EDITOR’S NOTE

THANKSGIVING BUFFETS No Cooking & Cleaning This Year!

M

ost casino buffets have reopened just in time to enjoy a delicious Thanksgiving holiday meal at your favorite casino. Grab the family for a day of relaxation and fun and leave the stress behind. Life has become hectic enough, so why deal with all the long lines at the grocery stores, the cooking, the before cleaning, the after cleaning, everybody’s dietary restrictions (I’m a vegetarian I don’t eat turkey, I’m on Keto I only eat turkey)? From the Eagles Buffet at Casino Arizona in the Phoenix Valley to the Festa Buffet at Casino Del Sol in Tucson, you’ll be sure to find all your traditional holiday favorites and more! Did you know that the oh-so American tradition of the All-You-Can-Eat buffet at dirt cheap prices started in Las Vegas? Naturally! Herb McDonald, born in Alberta, Canada in 1919, was working as a publicist at one of the first hotels on the Strip, the El Rancho Vegas. The story goes that late one night in the mid 1940s Herb prepared a spread of bread, butter, cheese, cold cuts and fruits across the bar for his hungry customers playing late into the night. It was such a hit that Herb eventually evolved the menu into a 24-Hour All-You-Can-Eat “Buckaroo Buffet” which included not only cold cuts but seafood, salads, an assortment of main entrees and dessert. So for just $1, people could choose from “every possible variety of hot and cold entrees to appease the howling coyote in your innards,” according to a flyer advertising the buffet. El Rancho lost money on the Buckaroo but, of course, gained it all back and more on the casino floor. Soon, other establishments along the Strip were copying Herb’s idea. Today, you’re not truly a casino if you don’t have a buffet. Have A Lucky Month!

PLAYERS TALK

AMAZING LITTLE PLASTIC MARVELS Don’t Ever Leave Home Without Them!

My friend has been on my case about not using a player’s card for a very long time. She even convinced me to write in to you. I have been going to the casino for over 25 years now and I have never once used a player’s card. I just don’t want to give out my personal information to the casinos and I’ve heard so many people complain that when they use their cards the machines don’t pay out. I’m stubborn but I’m willing to listen to what you have to say. Dee Hogue—Phoenix, AZ Dee, you should never ever play at a casino without using a player’s card! You have to understand that the casinos are competing against each other for your business. The incentives they provide to you in the form of free merchandise, rooms, food, entertainment, and cash back are just opportunities to entice you to come back and play at their casino. You’re missing out on so many goodies by not playing with a card! The bad rap that player’s cards have received is unfortunate. These amazing little plastic marvels were first established in Atlantic City in the mid 1980s as a way of rewarding the slot players for their continued loyalty. Up until then, only the wellknown high roller table game players were given special treatment by casino personnel. As revenue from slot machines started to increase, so did the importance of keeping the slot players happy and coming back. So, with the invention of card readers, slot machine enthusiasts were able to get in on the reward system. The actual slot machine games don’t recognize if player’s cards have been inserted and therefore the performance of the games cannot be compromised. The random number generator in a slot machine is the ONLY factor that determines the outcome of every spin. The card readers, ticket printers, and bill validators are all separate mechanisms that are part of a slot machine designed to perform independent functions and one has absolutely nothing to do with the other! Trust us! Every single member of the AZ Gaming Guide team has worked for a slot machine manufacturer designing, programming and testing the games, so we know! Playing with a player’s card will have absolutely no effect on a game’s outcome.

And, the most intimate information on the very short registration form that casinos care to know about you is your address, so they can send you promotional material geared towards your interests, but you can even request to have your name taken off the mailing lists! Dee, play with a card and start enjoying all the freebies that you have earned because you deserve them! I just turned 21 last month and I can now go to the casinos which I’m super excited about. Me and my friend love your magazine. We went to all your back issues and read like twenty of them. They’re really interesting. Question, do you think it’s worth for us to get a casino card? We have other friends that play and they say to not bother because we won’t be spending enough money on slots to make enough points. Stacey & Trish—Via Email Hi Stacey & Trish, Happy Birthday and welcome to the gaming world! Casino gaming is a very exciting entertainment option! Thank you for your interest in our magazine. We’re very thrilled to have you as a new fan. Please make sure to sign up for our monthly e-news and you’ll get the magazine directly into your inbox along with other exciting offers. We’d love to see you on our social channels as well! As far as your question about player’s cards, casino industry statistics show that the number one reason casino visitors aren’t using players cards is because they think they don’t spend enough money to earn anything. The biggest misconception amongst gamblers is that players club cards are only worthwhile for the big bettors. What players forget to take into account is the aggregate total amount of ALL the wins they get while playing a slot machine. It’s not uncommon for a player to put $20 into a slot machine and play through $200! The card reader records all the money played through the machine and not just the initial money inserted by the player. Therefore, points do add up very quickly during a play session, even when placing low bets! It doesn’t take long to build up enough points for a couple free buffet tickets and some free play. The benefits of playing with a card start to be realized after your first casino trip. Your friends that are not playing with cards will definitely be envious of you and all your freebies! $

