Wild West Finish to the 2013 Arizona State Poker Championship

Last year’s Arizona State Poker Championship included a real Hollywood endingwith B.G. Gant returning from the deadafterbeing down to Matt Elsby, 30 million in chips to 1 million. When B.G went all-inroughly 6 times in 12 hands to win the championship last year, it was a comeback win for the ages. This year had a different kind of excitement. The 9th Annual 2013 Arizona State Poker Championship, held August 9-13 in The Arena Poker Room at Talking Stick Resort, was more like a “Wild West” shootout as 1,300 aggressive entrants started with $16,000 in chips. Three qualifying sessions overthe weekend reduced the field to a total of 130 players forthe Monday morningsemi-finals. From the very get-go at 9am on Monday, it seemed players were going all-in faster than you could say “deal!”Soon, there were only 8 tables remaining. Poker legend, Phil Hellmuth agreed to emcee the semi-finals on Monday and the finals on Tuesday if he were knocked out of the tournament. When Phil was eliminated on Sunday with a pocket pair against a fatal river card, he took over the microphone and did a great job commentating on the action as the tournament reached its final table. Of course, in between playing the tournament and emceeing it, Phil did have a chance to play in a high-stakes mixed game of Omaha, Stud and Deuce to 7 Triple Draw. I watched that game of Triple Draw for 15 minutes and never saw a call or anyone show their cards—every raise took down the pot.. When the field whittled down to the final 15, Phil began asking for information from the remaining players who seemed to be doing well. One player with a large stack of chips had a great poker name, Justin Riches, and like his name implied, he was certainly going to be “just in riches” very soon. Phil added to the excitement anytime there was an all-in, giving the crowd the mathematical advantage one player had over another before and after the flop, remarking how many outs each player had through the turn. Whoever made the call to invite Phil Hellmuth to this tournament should get a gold star, because Phil was extremely entertaining. 8 ARIZONA PLAYER August 2013

During the meltdown from 15 players to the final 10, Phil kept asking questions to the remaining players, like last names, where they were from, and what they did for a living. It was then that Phil looked at a player named Joe and asked him his last name. Joe turned to Phil and said “Kuether,” to which Hellmuth replied, “Didn’t you play against me in Europe about a month ago?” Joe said, “Yes, I did.” Phil then announced, “Joe won big in that tournament I played in. He also won a WSOP event in San Diego (at Harrah’s Rincon for over $100,000) and has won nearly 2 million in live tournaments in just a few years. This guy is a pro, so keep that in mind—he has to be considered the one to beat!”

Then, just like that, the tournament was down to 10 players—9 men and 1 woman. These lucky players would return Tuesday morning to duke it out until there was a new Arizona State Poker Champion. The final 10:Seat 1 – Justin Riches, Seat 2 – Kelly Minkin, Seat 3 – Zak Kottler, Seat 4 – Ed Clark, Seat 5 – Dan Hirleman, Seat 6 – Nidal Salem, Seat 7 – Jason Bidwell, Seat 8 – Matthew Kursar, Seat 9 – Dave Kaminsky and in Seat 10 – Joe Kuether. When Phil Hellmuth returned to emcee the final table at noon, the final table of 10 had surprisingly already been whittled down to 5! So Phil grabbed the microphone and started keeping everyone informed about chip counts and when there was a new chip leader. The first of the final 5 to meet his demise was Zak Kottler, who went all-in with K/10. Joe called with an Ac/3d and caught a 2, 4 and 5 for the straight and the knockout. Zak finished 5th with a nice paycheck of nearly $78,000.

ever with a check for over $151,000. Her previous biggest win was $3,900. Kelly plans on saving most of the money after playing in a big tournament in Florida coming up very soon.

Next it was Justin who went all-in with a As/10s, and once again Joe called with Ac/10h. The flop was 2c,6c and 3c, giving Joe a possible flush draw. The next card was a 7s—no help to either. But the river card was a 10c, giving Joe the nut flush to take out Justin, who took home almost $89,000 for his 4th place finish. Dan Hirlemanwas next to exit when he went all-in with A/K. Yes, it was Joe who again called, this time with beautiful pocket aces. The flop was K, 6, A, giving Dan 2 pair but trips for Joe.A 2 on the turn and Q on the river changed nothing as Joe’s pocket aces held to knock out Dan in 3rd place and a nice payday of just under $117,000.

