NOODLES & DESSERTS!

Tacos, Pizza, Pasta, Chocolate & German

Moving right along to the days celebrating certain foods in October, I came across October 6th as National Noodle Day and GermanAmerican Day. Now that’s a combination!

With National Noodle day on the 6th, it got me thinking about all the noodle dishes I’ve tried at casino restaurants over the years. I really enjoy a great Marsala dish with some protein over a bed of house made fettuccini. Make sure you look for this dish the next time you eat out at a casino.

And then, let us know which casino has the best dish. We have been getting your feedback through the mail, email, and social. Please keep the tips coming.

October 04 – National Taco Day

October 06 – National Noodle & German-American Day

October 11 – National Sausage Pizza Day

October 14 – National Dessert Day

October 17 – National Pasta Day

October 28 National Chocolate Day

My team and I are so grateful to all of you for your correspondences. We really appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with us. As we compile all the results based on your suggestions, we will announce the final casino winners in all categories in an upcoming issue.

Have A Lucky Month!

TRIBAL + COMMERCIAL GAMING = $100B!

Gaming Revenue Continues To Grow Post-Pandemic

Hi Gaming Guide. I like reading the reports you publish every quarter on the Tribal statistics here in AZ for the revenue from all the casinos. It’s interesting to know the numbers.

However, I don’t recall you ever publishing the numbers for casinos outside of AZ, like the casinos in Vegas and so on. It would be interesting to compare.

The numbers here in AZ seem astronomical, so I’ve always wondered if we’re around the industry average or if all of us in AZ just like to gamble a lot. (lol) Thanks for a great read every month.

You can find me at the tables and I’m known as Big Ed. Big Ed via e-mail

Thank you for a great question Big Ed and for being an Arizona Gaming Guide fan. My team and I appreciate your support of our publication and your kind remarks.

Gaming revenue can be separated into two categories – Tribal gaming revenue and Commercial gaming revenue. Last year was a great year for all casinos as both the Tribal and Commercial gaming, as a group, touted record-breaking gaming revenues in 2022. And, this year looks like it is on track to break more records!

Tribal gaming revenues rose nearly 5% (or $1.9 billion) in fiscal year 2022 and reached $40.9 billion, which is the highest amount in its history according to the National Indian Gaming Commission. The 2021 fiscal year’s gross gaming revenue amounted to $39 billion which represents an increase of 40% when compared to the previous year’s gross gaming revenue of $27.8 billion. According to the annual report released by the AZ Department of Gaming, the tribes collectively brought in $2.7 billion in 2022 of which $123 million (or about 4.5% of the total revenue) went to the AZ Benefits fund.

The U.S. commercial gaming revenue reached an annual record of $60.4 billion in 2022, according to the American Gaming Association (AGA). This marks the first $60 billion year for the

commercial gaming industry, surpassing the previous record of $53 billion set in 2021. In fact, U.S. commercial gaming continued its long run of consecutive quarterly revenue growth in the second quarter, hitting a Q2 record of $16.07 billion, according to the AGA. The total outpaced Q2 2022 by 8.1% and marked the 10th consecutive quarter of annual growth for the commercial gaming industry. And, it’s no surprise that Q2 2023 is the second-highest grossing quarter in industry history, topped only by Q1 2023, making the first half of 2023 the commercial gaming industry’s strongest half ever. The $32.71 billion in commercial gaming revenue generated in the first six months of 2023 tracks 11.9% ahead of the same period last year!

Gaming is big money in AZ and all around the country – and the world! Over $101 billion of gaming revenue was generated from the Tribal and Commercial gaming sectors in 2022 just in North America alone.

However, before you go “OMG!!!” people are spending a lot on gaming entertainment, let’s just take a look at how much some sports leagues generated last year. In 2022, the 32 teams of the National Football League generated a total revenue of approximately $18.6 billion, which was an increase of over $1 billion (or 7%) from the previous year! Major League Baseball also established a new record for revenues during the 2022 season of nearly $11 billion in revenue. In the 2021/22 season, all 30 National Basketball Association teams combined generated revenues of just over $10 billion. This marks a significant increase on the figure from the 2020/21 season, which stood at $6.41 billion.

