37 YEARS OF SUCCESS
Indian Gaming Tradeshow & Convention
Entering its 37th year, the Indian Gaming Tradeshow & Convention has established itself not only as the premier event for the Indian Gaming Industry but as the figurative heartbeat of Native American success.
The largest gathering of tribal leaders and casino executives in the country, the Indian Gaming Tradeshow & Convention is both the meeting place where the community gathers to learn, network and exchange industry-specific ideas and a cultural celebration of success, strength and self-reliance.
This year, the convention and tradeshow will be held in the Anaheim Convention Center on April 8 through 11 in Anaheim, California. The exhibit hall will be open on the 10th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on the 11th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. As the tradeshow is not open to the public, our team has regularly visited IGA since the very early 2000s when most slots were still mechanical reels, video slots were just beginning to emerge, touchscreens were a novelty, attention was drawn to games not with frame lights but with backlit (using fluorescent light bulbs!) decals placed on glass, and Wheel of Fortune dominated casino floors. As our readers know, a lot has changed and we are always interested to see what new games and technology are about to hit the casino floors in Arizona soon.
Members of our team will be at #IGA2024 this year and we can’t wait to report back what we experience. In the meantime, we can treat our readers to an IGA 2024 sneak peek on page 08 from Bluberi (Booth 1228), on page 20 from Everi (Booth 336), on page 12 from Gaming Arts (Booth 1460), and on page 26 from Interblock (Booth 1654)!
The Indian Gaming Association is a non-profit organization of sovereign tribal nations with other non-voting associate members representing organizations, tribes and business engaged in tribal gaming enterprises around the country. As the go-to resource for the community on education, legislation and public policy issues, Indian Gaming Association works to advance the social, economic and political success of its members and the Indian community, at large. WE ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS ON...
Lost Tickets, Progressive Jackpots & Royal Flushes!
Q: I found your answer interesting in [a recent] issue where someone asked if a “found” casino ticket could be taken. My experience has left me with an appreciation for turning in a "found" ticket to a casino employee. I was recently gambling in Laughlin and pulled my card and left the machine to go have lunch. I walked around the casino for a few minutes locating my friends so we could dine together then it dawned on me I failed to retrieve my ticket for $57 from the machine. I headed over to the machine and pressed the cash out button but nothing happened and the display showed it had paid the $57. I was heartbroken to know that my lack of attention cost me $57. This put a damper on what should have been a fun day. Approximately an hour later I sat at a machine and inserted my card and began playing. Within a few minutes two casino workers came over to me and asked if I had left a ticket in a machine and I said “Yes, for $57!” They thanked me for playing at their casino and for using my player card which allowed them to locate me when I inserted the card again. Then they handed me my ticket for $57! OMG! That made my day. They explained that as they walk the floor they pay attention to credits still in a machine where no one is playing. They pull those tickets and if the amount is sizable they attempt to locate the party that left the ticket. This experience reinforced why I always use my players card and I never touch a ticket that has been “left behind”. I know what it feels like to have a lost ticket returned.
Pamela Siek Mesa, AZ via email
A: Pamela, that is just a fantastic story about customer service! We are so pleased to hear your ticket was returned to you. And yes, yet another reason to play with a Players Club Card.
Q: Our local casino replaced a large number of progressive slot machines. Many of the displaced machines had a large progressive jackpot available. Many of them in excess of $10,000.00 and some higher than $20,000.00. What happens to those jackpots when they get replaced? After all, some of those machines had been installed for years and the jackpots rose from our losses.
Walt Obremski Green Valley, AZ via email
A: Truly an astute observation Walt! Arizona’s gaming regulations, which are enforced by the Arizona Department of Gaming, require all replaced progressive jackpots be transferred onto another progressive jackpot in the same casino.
