GAMING NEWS LONE BUTTE’S “LUCKY BREAK” HAS NEW HOST
TWO CENT SLOT PAYS WINNER $70,000!
CBS 5 morning show television personality and energetic weather man Paul Horton is the new host for Lucky Break at Lone Butte Casino. Horton assumes hosting duties of the local singing competition beginning with the March 20 broadcast. “Lucky Break” is a competition which positions Valley singers against one another for the chance at stardom. The winner of the competition receives $10,000 in cash and a trip for two to Las Vegas for an audition with major record label executives. The show airs every Saturday night at 11:35pm on CBS 5. Former host Brad Perry has taken on a new position at a San Diego station, but was happy to leave the show in Paul’s capable hands. Paul Horton will continue to report the weather on CBS 5’s morning show and be a part of the CBS 5 team while hosting Lucky Break at Lone Butte Casino.
Larry Cromwell recently became Lone Butte Casino’s newest winner when he hit a jackpot worth nearly $70,000 at a two cent 3X4X5X Progressive slot machine. The Valley resident was shocked when he learned he had won the progressive jackpot and thrilled to take home such a huge win from his favorite casino. “I couldn’t believe that it happened to me,” said Larry. Lone Butte Casino’s latest winner said that the jackpot came at a great time for him, but he thought it might take a while before it really sinks in as to how much he had actually won. Lone Butte Casino is located off the 202 Freeway at Kyrene just outside of Chandler. It is one of three casinos operated by Gila River Gaming Enterprises. The other casinos are Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino located off the I-10 at Wild Horse Pass Blvd. and Vee Quiva Casino located at 51st Ave and Baseline.

“This show is a great fit for me and I am excited to come on board as the new host while still being an active part of the CBS 5 team,” said Horton. “I have had the opportunity to appear as a judge on the show in the past and I’ve seen what a great and entertaining platform the show provides to some very talented local singers.” Auditions for Lucky Break at Lone Butte Casino take place every Wednesday in the Cascades Lounge. Performers may register online at WinGilaRiver.com or in person at the Lone Butte Casino’s Players Club desk. Registration is required in order to perform at one of the weekly competitions which are held every Thursday night. Lone Butte Casino is located at 1077 S. Kyrene Rd. (the 202 loop at the Kyrene exit in Chandler) For more information call1800-946-4452, or go to www. WinGilaRiver.com