The U.S. golf course industry generated $26.1 billion in 2022. Major League Soccer also hit its peak revenue in 2022 at $210 Million in the U.S. which, of course, is just a splash in the pond compared to the almost $30 billion Euros (or over $32 billion U.S. dollars), the value of the European soccer market!

Moving forward, keep an eye out in our Gaming News section and we’ll make sure to provide you with the most recent quarterly and annual statistical reports for not only AZ Tribal Gaming but both Tribal and Commercial Gaming nationwide. Have a lucky month! $

FOUR WAYS TO PROFIT And Win Fewer Bets!

Itook a lot of shots playing basketball in college because it never occurred to me that I might miss. But I did, more than half. If I had hit over 50%, I’d have retired from the NBA and written about basketball, not casino gaming. But it’s all good. I’m lucky.

Casinos have been good to me, even though probability and statistics tell us we’ll lose more than half the bets we make. That’s how the casino pays the rent. But what about us? How do we pay the rent if we can’t win half our bets? That’s one of the most significant questions in gaming lore, like “Where can I get more money to gamble?”

EXAMPLE ONE KILLING IT AT POKER

If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right. So, to win at poker, you’ll need to practice, watch some videos of the pros playing (WSOP, WPT), and maybe even read a book or two. It’s a timeconsuming commitment, but when you’ve grasped Texas Hold ‘Em, you’ll find that you can profit while winning a single pot, even if you’ve previously lost multiple bets.

You don’t have to win every pot because you’ll get paid more than even money most of the time from multiple players. And when you start killing it, you’ll find ways to gain extra bets and get bigger calls from players you have dominated.

In games like Big-O and Omaha High-Low Split, you can scoop just a few pots in a long session and still show a profit.

EXAMPLE TWO BLACKJACK CARD COUNTING

Yes, there’s a learning curve to profiting at Blackjack by learning Basic Strategy and then a card-counting system, but the philosophy is simple: bet more when you have the edge and less when the house has the edge. That means you can profit while winning fewer bets than the casino!

And, if you don’t fully commit and use a card-counting strategy, at least you’ll learn Basic Strategy and drive the house edge down to about half a percent. From there, you can probably raise your bets slightly during a winning streak and cut down to the minimum when the cards run wrong and still clear a profit while losing more hands than the dealer.

EXAMPLE THREE PLAY SPORTS BETS DOGS

You’ll win more wagers betting on the favorites in Arizona casino sports books. But you’re unlikely to book an overall profit because you’ll have to lay 1.5 or 2 to 1 on those wagers, mostly because people bet on their favorite teams and drive the odds out of whack.

To win consistently without devoting hours to scouting teams, your best option is to consider home-dog NFL teams. Taking the points is usually best. If you bet the money line (your dog must win!), you won’t win as many bets, but at least the payoff will be nice. If the payoff isn’t solid – pass.

EXAMPLE FOUR QUIT EARLY

Alright, this example is a bit dubious. In other games, the casino has the edge and eventually catches up, and we walk away busted if we chase our dreams all night long.

If you get ahead in the first hour, you’ve probably won more hands than you’ve lost. It’s never wrong to quit a winner! $

TABLE GAMES

TABLE GAMES

BUSTER BLACKJACK

Is This Bet A Good One?

When playing Blackjack at your favorite casino, you have probably noticed that they offer side bets in addition to your Blackjack wager. This month we will take a look at the Buster Blackjack wager. This bet wins if the dealer breaks his Blackjack hand. The payout depends on how many cards the dealer takes to break his hand. Is this a good bet?

If you are a perfect Basic Strategy player, the casino has about a 0.57% advantage over you, meaning that you would lose 0.57 cents for every $100 dollars you put in play over the long run. If you play the Buster Blackjack wager it puts your disadvantage for the wager to around 4.7%. That’s quite a difference! I have friends that always play side bets every hand, then can’t figure out why they never win. I personally never play side bets because beating the game of Blackjack is hard enough without adding an additional way to lose.

The dealer only breaks about once every four hands on average. When they do break, they will bust with three or four cards about 25% of the time which has a payout of two to one. If you were wagering the Buster bet every hand for $10 it would cost you $40 to get one payout of $20 on average, losing $20 per four hands in addition to your Blackjack wager. That’s not a very good wager!

