A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER

The Yin-Yang of Video Poker

by Linda Boyd

f you’ve spent anytime inside a casino you’ve already seen the yin-yang symbol on some slot devices. It’s the circle filled with two tear drops, one white with a black dot, and the other black with a white dot. This Chinese symbol is used to convey a balance and an interrelationship between seemingly opposite concepts. For example day and night are more than opposites because day becomes night and night becomes day; in other words they are complementary concepts and dependent upon each other. So what could yin-yang possibly have to do with video poker? Actually, it’s a concept related to all forms of gambling accounting for the adrenalin flow during winning and losing sessions. Game Volatility: Games with a high risk of losing your bankroll are said to be more volatile than those with a lower risk. A measure of the game’s volatility is its variance. If you’re an action junkie and want extremes in the yin-yang factor then you’re going to be looking for a more volatile game. High Variance: Games with an increased likelihood that short term results will vary from longterm expectations; the higher the variance, the greater the probability that your session results will be either higher or lower than the theoretical expectations (ER). Low Variance: Games with an increased likelihood that short-term results will be similar to long-term expectations. Not a radical yin-yang deoPoker_1/3page_vp 10/12/09 12:31than PM Page 1 coaster. ratio-- moread.qxp a merry-go-round a roller

Choosing Your Game: It’s important that you are able to separate the concepts of game variance (risk factor) from the game’s ER (expected return). You will, of course always want to head for the game with the highest theoretical return, provided that you know the basic game strategy. (If not I suggest you practice at home on tutorial software, like Dean Zamzow’s WinPoker before playing “for real” inside a casino.) Table 1.1 looks at only the ER and variance of four popular VP games: 9/6Jacks or Better (9/6 JOB), 8/5 Bonus Poker (8/5BP), 9/6 Double Bonus Poker (9/6DB) and 9/6 Double Double Bonus Poker (9/6DDB). Be aware that most Arizona casinos have either 9/5DDB (ER 97.8729%, variance 42.16708) or 8/5DDB (ER 96.7861%, variance 41.99487), both with lower theoretical returns than the 9/6DDB used on Table 1.1. Table 1.1 GAME 9/6JOB 8/5BP 9/6DB 9/6DDB

Expected Return 99.543%

99.166% 97.806%

20.90408 30.77813

98.980%

41.98498

Looking at the data on Table 1.1 you may be surprised that 9/6 JOB has a higher ER and lower variance than any other game on this table. You’d think that gamblers would flock this game with a higher theoretical return and less risky to your bankroll than the others. The opposite is true. Gamblers will play 9/5 DDB (ER 97.8729%, variance 42.16708) or even 8/5DDB (ER 96.7861%, variance 41.99487) so most Arizona casinos don’t even have to offer 9/6DDB.

The reason casinos can get away with the double whammy, that’s low ER and high risk is partially due to the yin-yang factor. Gamblers are often thrill-seekers and are willing to suffer lower lows in return for higher highs. Budgeting Appropriately: If you’ve already decided to play a high risk game - even one with a low ER, say 8/5 DDB, make sure you budget appropriately or plan to spend a lot of time on the sidelines. If you play for a quarter - each hand will cost $1.25 and failure to get any 4OAKs will burn through your cash quickly. A ballpark for quads is two per hour if you play around 800 hands per hour. In return you’ll lose 5 coins for each short pay on two pair which occur approximately once every eight hands or 100 times per hour. So that’s a loss of 500 coins per hour for choosing either DB or DDB instead of JOB in return for the higher payouts for 4OAKS. If you’re on the dark side of the bell-shaped curve for quads (that’s the yin) then you’ll have to absorb the 500 coins per hour loss. Final Thoughts: The yin-yang factor is what makes gambling sessions vary between exhilarating and down right frustrating. If all we did was lose or win then the excitement would diminish due to the very nature of the endeavor. (I’m sure you think that winning every single time would by one big heart-thumping event after another, but the risk is part of the thrill.) My point with video poker games is to by all means have fun and be entertained but, also, focus on selecting the best game and making sure you know basic game strategy. Your long run results are most important and that means finding the best odds available in your Arizona casino. he Kentucky Derby countdown is in serious mode with just weeks left until the May 3 extravaganza at Churchill Downs and he’s a little insight on some legitimate contenders with an early pick to