Next it was heads up against the only woman at the final table, Kelly Minkin.Heads up against the professional, Joe Kuether, she took down a couple of nice pots, then tried to trap Joe with her Ah/6c when she caught two pair on the flop of 6s, Qs and Ad.She raised, Joe called. On the turn came the 4d, and Kelly went all-in. Joecalled, showing Ac/Ks for top pair, top kicker against Kelly’s two pair. But as luck would have it, Joe caught the Ks for a better2 pair to knock Kelly out in 2nd Place.

Joe Kuether’s 1st Place finish in the 2013 Arizona State Poker Championship is his biggest win: $246,161 plus a beautiful eagle trophy and a one-of-akind Arizona State Poker Championship bracelet. The entire Arena Poker Room staff—from dealers and managers to floor and service personnel—did a flawless job of running the biggest tournament in the state without a hitch. The marketing team at Talking Stick Resort and their ad agency, RIESTER, were incredibly helpful the entire tournament. I also have to add a big thanks to Phil Hellmuth, who has won 13 WSOP Championships and holds the record for the most WSOP cash finishes and most WSOP final tables. The “Poker Brat” was gracious and welcoming in interviews, photo opts and much more with anyone who asked. In short, I gained a lot of respect for this legendary poker icon during the most successful Arizona State Poker Championship in the 9 year history of this tournament—one that promises to be even bigger and better next year for its 10th Anniversary! Here is a list of the top 10 finishers. For a complete list of all 130 finishers just go to the Talking Stick Resort website at talkingstickresort.com.

Ironically, both players hailed from Wisconsin, with Joe still calling it home, but Kelly having since relocated to Scottsdale, where she is currently in law school. Her family was there to cheer her on and celebrate her best finish in a tournament

A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER

by Linda Boyd

The R isk Factor Part II

wo months ago I explained the risk factor, or variance, for deuces wild games. In Part II, of the series you’ll see that you have to look at a different part of the pay schedule to gauge the likelihood of running out of money on non-deuces wild games. It’s important that players have reasonable expectations before choosing a video poker device to play. Table 1.1 9/6 Double Double Bonus

HAND Royal Flush Straight Flush 4 Aces w/2, 3 or 4 Four 2’s, 3’s or 4’s w/A-4 4 Aces Four 2’s, 3’s, or 4’s Four 5’s-Kings *Full House Flush Straight 3 of a Kind 2 Pair Jacks or Better Expected Return (ER) Variance

5-COIN BET 4000 250 2000 800 800 400 250 45 30 20 15 5 5 98.9808% 41.98498

5-COIN BET 4000 250 125 45 30 20 15 10 5 98.5439% 19.51468

*Note that non-deuces wild video poker games derive their labels from the payout for the fullhouse and flush hands, respectively. For example a 9/6 DDB pays the same for all hands except the full-house and flush as does a 9/6 JOB game. The flush pays 9 times the coins wagered on a full house and 6 times the coins wagered on a flush. Understanding Pay Tables: You should always have a look at the game’s pay schedule before inserting money into the device. If it’s a multi-game machine simply select the game and then push the “see pays” button. Be aware that this will give you the amounts returned for each winning hand, but will not indicate either the all-important expected return or the variance. For that you’ll have to bring a table with you to the casino. Free removable tables can be found in my book “The Video Poker Edge”. Tables 1.1 and 1.2: Referring to Tables 1.1 and 1.2 you’ll notice that 9/6JOB has a variance of approximately 19.51 and an ER of 99.54% while 9/6DDB has a variance of 41.98 and an ER of 98.98%. In layman’s terms, it means 9/6 JOB has a higher return and a significantly lower risk to your bankroll. In fact, you are more than twice as likely, even with correct play, to run out of money in 9/6DDB than in 9/6JOB. In my latest YouTube video in conjunction with American Casino Guide I give 10 good reasons to play 9/6 JOB rather than a high risk game. Now, guess which game is infinitely more popular with players? It’s DDB and never mind that the version found in most casinos is 8/5DDB (ER 96.7861% and variance 41.99487, assuming computer-perfect play)! It’s true that getting special 4-of-a-kinds (4OAKS) is great fun, but you shouldn’t have unrealistic expectations or accuse the casino of gaffing the machines if you choose a high risk game. Estimating the Risk: It would be nice if you carried around pay schedules with both the ER and variance, since the casino’s machines have the pay schedule but not the ER or variance, but that’s unrealistic, so what can you do to get a general idea of the game’s risk to your bankroll for non-

