gaming news WORLD PREMIERE OF “CODE RED” AT LONE BUTTE Lone Butte Casino located in Chandler unveiled a brand new casino game on March 30. Not only is it new to the Gila River Indian Community owned casino or even the greater Phoenix area, but to the entire world. The introduction of Bally Technologies next-generation casino game, Code Red, at Lone Butte is a world’s first. “It’s a really big deal,” said Jeff Martin, General Manager. “We are greatly honored and quite thrilled to be the first casino in the world to offer this remarkable new game to our guests. Code Red takes gaming excitement to an entirely new level and will contribute to the evolution of the gaming industry.” Indeed, Bally’s Code Red has been called a “game changer.” Featuring a first-of-its-kind, 22-inch curved LCD display. It looks like, feels like and plays like a traditional reel-spinning game, but is actually a video game according to Dan Savage, Bally’s Vice President of Marketing.

Along with Code Red’s leading-edge curved LCD display, the game contains Bally Technologies’ award-winning “U-Spin” gesturecontrol play mechanic and the fully integrated, interactive “iDeck” touch-screen button deck. The “U-Spin” feature in Code Red awards free games, one of three progressive jackpots, or bonus credits. Players activate the U-Spinenabled “Wheel Bonus” via a touch-screen glass display mounted in front of the curved LCD that allows them to touch and spin the virtual wheel—as if it were a real wheel. Code Red also debuts Bally’s new Free Games play mechanic, which shows possible bonus awards above each reel during free games. These awards may be bonus credits, locked wild symbols or a locked wild reel. When a Code Red symbol appears, players receive the bonus shown above that reel. A new, randomly selected award then replaces the one received. There is also a unique “Wildfire” stacked wilds play mechanic that,

when triggered, awards up to three additional wild symbols. “All of the great features of this new game add up to one unique, incredible experience,” added Martin. “And the most exciting part is that Lone Butte Casino’s guests are the first in the world to play it and enjoy it. We’re proud to be able to take this huge step in our continuing efforts to provide our guests with the very best gaming experience to be found anywhere.” Lone Butte Casino is located in Chandler off the Santan 202 freeway at the Kyrene exit. lottery news THE PICK Date

LOTTERY OFFICE POOL WINS $250,000 On March 24, twenty five members of a 41-member Lottery pool arrived at the Arizona Lottery office to redeem their winning Mega Millions ticket. Also on hand to capture the excitement and the story was the Channel 3 News team. The pool hails from Microchip, and the leader of the very happy group is Steve Bowen. He’s been in charge of the group for about six and a half years. They only purchase tickets when the jackpot reaches $150,000,000. Since he’s been in charge, they’ve only played 90 times. They play Mega Millions and Powerball. Each pool member puts in $5 a draw or $10 a week. (Sometimes some people opt not to play.) If they have any winning tickets from the previous draw, they redeem them and add them to the pot. For this particular draw, they ended up with 215 tickets. The ticket was purchased from Fry’s Marketplace on Riggs Road in Chandler. Steve, who has a dry sense of humor, notified the group by e-mail. He told them that “We didn’t win the big one, but the jackpot rolled, so we roll.

The good news is it went to $300,000,000…..” At the bottom of the e-mail, he said, “By the way, the good news is we won $250,000.” Then he sat back and waited for the shouts; he didn’t have to wait long. Each member of the pool received a check for $5,952.38 before taxes. One member had paid double, so he received $11,904.76. Everyone had a different scenario as to how they were going to use their winnings. Steve Kennelly said, “I’ll probably do something stupid with it like buy scuba gear”; Lisa Macias, “Buy my husband a grill that he wants”; Steve Cowden, “This will pay for a recent trip, and the rest will go to my kids’ college funds.” Since the Mega Millions jackpot was won in New York, they’ll now focus on the Powerball.

SURPRISE! YOU’RE $250,000 RICHER

“One Line for 10 Draws, Please”

Aaron Johnson, who makes his home in Surprise, received another “surprise” when he checked his Mega Millions ticket from the Jan. 28th drawing - he’d matched five numbers for a sweet $250,000 win! He purchased the winning five-line “Quick Pick” ticket, at the Quik Trip located on Grand Avenue in Surprise. Aaron had gone to the store to purchase a gallon of water to take to work and get his Lottery tickets. He purchased his water, but forgot to get his tickets. It wasn’t until he returned to his truck that he remembered, so he went back inside the store, once again waited in line, and eventually bought his tickets. Aaron went online to check his numbers and rechecked them; so did his wife. The following day, he called his boss, told him he needed a day off and the reason, and asked him if he would please keep quiet about his win. The couple is excited about their win. Now they can start a college fund for their daughter and do some updating to their home.