But let’s dig into the specifics! If one of the slots being replaced has a current jackpot value of $12,345.67 and the reset value is $5,000.00 only the difference between the two numbers is transferred as players only contribute to what is referred to as the increment in the casino industry. So, for the progressive in the example only ($12,345.67 $5,000.00 = ) $7,345.67 is transferred onto another meter in the casino. By the way, the amount can be spread across multiple meters, or placed onto just one. You’ll have to pay attention to see where the money ends up. You could also just ask. The casino should be willing to tell you in the interest of fairness and transparency.
And don’t think of the amount in the progressive meter as money players have lost, it’s actually a fraction of all the wagers made. The progressive is transferring the money from wagers over to the meter which will be won by one or more people.
Q: Could you tell me if I hit a Royal Flush on machine A, should I keep playing machine A or would it be advantageous to move to machine B? What would the odds be per machine?
Ken Menez Somewhere In Arizona via email
A: Hi Ken! Great question! In my personal opinion, as a Royal Flush is the top win in video poker, I’m inclined to tell you to gather your win, enjoy the rest of your day at the casino with a nice meal, some entertainment or perhaps another enjoyable amenity and call it a day. But who am I to tell you what to do?
On the other hand (see how I snuck in that pun!), we at the AZ Gaming Guide have hit Royals back to back, multiple Royals on the same unit, at the same casino on the same day, even across multiple days at the same casino, at different casinos on the same day, and also on back to back days. Regardless, the odds of hitting a Royal Flush are roughly 1 in 40,000 to 45,000 hands depending on the game and pay table you play. The probabilities don’t change. What does change, guaranteed, is your luck. $

Devil’s Lock All In Exclusively On The New Beacon Elite By Bluberi
The Devil is back and he’s not alone, bringing mischievous fun with Devil’s Lock All In exclusively on Bluberi’s new premium hardware, Beacon Elite
Let’s begin with the introduction of the Beacon Elite, Bluberi’s first premium hardware to be placed throughout North America. Launching April 2024, this hardware holds true to Bluberi’s foundation of developing quality over quantity. Its unique player-minded design is the result of over 400 hours of research and development, with input and consultation from industry subject matter experts, casino operators, slot technicians and players. Extensive care and thought were put into how lighting, game placement and custom-made hardware makes this diamond configuration, a hybrid of pod and inline, a centerpiece for the casino floor.
The Beacon Elite’s sleek design will capture players’ interest with its bright overhead LED sign, and distinctive strata dividers that incorporate attention grabbing game elements. For additional visual aesthetics, Fresnel lenses are used to create a unique lighting effect that is exclusive to the Beacon Elite. For player comfort, the Beacon Elite was designed with ultra bright monitors with near-zero bezel, and best in class gel bash buttons.
The first game to launch on this premium hardware, is Devil’s Lock All In, a new addition to Bluberi’s award winning Lock series. Devil’s Lock All In offers fresh, new, game mechanics and features that include an expanded set of characters and reel activations that will surprise and delight players. Players will quickly fall in love with the Devil’s family, Big Momma, Boosting Twins, and the pot filling Pigs, and if you’re lucky enough, you’ll get a glimpse of the magical Unicorn Pigs! As a Cash-onReels game, credit values and prizes are unlocked with the help of the Devil landing in the center reel. And to enhance spins, the devilish Boosting Twins can add excitement with the opportunity of boosted prizes wins. In theme with Devil’s Lock, the infamous rewind feature returns, turning a losing spin into a potentially big win!
What makes Devil’s Lock All In a devilishly good time are the evolved bonus activations, featuring Free Game Spins, Big Momma Super Bonuses and true Mirror Free Games.
Free Games Spins – Free games are earned when the Devil coin tosses build up the pig pots, each rewarding the players with 6 free spins. During play, the Devil is locked in position, award-
ing the value of any coins or prizes that land with the opportunity to win more free games.
Big Momma Super Bonus Players will be delighted when Big Momma and the Devil land together, triggering an oversized reel set featuring credit prizes, progressives, and blue coins that turn into either mini or minor jackpots with the potential for multipliers.
