Promotion Equity
ost people are up to date on topics like home equity, meaning the difference between what your home by is worth and what you Linda Boyd owe. However, most never consider the equity they have in a casino promotion, even if they are frequent players. It’s really an important topic if you play in an Arizona casino that has good promotional events, and most do. Virtual Tickets: Not so long ago you would fill in contest entries by hand and feel relief when allowed to use address labels. It irked me when some scored advantages by making interesting folds in their entries, proven to increase the likelihood of having the ticket drawn. Guess I could have done the same thing but lacked the patience. Now we all have virtual tickets based on our level of play--nothing could be fairer. Video Poker Choice: You will earn significantly more entries as a video poker player if you select less volatile games, like Jacks or Better (JOB) instead of riskier games like Double Double Bonus (DDB). Just make sure you select a good version, like 9/6 JOB or a progressive 8/5 JOB. The reason is you can play considerably longer on a given bankroll when you are returned double your wager for a frequent hand like two pair. LOTTERY NEWS FANTASY 5 MONEY STAYS IN ARIZONA
THE MANAGER WAS RIGHT!
A Payson woman’s loyalty to Arizona Lottery games where all the money stays in Arizona found her loyalty to the Fantasy 5 game paid off to the tune of $135,000. She always buys a multi-draw Quick Pick ticket from whatever store she happens to be near at the time. This time, her lucky purchase for the draw of May 27, was from the Giant service station on the Beeline Highway in Payson. The big winner sais she and her husband have been playing Fantasy 5 and The Pick since they moved to Arizona from back east about five years ago to take advantage of the weather and be closer to family. Neither of them plays Powerball or Mega Millions because they only play the games where all the money stays here in Arizona. The couple love living here, and it gives them time to spend with their grandchildren. Her husband also finds time to work on old cars – his favorite past time. What are they planning to do with the winnings? They plan to pay off bills and share the rest with their family.
A Prescott man took the advice of the store manager where he purchases his Arizona Lottery tickets and is now $100,000 richer. The winning Sky High Crossword Scratchers ticket was purchased at Woody’s Food Store in Prescott at 501 Copper Basin Rd. The store manager recommended the ticket to his customer who purchased several of them and took them home to scratch. When he saw the $100,000 in the box, he was so surprised he sat there in shock. Then he called the store manager to tell him about his win, but the manager thought he was kidding. When he realized that his customer wasn’t kidding – he offered to drive him to Phoenix to redeem the ticket. The winner thought about it for about a second and said “Let’s do it!” The big winner is a cab driver and plays Scratchers almost every day as he considers them entertainment. He won $500 three days prior to this huge win and said, “My return on Scratchers has been good.” His advice to players is to “Keep playing them – that’s the only way you can win.”
HE NEARLY FORGOT ABOUT THE TICKET
7-ELEVEN CLERK GETS A BIG TIP!
A Phoenix man, who works as an event planner, had recently borrowed $30 from a friend and went to the ATM and withdrew $40 so he could pay him back. He stopped at a store to get change and used the leftover $10 to purchase five Quick Picks for the Powerball with the PowerPlay. He put the ticket in the glove compartment of his car and forgot about it. About two weeks after the June 22 drawing, he remembered he had bought a ticket and left it in the car. He checked the ticket online - Then he checked it about five more times before he convinced himself that this ticket that he had almost forgot about - was worth a cool….One Million Dollars! He used the self-scanner at the store just to be sure, signed the back of the ticket and went straight to the Lottery. The ticket was purchased at a Circle K in Phoenix at 10612 N. Cave Creek Rd. The new Millionaire plans to invest his winnings - for his retirement and college for his children.
June 15, 2011, turned out to be a very lucky day for a Scottsdale man when he scratched off a Deluxe Crossword Scratchers ticket and discovered he’d won $100,000! The winning ticket was purchased in Phoenix at the 7-Eleven, 3912 E. Camelback Rd. When he first scratched the ticket and read the play instructions, he didn’t think there were enough red words to be a big winner. After reviewing the ticket again, it finally registered that he really was holding a ticket worth one hundred thousand dollars! The winner who wished to remain anonymous has definite plans for his winnings. First on his list is to pay off his car, put a down payment on a house, pay back a loan his parents gave him and give $1,000 to the clerk who sold him the winning ticket.