boot. Recent important preps were concluded and both the Wood Memorial and the Santa Anita Derby appear to be powerful races. California Chrome looked like a winner as soon as the gates opened in the Santa Anita Derby Saturday and online sports betting site players now have a legit reference point as the Kentucky Derby approaches. The son of Lucky Pulpit broke a tad slowly, was a head off the lead after a half-mile in :47.02 and was the same margin back after threequarters of a mile in 1:10.81. And then the race was over. California Chrome quickly ignited to open up a 5-length lead at the top of the lane and stretched it another quarter of a length getting the 9 furlongs in 1:47.52 under a strong hold while not being asked for his best. This was the fastest Santa Anita Derby since Indian Charlie went 1:47 flat in 1998 and California Chrome final time was also quicker than Sunday Silence and Winning Colors, who both went on to win in Kentucky the first Saturday in May. And to consider that California Chrome was geared down makes his victory even more impressive. Chrome looks to be the early favorite America’s most famous race. Art Sherman trains California Chrome and he has been around the block and back. He was the exercise rider for the 1955 Kentucky Derby winner Swaps, who was also a California-bred. Sherman: “He’s my Swaps, let’s put it that way. If all goes well, we’ll ship to Kentucky probably a week before the Derby. It was awesome. That’s all I can say. I got a little spooked leaving the gate. He got banged around pretty good but I really think he’s a better horse stalking. Right now, he’s kind of freaky and I’m enjoying it. I can’t believe the races I’ve been seeing.” California Chrome has won his last 4 races by a total of 24 and a quarter lengths. A total of 7 runners have accomplished the SA Derby /KY Derby double including the 2012 hero I’ll Have Another. Wicked Strong was wickedly good on recently as he powered home to win the Wood. Wicked Strong was 2 lengths off the lead with a furlong to go but he quickened rapidly and drew off by 3 and a halflengths in 1:49.31. That final time holds up very well. It was the fastest Wood since 24 ARIZONA PLAYER April 2014

Bellamy Road freaked in the race in 2005 when he went 1:47.16. Wicked Strong earned a 104 Beyer Speed Figure. Classy performers like Gallant Man, Count Fleet, Seattle Slew Bold Forbes, Fusaichi Pegasus and Congaree and I Want Revenge did the Wood/Ky. Derby tango. The most famous loser of the Wood was the great Secretariat, who won the Triple Crown in 1973. Other serious runners that could challenge for all the money in the Kentucky include Constitution. He was impressive winning the Florida Derby and if he makes the gate at Churchill he will be trying to be the first runner since 1882 to win the Derby without running as a 2-year-old. He has impressed race watchers with his maturity and he is in the right hands of Todd Pletcher. Bob Baffert’s Hoppertunity ran 2nd in the Santa Anita debut and he could very well improve off of that effort. Intense Holiday comes off a second in the Louisiana Derby but he hooked a horse that had an easy lead that day. With a projected hot pace, he has every right to run better in Kentucky. And the winner is……. California Chrome. I don’t think we have seen the best of this runner and his tactical speed will give him first run on the deep closer on Kentucky Derby Day. Good luck. lottery news $100,000 Birthday Present

A Fantasy Realized

Thomas Street and his wife were at Max’s Sports Restaurant and OTB at 6727 N. 47th Ave in Glendale having a celebration dinner for his wife’s birthday. While waiting to be served they purchased an assortment of instant scratch games from the Lottery vending machine. Their dinner arrived, and they finished scratching the tickets. They looked at each other in disbelief as one of the Neon 10’s was a $100,000 topprize winner. Thomas and his wife quickly finished their dinner, asked for the check, and went right home. Although a little uncomfortable having the unredeemed ticket in the house, they had no trouble sleeping that night. Thomas and his wife play instant scratch games about three times a week. They make their purchase from any store they’re close to at the time. They also play Powerball, Mega Millions, and Fantasy 5 on a regular basis. They rarely use their own numbers, instead letting the terminal pick their numbers for them. Thomas works for city government. In his spare time, he and his wife enjoy outdoor activities including a strong interest in archery; although they don’t compete. After paying off some bills, Thomas plans to put the bulk of the money into a retirement account..