Guests will be astounded by the level of detail that went into every room including the commissioned artwork from Arizona’s territorial days that will adorn the walls; the plantation shutters on the windows; and the rain-down showerhead in the elegant bathrooms. Each room was designed for optimal comfort. “This is our first of many milestones that will be achieved at Talking Stick Resort over the next few months,” said Jon Jenkins, President and CEO of Casino Arizona and Talking Stick Resort. “Many individuals deserve recognition for this first accomplishment. FROM A WOMAN’S POINT OF VIEW
“ELEVATE YOUR GAME IN TALKING STICK RESORT’S NEW POKER ROOM
n April 15, after much anticipaby Marianne Minneci tion, the new Casino Arizona Talking Stick Resort will open. After years of work and planning the time is almost here and like many of you I personally can’t wait. It has been exciting watching this new facility take shape over the last two years. Passing by on the 101 everyday going to and from work, I watched the structure rise like a Phoenix from what was once a parking lot. This is truly an end of an era. I will always remember many good times at the current location. When it first opened its doors the poker room was confined to a small area of the original tent. The place was always packed to the rafters and it was not uncommon to wait for well over an hour or more for a table. Things have sure changed from the early days at Casino Arizona. It’s bigger and better and still offering some of the best gaming in Arizona. As the saying goes “One door opens when another one closes. This thought crossed my mind last Sunday as I was playing in the monthly “Jack and Jill tournament at Casino Arizona at Indian Bend. I came to the realization that this would probably be the last tournament I would play at the tents. It seems like only yesterday when I attended the grand opening for the cur-
rent poker room and now next month I will be playing in the new and improved Poker Room at Talking Stick Resort Casino. I spoke with Kent Odekirk, Poker Director at Casino Arizona recently and he was bursting with excitement as he talked about the new poker room. Kent said “We listened to our players and we have encompassed everything they have asked for in this new poker room. The poker room will be its own separate area. The new room will have fifty all new poker tables. Signing up for games will be easy at the new automated kiosk which will also track your play. The room will be non-smoking, but there will be an area set-up for those who wish to take a smoke break. Along with other amenities, the room will have big screen TVs for viewing all of your favorite games while you play. It will also have its own restaurant and one more important feature; the restrooms will now be located in the poker room. The quarter mile sprint to the restroom during tournament breaks will be a thing of the past. Opening week promises to be a spectacular! You can “Elevate Your Game on Sat April 17, by playing in the $5,000 Added – Turbo No Limit Hold-em Championship Tournament - with a first place payout of $11,600. Buy-in for this event is $175.00 + a $25.00 service fee. Players will
start with $7,500 in chips. An optional $10 Staff Appreciation will give you an additional $2,500. On April 19 – April 23 look for “Super Splash Pots with Kickers, $12,000 will be splashed daily. Four lucky tables will be drawn at 6am, 10am, 12pm, 3pm, 5pm and 9pm. The winning table will be splashed with $100 – winning hand of course wins the pot – But all losing players will receive $50 each - so everyone is a winner. Players must be seated and playing when the table is announced in order to be eligible. As if all this is not enough, it gets better. During opening week April 19 -23 there will be an Opening Special $1,000 add on added to the prize pool of regularly scheduled tournaments which equates to the following: Mon – Fri at 11:15am (4/19 – 4/23) $1,750.00 added. Tues April 20 at 7pm - $2,000 added. Wed April 21 at 7pm - $4,000 added. Yes, many great things will be happening in the new poker room at Casino Arizona Talking Stick Resort. However, some things will remain the same - the non-stop poker action 24 hours a day, the same great line-up of monthly tournaments and the courteous and friendly poker room staff. Hope to see you all at the Grand Opening. Until next time, “Have a Lucky Month. Write me at azpokerlady@cox.net