Thank you to our readers for your questions and comments, we appreciate you! Write us at Editor@AZGamingGuide.com or by mail at Editor, AZ Gaming Guide, PO BOX 20636, Mesa, AZ, 85277.

THE ILLUSION OF CONTROL Games Of Chance Pitted Against Our Ego

A

rizona casinos offer us all the opportunity to get our kicks playing games of chance. While that chance is non-specific, we can win or lose. No illusions there. We love to gamble. But it’s best to always keep our wits about us. We know we’re not in control when we make repeated trips to the ATM, drink too much or refuse to quit playing while winning or losing as the hours pass. Like many things, moderation can be the key to fun and fit survival. Sometimes, I want to feel in control, in the thick of the action. Other times, I want to hide in the back of the casino and play a slot machine where no one can see me, just pushing the buttons. It’s such a guilt-free pleasure. But what about skill-based games? Do Casinos Offer Skill-Based Games? All table games require skill, whether your finesse comes from betting strategies and patience, actual card-tracking at blackjack, or math and player psychology at poker. You’ll do best at those games if you understand the rules and principles of your gambling, which means the games themselves and your specific gaming psychology. Until recently, Arizona casinos offered only slots and card games while many players longed for expanded gaming. Now that we’ve got games like craps and roulette, it’s essential not to fool ourselves like we often do at video poker. Video poker is universally popular because it holds the illusion of player control. Yes, we can pick and choose which cards to discard, but that doesn’t automatically get us a four-of-a-kind or a royal flush. The outcome isn’t preset, but the house odds are! Craps & Roulette – The Ultimate Test Of Will Roulette has been a gaming favorite for nearly 200 years; craps about half that long. So what’s the attraction? For starters, both games are easy to learn and play. They both offer even-money bets that pay often and harder-to-hit bets that pay 30-1 at craps and 35-1 at roulette, and both can make you think you are in control.

16 Arizona Gaming Guide | November 2023 | azgamingguide.com

Believing you are in control of a game can make you feel omnipotent. Just ask a poker pro. It can lead to your biggest scores but presents a delicate balance. The ultimate satisfaction of gaming greatness is tenuously tethered to a game of chance and pride. If you play craps, there will be times you can’t help but roll the numbers you want. It happens, and it’s great. But are you able to control the dice? Double up and raise your bets while it lasts. Just don’t let ego override the controls and smash your moment. As for roulette, sometimes it seems almost supernatural when you are wagering on individual numbers, and your mind keeps telling you to add this number and that – and they keep hitting. At 35-1, you’ll clean up quite nicely during a nearly psychic session. But where do those instincts come from? Mind control or good luck? Nobody knows, but no session of great guesses lasts forever. I load up around a specific number – four corners to start, adding splits and straight up when they hit. Then I play until the feelings subside or I lose a few stacks and head to the cashier. Who’s in control then? $ Writer Al Moe has worked in the casino industry for many years. He has lived and worked in Las Vegas, Reno, and Lake Tahoe. He also attended the University of Nevada, Reno. He is an avid writer and blogger. His book, “Vegas and the Mob," is available online at Amazon.com. He is also the proud father of four beautiful girls.

NO CLUE A Sorry Sight At Blackjack Tables

I

recently went to a casino to play some Blackjack on a Monday night. I like to go to this casino during the week late at night when it’s not so crowded. At the table I chose to play at were two younger gentlemen who had absolutely no idea on how to play the game of Blackjack! They didn’t know how to signal to the dealer that they wanted to hit, or stay on their hand. They didn’t even know what basic strategy was. Their way of playing was to hit every hand until they got over eighteen or bust, regardless of what the dealer was showing for an up card. You would think before someone put their hard earned money into play they would want to have some idea how the game is played, especially in this economy. I am not one to tell players how to play their hands, I figure it’s their money, let them play however they want. But I hadn’t seen a beating like that by the dealer since a man stuck a banana in his pants and someone turned a monkey loose! I finally stepped in and helped them play the game correctly. I happened to have a copy of my book How To Become A Blackjack Jedi in my car which I donated to them in the hopes it would help them with their Blackjack play. By the end of the evening they were happy because they made a little money and had a pretty good handle on the game. The game of Blackjack is a lot more fun when it’s played correctly. It’s worth mentioning there are some little things that you as a player can do to give yourself a better chance at having a winning experience. Before I sit down at a Blackjack table I “scout” the tables. What I am looking for is a winning table. Blackjack tables tend to have similar results. If everyone is winning at the table chances are if you sit down you will win as well. If you walk up to a Blackjack table and one player has a single chip left and another has two chips, chances are it’s a losing table and if you sit down you will probably lose too.