Dale Gresham of Phoenix is a regular Fantasy 5 player. He uses his own numbers consisting of important family dates. He’s been playing the same numbers for more than 21 years. He considers the numbers lucky, as they’ve brought him a few wins under $1,000. Once he had his first win with Fantasy 5, he stayed with it. Dale purchased two lines for the January 30 drawing. At first, he thought there was a mistake when he checked his numbers. Then when he checked them again, he knew they were correct. The only thing that concerned him was that he didn’t know how many winners there were. Finally, his wife called the Lottery and asked. When they found out they were the only winners, they were ecstatic, as that meant they had won the entire $53,000 jackpot. Dale and his wife also have different sets of numbers for Powerball, The Pick, and Mega Millions. Dale is a retired warehouse manager for an industrial supply company. He enjoys surfing the Internet, reading, and spending time with his family. The couple plan to do some household repairs and, as a special treat, buy some “good seats” for the upcoming Billy Joel concert. The winning ticket was purchased at Fry’s Fuel Center, 1805 W. Glendale Ave., Phoenix.

The “Q” awarded best casino again!

Yuma’s Best, an annual reader’s poll conducted by the Yuma Sun, has named Quechan Casino Resort as ‘Best Casino’ for the fourth year. Voting was held through the end of 2013, with hundreds logging in to vote for their favorites in local dining, shopping and services. Located in California, just over the Arizona border from Yuma, Quechan Casino Resort also known as the Q features a sprawling casino with more than 1,000 slot machines, a live poker room and other table games as well as the only high limit gaming room in the region. The resort also includes three distinctive restaurants and a food court, a 166-room hotel with eight spacious suites, and the 20,000-square foot Pipa Event Center, which hosts meetings, special events and live headline entertainment. “We greatly appreciate receiving this award again from our customers and guests who voted in the Yuma Sun’s poll,” said Richard Williamson, Quechan Casino Resort Interim CEO. “We offer each guest exceptional customer service, reason-

able prices, delicious dining options and fun and leisure in desert luxury, and are honored to be recognized as the ‘Best Casino.” While table games like poker, Mystery Card Roulette, Ultimate Texas Hold ‘Em, and others entertain players in the casino, performances from local and national acts enthrall audiences in the Pipa Event Center. “One of the reasons we were voted ‘Best Casino,’ is because of the quality entertainment we bring to the Q,” explained Williamson. “In the past we’ve hosted legendary artists like Willie Nelson, Los Lobos Dwight Yoakam and Randy Travis, and upcoming performances include the Mariachi Extravaganza, and recently added Ziggy Marley in July.” For more information about what makes Quechan Casino Resort the “Best Casino” please visit http://www.playqcr.com/. Hotel reservations can be made online or by calling 877-783-2426.

Quechan Casino Resort (The Q) is a hospitality and gaming destination independently owned and operated by the Quechan Indian Tribe. Open since 2009, the 168-room property was inspired by Mediterranean design with tribal influences. The gaming floor includes a state-of-the-art casino featuring 1,000 of the latest slot machines, 15 table games, and a 10-table live poker room. The Q is home to three delicious restaurants including Sidewinders Sports Bar & Grill, the Ocotillo Café and Ironwood Steakhouse as well as the 20,000 sq. ft. Pipa Event Center featuring an array of headline concerts.

Jerome: “America’s Most Vertical City” Located high on top of Cleopatra Hill (5,200 feet) between Prescott and Flagstaff is the historic copper mining town of Jerome, Arizona. Once known as the wickedest town in the west, Jerome was a copper mining camp, growing from a settlement of tents to a roaring mining community. Four disastrous fires destroyed large sections of the town during its early history, resulting in the incorporation of the City of Jerome in 1899. Founded in 1876, Jerome was once the fourth largest city in the Arizona Territory. The population peaked at 15,000 in the 1920’s. The Depression of the 1930’s slowed the mining operation and the claim went to Phelps Dodge, who holds the claim today. World War II brought increased demand for copper, but after the war, demand slowed. Dependant on the copper market, Phelps Dodge Mine closed in 1953. The remaining 50 to 100 hardy souls promoted the town as a historic ghost town. In 1967 Jerome was designated a National Historic District by the federal government. Today Jerome is a thriving tourist and artist community with a population of about 500. Jerome sits above what was the largest copper mine in Arizona and produced an astonishing 3 million pounds of copper per month. Men and women from all over the world made their way to Arizona to find work and maybe a new way of life. Today the mines are silent, and Jerome has become the largest ghost town in America. Jerome’s personality has changed dramatically in the past 30 years. Once a thriving mining camp between the late-1880s and early 1950s, Jerome is now a bustling tourist magnet and artistic community with a population of about 450. It includes a modicum of artists, craft people, musicians, writers, hermits, bed and breakfast owners, museum caretakers, gift shop proprietors and fallendown-building landlords.

