he casino gaming industry is so interesting. Here’s something I wasn’t aware of until I visited the 2022 National Indian Gaming Tradeshow and Convention (NIGA). I’m sure all of our readers remember Hexbreaker by IGT. Love it or hate it, I think it’s a really solid game with a great theme! Well, IGT released Hexbreaker II and now Hexbreak3r (the third version of the game). And, IGT has made the game available for slot tournaments too! In order to promote the newest incarnation and to showcase it on their slot tournament platform, IGT kicked off NIGA by hosting the annual Spirit of Sovereignty Slot Tournament in the Company’s booth. Participants played the Hexbreak3r tournament solution. Former professional basketball player A.C. Green captured first place in the tournament, which had 14 participants and raised $24,000, including a $10,000 contribution from IGT. All proceeds went to support tribal scholarships and programming for Native youth through the Spirit of Sovereignty Fund, which was established in 2002 as the charitable arm of the National Indian Gaming Association. “Hosting the annual Spirit of Sovereignty Slot Tournament in IGT’s NIGA booth is always a distinct honor and the ideal way to kick off such an important trade show,” said Nick Khin, IGT Chief Operating Officer, Gaming. “This year, the tournament was a platform to debut our Hexbreak3r Tournament solution and entertain our customers while raising funds that support Native youth.”

Isn't that really exciting? The casino gaming industry is full of surprises. Have A Lucky Month!

PLAYERS TALK

WHEN TOO MUCH IS TOO MUCH Plus: Responses To The Question In May’s Issue

Dear Players Talk, The question I’m asking is why do [the casinos] serve people drinks when they are already drunk? Don’t they see their bartenders doing the wrong thing? I see they continue to sell people drinks all the time. I even had an argument with one of [the employees] because a guest was already drunk. Afterall they are the ones selling the guest all the drinks they wanted! Please ask management to check the bartenders carefully. I don’t want to be on the road with drunk drivers. I enjoy going to the casinos but I want to be safe when I go home. Thank you for your time and I enjoy reading the Arizona Gaming Guide each month. Margaret Quiroz—Tucson, AZ Hi Margaret! Thanks for writing in with your concern. The topic you write about is certainly valid. All of us want to feel safe inside a casino, and on our way home. Fortunately, casino staff, including bartenders, are trained to detect intoxicated patrons. As you can imagine, this can become challenging for employees to track when a casino is busy and when there may be staffing problems at the bar. So, things happen. However, security personnel and other employees on the casino floor are on the lookout for intoxicated guests. That’s part of their job too. So, you may not be aware that people who appear to be drunk are then escorted by other casino staff in a variety of ways. We’ve witnessed security assisting patrons back to their hotel rooms. We’ve also seen security request assistance from staff who are EMTs to determine if there may be medical issues involved. On other occasions, we’ve observed security arranging transportation back home for patrons who have indulged a little too much. And, we’ve also seen Tribal Police get involved in situations concerning alcohol as well. Hopefully our response alleviates some of your very valid concerns. We appreciate your message (so do the casinos) and thanks for writing in Margaret!

drama, random opinions, fights and more is just too annoying. Now I just watch the videos made by the slot companies on their websites. Carla Shaffer—Tucson, AZ Watching someone else play a slot in a casino that I can’t get to is just dumb. All I care about is playing my games at [my favorite casinos]. Bob Witkowski—Sahuarita, AZ I never thought about watching someone else play slots online. So I checked out a few videos. I’m not doing that again. That’s not real and it’s not fun. I’ll stick to watching my cooking and healthy living videos. And, when I have the itch to play a slot, I’ll go to [my favorite casino]. I’m not going to my iPad and watch someone else play. Marie T.—Mesa, AZ Like I believe everything I see in the latest Spiderman movie or on the news either! Whatever. That’s just a bunch of overproduced noise. Joe Schneider—Cave Creek, AZ You wrote about internet slot videos in the May issue. While I don’t agree with everything in your response (most of it I do), you do know these videos are set up by the casinos, right? J.J. Scott Thomas—Golden Valley, AZ I asked around and the videos you talk about are all paid for by the casinos. That’s not even [their] money they are playing with. It’s just like in the old days when the casinos used to pay people to sit in the casino and play all day long screaming “I won” just to attract attention. Wayne Carlton—Yuma, AZ

Editor’s Note: Last month's question from a reader about slot videos that are posted online, and our reply, produced an overwhelming response. What follows is a small selection that is representative of the emails, letters, and messages we received. Overall, it seems a majority of our readers and fans agree with how we feel and the issues we raised.