Mirror Free Games – During the Cash on Reel base game play, players can be surprised with a chance for one of the pigs to transform into a Unicorn Pig. This happens when the Devil lands and throws a coin in the piggy pots. Any coin can land the free games, with a chance for the legendary Unicorn Pigs.
This highly anticipated hardware and game combination will make casino floors sizzle and be a new player favorite. To learn more visit Bluberi at IGA Booth 1228 or at Bluberi.com. $

HOW TO PLAY BIG “O” POKER
Position, Strategy & Why The River Is A Killer
A
long with the continued poker excitement in Arizona and the new poker room at Talking Stick Resort, there’s also a new variant capturing more players: Big “O.” The game’s been around for several years, and Gila River offered Big “O” on their mixed game tables, but it’s so popular now that you hardly find an Omaha High-Low split game on which it is based.
I grew up playing 7 Card Stud (which is nearly extinct now, like me), and I loved the high-low variety, where half the pot went to the player with the five lowest cards. The distinction was that flushes and straights counted for high, but not low – where there was an 8-or-lower rule - meaning you needed five different cards (no pairs), all eight or lower, and an ace was the lowest.
Omaha High-Low Split
Then came Omaha High-Low Split Poker. You get four cards to start, and the game plays like Texas Hold ‘Em with a flop, turn, and river. Unlike Hold ‘Em, you must use two of your own cards for a high hand where standard poker rules apply and two of your own cards for the eight-or-better low hand. Combining any two cards with three community cards makes a qualifying hand.
For those who have played this game, you know that straights and flushes are often beaten for high by full houses and quads. It’s exciting and fun. If there aren’t three community cards, eight or lower, the highest hand gets all the chips!
Big “O” Rules
Now that Big “O” is so popular, the game starts with each player receiving five cards. Again, you must use two cards for high and two for low, which can be the same, such as the times you make the best low (a wheel) of A-2-3-4-5. The worst low hand is 8-7-6-5-4. Many split pots are won with a six-low: 6-4-3-2-Ace beats a 6-5-3-2-Ace.
The main trick to winning at Big “O” is to remember that scooping (winning high and low) the pot is your primary goal. That means a two-way hand is best pre-flop. Hands with two Aces and three wheel cards (like A-A-2-3-4 and A-A-3-4-5) are powerful. They are even better if the Aces are suited to the small
cards. Other excellent starting cards are three low cards with an Ace and two face cards or any pair.
Like Hold ‘Em, position is important, but there’s nothing wrong with raising with the best-starting hands, including A-2-3-4-K suited or A-2-3 and a big pair. A-A-2-K-Q isn’t a great start. I’d rather have a redraw wheel card like A-A-2-3-K or A-2-3-K-Q. Toss one-way hands except for two pairs or three Broadway and a big pair.
Small straights and baby flushes rarely take big pots. Trash your four- and five-suited starts unless they contain a suited ace and two- or three-wheel cards. The nut flush will take many pots, but any pair on the board can kill your straight, flush, or baby set!
The river is a killer at Big “O.” Flopped straights and flushes don’t always win! It’s critical to flop or draw at a nut low or nut high hand, and a possible scoop is always best.
Although it sounds contrary, split pot games add to bankroll fluctuation. Be prepared! $

BLACKJACK MISINFORMATION
Does The Skill Level Of Other Players At The Table Affect You?
Ihave been playing a lot of Blackjack at our local casinos lately and at the Blackjack tables I have heard a lot of misinformation about Blackjack. To the novice player this information might sound logical but nothing could be further from the truth!
The number one misinformation I hear is that the skill levels of the other players at your table affect your results, especially if you have a bad player at third base (the last seat before the dealer). I've heard it a thousand times that a bad player at third base will cause all of the good players at the table to lose. I am here to tell you this is not true! Your skill level determines your results, not the play of other players.