deuces games? Check out the payouts for 4OAK hands, especially “special” 4OAKS, like Aces with a kicker in DDB. If these pay large bonuses and frequent hands less, then expect a high variance number. An even bigger give away is the return for two pair. If the game returns double your wager, like any version of JOB as opposed to just even money like any version of DDB then the variance is low and you can hang in there longer. Be sure you don’t confuse the variance with the ER or theoretical return. If the game’s ER is low, say 7/5JOB (ER of 96.1472%), then that’s a good reason not to play even though the variance (19.17910) is low as well. Final Thoughts: If you want to play longer sessions without running out of money, your odds are better with a low variance game. If you choose a non-deuces wild game - look for good versions of JOB or Bonus Poker (BP). To me this means 9/6JOB or 8/5JOB progressive or 8/5BP. Linda Boyd ,a long-time table game player before turning to video poker, also writes for “Southern Gaming” and “Midwest Gaming and Travel” her book, “The Video Poker Edge” includes free removable pay schedules and her free strategy cards for the most popular games. gaming news The Perfect Poker Scenario By Phil Scudella What would be the “Perfect Scenario” in a world where you would like to not only play in the most famous poker tournament in the universe, the “World Series of Poker,” but cash in the top 3% of the field in this prestigious event receiving a huge check of over $40,000, and even more amazing, do all of this with not one penny invested –How in the world could you do something like this? I posed that question to Sam Clements of Maricopa, Arizona in early August. Here’s his answer; He simply played at Harrah’s Ak-Chin poker room a few times a week in a “live” game during the months of February, March and April. Sam’s total hours of “Live” play over that period was just a little over 160. That’s averaging about 12 hours of “live” play per week. It was then in early May that Steve Murphy, Harrah’s poker room manager was excited to tell Sam that he had qualified (because of his hours played) as one the semi-finalists for the WSOP satellite event on Sat. May 18th. Steve mentioned that there would be two squads, a 10am and 2:30pm, and 15 players from each squad would qualify for finals on Sun, May 19th. The 30 finalists would play down to the Final 5 and those 5 players would cash, with the 1st Place Prize being A $10,000 seat to the World Series of Poker Main Event at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas along with $1,000 in expense money! On that Sunday morning when Sam left for the tournament, he told Lola, his wife of 31 years, that if he returned before 1pm, he didn’t make the cut to the top 5. At about 3pm, Lola heard Sam pull into the garage, and went out to

12 ARIZONA PLAYER August 2013

meet him, but he didn’t look very excited, then he looked at Lola, slammed the car door and yelled, “Baby – I’m going to Vegas!” So, without paying a dime to enter thatWSOP Satellite Tournament, Sam pocketed $1,000 cash and a $10,000 seat to the World Series of Poker Main Event!Sam headed for Vegas and played at Noon on July 8th, Session 1C, He played longer than he had ever played in 1 day – until 1am Tuesday morning, when the session ended and Sam had about $23,000 in Tournament chips. He returned on Wednesday at noon played until 1am Thursday and his chip count had increased to $81,000. At this point, there was no extra time off, he had to catch some sleep and return at noon the same day, where one really physically beat Sam struggled until 1am Friday, but got a lift when his chip count totaled over $193,000. Friday noon came way too fast, but he played well and ended the session at 1am Saturday with over $275,000 in chips. Now the big day, Saturday at noon, where he was on one of the WSOP televised tables on ESPN. He was nervous to say the least, but won some big pots to increase his stack to $750,000 – but then disaster, he lost two huge calls and an All-In to knock him out in 189th place to take home that WSOP check for $42,990. This day was really special for Sam, because Kara Scott, with the ESPN broadcast team (and a woman he had told friends he would love to meet someday) interviewed him. This never flustered poker player, so awestruck by this striking beauty, forgot to ask for a copy of the interview, a photo of the two of them together to show his poker pals or even just an autographed photo of her. Sam Clements moved to Maricopa 3 years ago from Kansas City, MO. He originally came from a suburb of Detroit and worked for Ford Motor Company, but transferred to Kansas City when the plant there closed. And yes, Sam Clements says he is related to the famous Mark Twain – Samuel L Clemens, and has visited Hannibal, Missouri many times, the town where Mark Twain grew up.