Thank you for writing about recording videos in casinos. I don’t like it when I see people recording in the casinos because I don’t feel comfortable in general when people have their cameras out taping random things. I don’t want to be a part of their video. Especially not when I’m [playing at the casino] and they can post all over the internet. I like my privacy, thank you. Linda D.—Chandler, AZ

lot, table, and interactive games manufacturer AGS brings its revolutionary Bonus Spin Xtreme (BSX) to nearly 40 table games at the now open Palms Casino Resort Las Vegas (24 blackjack tables, 12 baccarat tables, 3 roulette tables). Ronald LaDuca, AGS’ Vice President of Sales for Table Products, says, “This cutting-edge install is a major success for AGS. Our deal with the Palms marks our largest BSX installation to date. We’re proud to work with the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians to bring BSX to new players at the Palms Las Vegas, building on our previous install of 12 roulette tables at the Band’s Yaamava’ Resort & Casino at San Manuel in California.” Paul Garcia, Director of Tables Games at the Palms Las Vegas, says, “By linking nearly 40 tables on Palms’ floor to a fast-growing single jackpot pool, Bonus Spin Xtreme elevates the player experience by creating more ways to win and have fun at the table.” BSX is a proprietary technology that can link all table games within a casino, even if those games have disparate math models. The feature provides faster incrementing and larger progressive jackpots, rising to the challenge of offering a single jackpot on community-style table games. $

VIDEO POKER CORNER By Lana Hartmann

QUICK TIPS ON POPULAR GAMES Learn About Your Favorite Or Try Something New

any of our readers write in to ask if we have any suggestions about playing Video Poker. Yes we do!

M

2. Never hold two dealt pairs if one of the pairs are Aces. Hold just the Aces and drop the other pair. Hold all other dealt pairs.

Playing Video Poker at casinos can be very beneficial if you are wanting to stretch your bankroll, especially over time. Video poker, even in lower denominations, usually has a low house edge. That’s a good thing here in Arizona, where the house edge on the slots could be as high as 20% as allowed by the State’s Gaming Compacts. And, players can’t tell on the slots what the payback percentage has been set to. But on Video Poker you can tell!

3. Never hold three cards to a Straight or a Flush and never hold a single low card.

CHOOSE YOUR GAME WISELY As one example, below are the various pay tables & payback percentages for the Video Poker game Jacks or Better. Shop around and make sure you’re playing at a casino whose game has the highest return! Keep an eye out on what’s happening to those Full House and Flush payouts! WIN Royal Flush Straight Flush 4-of-a-Kind Full House Flush Straight 3-of-a-Kind Two Pair Jacks or Better PAYBACK (%)

5 CREDIT PAYS 4000 4000 4000 4000 250 250 250 250 125 125 125 125 45 45 40 35 30 25 25 25 20 20 20 20 15 15 15 15 10 10 10 10 5 5 5 5 99.5 98.4 97.2 96.1

4000 250 125 30 25 20 15 10 5 94.9

TIPS FOR DOUBLE DOUBLE BONUS 1. Never hold a dealt Full House with three Aces! Hold just the Aces and drop the other two cards. Hold all other dealt Full Houses.

4. Never throw away a Straight Flush to draw for a Royal Flush. 5. Don’t be afraid to drop a dealt hand for five new cards when there are no high cards, no pairs, potential flush or potential straight options. TIPS FOR DEUCES WILD Deuces Wild is one of the most popular Video Poker games on the casino floors. The four Deuces, which are wild cards, not only provide a lot of excitement and anticipation but also make the game a lot less volatile than most other Video Poker games. However, did you know that when playing this game using optimal strategy you are discarding all 5 cards 20% of the time? Yes, 1 in 5 deals will have you drawing all new cards. Patience is key with this game and knowing that discarding all 5 cards will yield wins 6% of the time! Hint: When dealt a Wild Royal Flush with 3 Deuces, hold the Wild Royal! JOKER’S WILD Joker’s Wild Video Poker games are fun, but watch out for the games that pay 15 credits (per credit) for a Four-of-a-Kind rather than 20! There can be a 4% drop in the payback percentage with these variations. Also, stay away from games that pay only on two pair rather than a pair of Kings. Have Fun! $

