Gila River Casinos, the leader in high energy gaming entertainment in Arizona, has appointed Curt Warner as Director of Player Development for Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino, Lone Butte Casino and Vee Quiva Casino. In this role, Mr. Warner will work with casino hosts at all three properties to plan, coordinate and execute events targeted at increasing player development. “We are very happy to have Curt on board,” said Joel Rovics, Corporate Director of Marketing. “Curt has a proven track record in the gaming industry and I know he will be a tremendous asset to the team here at Gila River Casinos.” Curt Warner has worked as Director of Player Development for casinos in California, Indiana and Illinois. Sean “Diddy” Combs cancelled his scheduled May 10th performance of the “Diddy Dirty Money Tour” at Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino. It seems Diddy has flu like symptoms and regretfully was unable to perform his scheduled concert appearance in a statement he released on Twitter. There are no plans to reschedule the performance at this time. Now here’s the good news all guests who purchased tickets to the “Diddy Dirty Money” show will not only receive a full refund for the purchase price of their ticket – But as a bonus, Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino will provide two complimentary tickets for each purchaser to enjoy the upcoming “Sinbad Live” Concert that will take place on Sunday, May 15th in the Ovations LIVE! Showroom. To get refund and two complimentary Sinbad tickets – Just bring your “Diddy Dirty Money” tickets to the box office at Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino. You know, laughter is often called the best medicine when you’re feeling down - so maybe Sean “Diddy” Combs should catch one of the funniest comics to ever hit the stage anywhere, Sinbad on May 15.

Bluewater Fun!
Celebrating 12 years this June BlueWater Resort & Casino has been a hub of gaming, entertainment, lodging, and water sports since opening in 1999. No wonder it draws visitors from across the globe. It’s accessible to those traveling by water or highway as it sits on the shores of the Colorado River just off Highway 95 in Parker. BlueWater Resort & Casino has a variety of gaming options with the newest slot machines, blackjack, bingo and a new poker room with live games and tournaments! Through the member rewards program, VIPclub members earn free slot play, discounted food, hotel stays and more. Membership to the VIPclub is free, so become a member as soon as you arrive! Each hotel room – whether it’s a deluxe room or suite – all feature a private balcony or patio, and all provide stunning views of the Colorado River with California’s Whipple Mountains as a backdrop. Plus, AAA has awarded BlueWater Resort & Casino a three-diamond status. And if you need to keep in touch - the Business Center is right here too. With your stay, you have access to a long list of amenities; an indoor water park with two pools, waterslide, and a spa that will appeal to any age – Add to that, miniature golf, a video arcade and a movie theatre adjacent to the casino, plus top-notch entertainment in the Concert Hall or outdoors in the Amphitheatre and we have yet to mention the 164-boat slip Marina that includes electric, fresh water, and roundthe-clock security surveillance. So bring your boat or Jet Ski’s or rent them nearby for lots of refreshing great fun on the Colorado River. We hope you will agree – BlueWater Resort & Casino is the total summer getaway package.