Play at Full table or not?

irst, let me debunk the myth that the actions of the other players at a table determine whether you are going to win or lose. The by TJ players that subscribe to this theory usually play Jorgensen marginal basic strategy at best. After the hand is over, these players will point out that if a player wouldn’t have done this we would have all won, or will take credit for everyone winning the hand since they took the dealers 5 that would have given him 21. The truth is that you tend to remember the hand that the player took the dealers bust card that caused everyone to lose, and forget when a stupid play caused you to win. In the long run the way the other players play their hand has no effect on your long term results - they help you as much as hurt you, so it balances out. If you are new to the game of blackjack a full table can be helpful because it slows the game down, and gives you more time to make the correct play for your given hand. Typically you will play about 50 to 60 hands per hour at a full table. If you are playing perfect basic strategy the casino has a long term advantage over you and this means that you will lose less money per hour at a full table. If you are not playing perfect basic strategy - you are giving more of your money away. For example; if you stand on 12 against a dealers up card of 2, you will lose 29.3% of all the money you bet in that situation. If your average bet is $10 it costs you $2.93 to stand. By hitting, you reduce your loss by $.40 or $2.53 per hand. If you play just four hours a week the amount you donate in this situation may surprise you. Over a year’s time you will play about 12,000 hands, and you will see 12 against a 2 about 75 times. Standing instead of hitting your 12 against a dealer up card of 2 over a year’s time will cost a player about $30 a year. Do you want to give your favorite casino $30 more a year? Do you think they need an extra $30? If you’re scared of busting or “taking the dealer’s bust card’” you’re giving the casino a gift each and every time you stand.

16 ARIZONA PLAYER August 2013

This is only one example of what it costs you to misplay a hand. Every time you deviate from basic strategy you are giving more of your money to the casino. How much? This chart demonstrates the amount you give to the casino by misplaying your hand. (Chart is based on 4 hours of play per week – with an average bet of $10) WRONG PLAY

Keep in mind that this is only a partial list of misplayed hands. Can you imagine the amount that is needlessly given away by a “hunch” player? These are also the players that complain that they never win and don’t know why. Well now they know. Hopefully this chart is a wake-up call to those of you that know basic strategy, but play hunches and gut feelings some of the time. The difference between a player who makes money playing blackjack, and those who don’t is simple. The perfect basic strategy player will double on “11” verses a dealers “10” twelve times in a row and lose all twelve, but on the thirteenth time - will do it again, because he has complete faith in basic strategy. Hunches and intuition have no place in the game of Blackjack. T.J. Jorgensen has been a professional Blackjack player for over 20 years. He is well known for his live tournament play. He has competed against, and beaten, some of the top tournament players in the world and has won the prestigious World Series of Blackjack. lottery news Her “Bucket List” Realized!

He drove his way to winning

Barbara Buss of Chandler stopped at a neighborhood store to purchase a cold drink. While there, she bought two Powerball tickets for the draw of July 20 and put them in her purse. She finally found time on July 25, to sit down and check her numbers. To her amazement, she found five matching numbers. She wasn’t quite sure how much the ticket was worth. After checking it several times, she still wasn’t sure if it was $100,000, or $1,000,000. When she showed the ticket to her husband, he suggested they immediately drive to the Lottery to check the ticket. After the customer service representative verified the ticket, Barbara and her husband found out that they were, indeed, Arizona’s latest millionaires. After trying several times, she finally was able to reach her daughter to share the good news. Her daughter’s initial response was, “I’m so glad I’m an only child.” A few years ago, Barbara made a list of things she would like to do if she ever won the lottery, but she hasn’t looked at the list in a very long time. However, there are a couple of things she knows she and her husband would like to do: take a vacation and remodel their kitchen. Barbara jokingly said that perhaps now her husband will finish restoring the 1950 Ford convertible that was supposed to be her birthday present 15 years ago. The couple is going to meet with their financial advisor for investment advice for the rest of their winnings. The winning ticket was purchased at Circle K, 1995 W. Chandler Blvd