WRAP AND RIBBON
rightly wrapped gifts, especially those covered with glittery paper and colorful ribbon, make recipients feel excited with the anticipation of opening that gift. In fact, the package’s wrap in some cultures is considered part of the present. What does this have to do with playing video poker in your local casino? It’s all about finding a good home for unwanted gifts and perks bestowed on you by your local casino. I’m probably not the only one that dislikes clutter in their closets, but some people don’t quite know what to do with all the incentive gifts handed out to frequent players. Here are some tips for sharing the wealth without appearing tacky
NON-RECYCLABLE: Sometimes you’re going to have to bite the bullet and just turn down the t-shirt with the casino’s name emblazoned on the front. Personally I rarely wear t-shirts, except to color my hair, and I can only use so many for that. You really shouldn’t embarrass yourself by giving a gift with the name of the local casino right on the front or back. You’ll know immediately if it’s one of those “just say no” sort of gifts.
CHARITABLE DONATIONS: I save sample-sized hotel bath items, like soap and shampoo, and give to charities. Homeless shelters, refuges for abused women and organizations that help job-seekers, accept these kinds of donations. I also give stuffed animals, toys and games to local schools. Make sure the casino’s name is not on the item if you are donating to a school.
FRIENDS AND FAMILY: Some things are definitely perfect as recycled gifts. For example, gift certificates usually have no expiration dates and are transferable. I see nothing tacky about using them and really appreciate it when the casinos offer gift cards instead of logoed items.
STORAGE: Most frequent players have a special closet they use to store gifts from the casino for future use. It’s nice to be able to find an appropriate thank-you gift to those who do something nice for us. I really dislike clutter, so it’s important to clean out the gift space every now and then. If there’s no reasonable place for it, then take it to the nearest Good Will drop off and make sure you pick up a receipt for the tax write-off.
COMMUNICATING TO CASINOS: I don’t want to appear ungrateful and look the proverbial gift horse in the mouth, but it seems like a real waste -- when an unwanted expensive gift is awarded by a casino. An example is a glass trophy, tiffany no less, with the name of the casino featured front and center. I know it was costly but I have no use for it whatsoever and can’t even donate it to a charity with a clear 14 ARIZONA PLAYER APRIL 2010
conscious. I honestly think patrons should inform casino staff when such a ridiculous gift is given to customers. There are times when so many thousands are purchased that the entire package could have been better spent on a drawing bestowing something worthwhile to a lucky few.
NON-TRANSFERABLE: I really wish I could gift some of the food comps I earn to others. Lately, I’ve noticed a smaller window of opportunity to use these earned comps and more casinos moving in the direction of discretionary comps. (A discretionary comp is one that’s up to casino staff, usually a host, and is not removed from your comp balance.) I’m sure this makes sense in the short run, since they often go unused or not even requested. However, in the long run frequent players feel some resentment over the limitation, especially when they’re enduring a bad luck cycle. It really does soften the blow when the casino shows appreciation for your business. The same rule of wastefulness applies to items with the casino’s logo. Many people refuse to wear them and organizations, like schools, can’t even accept them as donations.
FINAL THOUGHTS: As one of my friends likes to say when I point to casino “freebies,” “Oh you’re paying for them.” Really this is a true statement if you want to be honest with yourself. So why not make the most of the gifts and find a good way to wrap and ribbon them for others who will put them to good use? If you have a special spot for all the spoils they’ll be easier to locate and save you money in the process. Hopefully, marketing staff will take extra time to buy useful, non-logoed gifts for their customers in the future. Meanwhile, don’t let these items just gather dust in your closet -- use, donate or recycle these casino treasures. LUCK OF THE IRISH BLACKJACK TOURNAMENT
t. Patrick’s Day to me means just one thing, the 6th annual Blackjack tournament at Gila River Casino Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino. Since I hadn’t been out to the new Gila River property, I thought that this would be a perfect opportunity to check out the new facility, and play a great tournament. With one of Arizona’s top photographers, Erin Edmonson, accompanying me to photograph the event, we arrived at about 4pm. From the moment we pulled up, we were both impressed. Director of Games Michael Thompson gave us the grand tour of the property that included the area’s hottest new night club, “AIRIA.” You’ll want to put on your “dancin’ shoes” and check out this place! We also toured all the new lounges, and some terrific new restaurants, including Arizona’s first “Shula’s All American Steak House.” I was so overwhelmed that I decided to get a room for the evening, and it, too, was stunning. If you haven’t been out to the new Hotel casino, you owe it to yourself to check out the newest premier Casino Hotel in Arizona. This year, the format of the tournament changed from past years and was expanded to 125 entries. As usual, the tournament was very well-organized, and a sellout. One of the reasons that this tournament is so popular is because the casino adds $6,600 to the prize pool, making it a positive expectation venture for the player. Here is the math: The tournament pays through five places, with an average payout of $2,570 at the final table. Your chances of getting in the money are 25-1. In other words, you would get in the money once every 25 times you entered, by luck alone. With an entry fee of $60, you would invest $1,500 to enter 25 times, with an expected return of $2,570 giving you a positive expectation of $1,070 for every 25 tournaments entered. This is the reason, no matter what your skill level is, you should always enter this type of event, plus they are a lot of fun and everyone always has a good time.
In the first round, there were five players seated at each table, and everyone started with $1,000 in chips. Betting limits were $10 to $500, with Blackjack paying 2 to 1. A chip count would be held at the completion of hand 16. At the end of 21 hands, the player with the most chips would advance to the semifi16 ARIZONA PLAYER APRIL 2010
nal. There would be five semifinal tables, with five players each, and again the player with the most chips after 21 hands would advance to the final. In the first round, I played the first 10 hands somewhat conservative, and evaluated my competition. My goal for hands 11-16 was to be within $250 of the leader. After the chip count at hand 16, I had $1,600, and the lead. At this point, I calculated my position for the final hand, which was third. This meant that only two players would bet after me, so I felt I was in decent shape. On the final hand I estimated that player 1 had $1000 in chips, he only bet $10, player 2 had $1300 and made a max bet of $500. I was next to bet and the correct play for me was to cover as many scenarios as possible. Since I had $1600 in chips I matched player 2’s $500 bet, that way if player 1 and 2 had the same result as me, and we all lost or all won I would advance, if player 2 received a blackjack or doubled down I could still cover her bet. Players 4 and 5 were next to bet, they both had around $500 in chips and both bet the max. When the final hand was dealt, player one had 13, player two had 10, I received the best hand of 20, player four had 14 and player five had 15, the dealer turned up a 4. When player 2 doubled down on her 10 with another $500 and received a 10 to give her a hand of 20, it created a real dilemma for me. If I stood and we both won the hand she would advance because she now had $1,000 wagered to my $500 and I only had a $300 chip lead, the only way I would advance is if the dealer made 21 which is a lot less likely that the dealer busting with a 4 up which happens 40% of the time. I split my 10s and caught 7s on both. The dealer made 17 and I pushed while player 2 won and my night was over. A player wins while the other pushes happens only 8% of the time, I was beat by the luck factor. The tournament was won by David Bertram who took home the first place prize of $6600. Congratulations to David. Until next time I hope you play winning Blackjack.

