Superstitions: Things You Mustn’t Do!

VOLUME 14 • ISSUE 02 MANAGING DIRECTOR & VIDEO POKER GURU Elizabeth Torma liz@azgamingguide.com

F

ebruary 1st, 2022 marks the start of the Lunar New Year. This year, it’s the year of the Water Tiger according to the Asian Zodiac. Asian people traditionally believe that the year's start affects the whole year, so the Spring Festival (beginning with the Lunar New Year) is a season of superstitions. Just like the Gregorian calendar’s New Year’s Day and the traditions associated with it around the world and across cultures, there are many things you must not do on the day of the Lunar New Year: Do not make or eat porridge as it may bring poverty in the new year. Do not wash hair or clothes as it may wash away good luck. Do not work with needles as it may deplete wealth. Do not use any “unlucky” words like “pain” as it may bring pain. Do not sweep as it may sweep away wealth. Don’t cry as it may bring bad luck. Don’t break dishes as it may bring misfortune. Don’t use scissors or knives as they may “cut” wealth. Do not lend or borrow money as it may lead to debt. Do not wear black or white clothes as they are unlucky colors. Do not have or handle odd amounts of money as it may be unlucky. Do not visit the hospital as it may bring illness. I’m going to incorporate this list into my day on February 1. It’ll be a lot of fun to practice these Asian traditions on the day of the Lunar New Year! Again, Have A Lucky Year!