28 ARIZONA PLAYER April 2014

What is the Town of Jerome like today? Is it worth your time to visit? The answer is a resounding yes! Jerome is an enchanting town, and a photographer’s paradise. From its external appearances it hasn’t changed much in nearly 100 years. Many of the buildings used by present-day business folks are those built after the fires of 1894 and1899. A number of the buildings have been restored and more are planned for restoration. Due to the 30-degree incline of the mountainside, gravity has pulled a number of buildings down the slope. To the delight of some, one of those buildings was the town’s jail. Those buildings still standing make for interesting visiting and with a little research you can find their historical significance. One notable section is the “Cribs District.” You will find this area across the street from the English Kitchen, in a back alley where all the buildings were all part of Jerome’s ill-famed “prostitution row.” Make Jerome your next trip destination. Being centrally located, a stay at one of Jerome’s bed and breakfasts, inns or hotels is perfect for a home base to explore the entire northern Arizona region from. Drive from Jerome to Cottonwood, Clarkdale, Sedona, Prescott, Camp Verde, Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon and then return to Jerome to relax for the evening and dine at one of the fine restaurants. Then just relax to the peaceful surroundings that no other city in Arizona can offer. Once in Jerome, there are many things to see and do - Check out the many unique shops, relax and have a bit to eat at one of many restaurants, listen to some great music at a saloon or sit and relax with a glass of wine at the Jerome Winery. Once you have spent enough time shopping and relaxing in Jerome, where in the late 1800’s there was gambling a plenty, and now there is none - why not check out some nearby casinos where you can try to take home a load of cash. You’ll find Bucky’s and Yavapai Casinos in Prescott and Cliff Castle Casino Hotel in Camp Verde just a few miles away for an exciting night of entertainment before retiring to the peaceful serenity of America’s largest Ghost Town – Jerome, Arizona

gaming news THE DIAMOND IN THE DESERT TURNS 30! During April, Desert Diamond Casinos & Entertainment is celebrating 30 years as a premier entertainment destination in Southern Arizona. The month-long festivities include fantastic music, special discounts, and more than $1 million in giveaways. Thirty Years of Growth While the history of gaming for the Tohono O’odham Nation dates back thousands of years, the start of modern gaming occurred on April 17, 1984 when the doors opened on the Papago Bingo Hall. As this enterprise quickly expanded, the Nation took a leadership role in negotiations with the State of Arizona for a tribal gaming compact, ultimately resulting in the opening of the first Desert Diamond Casino in 1993.

Nearly a decade later, in 2002, the Nation again took a lead role in securing passage of Proposition 202, which established updated guidelines for Indian gaming and ensured that it will continue well into the future. Now Desert Diamond Casinos & Entertainment has grown to encompass three unique facilities near Tucson, Sahuarita, and Why, Arizona. Each location is commemorating this amazing thirty-year milestone with major offers and special prizes. Desert Diamond Casinos’ April Anniversary Bash On April 17, all Desert Diamond Casinos & Entertainment locations will celebrate the 30th Anniversary with an amazing array of giveaways, while supplies last. Starting at 10 a.m., all players can receive Anniversary T-shirts and Coffee Tumblers, while Table Game and Poker players can also pick up special Anniversary Baseball Caps. Even the casino bars are getting in on the action. Diamond-level cardholders can receive a FREE commemorative pint glass with $2.50 refills of their favorite draft beers and house margaritas. Making a Difference - Both On & Off the Reservation Thirty years of gaming have made a tremendous difference on the Tohono O’odham Nation and across Arizona. On the Nation, gaming has created jobs, funded new health care, elder care and community facilities, and allowed the Nation to establish its own fire department. In the ten years since the current gaming compacts were approved by voters, tribal casinos across the state have contributed more than $780 million through revenue sharing to support Arizona’s state and local governments, education, health care, public safety, and other important needs. During this time, the Tohono O’odham Nation itself has made direct revenue sharing grants to more than 250 local governments and community programs that provide important