MohamadFejleh drives all over the state of Arizona in his job as a truck driver. He considers himself a workaholic, and his job keeps him busy. During the course of his travels, wherever he stops for gasoline is where he buys his Lottery tickets that day. And on a lucky day in June, the 21st of June to be exact, Mohamad purchased six QuickPick ticketsfor the “Weekly Winnings” for that night. When he got home at 3am, he had something to eat, then checked his numbers on the computer. When he discovered that one of his QuickPicktickets matched all of the winning numbers for that night’s drawing, he was certain it was a mistake. He hesitated, but then woke up his wife and had her check it. Mohamad said, “Four eyes are better than two.” All the numbers matched. At that point, he signed the back of the ticket. Neither of them got much sleep that night, and they both had to go to work in the morning. MrFejlehchose the lump sum payout of $52,000, after taxes. His plans are simple: pay off some bills and take a small vacation. He is also planning to send his wife back home to visit her family. Mohamadsaid he plans to keep playing, as he believes you can win more than once. The winning ticket was purchased at QuikTrip, 6702 W. McDowell

HORSIN’ AROUND

Sun, Sand, Success and the Beach

ith Del Mar in full swing, by there are a Brian Mulligan few tidbits that will be passed on here that hopefully will be able to help players line their pockets with cash this summer. For those longing for a road trip or even if you are just playing the horses online, you could do much worse that taking that sweet freeway to Del Mar to enjoy, sun, sand, beautiful people and the fastest horses this side of the Mississippi.

One thing about the stomping grounds known as Del Mar, and it has been this way for at least 3 decades, is that you cannot make a favorite too short on the morning line. Chalk gets pounded here. It may be because it is a resort track and there are a ton of kids in the grandstand and in the infield or maybe it’s just the concept of trying too hard to cash a ticket. Only the strong survive and to survive you have to pay attention to where the winners are coming from on a daily basis. Give horses that have raced at the track a huge edge. The owners that make the trek down for the meet, want action and you cannot keep a decent claiming horse in your stable unless you padlocked him to the stall. Pay attention to upper echelon sophomores that have been freshened for this meet. The fact that they have not been through a hard grind all year gives them an opportunity to put 2 or 3 super races together against a tired crew. As far as the turf is concerned generally speaking the Del Mar course can play a tad heavy early in the meet but as the days go on, it will get packed down and speed will hold better. One trainer that should be carefully watched is Peter Miller. Miller has some runners stabled at the nearby San Luis Rey Downs and had a breakout meeting a few seasons ago at Del Mar and last year won with 21 of his 104 starters. He is a homeboy, he was born right up the road at Carlsbad, and as a 24 ARIZONA PLAYER August 2013

youngster he went to jockey school before the hormones kicked in and he grew. Peter learned from one of the best trainers ever in Charlie Whittingham as he was around stars like Palace Music and Greinton back in the day. The guy is great with youngsters, has won the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante and gamblers could do much worse than getting on the Miller Time bandwagon. Currently, Miller is fourth in the trainer standings and has won with 8 of his first 48 starters. Granted, a few weeks does not make a career or a stone-cold winning verdict but players should try to take a few clues from what has happened at Del Mar already this season. Traditionally, the turf course plays a little deep early in the meet at Del Mar and that’s the way it started. Stalkers had a clear edge on the turf while tactical speed was pivotal on the Polytrack. Northern California shippers have done well at Del Mar and often get away on the tote board. Being ship shape at Del Mar this season can bring a whole different meaning as again the legendary seaside track has installed a ‘ship and win’ policy and online sports betting site players should give extra attention to interlopers. If a trainer starts a horse this summer at Del Mar that last ran out of state and the horse wins, Del Mar will pony up an extra 33% to the purse and also give those owners an extra $1,000 for just starting.