BlueWater offers both elegant and casual dining. The BlueWater Grille opens daily at 6:30am for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with daily specials - and you can order off the menu or try the buffet. For a great experience in fine dining, make your reservation at the River Willow, BlueWater’s steakhouse, open at 5pm daily, offering steaks, seafood, nightly specials and the “best priced wine list” on the river. The Activity Island is a great place to watch the river roll by or just rest in the great Arizona sun – Because with 600 feet of beach front “playing in the Colorado River” it’s almost as much fun as playing and winning in the casino. The River’s Edge Cantina open daily from 10am-2am allows patrons to dine inside or out, enjoying the impressive view of the Colorado River. Now under new management, the all new menu offers “Ski Sticks”, Normal Nachos, Hangover Burritos, and Bucket’s of Fun in the Sun – a playful sand pail filled with Daiquiris, Mai Tai or Margaritas! Enjoy your favorite cold beverage watching your favorite sport or playing Ping Pong or Bag Toss. And here’s the great part, the River’s Edge Cantina can be accessed by boat or auto! A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER
by Linda Boyd
Knowing and C aring Those Who Know:
oker players are absolutely right when they say if you’re lucky you’ll win, but if it’s not your day a rookie could beat any top-notch player. That’s why the World Series of Poker (WSOP) is so exciting to watch. On any given day an unknown player could win the Main Event instead of one of poker’s greats. Take the most recent Main Event on November 8, 2010, where unknown 22 year old Jonathan Duhamel took home first prize of $8,944,310. Does it mean he’s better than the likes of Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, John Juanda, Gus Hansen, Dan Harrington, Men “The Master” Nguyen, Phil Hellmuth and a long list of other famous names? NOT AT ALL. However, Duhamel did both know and care about the game in addition to be sitting on top of a horse shoe at the right time. Same thing is true for video poker players, especially those that are casino regulars. Just like with the biggest poker stars, video poker players can be on either end of the bell-shaped curve in the short run. Over time, however, those that play the odds will do significantly better than those who don’t.
I often hear people say things like, “My friend strategy. That’s true for good blackjack, craps and is good in math, so he knows which cards to hold”. gin rummy players as well. There are around 2,500,000 possible combinations If you don’t care about holding cards that offer given a deck of 52 cards - more with wild cards. the best odds then you might just as well play slots. Final Thoughts: Those Who Care: I love Frank Layden’s quote because it’s so I’m referring to smart players who understand funny; however, there’s sometimes truth to humortheir odds at video poker will improve when they ous statements. The Phoenix winner purchased his ticket because it was the 30th ticket in the pack at the counter, and he considers the number 30 to be his lucky number. His winning ticket was purchased at Fry’s Fuel Center, at 43th Ave & Cactus. He scratched the ticket while on a break at work - saw it looked like a winner, and went back to the store to have it scanned. Since it was Saturday, he had to wait until the following
Monday to redeem it. The Tempe winner went to the Fry’s Marketplace on South McClintock to purchase a Scratchers ticket, but the machine was sold out of the one he wanted, so he purchased Winning in Spades instead. He scratched the ticket at the store, realized he had a winner, and went right home and signed the back of the ticket. This is the second time this player has won $50,000 on a Scratchers ticket. However, he admitted that he did breathe a sigh of relief when the Lottery validated the ticket, confirming it was indeed a winner. When asked what their plans were for their winnings, each had a different take on their priorities. Since the Phoenix winner delivers pizzas, he had purchased a brand new hybrid automobile the week before he won. This win will certainly take some of the stress off of the new car payments. The Tempe winner hasn’t decided yet, but will definitely help his parents out financially.
A PLACE OF HER OWN Vicki Stevenson of El Mirage purchased a Pick 5 (now Fantasy 5) ticket with five lines – three lines consisting of her own personally selected numbers and two lines of Quick Picks. One of the lines with her numbers matched the numbers drawn February 18, winning her the $203,000 jackpot. The winning ticket was purchased at a Shell Station in El Mirage. After making several phone calls to the Lottery hotline and a final check with a store printout of winning numbers - she finally began to understand
that she was holding a dream come true in her hand. This win is going to take a lot of the financial stress off of her shoulders. Now she can repair her truck, buy a few things she has wanted for a long time, have a financial cushion and allow her to have a place of her own. She considers this win nothing short of a miracle.