TJ’S BLACKJACK CORNER
Should You PlaY at a Full table?
irst of all let me debunk the myth that the actions of the other players at a table determine whether by TJ you are going to win or Jorgensen lose. The players that subscribe to this theory usually play marginal basic strategy at best. After the hand is over these players will then point out that if a player had (taken or not taken a card) we would have all won, or will take credit for everyone winning the hand since they took the dealers 5 - that would have given him 21. The truth is - you tend to remember the hand when a player took the dealers bust card that caused everyone to lose, and forget when a stupid play caused you to win. In the long run the way the other players play their hand has no effect on your long term results - they help you just as much as they hurt you, so it all balances out. If you are new to the game of blackjack a full table can be helpful because it slows the game down, and gives you more time to make the correct play for your given hand. Typically you will play about 50 to 60 hands per hour at a full table. If you are new to card counting a full table gives you more time to convert your running count to your true count, and to figure the appropriate size bet for the upcoming hand. Additionally you will tend to blend in with the crowd so your not branded as

a card counter. If you are not a card counter and playing perfect basic strategy the casino has a long term advantage over you and this means you will lose less money per hour at a crowded table. The disadvantage to playing at a full table as a card counter is the game is slow. Since I have a long term advantage over the casino I want to play as many hands per hour, more hands mean more money. If I can get one on one with the dealer I can get around 200 hands per hour, and additionally if I want to spread to two hands I have an open spot next to me. However more players may not always mean less money. For example I was playing at a local casino at a $10 table with 2 other players that were betting $200 a hand. When my true count sky rocketed to plus eight, I didn’t really worry about attracting a lot of attention when I jumped my bet from $40 to $120, because I was still the small better at the table. Being able to do this instead of slowly parlaying my bet as the count rose, was a big advantage. I’m happy to report I walked with over $2000. Another advantage as a counter to playing with a couple other players is that if you get a negative count it may rebound faster because they take a lot of the bad cards. If you do get a good count, you can also spread to two hands to take more good cards. It does tend to make the other players think that your messing up the cards, but you can always reply that the way your luck has been going you need to mess up the cards. Which brings me
to another point, should you play two hands. If you are not a card counter the answer is no, the only thing that will do is get you to your expected loss faster. If you are a card counter you can spread to two hands if your count is high enough, it is a good way to increase your bets without making one large bet. The following is a chart for playing two hands with the true count. TRUE COUNT Below 0
ACTUAL BET sinGle-hAnd tWo hAnds $ $ 5 0 $ $ 5 0 1 $ $ 10 10 2 $ $ 20 15 3 $ $ 30 25 4 $ $ 40 35 5 $ $ 50 40 6 $ $ 60 50 7 For me the ideal situation is one on one with the casinos fastest dealer. There isn’t a dealer on planet earth who can deal faster than I can count. However your bankroll can have huge swings and you have to be mentally prepared for that, but when you win you win big. Until next time I hope you play winning Blackjack. T.J. Jorgensen has been a professional blackjack player for over 20 years. He is well known for his live tourna ment play. He has competed against, and beaten, some of the top tournament players in the world. He has also won the prestigious World Series of Blackjack His book, “Beating the Casino at Their Own Game,” is available through his web site www .freewebs.com/tjsblackjackcorner or by e-mail TJ4justice1@msn.com

FROM A WOMAN’S POINT OF VIEW
It’s a LadIes Weekend at C asIno a rIzona
very year in May, June and July the center of excitement is in Las Vegas with the World Series of Poker. Here in the Valley of the Sun, August and September are the important months on every poker player’s calendar because the year’s two biggest poker events take place at Casino Arizona. In August the 7th Annual Arizona State Championship Texas Hold-em tournament will take place. This five day poker event has an estimated total prize pool of $1,000,000 with a trophy, championship ring and bragging rights for being the “Best in the West”. For the ladies however, the highlight of the year is in September when the 6th Annual Arizona State Ladies Poker Championship No-Limit Texas Hold will take place on September 10, 11& 12. The buy-in for this event is $200 + $25 service fee for $8500 in tournament chips. A $10 Staff Appreciation will buy you an additional $2500 in tournament chips. The estimated price pool for this event is $100,000 based on 500 entries. 250 players start on Saturday, September 10th at 10am and 250 players start on Sunday, September 11th at 10am. Finals begin at noon on September 12th for the championship title. This year’s first place prize is estimated to be $25,870.00 along with a beautiful hand-crafted trophy and a championship bracelet. The trophies this year were created by the artist Schoop. They are beautiful examples of Native American art and are guaranteed to be a keepsake for years to come.