18 Arizona Gaming Guide | November 2023 | azgamingguide.com

When you start to play, if you lose four hands in a row, sit out and wait until they shuffle or change tables. Blackjack is a streaky game, you will save yourself a lot of money if you recognize a bad streak instantly. Did you know that seventy percent of all the money you will win at the game of Blackjack comes from the hands of twenty and Blackjack? If you are pushing or losing the hand of twenty and pushing on Blackjack, find a different table because I can tell you from experience the table you are at isn’t going to be a winning table for you! Set realistic goals and loss limits. I have seen way too many times a player hit their profit goal almost instantly, then stick around because they are not tired of playing just to lose it all back almost as fast, instead of walking out a winner. Keep a little notebook with all your wins and losses so you can be honest with yourself. It will give you a realistic picture of how good your actual game is, and help you identify any potential problems. Above all, keep your emotions out of your game. If you get emotionally charged you tend to make bad decisions, so keep a clear head. $ Writer TJ Jorgensen has been a professional Blackjack player for several decades. He is well known for his tournament play and has beaten some of the top tournament players in the world. He has also won the World Series Of Blackjack. His newest book “How To Become A Blackjack Jedi” is available online at Amazon.com.

A POSITIVE BET: Embracing Corporate Social Responsibility

C

orporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is the idea that a company should play a positive role in the community and consider all business decisions' environmental and social impact. The concept of CSR has become incredibly popular over the years, challenging the business world to be active contributors to the well-being of society and the environment. The entertainment industry is no different. Casinos like Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino are demonstrating their commitment to CSR and showing how ethical considerations and community support can thrive even in the gambling world.

Promote Responsible Gambling A cornerstone of casino CSR efforts revolves around responsible gambling initiatives. Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino’s management partner Caesars Entertainment has simple and unequivocal goals regarding responsible gambling. While the organization wants everyone visiting the property to have fun, they are also prepared to recognize and support guests struggling with excessive gambling. The casino fosters a healthier gambling culture by taking proactive measures like implementing selfexclusion programs, setting betting limits, and providing resources for those seeking assistance with gambling addiction. Community Engagement and Empowerment Successful CSR initiatives extend beyond the casino floor and reach the heart of the surrounding communities. Harrah’s AkChin Casino’s HERO program is a team member-based volunteer program in which Harrah's staff and their families make noteworthy and visible contributions by donating their time, skills, expertise, and compassion to dozens of nonprofits and volunteer projects throughout the community. The casino also collaborates and supports nonprofit partners and charitable causes that align with the organization's values. The casino strengthens ties with residents and creates a positive legacy beyond casino operations by actively supporting and participating in local community efforts.

“The HERO program has allowed our casino and our employees to support meaningful causes near and dear to our hearts,” says HERO Committee Chair Barbara Achten. "Our CSR initiatives foster a culture of team-building and employee engagement that helps them connect more personally. I'm proud to be a part of the effort." Environmental Sustainability Environmental sustainability is another vital aspect of casino CSR. By integrating sustainable practices, casinos contribute to the fight against climate change and set an example for others in the entertainment space to follow. Environmental stewardship is an essential pillar of Harrah's AkChin Casino's Code of Commitment, as the property recognizes the importance of being responsible stewards of the environment. The CodeGreen committee ensures the property demonstrates its energy conservation and environmental sustainability leadership. Harrah's Ak-Chin Casino CodeGreen Chair April Stovall says, “Our Code of Commitment is a public pledge to employees, guests and the community-at-large that our organization will consistently explore and implement new ways to reduce the environmental footprint.” (Continued on page 22)

(Continued from page 21)