TABLE GAMES By Al Moe

YOUR ARIZONA GAMING BANKROLL Examining Minimum Wagers At Table Games

J

ust because Arizona raised the maximum per-bet limit on table games to $100,000 (yikes!) doesn’t mean you have to bet more money to have fun. The slots are still ringing, “Bingo” is still getting screamed, and you might even find some $5 or $10 limit table games at six in the morning. Want the prices low? Go when it’s slow! Yes, the casinos adjust their limits based on the crowd, so slow crowds bring lower limits and busy weekends and holidays bring premium prices. Now that you know, go with the flow. But keep your eyes open. Check the on-table signage or ask the dealers to avoid confusion about table game limits. They won’t mind. While blackjack with a $15 to $500 limit is pretty straightforward - $15 minimum wager, $500 maximum - other games can be confusing. When I was a kid in Nevada, you could play craps for 25 cents. That won’t ever be the case in Arizona, but hamburgers don’t cost 59 cents anymore either. Most craps games in Las Vegas and Arizona start at $15 or $25. There aren’t that many craps games. It takes four workers to deal the game and, because the games take up the space of several blackjack tables, they aren’t cheap to offer or to play. Still, that $15 minimum wager is deceiving. It’s $15 to bet on the Pass line, but you can bet less on proposition bets like “12” or the “hardways.” Again, ask the dealers and you’ll know more. ROULETTE MINIMUMS The roulette signs might also be confusing for new players. You might be walking around looking for a game and quickly read “Minimum $1” and think, “Wow, that’s cheap.” And it is. But read the whole sign. They usually say, “per chip,” so when you buy in and get your own colored chips, that’s the minimum for each chip. Higher limits are likely! In addition, when you take a color, there’s a minimum number that you must wager each spin, and it’s usually three chips. If the table says “$5 per chip - minimum three,” you must wager $15 or more each spin. The other sign you see, such as $10 to $500, means that’s the minimum wager for a bet with regular casino chips, not the colored roulette chips.

16 Arizona Gaming Guide | June 2022 | azgamingguide.com

That $10 wager can be bet on any combination of numbers, or it can be on a column, color, or section. When you win, you’ll get paid in regular chips, not the colored chips designed for players who are mostly wagering on numbers. Confused? That’s alright; it’s easy once you’ve played. Confused about craps? Go ahead and be - seven you win, seven you lose, it’s tough at first. But after you’ve played for an hour, it’ll all make perfect sense. As for your bankroll, nothing has changed with the introduction of new games. If the game takes multiple mandatory bets like Let it Ride, you need to know your bankroll must be higher than single-wager games like blackjack or even craps if you just bet the Pass Line and take odds. If you are playing roulette mostly on individual numbers, they only hit once in 38 spins on average so, yes, you’ll probably need more of a bankroll or less expensive chips each spin to survive! $

Writer Al Moe has worked in the casino industry for many years. He has lived and worked in Las Vegas, Reno, and Lake Tahoe. He also attended the University of Nevada, Reno. He is an avid writer and blogger. His book, “Vegas and the Mob," is available online at Amazon.com. He is also the proud father of four beautiful girls.

TABLE GAMES By TJ Jorgensen

UP YOUR GAME How To Go From Amateur To Pro

S

o you have practiced basic strategy at home and have it memorized perfectly. You think you’re ready to go out and beat the casino. Well there are a few additional things that you need to put in your arsenal to give yourself the best chance of winning. First of all, you need to leave your emotions at home and out of the game. No matter what happens good or bad, if you take your emotions out of the game you will make better decisions. For example, most players buy in for a certain amount and they play until they win a little or lose their entire bankroll. Try this instead: If you lose four hands in a row, wait until the shuffle to resume play or switch tables. The reason I say that is your odds of losing four hands in a row is only 14%. If you have managed to accomplish this feat, it is probably not going to be a winning table for you. I was in Las Vegas over the weekend and playing late at night around 3 a.m. A young man was having a pretty good run of luck and he was saying out loud, “You Can’t Beat Me!” It was a $100 minimum table and had managed to get ahead of the casino about $4,000. His friends were ready to leave so he put it all on one bet, one hand for $4,000 saying, “You Can’t Beat Me!” I was thinking to myself, if he wasn’t playing on his emotions he would be happy just quietly coloring up and walking out with $4,000 of the casino’s money. Well, as it turns out, he got blackjack and did the “happy dance” around all the blackjack tables and made good on his claim that the casino couldn’t beat him. But, if it had gone the other way, he would have regretted the next morning not walking away $4,000 ahead. DID YOU KNOW? Did you know that 70% of all the money you will win at blackjack comes from the hand of twenty, and blackjack? If you are pushing or losing on twenty, you are not going to win at that table. Don’t get mad and say to yourself “I’ll show him!” Just pick up your chips and switch tables. Remember, anger is just one letter short of danger. You would probably be surprised at the number of times I switch tables before I find the one that I like.