public services. And in just the past decade, Desert Diamond Casinos & Entertainment has donated more than $4 million in charitable contributions to almost 600 nonprofit organizations in Arizona, in addition to sponsoring major community events every year. Carrying On the Mission With a spectacular first thirty years of excitement, entertainment, and opportunity, the future looks bright for Desert Diamond Casinos & Entertainment. The gaming enterprise recently rolled out a new tiered Rewards Card program featuring extra rewards and savings, as well as Arizona’s first Tribute Card for veterans and active military. Through sponsorships, donations, and revenue sharing, Desert Diamond Casinos continues to support the wider Arizona community as it carries on the mission of service to the Tohono O’odham Nation that began at a bingo hall thirty years ago. Desert Diamond Casinos & Entertainment operates three locations near in Southern Arizona; Desert Diamond Casinos Tucson, 7350 S. Nogales Highway in Tucson, Desert Diamond Casinos Sahuarita, 1100 W. gaming news ODDS ARE: BASEBALL IS BACK!

New Casino Resort Planned for Prescott

The “Boys of Summer” have returned and being the gambler that you are – I suppose you were wondering “Just what are the chances my team will win the 2014 World Series?” As in past years, there were “Free Agent” signings, trades, spring training injuries, players that gave up the dream and retired and surprises like rookie players making the starting line-up and even the starting rotation. Here’s opening week look at the odds – called the “Baseball Futures” for the 2014 season - according to Vegas odds-makers. Remember these odds change daily based on trades, injuries to key players and the way a team is playing currently.

The Yavapai-Prescott Indian Tribe Board of Directors announces preparation for a casino resort on a 12- acre parcel of land on the Northeast corner of Highway 69 and the Yavpe Connector. Groundbreaking is scheduled for early fall of 2014, with completion anticipated in late winter of 2016. Working with architectural, engineering, and interiors firm, Leo A. Daly, the Tribe envisions a destination resort that will consolidate the operations of its two current facilities Bucky’s and Yavapai Casinos. The new state-of-the-art Casino and Hotel complex will feature approximately 50,000 square feet of Casino space with an attached 60 to 80 room upscale resort/hotel. The facility will offer restaurants serving a variety of cuisines, a central video bar and a flexible event space that will accommodate a variety of entertainment events. The facility’s “destination” design is focused on bringing more excitement and value for current customers, as well as drawing in new customers from outside the region. Once the new facility is up and running, the old Bucky’s Casino will be transformed into additional space for the Prescott Resort. The economic impact of this project to the Prescott region is estimated to be $80 million over the next 18 months. This figure is the result of an economic multiplier effect, based on the direct and indirect benefits to the region. These benefits are the result of the total project cost and related increased spending in the local economies. This multiplier effect number was provided by the Yavapai College Regional Economic Development Center. A press conference was held to discuss the project on Saturday, April 5, at the Prescott Resort and Conference Center’s Granite Mountain Room. This meeting was open to the media, the public, and to any employees who wanted to attend.