When a second-prize winner from the Feb. 8, Mega Millions drawing went to her favorite Safeway store at 1650 McCulloch in Lake Havasu City, to purchase her ticket, she had no idea as to how lucky that ticket was going to be. She simply purchased her usual one-line, tendraw Mega Millions ticket with the Megaplier using the same numbers she’s used for years. (by the way, she uses the same numbers for Powerball) As was her usual procedure, she checked her numbers the morning after the draw. Then she checked them again and decided to have her husband take a good look. After rechecking them they knew they had a $250,000 winner. The couple then remembered that they had also purchased the Megaplier – So suddenly, their $250,000 win, jumped to $1,000,000. This win, although a large one, is not going to change their lifestyle – But it will take the stress off of daily living and allow them to have a more secure future. It will also allow them to spend more time with their grandchildren and partake of one of their favorite pastimes - travel. But, this couple stays busy as both are involved in their community and serve on various committees. And, yes, they will continue playing Mega Millions and Powerball, as well as the occasional Scratchers ticket.

A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER

by Linda Boyd

Man in the Machine

very now and then I like to go over the latest scuttlebutt regarding truth versus fiction as it relates to video poker. With all the latest technology there’s always plenty of fodder for the rumor mill. There’s no harm done by carrying lucky charms or wearing your winning hat, many gamblers do, even if they won’t admit it. However, if you allow these superstitions to dictate playing choices or strategy on video poker (or any other game requiring skill) you’ll be wasting money in the long run. The most mind-boggling tale was relayed several years ago when a lady in Vegas jokingly said there was a tiny man in the machine that dealt the cards. I wasn’t there but she swore the other person believed her. You may think it’s impossible for anyone to be so gullible, but over the years I’ve heard some strange and twisted tales.

Truth or Myth: Here are statements I’ve personally heard (some frequently) along with whether or not they’re accurate. They’re not as far-fetched as the “man in the machine” belief but any incorrect assumptions can interfere with playing smart.

Time of Day Matters: Myth: This is something I hear all the time. “I notice more four of a kinds hit late at night” or similar comments are just plain foolish, with one possible exception. If the casino has server-based technology, some do, then it’s possible to change the game or pay schedule from a remote location off the gaming floor. The time of the day might matter if management decides to make changes during peak playing times, like on weekends and during celebratory holidays, like New Year’s Eve. If you are wondering just ask management if they have server-based devices.

Machines Are Paying Less: Myth: The probability of being dealt any winning hand remains the same given a deck of 52 virtual cards. For example, there are 2,598,960 possible dealt hands and you will be dealt trips (three of a kind) one in 48 hands. In Arizona casinos we have RNG’s (random number generators) inside every device. Be aware that every one of the 52 virtual cards has an equal chance of being dealt or drawn. If you are being paid less - check the pay schedule to see if it has been downgraded. If not, it’s just a streak of bad luck.

16 ARIZONA PLAYER April 2011

Some Machines Are Remotely Controlled: Truth: As mentioned before, this technology, called server-based, exists and is already in place in Las Vegas at the City Center and elsewhere. Look for more of these devices in the future especially in new casinos. (It’s cheaper to wire before the carpeting is installed.) This, however, is not a bad thing and may be good for players. That’s because you’ll get customized offers based on your play right at the machine instead of needing to go to a kiosk. Just make sure you carefully check both the game name and pay schedule before inserting money.

Same People Win Promotions: Partly True: The number of tickets you earn is based on your aggregate (total) coin-in; the more you play the better your chances of winning. Those who are frequent players will win more often; I consider this fair.

Don’t Play With a Slot Card: Myth: Hard to believe that some people still believe that your slot club card has any effect on the game. Use your card to earn comps, cash and promo entries unless the casino excludes the game you’re playing. There are a few casinos in Nevada that don’t award points for video poker because the odds are better if you select a good game. If a casino refuses to give you points then you should remove your card; fortunately this policy has not come to Arizona casinos. Final Thoughts: As the adage goes, if it sounds too improbable to be true, then it probably isn’t. Statements that defy logic, like a machine deals more of one rank than another make no sense unless you think the casino has somehow rigged their devices. If you really believe the machines are gaffed then you shouldn’t even be playing there. Keep in mind the casino can legally change pay schedules or slot chips so there is no reason to take the risk of cheating. For those who are still conversing with the “man in the machine”, it’s time to stop! Linda Boyd, a long-time table game player before turning to video poker, also writes for “Southern Gaming” and “Midwest Gaming and Travel”, her book, “The Video Poker Edge”, includes free removable pay schedules and free strategy cards for the most popular games. Look for her story in the 2011 Edition of “American Casino Guide”. The 2010 Second Edition of her book is available in both paperback and kindle. HORSIN’ AROUND