18 Arizona Gaming Guide | June 2022 | azgamingguide.com

Another consideration before you sit down to play is to observe the players sitting at the table and see how many chips they have. If one player has two chips and another one has three chips, it’s probably not going to be your table either. All the players at a blackjack table tend to have similar results. Blackjack is a very streaky game. If you play frequently, you can almost feel when it’s going your way, or going the casino’s way. When I’m winning, what I do to make sure I walk out a winner is set aside my original buy in and then set aside another $100. If I keep winning, I will keep adding to the amount I am setting aside. But if it starts going the other way, I cash out and make sure I walk out a winner. How many times have you heard someone say, “I was ahead $700!” Then you ask ,”How much did you win?” They say, “Well, I lost the $700 plus another $500!” If they just had the discipline to put aside an amount and walk out a winner. I guess that's why a lot of players are losers. If you decide that card counting is for you and would like to take your game to the next level, I cover card counting in my new book. My system keeps track of all the cards as they are dealt, and has a betting and playing strategy according to the count. By playing this way you have a mathematical advantage over any casino. Then it will be you, not the house, who has the advantage when you sit down to play. The new agreement will include visible signage and exclusive VIP experiences for casino and resort guests. For decades, the D-backs and the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation (Foundation) have been committed to investing in and supporting the Arizona Native American Community with over $3,000,000 in charitable contributions to the community over nearly half a century. In 1999, the Foundation established the Native American Inter-Tribal Baseball and Softball Tournament, which has made it possible for 20,000 youth and young adults as well as 1,200 Inter-Tribal teams to participate in the friendly but competitive event. Continuing their commitment to quality tournaments and fields for the community, together with the Colorado Rockies, the D-backs refurbished Lehi Field, with an additional SRPMIC field planned in the coming year. This expanding relationship was a natural progression for both organizations who share a common focus on engaging entertainment, premium events, unmatched guest experiences and meaningful commitments to the community. Arizona’s Sports Betting Revenues Down Slightly

Sports betting revenues were recently released for February 2022 by the Arizona Department of Gaming. “Arizona’s more than 12% decline in handle during February follows a national trend and shouldn’t be a warning sign. The state’s market should rebound nicely,” said BetArizona.com’s Analyst Christopher Boan. Arizona sports betting’s February handle was $491.6 million, down 12.8% from January’s state record figure of $563.6 million. It was slightly down from December’s handle of $499 million. Arizona’s February handle was sixth place nationally behind New York ($1.5 billion), New Jersey ($985.5 million), Nevada ($780.7 million), Illinois ($679.3 million) and Pennsylvania ($597 million). Colorado ($440.5 million), Michigan ($423.7 million), Indiana ($409.1 million) and Virginia ($401.8 million) were the other four states nationally above $400 million in handle in February. Handle drops in the 20% range were common across the country in February. The taxes taken in were $670,685, the second lowest monthly total since betting launched (Arizona took in just $31,393 in taxes in September). The state took in $1.749 million in January and $1.7 million in December. The biggest tax month since sports betting launched was November, when $3.1 million was earned for the state. Arizona has taken in nearly $9 million in taxes for the first five-plus months sports betting has been legal. Operators gave out $17.5 million in free bets and promotional credits in February. Operators get a tax break on the free bets and promotional credits they offer during the first five years of sports betting in Arizona. That tax break is up to 20% of their gross wagers for the first two years. $ Article submitted by (and available on) BetArizona.com.

ZZ TOP Casino Del Sol June 17, 2022

Joe Satriani Talking Stick Resort September 24, 2022

ZZ TOP a/k/a “That Little Ol’ Band From Texas,” lay undisputed claim to being the longest running major rock band with original personnel intact and, in 2004, the Texas trio was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Of course, there are only three of them – Billy F Gibbons, Dusty Hill (replaced by his guitar tech Elwood Francis after he passed in 2021), Frank Beard -- but it’s still a remarkable achievement that they’re still very much together after almost 50 years of rock, blues, and boogie on the road and in the studio. “Yeah,” says Billy, guitarist extraordinaire, “we’re the same three guys, bashing out the same three chords.” With the release of each of their albums the band has explored new ground in terms of both their sonic approach and the material they’ve recorded. ZZ TOP is the same but always changing.