Many of the property’s initiatives are inspired by the Ak-Chin Indian Community's deep roots in farming, agriculture and passion for protecting and sustaining land, air and water. In addition to its focus on reducing the property's carbon footprint, efforts also focus on energy savings, water consumption, and recycling. Among the many ways Harrah’s Ak-Chin is committed to sustainability include: •Investing in sustainable practices that increase energy efficiency and water conservation; •Commitment to measurable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions; and •Promoting recycling and waste reduction throughout the property, including the casino, hotel and restaurants. Employee Welfare and Development A responsible casino extends its CSR efforts to its employees. Ensuring fair wages, providing a safe and inclusive work environment, and offering opportunities for professional growth are crucial components of an employee-centered CSR approach. This not only enhances job satisfaction and productivity but also contributes to the overall economic prosperity of the community. One of the ways Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino supports its employees is through the SAVVY and SALUTE Business Impact Groups (BIG). SAVVY is a BIG focused on women's empowerment, support, and advancement within the company. The SAVVY BIG is for team members and their peer supporters who have common goals and are committed to Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino’s diversity and inclusion strategy. The SALUTE BIG actively seeks to bring together team members who are Veterans and Veteran allies who embrace the core values of duty, honor and selfless service. The purpose is to cultivate a diverse and inclusive culture through grassroots efforts to assist Veterans in various ways, including fundraisers, donation drives and volunteer opportunities. The goals of each BIG are to: •Promote cultural awareness and education; •Develop team members personally and professionally; •Drive innovation and strategic business initiatives; •Support diverse team member recruitment and retention; and •Foster a positive company image in our communities.

Transparency and Accountability For a casino to be genuinely committed to CSR, transparency and accountability are paramount. Publicly disclosing CSR efforts, including economic impact and societal contributions, are essential for promoting authenticity and credibility. Each year, Caesars Entertainment and Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino release a Market Summary Sheet that discloses the footprint, community engagement effort, economic impact and societal contributions. While casinos are a place of entertainment, organizations like Harrah's Ak-Chin Casino also acknowledge their role in society beyond entertainment and monetary gains. By embracing Corporate Social Responsibility, casinos actively contribute to the well-being of their patrons, employees, and communities while reducing their environmental impact. Through these efforts, casinos showcase that they can play a positive role in society while offering an exciting and enjoyable experience. As more casinos embrace CSR, they are redefining the industry and demonstrating that a responsible bet can be the most rewarding. For more info visit HarrahsAkChin.com. $

AZ Dept. Of Gaming Reports $42.4 Million In Tribal Gaming Contributions for Q1, FY 2024

The Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG) just announced $42,400,105 in tribal gaming contributions will be going to the Arizona Benefits Fund for the first quarter of Fiscal Year (FY) 2024. This amount represents an approximate 2% increase when compared to the same quarter of FY 2023. “Tribal gaming remains integral to the future success of Arizona, with over $1.8 billion contributed to the Arizona Benefits Fund since its inception,” said Jackie Johnson, Cabinet Executive Officer, ADG. “Not only do tribal gaming dollars go directly to tribal communities, they contribute to educational improvement, healthcare services, tourism, wildlife conservation, and more for both the state and its tribal communities.” The Arizona Benefits Fund receives 88% of the tribal gaming contributions, providing significant dollars to support instructional improvement in schools, trauma and emergency care, tourism, and wildlife conservation throughout the state. Per the Arizona Tribal-State Gaming Compact, Tribes with casinos also contribute a percentage of their Class III gross gaming revenue to cities, towns, and counties. Total tribal contributions to the Arizona Benefits Fund in addition to cities, towns, and counties in the state has amounted to nearly $2.1 billion since FY 2004. Currently, there are 25 Class III casinos in Arizona, which ADG regulates in partnership with the Arizona tribes. Established by the Arizona State Legislature in 1995, the ADG is the state regulatory agency for tribal gaming along with racing and pari-mutuel/simulcast wagering, event wagering/ fantasy sports and unarmed combat sports. Desert Diamond Casinos Hosts Ceremony To Top Off Steelwork On New Facility Near Loop 303 & Northern Parkway

Recently, the Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise (TOGE) held a topping off ceremony for the construction of its new Desert Diamond Casino facility located near Loop 303 & Northern Parkway. The event marks a major milestone in construction as TOGE begins to close out the final sequence of steel for the new $450 million casino.

The property for the new facility is located on 80 acres of reservation land in unincorporated Maricopa County, west of Glendale, Arizona. This land has already been taken into trust by the federal government as required by law, in a process similar to what was done for the Desert Diamond Casino West Valley facility.

TOGE broke ground on the project in April 2023, with a 19month construction timeline. The new facility will feature a 184,000 square-foot casino floor with 900 Class III slot machines, poker room, retail sportsbook, and table games including blackjack, craps, roulette, and baccarat, as well as dining and other amenities.