here is no lack of a story line in the 137th Kentucky Derby with a full gate, a plethora of scripts and a very promising cast. It’s not easy picking the winner of a race with minutes to post so prognosticating for Derby this far out is in itself a long shot but the logical contenders will be mentioned here along with my top selection. In recent years, when talking the Derby, it’s been about death, taxes and Calvin Borel, as he has been aboard the Kentucky Derby winner in three of the last 4 years. He rides Churchill as well as anybody alive and his mount will be a factor for that trend alone. Todd Pletcher got the monkey off his back last year when his student Super Saver won the first Saturday in May and he has the likely favorite in this year’s edition in Uncle Mo despite his loss in the Wood Memorial. He will need a rebound race but he might have learned a lesson for his lone defeat. Mo clinched the championship last year taking the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and opened 2011 with a facile win in the Timely Writer. Bob Baffert’s star The Factor will be forwardly placed if he gets to Kentucky but he has some serious stamina concerns. That might not be the case regarding Baffert’s other star, Midnight Interlude, who took the Santa Anita Derby in game style. Interlude’s dam won at a mile and three 8ths on grass.

Soldat had trained well going into the Florida Derby but the race really didn’t set up all that well for him. Dialed In has a style that demands speed up front but that probably will not be a concern on Derby Day.

"It’s Hard For ThreeYear-Olds To Beat Four-Year-Olds This Time Of Year” To Honor and Serve had such a solid juvenile campaign but he has not been able to repeat that stellar form. Mucho Macho Man is a serious horse on the right day. He lost all chance of winning the Louisiana Derby when he threw a shoe at the start of the race but still settled for a very good third. If he is healthy, he’ll be a player. Elite Alex is an interesting runner. He is a grinder, that just carves out the same kind of splits but these types can wear down ordinary horses if things fall perfectly into place.

Animal Kingdom looked good winning the Spiral Stakes but he must prove he can handle conventional dirt. And that leaves us with this year’s top pick, Dialed In. The Florida Derby winner Dialed In punched his ticket to Louisville and the Kentucky Derby by swallowing up his rivals in the last 100 yards to win the million-dollar race in the Sunshine State. As for Dialed In, he came from far, far back on a speed-favoring track to post a winning 93 Beyer and has every right to get the classic distance. He overcame two bad trips to win his first 2 races and was getting to the winner in his first start at 9 furlongs but just ran out of real estate. Dialed In’s sire Mineshaft banked over $2.2 million in his fine career. He won the Suburban and the Jockey Club Gold Cup, both at the same distance of the Kentucky Derby. His Grade 2 placed dam just won 2 sprints and was never sent long. But she is kin to a runner that made over $700,000 in the Orient and to Country Song, who won at a mile and an eighth on grass. Dialed In’s half brother Mambo Master was stakes placed and a winner at 9 furlongs. As bright a future that Dialed In has going for him, the best thing in his corner is his trainer Nick Zito. Zito knows his way around a good horse. He saddled the 1991 Kentucky Derby winner Strike the Gold, and hit pay dirt three years later when Go for Gin succeeded the first Saturday in May. Talking about the race Dialed In had before the Florida Derby, Nick had this to say, Zito: “It was no easy race. He ran against four-year-olds, and if you look at it, it’s hard for three-year-olds to beat fouryear-olds this time of year.” One thing is sure, this is not Zito’s first trip to the rodeo and he will have his horse as good as it is possible on May 7. Good luck and have a mint julep on me if you cash. FROM A WOMAN’S POINT OF VIEW

A Successful Event for Easter Seals

he first annual “Hold-Em For Hope” tournament benefitting Easter Seals Southwest Human Development took place on March 19 at Fort McDowell Casino. Overall, it was a great success and everyone that attended had a by Marianne Minneci great time. When the tournament fist got under way, I was a little disappointed by the lack of a celebrity presence at the event, but then I came to realize that the real celebrities were the 82 individuals that played in our tournament and the volunteers who raised over $5,000 for a well deserving charity. After 5 hours of play the winner of the event was Daniel (Dusty) Rhoades, who took home $1,000 and a beautiful custom made watch courtesy of Gaston Jewelers. Second Place honors went to Steve Nichols who pocketed $625 for his efforts along with a two night stay at Twin Pines Resort. Additional winners at the final table also snagged $340 for their efforts, were as follows; 3rd - Michael Wetzel, 4th - Justin Van Dyke, 5th - Carol Bellemane, 6th - Ron Morenz, 7th - David Denk, 8th - Glen Brown, 9th - Shane Radle, and 10th - Terry Forsberg. True to my reputation, I managed to come in on the bubble in 11th place. No money, but the overall experience of working on this event and being able to raise funds for children and adults with disabilities was prize enough for me.