There are some payouts with the Buster bet that pay larger amounts but the chances of seeing the dealer bust using more than four cards are slim to none. For example, the chances of the dealer taking five cards to break is .0204. Six cards to break is .00264. Seven cards to break is .00021. And eight cards to break is .00001. I hate to be the flat tire on your hayride but the recreational player would probably never see an eight card bust. While it would be fun to hit a large payout, the average player doesn’t realize just how rare these events are when placing these wagers.

It is interesting to note that the casino edge changes on the Buster bet when different cards are removed from the deck. Removing an Ace, Two or Three changes the casino edge to .05112. While removing a Five through King changes the edge to

around .0453. If you are dead set on playing the Buster bet it is a good idea to notice what cards have been removed from the deck. If there are no Aces left in the remaining cards to be played it would be difficult for the dealer to break with more

If you are a recreational player you might want to rethink about ning session. I have had many playing sessions where I was the only player who came out ahead because I was the only player at the table who wasn’t playing side bets.

The average player who plays side bets is giving the casino a 25% advantage over their play. The casinos use side bets to boost their profits on their Blackjack games. If you have been losing at the Blackjack tables, try skipping the side bets and see what a difference it makes to your bottom line. $

GAMING GIVES $2 BILLION

Arizona Indian Gaming Nears $2 Billion In Contributions To Arizona Benefits Fund

In a press conference at the Arizona State Capitol, the Arizona Indian Gaming Association (AIGA) announced that the state is expected to reach $2 billion in contributions to the Arizona Benefits Fund by the second quarter of 2023, generated through Tribal gaming revenue.

“Through Tribal gaming, we have been able to fund vital programs essential to advancing and improving the lives of all Arizonans,” said Robert Miguel, chairman of the Ak-Chin Indian Community and for AIGA. “It’s difficult to imagine what our state would look like without the significant contributions of our Indian gaming communities.”

The Arizona Benefits Fund helps to support instructional improvement in schools, trauma and emergency care, tourism, and wildlife conservation throughout the state. Arizona Department of Gaming reported $27,607,589 in contributions for the first quarter of fiscal 2023, bringing the total amount of Tribal contributions to over $1.98 billion since 2004.

In addition to Chairman Miguel, Chairwoman Sherry Cordova of the Cocopah Tribe and Arizonans for Tribal Government Gaming, Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs, and City of Glendale Councilman Jamie Aldama offered remarks, with many Tribal and city leaders in attendance.

“I was honored to be at this historic event, which marked an important milestone in the State of Arizona’s relationship with Tribal gaming. There can be no doubt that this partnership has had lasting, positive impact in the areas that are important to the growth and sustainability of our communities,” said Governor Hobbs.

The impending milestone was celebrated with a cultural presentation by the Hualapai Tribe, color guard posting by American Legion Post #114 Bushmasters of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, and blessing by Councilman Edward Wemytewa of the Pueblo of Zuni. Governor Hobbs, City of Glendale Councilman Jamie Aldama, and Tribal leaders spoke about the importance of Tribal gaming and its successes.

“This was a significant event that brought to life the impact that Tribal gaming has had all across our great state,” said Chairwoman Cordova. “We are grateful to Governor Hobbs and the city and Tribal leaders who took the time to share their stories and show their support for Tribal gaming in Arizona.”

Unregulated “Skill” Machines Are Games Of Chance, Say Two-Thirds Of Americans Familiar With Them

Among Americans familiar with unregulated “skill” machines, a decisive majority recognize that these devices are games of chance, not skill, according to new American Gaming Association data. Two-thirds (65%) of those who are familiar with “skill” games say they are no different from slot machines where wins are based on random chance, and that even a skilled player cannot reliably influence the outcome.

“Unregulated machine manufacturers have built their businesses by duping consumers and small businesses while avoiding taxes, oversight and consumer protections,” said AGA President and CEO Bill Miller. “These results are further evidence that Americans see these machines as a threat that should be eliminated, not regulated.”

“Skill” machines are often found in convenience stores, bars, strip malls and other community establishments, operating

outside of the regulated gaming marketplace. Previous AGA research estimates that 580,651 unregulated gambling machines exist in the U.S., constituting 40% of all gambling machines nationwide.