Obviously, this is a ploy to get fresh stock to the track and it makes tremendous sense as with Del Mar occurring later in the season, a lot of the usual suspects racing in Southern California are tired and sometimes worse for wear. Both the $1,000 and the 33% boost will apply just to the runner’s first local start. And obviously, first-time starters don’t qualify. What this means to Maiden Special Weight runners can be significant. If the current purse of a MSW is $75,000, the purse will be boosted to $100,000 for a shipper. A $20,000 claimer that runs normally for $38,000 - will be competing for $50,000 if a shipper succeeds. That is not chump change. As far as the bettors are concerned, this just gives connections of shippers yet another reason to fire first crack at the beach. If that is not incentive to watch shippers, it’s hard to come to any other conclusion. Lastly, if you are lucky enough to visit Del Mar this summer, don’t dare leave early but grab a cold margarita as you watch the pretty people leave the venue. The sights are well worth it. travel Willcox & Apple Annie’s Orchard by Phil Scudella I remember summers end growing up in the tiny town of Frankfort, Illinois with fruit trees were everywhere, ripe and ready for eating; delicious apples, pears, plums, peaches and cherries, plus sweet corn, watermelons, pumpkins and lots more in family gardens or fields ... or like in my case, old man Braymeyer's garden. How well I remember getting chased with my pals by old man Braymeyer, yelling “Get the hell out of here, damn you kids!” Those days - I will long remember. Now, how does this fit in with Wilcox, Arizona? Willcox holds a special place in my heart, it was my first radio job in Arizona at KHIL – Now, I didn’t spend much time there, but I’ve stayed in Arizona for 40+ years. We do return to Wilcox, especially in the fall, most sometimes just the two of us, other times with kids and grandkids as we take off to where “The Thing” is, and maybe stop to check out the “alien creature” or whatever it is, then it’s on to Apple Annie’s Orchard in Wilcox for some great apples, peaches and pears off the trees and ice cold fresh squeezed apple juice. If you have never been there, it’s quite an experience, with lots to see and do, including great food and of course terrific desserts. Here’s a quick list of events coming up; The Apple Harvest Celebration; Aug 31-Sept 2 (Labor Day weekend) plus Sept 7-8 &14-15, 7:30am – 5:00pm Celebrate the peak of the apple season with tree-ripened Red Delicious, Golden Delicious and Rome Beautys. Yes, you can pick your own apples, and don’t miss the “All You Can Eat” pancake breakfast (7-10am) served with hot apple topping or cider syrup. There are free wagon rides to the orchards for picking. The peach harvest is also going on and the peach crop is amazing. DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR Elysium -

In the future the rich and powerful live on an orbiting space station called Elysium, while the rest of the population live an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Max has always dreamed of going to Elysium and after an industrial accident needs to get there to by save his life. A local crime lord offers him David Ramsey a way to get there and in desperation he takes it despite it being a suicide mission. The Defense Sectary of Elysium takes her job very seriously and destroys any unauthorized ship approaching the space station. “Elysium” is a political statement disguised as a sci-fi film. It is heavy handed in its immigration and economic equality point of view. While most good science fiction films have a moral statement to make this one goes over the top and it obscures the action and humanity of the characters.

We’re the Millers David is a low level drug dealer who has is stash and bankroll stolen much to the dismay of this distributor. Owing a lot of money that he cannot repay he agrees to smuggle some marijuana into the country from Mexico. He thinks that if he looks like a family man he has a better chance of getting past customs at the border. He sets about recruiting a fake family, a stripper as his wife, a runaway as his daughter and a neighbor as his son. Things go just fine until he finds out they have actually stolen from a drug lord and have to run from him and his men. This crime-comedy has some action but it/s mostly a comedy and, at time, a pretty funny one. ‘We’re the Millers” may not be a classic but it does have its funny moments.

David’s Video Details Mud

Two boys discover a loner on a deserted island near their homes and become entangled in his world. While there is some romance and some action this is a film about relationships, man/ woman, boy/girl, father/son, husband/wife, plus friends and makes them all so real you feel for the characters. Everything about this film is exceptional from the writing to the direction. McConaughey has never been better and the rest of the cast is just as good. “Mud” is the best film of the first half of the year and I hope it’s not forgotten at awards time

Oblivion

Jack is one of the few humans left on earth after a devastating war with an aliens left the earth ravaged and uninhabitable. We won the war but lost the planet. Jack and his partner repair drones that keep giant machines working that harvest the Earth’s resources for the survivors on Jupiter’s moon and keep the few aliens from destroying them. When a ship crashes to Earth Jack discovers a disturbing cargo that causes him to question everything. “Oblivion” is a first rate sci-fi film with great special effects and a compelling unique story.