I want to give a special thanks to the volunteers who manned our donation table, Cheryl Hill and Nicole Schenk and the many players who put donations into our collection jug, they helped raise an additional $220 for Easter Seals. A Special mention goes out with our thanks to Kohl’s Department Stores for making a generous donation to our cause. I also want to thank Mike Byrne, Table Games Director and George Hitt - Tournament Director and all of the wonderful staff in the poker room for helping to make our event a successful one. We look forward to working with them in years to come to make this event bigger and better. Until next time, “Have a Lucky Month”. Write me at azpokerlady@cox.net.

gaming news EYE POPPING NEW GAMES DEBUT AT NIGA SHOW By Kevin Cummings Every spring, the National Indian Gaming association puts on a show for the Indian gaming industry as a way to learn about new systems, services, products, entertainment and to inform people about the new technologies that will soon be available.

This year the NIGA Show was here in Phoenix at the Convention Center with vendors hawking everything from energy drinks on tap in casino bars to totally electric cars. Gaming vendors bring their new games and allow people to see what is in store for the future. The top manufactures each brought their latest and greatest games to show just how exciting slot gaming can be. WMS Gaming was proud to introduce “Alice,” an adorable multiple-bonus game similar to the wildly popular Goldfish series. The game is available as both a mechanical (Alice & the Enchanted Mirror) and a video (Alice & the Mad Tea Party) and will debut on gaming floors within the upcoming months. Another innovative game which was showcased at the WMS booth was “Attack from Mars,” based off the Williams Pinball Classic. The game features an alien theme in which the player can choose to play as the humans defending earth or choose to invade earth as the aliens. The game’s level of detail is amazing and is full of hidden surprises. Just like “Lord of The Rings,” the game is linked to PlayersLife.com which allows players to collect additional prizes and unlock new bonuses at home. International Game Technology (IGT) was there to impress with the G2E show stopping game “Ghost Busters.” The game is based on the hit 1980’s movie and your task is to defeat the ghosts without getting slimed! While Slimer does make a debut, he is on your side adding wilds. They also introduced a new “Sex in The City” game named “Big’s Diamonds.” Konami’s “Rock Around the Clock,” which is a 50’s themed progressive system, is sure to be a hit on gaming floors across the country. The game is featured in Konami’s Advantage Revolution cabinet which spins mechanical reels 180 degrees to show an LCD monitor for bonuses. 24 ARIZONA PLAYER April 2011

Bally Technologies brought many exciting new titles to NIGA including “Code Red,” which is currently making its world-wide debut at Lone Butte Casino in Chandler. The game features a curved LCD which mimics mechanical reels and displays amazing graphics which simulate a “Price is Right” style wheel for progressives and credit awards. The next big title is the “Money Vault” series... which is a successor to the “U spin” series. The game features an exciting top box which can award up to a $1,000,000 progressive.

Aristocrat Technologies was proud to introduce the King of the Jungle - Tarzan, a graphically rich game which feature multiple interactive bonuses feature on their 32” widescreen Verve cabinet. Even our own publisher Phil Scudella was really

impressed while playing the new game, when “Jane” stepped out from behind the cabinet and tapped Phil on the shoulder, he looked up and replied, “Now THIS is the kind of interactive bonus I was hoping for”…..Sorry Phil…your bonus is a free photo op. Cover Story continued from page 8