The other misinformation I hear is when someone sees a lot of small cards dealt in previous rounds, they claim now is a good time to raise your bet. While that is what card counting is all about, just observing small cards in a particular hand doesn't yield any useful information. If you want useful information you would need to learn to count cards.
had an expectation of -0.289% (meaning the house had a slight advantage) and the second player had -0.288%, which is almost identical, as one would expect.
We have all heard the Mr. Know-It-All who tries to tell everyone how to play their hand and yells at the player who makes a play not consistent with basic strategy. He claims that this player is messing up the cards, or tries to get a player to take one for the team. My experience has been they don't know perfect basic strategy themselves. Blackjack is not a team sport and the bad play of others does not affect the long run house edge against other players at the table.
I have heard players at the table say that each one at the table has a significant role as to how the table will go. One player boldly claimed that players at first and third base determine the way the game will go. If they are bad players they will affect the odds at the table for everybody. I usually don't say anything when sitting at a table but I had to pipe in and said, "Where do you get your information? Certainly not from the Arizona Gaming Guide, because what you’re saying is totally false!" Bad play at the table doesn't affect anyone's odds.
My friend who works at a well-known University ran a simulation where two Blackjack players at the same table played 1.6 billion hands and played perfect basic strategy. The first player
In the second simulation of 1.6 billion hands, again two players at the same table with the first player playing perfect basic strategy and the player in the second position following basic strategy except for these plays: always hit 12-16, always double 9-11, split all pairs including 4,4 and 5,5 and never soft doubled. Essentially, the second player was making bad decisions.
The results were the perfect basic strategy player’s results were unchanged at -0.288% despite the terrible play of the other player at the table whose results were -11.26%, thus proving that a bad player at your table doesn't affect your results. They will help you as much as they hurt you, so it all evens out.
Remember that the next time Mr. Know-It-All tries to make the claim a bad player affects everyone's odds. $

“Not only is Jeff an incredible chef, he has a proven track record in providing culinary education, training cross-functional teams, and enriching dining experiences through exceptional service, culinary innovation and leadership,” said Jeffrey Duke, acting general manager of the We-Ko-Pa Casino Resort.

JOLIE SKWIERCZ—PROPERTY PASTRY CHEF
Experience Exceptional Pastries At We-Ko-Pa Casino Resort
To elevate guests’ dessert experiences in the We-Ko-Pa Casino Resort’s five fine-dining and casual dining outlets, the award-winning property is pleased to welcome back Jolie Skwiercz in her new role as Property Pastry Chef.
After serving as Pastry Chef at Oakland Hills Country Club –and Executive Pastry Chef at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown and Cancer Treatment Centers of America – Skwiercz first joined the We-Ko-Pa Casino Resort in November 2020 as Fine Dining Pastry Chef, helping set the culinary tone in the new state-of-the-art casino as it opened in the middle of the pandemic. For the next 15 months, she developed innovative, delicious desserts for Ember, the property’s award-winning steakhouse.
After leaving We-Ko-Pa for stints as Executive Pastry Chef at Café Monach and the Wrigley Mansion, Skwiercz returned to the AAA Four Diamond resort earlier this year. In her new, elevated position as Property Pastry Chef, she will be the creative force behind the pastry offerings throughout the 166,341 squarefoot casino – supervising a staff of five pastry chefs as they take the dessert experience to a new level at all five dining outlets.
“Pastry is my passion, and I take great pride in creating exceptional culinary experiences that leave lasting impressions,” said Skwiercz, a hands-on pastry chef who counts a five-foot-tall gingerbread Eiffel Tower among her most challenging achievements. “Quality and presentation are at the forefront of everything that I do, and my goal is to develop a diverse and exciting selection of desserts that cater to different tastes and dietary preferences, featuring the finest ingredients and prepared with precision and care.”
