi Sami, I’ve noticed the casinos in Arizona want to get rid of coins. The cash machines at some places don’t spit them out anymore. At other places they do. What’s up with that? It’s really weird at the casinos where the coins don’t come out of the machine but when they pay me for a big win they still hand me coins. But then at other casinos there’s no coins at all and I’m asked when they pay me “You don’t want your coins, right?” That’s rude. I just won and you aren’t going to pay me all of my win because you assume I don’t want the change? Or, they’ll pay me bills plus a ticket for the change. But I can’t use the ticket at the change machine! So now, I either have to put the ticket in a game (funny how that works) or go to the cage and stand in line to cash my ticket. And don’t get me started about the change machines. I like big bills. Why is the machine giving me fives and twenties for a $300 ticket? If I wanted all this change, I’d go to the cage, thank you. But if I put a $5 bill into the machine, I can’t get singles!!!??? Then, other cash machines ask me how I want my cash split up before it spits out the money. That’s nice! But why can’t I do the same thing when I put my ticket in? And don’t get me started about change machines that are basically charity donation boxes. If I want to donate to charity, I’m going to do it on my own time and in my own way. I always research the charity I’m donating to and frequently volunteer my time. So donating by pressing a button is not my idea of charity. The casinos really should look at all of this. Sometimes I really wonder if the people who make these decisions ever spend any time as a customer in their own casino. Edward Burns – Phoenix, Arizona
34 Arizona Gaming Guide | November 2021 | azgamingguide.com
Thanks Edward for your comments. Know you are not alone in your customer experience. I’ve been there. A lot. The comment you refer to about presuming you don’t want the coins is rude. Flat out, no excuses. That’s rude. The win is your win. All of it. And, if it’s a taxable win over the $1,200.00 IRS limit you have to report it. Every penny by the way. I see the kiosks as the casino’s way of providing convenience to their customers. But, setting them up to not spit out singles and coins is beyond strange. Especially if the casino is paying you jackpots in coins. And, my guess is if you put a $4 ticket in the kiosk there, you would actually get four $1 bills. But a $5 doesn't get you $1s! I mean, everyone needs tip money, right? Or, would the casino prefer the patrons don’t tip the staff? Oh, I’m sorry, you’re supposed to tip in $5 increments there, right? Perhaps that casino should round up to the nearest $5 when they pay you your wins. How about that? Until the federal government decides to get rid of coins entirely, pay the coins without comment during a jackpot and at the kiosk. Or, just round up to the nearest $1 the way some casinos do during a jackpot, and then set up the casino’s kiosks for flexibility. Patrons should be presented with options at the kiosks to choose how to break their cash and tickets quickly and easily. To me this is just so obvious. Plus, consistency between casinos at the kiosks would be nice! A girl can dream, right? $

A van filled with politicians was heading down a country road when, suddenly, the van careened off the road and crashed into a tree near a farmer’s field. A farmer out plowing his field saw what happened. After investigating, he proceeded to bury all the politicians. A few days later the local sheriff came out, saw what was left of the van, and asked the farmer where all the politicians had gone. “I buried them.” “Were they all dead?” “Well, some of them said they weren’t,” the farmer admitted, “but you know how them politicians lie.”