Mansion in Sedona

Finally, while it may be a company you have never heard of, Aruze Gaming showcased its line of interactive and unique gaming options such as “Vampire and Beauty,” “Howling Moon,” and “Paradise Fishing”...a large community style game which has fishing pole controllers that give motion feedback during the bonus when a fish is hooked. While the games are currently not available in Arizona, keep your eyes peeled as they will be debuting soon! If you’re planning to spend more than just a day watching the Bull Riding then visit the Prescott area – First call 1-800-967-4637 and book your gaming getaway at the Prescott Resort featuring the best views in Prescott. Then, venture out to golf one of the beautiful golf courses close-by, or head to one of the nearby lakes for boating, fishing and hiking. Plus it’s just a short drive to the famous ghost town of Jerome, or to Sedona - famous for its vortex sites, artists, restaurants and the Red Rock Scenic Byway - and we haven’t even mentioned world famous “Whiskey Row” in downtown Prescott where you’ll find The Palace, Arizona’s oldest restaurant and bar. And don’t miss the Sharlot Hall Museum. All this, and we have only scratched the surface of all fun places you can enjoy in the Prescott area. Few players realize, that just outside the door, one may hear wild wolves howl! This June, two dozen lucky participants will venture forth to learn more about wildlife and wolves on tribal lands, in the company of White Mountain Apache biologists. Hon-Dah Casino hosts the wildlife groups on the first and last nights of the journey; in between guests stay at Maverick Camp, a prized location in aspen and mixed conifer forests, close to the tribe’s trophy elk meadows and a prime spot for viewing elk, wild turkey, a host of birds, and possibly – the elusive Mexican Wolf. The White Mountain Apache Tribe is now offering a unique culture and wildlife tour that will take you on a 6-day/5-night journey into the heart of the Southwest. The White Mountain Apache Reservation is situated on some of Arizona’s finest wilderness lands. Featuring lush forests at elevations of 7000 ft - the landscape blends elements of the Rocky Mountains and Mexico’s Sierra Madres. The Hon-Dah area and other White Mountain Apache lands offer a green oasis in an otherwise arid Southwest and June is a peak time for wildflowers, nesting birds, and elk calves – the latter a real key to locating local Black Bear and wolf activity. DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR Hanna Hanna has been raised by her father in the frozen wilderness of Finland. She has never been around other people and knows little of the world. Her father taught her everyby thing she knows but concentrated David Ramsey his training on teaching her to be a perfect assassin. He tells her she much be able to protect herself once she enters the real world. He tells her she has to be prepared for a woman who works for the CIA that killed her mother and wants them both dead. When she turns 16 Hanna decides it’s time to leave the safety of her isolated home. She ends up on the run with CIA after her. This is a solid action film with great acting and a great script.

Arthur Arthur is a rich overgrown child with a penchant for alcohol. He has been able to indulge his every whim his entire life. Hobson, his former nanny, takes care of him. His mother is forcing him to marry a former girlfriend or lose his billion dollar inheritance. Then he meets Naomi and falls in love. Now he doesn’t know what to do. I really liked this remake, in many ways it is better than the original including the cast and the way they interpret their characters. The audience I saw it with laughed so much I missed more than a few lines. If you have not seen the original this is a funny endearing romantic comedy and if you have seen the original - I think you will enjoy the new interpretation.

David’s Video Details The King’s Speech The story of how King George IV overcame his stammer and lead Britain into and through World War II. While it was embarrassing his stammering was never a real issue until his brother abdicated the throne and he became king, just as the country was going to war with Hitler’s Germany. His wife enlists an Australian speech therapist with unorthodox methods. At first the future King is not sure of the unusual exercises but then he sees results. This is a story of family, friends and overcoming adversity. The acting is terrific and the story is well told.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1 Harry, Ron and Hermione decide to finish Dumbledore’s work and find the rest of the Horecruxes they need to defeat Voldemort. Meanwhile, the Dark Lord has taken control the Ministry of Magic and Hogwarts, he has every wizard looking for Harry and his pals. The pace is slower than most of the earlier films allowing for more personal moments with the illustrious trio, including a touch of romance. There is plenty of action and lots of what you expect from a ‘Harry Potter’ film - I can’t wait for Part 2.

Tron: Legacy

Trooper Rick Grimes wakes up from a coma to find the hospital empty, in complete disarray and overrun by zombies. He collects he all the guns and ammo he can and goes searching for his wife and son. With zombies everywhere there is a lot of tension and a lot of action. Rick runs into other survivors on his travels and they have conflicting agendas whose resolutions keep the tension going. The series is about the survivors and their personal interaction while fighting zombies and occasionally each other. This is a short season with only 7 episodes and every one of them is intense. The violence is graphic and bloody, just like a good zombie story should be. I can’t wait for season 2. David Ramsey is the President and co-founder of the Phoenix Film Critics Society and a member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (The Critics Choice Awards). Watch for him on the CBS 5 Morning News every Friday just after 6am and on ABC-15’s “Sonoran Living Live” every other Friday at 11am. Read more of his DVD reviews at WildAboutMovies.com. Time to relax and chill Go with your guts Night of fun is extended Terrific weekend

Jim was sitting reading his paper when his wife walked up behind him and whacked him on the head with a rolled-up magazine. “What the hell was that for?” he asked.

“But you don’t understand sweetie” he pleaded. “Two weeks ago when I went to the track, Mary Lou was the name of one of the horses a friend told me to bet on.”

“That was for the piece of paper in your pants pocket with the name Mary Lou written on it,” she replied.

“Oh honey, I’m sorry,” she said. “I should have known there was a good explanation.”