Mike Bean, CEO of the Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise said, “We are very proud of what has been accomplished so far by our construction team. It will be a beautiful, first-class facility that complements the fastest-growing region of the Phoenix Valley. We are moving quickly to complete this economic development project that is creating opportunity for the West Valley and the Tohono O’odham Nation.”

JCJ Architecture led the design of the new Desert Diamond Casino, which will eventually expand to include a hotel, conference center, an outdoor pool and recreational amenities, and an amphitheater and event lawn space. Construction is being headed by the Hunt / Penta Joint Venture as general contractor and will create over 5,500 construction jobs. Once completed, the full-scale facility will employ more than 1,000 people. Verlon Jose, Chairman of the Tohono O’odham Nation said, “Today is a major milestone for the Tohono O’odham Nation. We have come a long way in building a more prosperous future for our people and the West Valley, but just like this new casino, we still have much further to go. The Nation will continue to work closely with our friends and partners in the region for the benefit of all our communities.”

SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker

EMPLOYEES MAY SEEM HARSH Let’s Assume They Mean Well

W

ow, you’re still here! This was a comment that was snorted towards one of our readers by an employee at a local casino recently. According to this lady, who wished to remain anonymous, she was belittled for having been at the casino for longer than this particular employee felt was appropriate. “My husband and I were really having a great time at [a casino]. We had met up with some friends for lunch and then we were enjoying the rest of our afternoon playing some games and having fun. Until, that is, the employee made me feel like I had a gambling problem for being there so long. I don’t believe that spending a day at the casino every now and then is so awful or wrong. I just don’t understand why she had to be so rude. At first I thought she was joking, but it quickly became apparent that she wasn’t!” Carolyn Stevens was also disappointed when she was told by a casino employee that it didn’t seem like it was her day and she should just go home. “He told me that he was watching me play several different machines and not win anything and that if my luck didn’t turn around soon I should stop playing. At first I was surprised that I wasn’t aware he was observing me play and then I got angry because I didn’t think it was any of his business.” I still remember a hand-written letter I received from a lady years ago who said a casino employee that was with the drop crew told her they had to empty the cash boxes in the games so that people like her could fill them back up again. Wow! The lady was there to meet her friends at the casino for breakfast and she arrived early so she sat down to play. She was so angry after the comment and the tone the employee used when he talked to her that she had breakfast with her friends and left. She decided to never visit that casino again. Most casino employees do mean well. There have been plenty of times I’ve heard slot attendants tell people, “Don’t give it all back” after they’ve done a hand pay. I truly believe these words are not intended to be offensive although they can definitely be misconstrued. Since the slot floor takes up a predominant space in every casino and therefore has the largest number of players, it’s the slot floor personnel who interact with a majority of the casino customers. And, since most gaming enthusiasts are a very superstitious bunch, comments that are truly well-

34 Arizona Gaming Guide | November 2023 | azgamingguide.com

intended can be misinterpreted. Based on the feedback we’ve received from our readers over the years, there are certain remarks that slot attendants and other casino employees should avoid saying to players. It essentially boils down to any reference to their luck or their bankroll. Are you winning? Are you up? Are you down? Even the unassuming good luck idiom can be unappreciated if the recipient feels they have now been jinxed! The employees at the casinos want all their patrons to have a good time and leave happy. However, it’s not to say that every bushel doesn’t have a bad apple or two. It’s understandable why a slot attendant might tell a patron not to give all the money back if they’ve won, but there’s also the way in which it’s said, the tone that is used and the implications. Also, we’re all human and prone to having bad days. If a casino employee ever makes a remark to you that makes you feel uncomfortable, the first step is to directly communicate to the individual that the comment was not appreciated by letting them know they need to be more sensitive to their paying customers. And, if the behavior continues there is always the next step of informing a supervisor or a player’s club representative. $

I found myself in a pub in Europe. A group of American tourists came in. One of the Americans said, in a loud voice, “I hear you Europeans think you’re great drinkers. I bet $5,000 that no one here can drink 20 pints in 30 minutes.” The bar was silent, but the American noticed one European leaving. No one took up the bet. Forty minutes later, the European who left returned and asked, “Hey Yank, is your bet still on?” “Sure,” said the American, “20 pints in 30 minutes for a bet of $5,000.” “Grand,” replied the European, “so pour the pints and start the clock.” It was very close, but the European consumed the last drop with seconds to spare. “OK Yankee, pay up!” he said. “I’m happy to pay; here’s your money,” said the shocked American. “But tell me, when I first offered the wager, I saw you leave. Where did you go?” “Well sir,” replied the European, “$5,000 is a lot of money to a man like me, so I went to the pub across the road to see if I could do it.”