St Patrick’s Day Blackjack Tournament

n March 17th, 2014 Wild Horse Pass held their 10th annual St Patrick’s Day Blackjack Tournament. The Tournament was limited to 125 players and as in years past, the tournament was a sell-out. The Tournament had a $60 entry fee and the 1st place money of $10,000 was put up by Wild horse Pass. Second through 5th place was to be paid from the entry fees. New this year Wild Horse Pass added an additional prize of a Diamond watch for both the top Female and Male player. The Tournament consisted of three rounds, a qualifying, a semi-final, and the championship round. To reach the semi-final you had to win your table in one of the qualifying rounds. The qualifying rounds had five players per table and each player started with $1000 in play chips. At the end of 15 hands of Blackjack the player with the highest chip total would move on to the semi-final. I entered the tournament along with a friend Jennifer Madison, whom I have been sharing my vast tournament knowledge with. Jennifer has won four out of the first six tournaments that she entered, so I felt she was ready for this one. The odds of either won of us reaching the championship round and getting paid by luck alone were 25 to 1. We agreed that we would split any money won should either of us get paid effectively reducing the odds to 12.5 to 1. In the qualifying round Jennifer showed an amazing ability to recognize when she needed to make a catch up bet and caught three blackjacks to give her the chip lead at the end of 15 hands and advance her to the semi-final. The Semi Final had 5 players per table and at the end of 21 hands the player with the most chips would advance to the championship round. In Jennifer’s semi-final round the other four players were super aggressive trying to get an early lead, but the dealer was very hot. Jennifer lost the first four hands and instead of continuing to make large bets like the rest of the players

at her table she started betting the minimum. Good thing too, she ended up losing the first 12 hands but by making minimum bets and losing the least she was close to the lead by the chip count at hand 16. By hand 21 there were just two players left, Jennifer who had a slight lead and another player. Jennifer had to bet first. She knew that 31% of the time 2 players will both lose the hand and 30% of the time both players will win, she made the percentage play and bet her lead minus a chip. The other player went all in. On the final hand the Dealer made blackjack sending Jenifer into the Championship round. In the championship round Jennifer, another female, and three male players remaining decided to “chop” the prize money of $16,250 and each take $3,250 each. However there was still the issue of the men’s and women’s diamond watches to be settled. So the final five played 21 hands to determine who would receive the remaining prizes. At the end of 21 hands a brilliant game by Jennifer Madison found her with the most chips among all players and she was awarded the Ladies watch valued at $3400. T.J. Jorgensen has been a professional Blackjack player for over 20 years. He is well known for his live tournament play. He has competed against, and beaten, some of the top tournament players in the world and has won the prestigious World Series of Blackjack.

DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR Captain America: The Winter Soldier While Steve Rogers struggles to fit into his new role in the modern world he is confronted by a new enemy, The Winter Soldier, but there is something familiar about him. Meanwhile, Nick Fury is attacked and left for dead, S.H.I.E.L.D. is compromised from by within by an old enemy and Captain America and Black Widow are David Ramsey declared an enemy of the organization. They have to uncover what is going on, why and who is on their side before they can determine how to fight it. And who is The Winter Soldier? Make sure you stay thru the credits for two scenes, one that helps set up the next Avengers movie.

David’s Video Details The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Noah Noah has a dream that the world is going to be flooded so he goes to his grandfather, Methuselah, to seek guidance. He realizes that God wants him to build an ark to save the animals of the world while it is cleansed of mankind. He gets help form an unlikely source, that makes some of the scenes appear to come straight out of The Lord of the Rings, and faces opposition from the local warrior-king. When the rains starts coming down, he gathers this family and tells them the final plan. The special effects are not that special and the story strays from what most of us remember being told.

Thorin and company have to seek the aid of powerful stranger, escape from giant spiders and orcs while escaping from the Elves. When they get to Lonely Mountain it will be up to Bilbo to find the secret door that will get them into Smaug's lair where they will confront the mighty dragon. They meet Legolas and Lady Tauriel who will play a bigger part in the next/final film in the series. Fans of the series will be delighted by how well the filmmakers tie the events into the events of The Lord of the Rings and its a darn good action flick.

The Secret Life ofWalter Mitty

Mitty is working on the final issue of Look magazine but can't find the perfect cover picture that was sent to him by a brilliant but reclusive photographer. He goes in search of the artist which leads him on an adventure that ends in Iceland. Along the way he daydreams of himself doing spectacular things to capture the heart of Cheryl from the office. The film is mostly boring, with very little adventure and even less humor. Rent the original with Danny Kaye if you want to see a good version of the Thurber story. David Ramsey is the President and co-founder of the Phoenix Film Critics Society and a member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (The Critics Choice Awards). Watch his reviews on the CBS 5 Morning News every Friday between 5:30 and 6:30am and on ABC-15’s “Sonoran Living Live” every other Friday. Read more of his DVD reviews at WildAboutMovies. com.