You can easily make the case that the idea of shapeshifting is a consistent element that has been present throughout Joe Satriani’s incredible career which now stretches across 18 studio albums and nearly 35 years. Never one to make the same type of record twice, the symbiotic relationship that he has with his existing body of work and how it feeds into the next chapter that he’ll add to is a fascinating one.

ZZ TOP’s music is always instantly recognizable, eminently powerful, profoundly soulful and 100% Texas American in derivation. ZZ TOP’s support and link to the blues remains as rock solid as the music they continue to play. They have sold millions of records over the course of their career, have been officially designated as Heroes of The State of Texas, have been referenced in countless cartoons and sitcoms and are true rock icons but, against all odds, they’re really just doing what they’ve always done. They’re real and they’re surreal and they’re ZZ TOP. For more information, visit CasinoDelSol.com. $

Shapeshifting, his 18th studio album, grew out of a plan to focus on the idea of changing as the central theme. Listening to the initial demos that he had recorded, he thought the “shapeshifting” phrase is one that would fit well with the songs that he had come up with. “I started to think that it sounds like 15 different guitar players,” Satriani says. “I know it’s the same guy, because it’s me, but it sounds like I’m really moving into an area where each melody requires me to almost be somebody else.” He enlisted a wide range of collaborators, both old and new, to help him bring the songs to life. Legendary drummer Kenny Aronoff (John Fogerty), bassist Chris Chaney (Jane’s Addiction), and keyboardist Eric Caudieux were the core musicians on the new album. Satriani co-produced the album with Jim Scott (Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers). Don’t miss this guitar virtuoso perform live! SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker

HORSE RACING A Reader Wants More

M

ay 7, 2022 was this year’s Kentucky Derby. Once the bell sounded, the one and one quarter mile race was over in 2 minutes and 2.61 seconds. The winner, Rich Strike, had 30 to 1 odds in the morning and almost 81 to 1 final odds. Here’s what a reader had to say to me recently. My wife and I went to the Kentucky Derby in the beginning of May and had a great time! Always do. Your magazine has great information about all the casinos. I have a question, that’s more of a suggestion. Why don’t you also include information about horse racing in your magazine? Would love to see a regular column with on and off-track betting information and schedules. Track information and horse racing tips would be great too! On another note, we just realized that you send the magazine every month in an email, so we just registered for that which will help. The magazine racks at the casinos are usually empty by the end of the month so up until now, if we didn’t get in soon enough to pick up an issue, we’d go to your website and read it there. This will be easier to have it by email. Hope to see a horse racing section! Thanks for listening. Gary Morrison—Scottsdale, AZ

$2.4 Million – Largest amount lost on a bet. $500 to $1,000 – Price of a high-end hat (90% of female spectators wear hats). 120,000 – Number of Mint Juleps served over Kentucky Derby weekend, requiring 1,000 pounds of fresh mint and 60,000 pounds of ice. 522,000 – Number of cans of beer that were consumed.

Great suggestion, we will definitely incorporate more horse and dog racing info. Feedback from our readers are important to us because we want to provide interesting information our readers want to know about! We have incorporated many sections into our magazine over the years at the request of our readers. Thanks for the advice and for being our loyal fans. We appreciate you!

142,000 – Number of hot dogs that were eaten. $4 Million – The highest purchase price at auction for a Kentucky Derby winner (Fusaichi Pegasus, 2000). $1,200 – The lowest purchase price at auction for a Kentucky Derby winner (Canonero II, 1971).

FUN FACTS & HISTORY OF THE 2022 KENTUCKY DERBY 147,000 – Number of attendees that attended the 2022 Kentucky Derby (15 times more compared to the first race in 1875). $233 Million – Total wagers in 2021 (85% more than in 2020). $273.8 Million – Total wagers in 2022.

554 – Number of red roses awarded to the Kentucky Derby (known as the “Run for the Roses”) winner each year. 1:59:40 – The fastest time ever ran at the Kentucky Derby by Secretariat in 1973. $50,000 – The small fortune it costs to enter a horse in the Kentucky Derby ($25,000 entry fee and $25,000 starting fee).

$3 Million – Guaranteed purse ($1.86 Million for the winner). $1.2 Million – Won by a Texas woman on an $18 bet on a series of races in 2018 (second largest in Kentucky Derby History).