The P er fect B lind Date
ometimes, the girl you take to the prom is not as good as the perfect blind date that you end up marrying and John Velazquez knows about as much as this as anybody in America today. He lost his Kentucky Derby mount, Uncle Mo, due to illness on Friday but picked up the mount on Animal Kingdom and then guided that runner to victory in the most important race in America. The Boulevard of Broken Dreams refers to Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood and the famous picture of James Dean, Bogart, Marilyn Monroe and Elvis but the broken dreams of Robby Albarado became a nightmare after the Kentucky Derby Saturday. Albarado was thrown from his mount in the post parade for the third race at Churchill last Wednesday and suffered a broken nose and stitches over his eye and was not able to ride on either Thursday or Friday. He was intended to ride Animal Kingdom but his owners pretty much had nothing else they could do when talking about this kind of a zenith race and when Velazquez opened up, he took the mount away from Albarado. This happens every day at the track, but never so dramatically in front of a nation and a world. When Uncle Mo was declared a non-starter the day before the Kentucky Derby, the whole dynamic of the race changed a bit in that there was one less speed horse to muddle the issue. Still the pace was hot and not everybody got a decent trip but that kind of phenomenon has been going on for decades. The reality of the fact is that without Uncle Mo in the race, the rest of the runners just flat-out were not very fast.

As for Animal Kingdom is concerned, he has now run 5 races, all solid efforts and he was winning for the first time on conventional dirt last weekend when recording the 103 Derby Beyer. He had won his final prep, the Spiral, striding out well after the 9 furlongs, was coming off a career 94 Beyer and is in the clever hands of Graham Motion, who has won over a thousand races including 2 Breeders’ Cup events. On a personal note, his owner Team Valor, is headed by Barry Irwin, who I’ve known for well over 30 years and had lunch with him the very first day I worked at the Racing Form in 1977. Animal is by the turf sire Leroidesanimaux and out of Dalicia, who was sired by the 1987 Horse of the Year in Germany Acatenango. The stamina is there for Animal Kingdom to run all day as his dam won at a mile and a quarter on grass. Daughters of Acatenango have produced the likes of Eclair de Lune, reigning winner of the Beverly D. S. (G1); Preis der Diana (German Oaks) (Ger-G1) queen Mystic Lips; Italian Group 1 hero Querari; Group 2 victors Flamingo Fantasy and King Dancer, both placed at the Group 1 level; multiple Group 2-winning marathoner Askar Tau; and champion Turkish stayer Nash Bishop. When asked if the next stop is Baltimore and the Preakness, Motion shyly said he’d discuss it with Irwin but excluding any kind of a mishap, expect to see Animal Kingdom making the trek to Pimlico. Brian Mulligan was the main West Coast line-maker for 17 years for the Daily Racing Form writing under the non de plume of “SWEEP.” He continues to contribute to the Daily Racing Form writing “A Closer Look” analysis daily.
FROM A WOMAN’S POINT OF VIEW
A Taste of the Sea in Maricopa ast Friday Bernie and I decided to drive out to one by Marianne Minneci of our favorite area casinos, Harrah’s Ak-Chin in Maricopa to play a little poker. There were some live games going on, so we put our names on the list, and thought “before we sit down for some serious poker, let’s not play on an empty stomach” – so we decided to try the special Friday Night “all you can eat” seafood buffet. Now, we had eaten at the newly remodeled buffet on several occasions since it opened late last year and we were more than pleased with the quality and selection of the food offered, but we never had experienced the Friday night feast. If you haven’t checked out the all new buffet you will be pleasantly surprised. The whole room has been opened up to give you a more modern restau rant feel. The one thing it doesn’t have is the crowded feeling that you experience at other buffets. Seafood is indeed my all-time favorite type of food. I know good seafood when I taste it. I have dined at numerous establishments in the Valley since I moved here from Chicago twenty-four years ago; I can honestly say without hesitation that none of them measure up to the selection of aquatic delights I encountered at the Harrah’s buffet. At this seafood buffet you’ll enjoy an incredible variety of choices - so you will always find one of your favorites.