LOTTERY NEWS & DRAWS HALF A MILLION ON A SCRATCHER TICKET! Adam Wienshienk had a big grin on his face when he turned in his winning Extreme Cash Scratchers ticket worth $500,000. That’s a hefty return on a $20 investment. Angela Young and her husband were also wearing big grins on their faces when they turned in their $500,000 winning ticket at the Arizona Lottery office. Who wouldn’t be grinning upon discovering their ticket was worth half a million dollars? Adam only plays the $5 to $20 Scratchers and usually redeems his winning tickets for new ones; this time was no exception. He redeemed a winning ticket for $15, added $5 to it and purchased one $20 Extreme Cash. Angela doesn’t usually play Scratchers in the $20 price range, but it was a new ticket with a huge top prize, and since it was the beginning of a new year she took a chance and bought one. Adam went out to his car and before he even left the parking lot, scratched the ticket. When he was finished, and saw the amount he’d won, the first words out of his mouth were, “Oh My God!” Within a half hour of scratching his ticket, Adam had signed the back of it, and stopped off at his wife’s workplace to show it to her. They both spent the entire weekend in shock because even though it was right there in front of them, they had a hard time believing it was real and not a mistake. And of course, being the weekend, Adam had to wait until Monday to have it redeemed. Angela took her ticket home to scratch and it wasn’t until she got to the last number that she found the winning match. She was feeling a little shaky when she saw the $500,000 amount in the
box, so she just sat and waited for her husband to come home from work. As soon as she heard his car pull into the driveway, she called him on his cell phone and told him, “Come to my office right away.” He immediately thought something was wrong, so as soon as he came in to the room, she showed him the ticket. Like Adam and his wife, they looked at it in shock, rechecked it a number of times and then made the decision to take it to the store to be checked. The ticket was a winner -- they hadn’t made a mistake. And although they were still reeling from the adrenalin rush, Angela had enough presence of mind to sign the back of the ticket. Scratchers tickets are Adam’s favorite game because, “I like to know if I’m a winner right now – instead of a few days from now.” But at his wife’s request, he does play Powerball when the jackpot is high. Angela only buys Scratchers tickets if she has a few extra dollars – and usually they’re in the $2 to $3 price range. Her husband will buy the Powerball tickets for both of them. Adam always “knew” he would one day win a big one. He and his wife plan to pay off their cars, and save a big chunk of Adam’s winnings but not before they celebrate his birthday “big time,” in Las Vegas. Angela and her husband said, “Their dream has always been to pay off their home.” The Arizona Lottery is proud to have played a major role in enabling these two families to have their wishes come true.

him purchased a “Slingo Trio”. When it was his turn in line, on a whim he said, “I’ll take one of those” and pointed to the same ticket. David then continued on to work, but instead of heading directly indoors, he decided to scratch the ticket. When he saw the amount he’d won was $50,000, he sat there in shock. “I almost had a heart attack.” After a few moments, he went inside and told his non-Lottery-playing brother he was going to take some time off as he had to go to the Lottery and redeem his ticket. His brother thought he was kidding around until he saw the ticket. When David left to go to the Lottery, his brother was still shaking