Skwiercz draws her inspiration from nature, letting the seasons guide her in incorporating the ripest fruit and seasonal spices in her creations. When designing a plated dessert, she gravitates toward a whimsical design using different textures of seasonal fruit and chocolate. Skwiercz is particularly fond of Cordillera, a single-origin chocolate made from one variety of cacao harvested in one region that contains special notes of flowers, fruits, caramel and walnuts.
“We’re thrilled to have Chef Jolie back, and can’t wait to see what she has planned in the coming months as she launches a
new dessert menu at Ember and mixes up the pastry offerings at our other dining outlets,” added Zac Gallo, Executive Director of Food and Beverage. “Her passion, expertise and attention to detail are evident in every pastry and dessert she creates, and our guests have some delicious concoctions in store for them.”

THE SCIENCE & IMPORTANCE OF PLAY
A Powerful Way To Stimulate The Brain
What do you think of when you hear someone talking, or see news about toys, games and play? Does your mind immediately go to the thought that this must be about children? If you answered yes, you could not be more incorrect.
Play is a universal and essential aspect of human development, learning and well-being for all ages. It is not only a source of joy and fun for children, but for adults too. Play is a powerful way of stimulating the brain, enhancing cognitive skills and fostering social and emotional competencies.
Play can take many forms, from physical activities to imaginative games, from solitary pursuits to collaborative projects and from structured rules to spontaneous improvisations. It can occur in the digital world or in real life. But, regardless of the type, play always involves curiosity, creativity, challenge and feedback, which are the key ingredients for effective learning.
Playing games and using toys have always been an effective way to develop skills. This continues to be true for the 21st century, including abilities such as critical thinking, problemsolving, collaboration and creativity. “Toys are a reflection of life and teach life skills,” says Jacob R. Miles III, who worked on the Easy Bake Oven, Girder and Panel and Play Doh, among other famous toys, as a young engineer at Kenner Toys.
It’s fascinating and almost revolutionary how toys have evolved over time, from simple objects made of natural materials, to complex electronic devices that can be programmed to do almost anything. While toys have always been an important part of childhood, they are also an important facet of adult life.
Games and toys can be an effective way to develop 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration and creativity. They can simulate adventure and keep our brains engaged and happy, which renders them a highly effective channel for learning.
Playing games and using toys can have a positive impact on mental health. As reported by the BBC, adults who demonstrate more playful personality traits also tend to be more motivated,
creative and spontaneous. There have even been linkages suggesting that people with more playful characteristics have generally lower blood pressure on average.
Play can also be a way to relieve stress and improve mood. A long-term study released in 2013 revealed that playing simple games can help a player improve their mood, relax, reduce their anxiety and manage difficult feelings like grief and anger. Other research found that playing nonviolent puzzle games for 30 minutes each day could help lessen symptoms of clinical depression particularly in older adults and that an hour spent playing popular multiplayer battle games improved one’s ability to focus, at least temporarily. In 2021, Oxford University researchers echoed these findings, similarly reporting that people who enjoyed long sessions of playing nonviolent games were more likely to report a sense of positive well-being.
In conclusion, regardless of age, culture, gender or personal preference, playing games and using toys can have positive impacts on mental health. Doing so helps improve mood, reduces anxiety, empowers us to manage difficult feelings and even potentially lowers blood pressure, so it’s essential to take some time out of our busy days and put play back on our calendars. And, last but not least, have some fun! $

Jokes & Quotes
Research shows that laughing stimulates the immune system and may help prevent or reverse some medical conditions.
A certain commercial farm was having great difficulty raising its egg productivity. Every suggestion they attempted failed to increase the output of its hens.
For one year they tried special feed formulas, hormones, minerals in the hens’ drinking water, piped in music (rock and classical), soft lights, ambient temperature variation, and even specially imported roosters, all with the same notable lack of success.
In desperation, they finally took the suggestion of an extension officer to hire a theoretical physicist.
After three more months of agonized waiting, the theoretician announced to the anxious farmers that he had the solution to their egg problem.
He strode up to the farmers and confidently began, “postulate a spherical chicken…”