26 ARIZONA PLAYER August 2011
If you have never played in one of these tournaments you are missing an exciting poker experience. It’s truly a must do on the list for every woman who loves poker. This year promises more excitement for all. The caliber of play among the participants has escalated to a professional level. The game is fast and furious with aggressive play being the norm. If you want to challenge your game and bring it to the next level - don’t miss this year’s event. Sign-ups have already started, so don’t miss out on one of the best poker experiences in the valley for women. Sign up in the Poker Room or call (480) 850-7734. Single table satellites for the event are currently being held in the poker room. So gather your poker pals and come over to Casino Arizona any day for your chance to win a seat to the championship event. Call the poker room for details. Why not come to Talking Stick Resort and make it a girl’s getaway weekend. Play a little poker and then visit the spa or one of the great restaurants on the property. Talking Stick Resort is truly a gem in the middle of Scottsdale with so much to offer to everyone. It is truly the total gaming experience. I am looking forward to meeting up with some of my old poker friends and meeting some new ones. As the old song goes “See You in September”. GAMING NEWS ARIZONA LOTTERY LAUNCHES NEW CAMPAIGNS The Arizona Lottery launched two new general market and multicultural branding campaigns this month, capitalizing on the dream of winning a large, life-changing jackpot and the availability of smaller, more frequent wins. The campaign dubbed “Wonderful Life” is aimed at new and existing Arizona Lottery players who dream of a big win and prefer to play large jackpot games, such as Powerball, Mega Millions and Arizona’s own jackpot game, The Pick. Two versions of the spot were shot to appeal to as many players’ hopes and dreams as possible. Both “Wonderful Life” spots provide a retrospective look at how a jackpot win can significantly change an Arizona player’s life. The first spot was shot against the breathtaking backdrop of Sonoita, Arizona and focuses on the owner of a ranch reminiscing about his winning streak in life, which all began with the purchase of an Arizona Lottery ticket. The second spot was shot in Phoenix and documents the evolution of a woman’s dream to open a pet shelter, all made possible by her wonderful winning ticket. Alternating air time with the “Wonderful Life” spots, the campaign referred to as “Hall of Winners,” plays into the gratification of smaller, more frequent wins. It capitalizes on the excitement of winning any Arizona Lottery prize by eternalizing each player’s winning pose as a statue in the Hall of
Winners. A similar spot was shot in Spanish, which captures winners’ reactions in portraits rather than statues, to be more culturally relevant. The Hall of Winners campaign includes two spots, one with a man checking his Arizona Lottery ticket on the couch while eating a bowl of cereal and the other with a woman playing a Scratchers ticket in her car at the gas station. Both commercials employ a humorous approach to convey the excitement of winning an Arizona Lottery prize, leaving the viewer with the urge to purchase a ticket for their own place in the Hall of Winners. “Whether it is one large life-changing win or smaller, more frequent wins, Arizona Lottery prizes make positive differences in our players’ lives and the communities in which they live,” said Jeff Hatch-Miller, executive director of the Arizona Lottery. “The concepts for our new branding campaigns illustrate the impact of an Arizona Lottery win and demonstrate the happiness that the Arizona Lottery brings to its players.” The new television and radio spots were created by Arizona Lottery’s Agency of Record, E.B. Lane, and multicultural advertising agency partner, Lopez Negrete Communications, Inc. To view the new Arizona Lottery commercials, please visit www.youtube.com/user/ arizonalottery.

DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR
rise of the planet of the apes
Will (James Franco) has been hard at work on a cure for Alzheimer’s for five years and now he is testing on chimpanzees. His star chimp, Bright by Eyes, is exhibiting amazing David Ramsey results but when something goes terribly wrong and the project is shut down. While packing up Will finds Bright Eyes’ new-born baby, Caesar, and takes him home. Will raises Caesar but keeps him out of sight. Caesar appears to have inherited the advanced genes given his mother. He is able to communicate using sign language and shows incredible intelligence. While Will is at work Caesar is taken by animal control which has a surprisingly large number of apes in custody. Once Caesar takes charge of the other apes it’s only a matter of time and some head scratching plot moves. The story is very good until the end but by that time you might not notice or care about how many apes there are in San Francisco or the other inconsistencies. The new twist does make for a perfect set-up for the reboot of the Planet of the Apes series.
cowboys anD aliens Its 1873, a cowboy (Daniel Craig) wakes up in the desert with a strange manacle on his wrist and no memory. He makes his way to the nearest town only to find out he is a wanted man, named Jake. He ends up in jail and is about to be transferred to the Federal Marshall when the local cattle baron, Col. Dolarhyde (Harrison Ford) arrives and demands the sheriff hand him over. Before there can be a confrontation the town is attacked by strange flying machines. They take some townspeople including Dolarhyde’s son while they bomb the city. Jake is able to use the manacle on his wrist to bring down one of the ships. Dolarhyde organizes a posse to follow it at daylight. A mysterious woman (Olivia Wilde) claims that Jake knows where the townspeople have been taken even though he doesn’t remember. They set out and are joined by a gang of outlaws and a group of Apache warriors in what turns out to be a showdown with an alien force. Cowboys and Aliens has the elements of a good western with the standard sci-fi stuff thrown in. While not a classic - it is a lot of fun.

A macaw baby named Blu is captured and smuggled to Minnesota where he is lost. He is found by a young girl, Linda, who raises him with love. Fifteen years later, Blu is a domesticated and intelligent bird that does not fly but lives a comfortable life with Linda. One day, a clumsy Brazilian ornithologist, Tulio, visits Linda and explains that Blu is the last male of his species and he has a female called Jewel in Rio de Janeiro. He takes Linda and Blu to Rio de Janeiro to save the species. When they get there Blu makes friends with local birds. Then during Carnival, Blu and Jewel are kidnapped by smugglers. With the help of their bird friends Jewel and Blu escape but are chased by the smugglers and their henchmen through Rio. While the songs are not memorable - it is a funny story for children of all ages..

Graeme and Clive are English Sci-Fi geeks who have dreamed of attending Comic Con their entire lives. They have a great time as at the Con and then they rent a RV to travel to all the major UFO sites in the Western United States. Near Area 51 they witness a car crash and when they stop to render aid they meet an alien named Paul. He is a prototypical little gray alien who speaks English, smokes and has an attitude. He running is being pursued by a relentless government agent. Graeme and Clive agree to help him. While there are a few laughs - it could have been so much more.