“Introducing a game of this magnitude is a historic moment for our Lottery,” said Jeff HatchMiller, executive director of the Arizona Lottery. “We’re confident our players will enjoy Mega Millions; it is important to us that we continue to bring new products like a second multi-state jackpot game to Arizona.” Mega Millions jackpots start at $12 million. For $1, players choose 5 numbers from 1 to 56 and one Mega Ball number from 1 to 46. Players that match the five numbers and the Mega Ball win the
jackpot. In addition to the jackpot, there are other cash prizes ranging from $2 to $250,000. An added Mega Millions feature is the Megaplier option. For a total purchase of $2, players who choose “Mega Millions with Megaplier” can increase their non-jackpot prize winnings by 2, 3, or 4 times, meaning that a $250,000 prize becomes a $500,000 prize if the Megaplier for that particular drawing is 2. Like Powerball, Mega Millions is expected to offer players the potential of new and more prizes, including the opportunity of a jackpot win, and contribute to Lottery sales and state revenues overall. Lottery retailers, from large-scale grocers to small mom-and-pop businesses, will all benefit from additional commission on Mega Millions sales. Since Powerball first went on sale in Arizona more than 16 years ago, it has generated $1.6 billion in sales. Last fiscal year, the game had sales of $117.2 million; more than $25 million was awarded to Arizona winners, and retailers earned more than $7.5 million in commissions. Further commenting about the launch of Mega Millions, Hatch-Miller said “We are optimistic about the sales potential of Mega Millions in Arizona. Research indicates that our players want new products, and jackpot games like Mega Millions and Powerball appeal to a broad spectrum of players. Ultimately, players, retailers and critical state programs receiving Lottery dollars will all benefit.” The Arizona Lottery has paired Mega Millions and Powerball in an introductory campaign that literally brings the two games to life. “Powerball” and “Mega Millions” are depicted by two colorful

“well-rounded” walk-around “him” and “her” characters who are quickly realizing that they are the perfect match. In fact, “Powerball” went to the extent of greeting “Mega Millions” at Sky Harbor International Airport and will serve as “Mega Millions’” official Arizona “ambassador” until becoming fully acclimated to the state. The public can meet the “Powerball” and “Mega Millions” characters and follow their story at www.arizonalottery.com or on the Arizona Lottery Facebook Fan page (www. facebook.com/arizonalottery). On April 13, Arizona Lottery employees rolled out the red carpet and were among the first to meet the characters at the Arizona Lottery Phoenix office. The open house and the arrival at Sky Harbor International Airport were the first of many appearances scheduled through April and May. Mega Millions drawings will occur on Tuesdays and Fridays—Powerball drawings are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays—and results for both games can be seen on the 10 p.m. news on Channel 15 (ABC) in Phoenix, Channel 13 (CBS) in Tucson, and in Spanish on Univision Arizona. You must be at least 21 to purchase or redeem tickets. The Arizona Lottery reminds everyone to please play responsibly.

JOKE OF THE MONTH Doughboy - Gone But Not Forgotten
Please join me in remembering a great icon of the entertainment community. The Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday of a yeast infection and trauma complications from repeated pokes in the belly. He was 71. Doughboy was buried in a lightly greased coffin. Dozens of celebrities turned out to pay their respects, including Mrs. Butterworth, Hungry Jack, the California Raisins, Betty
Crocker and Captain Crunch. The grave site was piled high with flours. Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy and lovingly described Doughboy as a man who never knew how much he was kneaded. Doughboy rose quickly in show business, but his later life was filled with turnovers. He was considered a smart cookie, but

wasted much of his dough on half-baked schemes. Despite being a little flaky at times, he still was a crusty old man and was considered a positive roll model for millions. Doughboy is survived by his wife Play dough, three children: John Dough, Jane Dough and Dosey Dough, plus they had one in the oven. He is also survived by his elderly father, Pop tart.