Pain & Gain

Daniel is a bodybuilder and personal trainer who wants to live the good life but needs money. He comes up with a plan to steal everything from a client and enlists the aid of two of his bodybuilder friends. Unfortunately, they have more muscle than brains and things quickly get out of control. There are some very funny moments in what is mostly a comedic caper movie until the end when it gets violent. Based on a true story “Pain & Gain” is director Michael Bay’s best film since “Bad Boys.” David Ramsey is the President and co-founder of the Phoenix Film Critics Society and a member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (The Critics Choice Awards). Watch him on the CBS 5 Morning News every Friday around 6:20am and on ABC-15’s “Sonoran Living Live” every other Friday at 11am. Read his DVD reviews at WildAboutMovies.com. DITKA’S….DA PLACE TO BE

Da Bears! Da Coach! Da Ambiance! The legendary former Chicago Bears football player and head coach, Mike Ditka, has brought his signature steakhouse to the West Valley…making its home in the new VeeQuiva Hotel &Casino. Ditka’s fits perfectly in the new resort with its elegant yet bold ambiance. When you walk into Ditka’s, you know that you will be getting an amazing meal and a great experience. The atmosphere is like being in an old-school Chicago steakhouse. The bar is nicely separated from the dining room and serves up some great concoctions… more on that coming up. Hanging on the wall is a giant mural featuring celebrities such as Ernie Banks, Michael Jordan, Mike Ditka, and many, other famous sports legends. It really added a great focal point to the dining room as I could not seem to revert myself from constantly looking to see what other faces I could recognize. We started the meal with a drink that was recommended by our server - the “Raspberry Smash.” It’s a martini featuring raspberry vodka and muddled red and black raspberries. It was absolutely amazing! It is definitely one of those drinks that, you have to be care with, because you can down 3 or 4 of these tasty concoctions before you realize – you’re drinking martinis! The bar menu also includes other signature martinis and cocktails primarily featuring gin and bourbon, if either of those options are more to your liking.

As an appetizer, we decided to go with the Coach’s Pot Roast Nachos. They are exactly what you would imagine…tortilla chips topped with cheddar jack cheese, tomatoes, jalapenos, scallions, sour cream, and an extremely tender pot roast. The pot roast had a very sweet flavor to it which offered a great counter balance to the flavors typically associated with nachos. Is it wrong that I wanted the entire plate of nachos to be smothered in brown gravy to really push this dish over the edge? Overall, it was great, but very filling start to the meal - even when shared between two people. For my entrée, I decided to go with the Twin Fillet and Crab Medallions. It featured two 4oz filets and two jumbo lump crab cakes. The dish was seasoned with lemon butter as well as a green peppercorn veal sauce. The filet medallions were perfectly cooked to the medium rare that I ordered and were incredibly tender. The crab cakes really did not have that typical “cake” texture to them, so that really made this, the standout part of the meal for me I devoured them! They were packed full of huge chunks of jumbo lump crab meat with the minimal amount of breading serving as a perfect seasoning and binding agent. I also had the opportunity to steal some of the Roasted “Bistro Style” Chicken from my dining partner. From the little bit that I sampled, this is definitely something that I would order during a future visit and it is also one of the most moderately priced options on the menu - a great deal for

what you get. The natural pan drippings and crispy yet sticky roasted skin made this dish a real winner. To finish off our meal, we decided on the White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake… another recommendation from our server. It had a thick graham cracker crust that was the perfect complement to the white chocolate cheesecake. There was a fresh raspberry puree drizzled on the plate that provided just the right amount of tartness to the dessert. When all was said and done, the bill came to about $110 for the two of us. Considering we had a martini, a large appetizer, two entrees, and dessert, I think that this was a steal for what you get and definitely rivals the other high-end steakhouses in the Valley. Ditka’s is a must for anybody looking for a great meal to suit any occasion.