thor
The mighty Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is kicked out of Asgard and banished to Earth by this father Oden (Anthony Hopkins). His brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) is behind his fall from favor and plans to bring his father’s kingdom down. Thor arrives on Earth without his powers but not without his arrogance and swagger. Meanwhile, a group of scientists are tracking what they believe to be a gateway to Earth from another planet – and they are right. They find Thor but his famous hammer has been quarantined by S.H.E.I. L. D. Thor wants to get back home and needs his hammer to do so. He goes after it but is soon humbled (temporarily) by his lack of power. There is too much time on Asgard and not enough time making you care about the characters. Thor does save Earth but it’s a pretty weak villain. Thor is another member of Marvel’s Avengers and this is another set-up to next year’s film of the same name. There is a lot of good stuff but not enough. David Ramsey is the Pr esident and co-founder of the Phoenix Film Critics Society and a member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (The Critics Choice A wards). Watch for him on the CBS 5 Morning News every Friday just after 6am and on ABC-15’s “Sonoran Living Live” every other Friday at 11am. Read mor e of his DVD r eviews at WildAboutMovies.com. TRAVEL SUMMER FUN – FROM THE COAST TO THE COLORADO RIVER! By Teresina Vejar What a summer vacation! It started with one long drive from Phoenix to Los Angeles where gas was well over four dollars a gallon. We stayed in a hotel that advertised it was “just 15 minutes from Disneyland” yet the drive to the home of Mickey Mouse, Goofy and the gang took over an hour!
But our eyes lit up when we arrived at our final destination; Disneyland, “the happiest place on earth.” Then again, it is also home to the longest lines on earth. Although we did have a good time spending two days in the lands of wonder, it was anything but relaxing. So we decided to kick back and hang out at the world famous Venice Beach for some fun people watching - but it was a little cold for the river rat that I am - So I had a marvelous idea, let’s ditch Los Angeles and head to the Colorado River in Parker! There, we could actually experience some real fun in the sun and on the river. We had been there a few years before and had even done
some parasailing. We chose the distinguished BlueWater Resort & Casino in Parker, Arizona as our next destination. We arrived late Friday afternoon and the friendly staff at the hotel check in answered all of our questions. The hotel room was even bigger than the one in LA and had an amazing view of the marina and river that easily outpaced the one in Cali. After a quick change to swimwear, my six year old son and two older children played at the indoor water park for hours - basically until the pool closed at 11pm. On Saturday we spent the entire day on the river on Jet skis we rented from some really nice folks at Resort Rentals. The kids and I played on the river till the sun went down. That evening we went back to BlueWater Resort for food, fun and gambling.
My first stop was the Players Club where I got a “Player’s Club” card. I was excited to learn I got free slot play as well as a chance to win free gas for a year when I signed up. And as if that wasn’t enough, there was even a buffet discount just for having the card. I was already winning and I hadn’t even left the Players Club - it doesn’t get any better than that. If I could do it over again, I would have skipped LA and spent the extra three days on the cool Colorado River in Parker! Teresina Vejar is the daughter of Arizona Player Publisher Phil Scudella. Her motto is “Work hard and play hard.” She manages a Safeway Store in Peoria - but when she is not working; she loves heavy metal concerts, restoring classic Chevy Camaro’s and travel. She also enjoys dancing and was a member of a dance team that earned the honor - Dance Masters of America National Champions.

Zeb’s Little Dilemma Old Zeb the prospector came down from the hills to see a doctor even though he felt it was unnecessary - he just wanted to get a doctor’s opinion about a small problem. “Doc,” Old Zeb explained “I have a small gas leak – But I am the only one who knows about it.” He went on, “You see Doc, I seem to have an excess amount of gas daily”…But he said – “the gas I release doesn’t bother anyone because - these little releases are silent, and they are odorless as well.” “So you see” Zeb said, holding his hands palms up, “I realize it’s not a serious problem – but I

would like to do something about it - if possible, that’s why I came here. Why, I even let out a couple of little gassers as I walked into your examination room - just to prove my point, so what do you think?” The Doctor with tears in his eyes, started shaking his head from side to side – then he placed his hand on his new patients shoulder and raised his voice noticeably “ Zeb” he said, gasping for air “I going to set you up for TWO operations – ONE FOR YOUR EARS and ONE FOR YOUR NOSE! Now get out of my office - before you peel all the paint off my walls.”
It was the middle of summer , and Dave and Sandy’s teenage son was off at band camp, so they decided to tidy up his room. After cleaning the room making the bed with clean linens, they noticed something under the mattress and pulled out several “S & M” & “Bondage” magazines. Sandy was furious, “Just what do you plan on doing about this Dave?” she screamed. David paused for a moment, then replied, “W ell Honey….I don’t think we should spank him”