The survey also reveals those familiar with “skill” games overwhelmingly view the machines as negative influences in their communities: 71% say “skill” machines lack the player protections that are available to players in casinos. 64% agree “skill” machines are too easily accessible to kids. 56% say “skill” games increase the risk of crime and endanger employees and customers of businesses where installed. Upon learning that “skill” machines are taxed at a far lower rate and lack the same regulatory oversight as casino slot machines, twothirds of Americans familiar with “skill” games (64%) express concern about the presence of such devices in their communities. $

With a career-spanning collection of gold and platinum certifications, ten No.1 singles and over 2.5 billion U.S. ondemand streams, Jake Owen has ascended to stardom as a mainstay country staple.

Delivering a fresh set of beach-ready hits, his 16-track, seventh studio album, Loose Cannon, dropped June 23 via Big Loud Records.

Known for his laid-back style and genre defining hits like “Barefoot Blue Jean Night,” “American Country Love Song,” and “Alone with You,” Owen's last album, Greetings From…Jake, delivered three No.1 hits – “Made For You,” “Homemade” and "I Was Jack (You Were Diane)" –and a top five smash “Down to the Honkytonk.”

The ACM award winner wrapped 2022 on his raved-about Up There Down Here headline tour, with more dates to come in 2023. $

Country star Gary Allan is returning to Desert Diamond s Diamond Center on Saturday, December 9, 2023. Tickets start at $35 and can be purchased through Etix and at Desert Diamond Casino’s Box Office. Doors open at 7 p.m.; show starts at 8 p.m.

With the allure of a modern-day outlaw, Gary Allan has won over fans, peers and critics with his signature blend of smoldering vocals, rebellious lyrics and raucous live performances. While becoming a force on the country music scene, Allan has remained true to his artistic voice each step of the way. Ruthless, Allan’s first new album in eight years, was released in June 2021. The 13-song album features songs produced by Mark Wright, Tony Brown, Greg Droman, Jay Joyce, and Allan himself. His previous album, Set You Free, topped the Billboard 200 (Pop Chart), a career first for Allan.

The California native released his first album, Used Heart for Sale, in 1996 and since then has released eight additional studio albums selling over 8 million albums, been certified platinum on three back-to-back albums, and been certified gold five times. Allan has five No. 1 hits at country radio, 14 Top 10 hits to his credit and amassed over 2.8 billion total streams.

Treena Parvello, Director of Government and Public Relations for the Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise, said, “Southern Arizona fans love to see Gary Allan live at the Diamond Center! We’re excited to once again welcome him back.” $

Jokes & Quotes

Research shows that laughing stimulates the immune system and may help prevent or reverse some medical conditions.

An old lady, let’s call her Mary, walked in to the bank in her small town. She demanded to see the manager to make a large cash deposit. The manager, James, saw her into his office and asked, “And just how much will you be depositing?” Mary responded with a grin, “Just over half a million in cash.” James exclaimed, “Pardon me, that’s a lot of cash. Federal regulations require me to ask how you accumulated all that cash?” “Gambling,” Mary answered. Curious, James asked, “How?” “A little of this, a little of that, just betting on things.” Intrigued, James replied, “Can you give me an example?”

After a brief pause, Mary said, “Look, I’ll bet you twenty large your balls will be perfect cubes by noon tomorrow when I deposit my half-mil.” James couldn’t believe what he had just heard, “You want to bet $20,000 that my balls will become cubes?” “So are we on for noon tomorrow?” asked Mary. “You bet!” said James. All night, James couldn’t sleep, he kept checking every 30 minutes just to make sure his package was still as round as ever.

At noon, Mary walked into James’ office with her attorney Greg and politely said, “James, I’m here to deposit the half-mil, Greg has it all in my suitcase. He’s just here to supervise the deposit as it is cash and quite a lot of money. But before we go any further, we need to settle up.” “Oh, we need to settle up! You owe me twenty grand!”

“James, I understand, but I’ll need to verify for myself. Now be a good boy and unzip your pants,” said Mary. James displayed his package, still round. Mary put her hand out and made her inspection confirming the fact. “Greg, you owe me $50,000,” said Mary.