20 ARIZONA PLAYER May 2011
The King Crab Legs were amazing. Unlike some buffets I have eaten at where they literally cook the flavor out of the meat and cause the shell to be rubbery, the crab legs at Harrah’s are steamed to perfection and the meat is sweet and succulent. To top it off, the casino has the absolute best drawn butter for you to dip your huge pieces of crab. While struggling with my crab legs, Mike MacQuarrie, Restaurant Supervisor came over and personally gave us a lesson on how to get the maximum amount of meat from the crab legs with the least amount of effort - and I thought I was an expert before! There were so many wonderful items that it’s hard to mention them all, but here’s a small sample of my personal favorites. The salads were delicious featuring a crab meat salad, shrimp ceviche and my favorite, a citrus flavored calamari salad with a hint of ginger, absolutely to die for. On this particular night one of the featured dishes was grilled marlin on a bed of chorizo rice topped with pineapple guacamole with tortilla strips which was a delight. I also enjoyed the sweet and sour tomato glazed salmon and the fresh grilled salmon was the best I’ve had in years. I also tried the large peel and eat shrimp and jumbo fried shrimp. If you come with someone that is not a seafood lover, there are plenty of other items to please any palate. The buffet features freshly grilled steaks, prime rib, beef tenderloin you can cut with a fork and rotisserie chicken that falls off the bone, plus freshly grilled chicken teriyaki on skewers. Along with fresh vegetables from asparagus to grilled squash to tender corn on the cob. Another thing that Mike MacQuarrie pointed out was the fact they have strived to offer a large variety of healthy options for today’s healthy lifestyles. There is truly something for everyone at Harrah’s buffet. I had a few more questions, so Mike introduced us to Jeffrey People, Harrah’s Sous Chef, and he explained how they create different dishes on a weekly basis so seafood dishes will vary. You might find marlin on week and shark the next. The one thing that stays constant is that the fish is flown in fresh every week and it will always be a treat to your taste buds. When you do visit the buffet, make sure that you save some room for dessert. When you arrive
at the dessert section you feel as though you have arrived at your favorite scratch bakery. I sampled their chocolate raspberry cake and carrot cake, both were scrumptious. I finished off with a scope of one of their many gelato flavors. Bernie tried the pecan pie and the black forest cake which he truly enjoyed. I was impressed with the courtesy and professionalism of the cooks, station servers and wait staff. Everyone takes pride in their work and their knowledge of the food items offered is exceptional. Everyone has definitely done their homework. And finally, a special “Thank you” to Kenneth Juneau, Food and Beverage Operations Manager who saw us talking to Mike MacQuarrie and wanted to make sure everything was OK, we said “Everything was terrific” and he made every effort to make our visit a memorable one. Being a poker player I can say that making it to the final table is great, but getting a table at Harrah’s All You Can Eat Seafood Buffet ranks at the same level. I’m already looking forward to my next visit. Until next time, “Have a Lucky Month”. Write me at azpokerlady@cox.net

Adam is interested in Emma but Emma is too busy for a relationship. They end up in bed and decide they can have a strictly physical relationship. They believe they can pull it off but none of their friends think it’s possible. This rom-com is more from the woman’s point of view with Emma driving what happens or so she thinks. The cast is surprisingly good and the story works, it’s romantic and funny without being stupid. Newlyweds Alan and Patty were in the shower together on a Saturday morning, when the doorbell rang. They look at each other, Patty nods, puts on a robe and goes down to answer the door. She opens the door and in walks her husband’s old pal Billy. Patty tells him that Alan is in the shower and asks if he can come back later. Instead, Billy closes the door and quietly says, “Patty, I have always admired you from afar - look, I have two $100 bills in my wallet, I’ll give them to you if you’ll just open the top of your bathrobe for me.” Patty is offended, but really needs the money so she agrees, opens the top of her robe, and lets Billy have a quick peek before closing it up again. Billy gives her the $200, and she opens the door for him

to leave, he turns and says, “Look, Patty, I just have another two $100 bills, but I’ll give them to you if you just open your robe completely.” Now Patty is really mortified, but again, they are really in dire need of money, so she undoes her robe and gives Billy a quick look. Taking the other $200 from him, she tells him to please leave. She heads back upstairs, gets back in the shower with her husband, feeling really guilty. “Who was that?” the husband asks. “Oh, that was just crazy Billy,” she replies. “Billy?” Alan says in disgust. “That jerk promised to stop by yesterday to drop off the $400 bucks I lent him at last week’s poker game!”
