cover story
This is an exciting time for the Arizona Lottery and Arizona Lottery players alike because $2 Powerball launched in January with jackpots that grow bigger, faster. The new $2 Powerball offers many additional appealing features to players. The starting jackpot doubled from $20 million to $40 million and, if there’s no winner on a draw, the jackpot for the following draw increases by a minimum of $10 million. In response to lottery players’ requests for more winners and larger prizes, the enriched $2 Powerball game includes better overall odds and bigger prize amounts. The odds of winning any Powerball prize have improved from 1 in 35 to 1 in 31.8 and the odds of winning the jackpot have also changed in favor of the players. The lowest prize for matching just the red Powerball number increased from $3 to $4. The second prize for matching all five numbers, without the Powerball, increased from $200,000 to $1 million. This increased second prize will undoubtedly result in more millionaires. In fact, a Tucson resident claimed Arizona’s first $1 million second prize from the January 21 draw, which was only the second $2 Powerball draw since the game launched on January 15. Beyond bigger jackpots and better overall odds for players, the new $2 Powerball will also be valuable to the causes that benefit most from Arizona Lottery dol8 ARIZONA PLAYER February 2012
lars. The Arizona Lottery supports programs that aim to improve the quality of life for Arizona residents. Every week, the Arizona Lottery generates nearly $3 million to fund a wide variety of public projects and programs across the state in the areas of health and public welfare, economic and business development, environmental issues and education. The new $2 Powerball will also generate more commissions for Arizona Lottery retailers. Retailers throughout the state rely on Arizona Lottery ticket commissions to support their businesses and benefit the communities they serve. In fact, the Arizona Lottery has already paid out more than $19 million in commissions to retailer’s year-to-date. The $2 multi-state Powerball ticket will further differentiate it from the multi-state Mega Millions game and Arizona’s own jackpot game, The Pick, which will remain at the $1 price point. While Powerball has been improved, it’s still the same great game players have enjoyed for 20 years. This is the first Powerball price increase since the game began. Powerball draws will continue to be on Wednesdays and Saturdays with ticket sales ending at 7:59 p.m. Please visit www.ArizonaLottery. com for more information.

Mazatzal Player Wins a Million!
The final weekend of January 2012 will be one weekend that Catherine Platt of Peoria, Arizona will long remember. After spending an enjoyable night at the Cliff Castle Casino Hotel, she decided to head up to the casino for a little fun on the slots and picked one of the world’s most popular slot machines – Wheel of Fortune. What a great choice! And as they often say “Right Place – Right Time” Catherine pulled the handle and won the progressive Jackpot of $102,939.69 on the Wheel of Fortune 25-cent slot machine. Platt was both shocked and excited about her winnings and plans to pay off her car and other bills and take a vacation! Centrally located in Camp Verde, Cliff Castle Casino Hotel is proudly owned and operated by the Yavapai-Apache Nation and offers live-action poker, blackjack and more than 660 gaming devices. Guests can enjoy fine dining at Storytellers Steakhouse and family dining at The Gallery, The Gathering Restaurant & Bar, and Johnny Rockets. For hotel reservations call (928) 567-6611, or (800) 524-6343.

A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER Average Daily ome math concepts are just too much information unless you’re a very serious player. There are by recreational gamblers Linda Boyd who may not need the money but find it a challenge to squeeze every last penny out of a good play. They’ll spend hours practicing on WinPoker software if they play video poker (VP) and make sure they know both quirky hand plays as well as every penalty card situation in order to gain a one cent per hour theoretical advantage. I’m a technical player because it’s my job to write VP strategy cards and analyze the data; however it’s not practical for everybody. Most just want to use a good basic strategy for their game of choice. So now I have to wrestle with deciding what people will want to know and what is “too much” information. In the past my writing about gambling in Nevada and Midwest casinos had a lot of information about “Theo” (casino’s theoretical edge) and ADT (average daily Theo) but most Arizona casinos weren’t using this data. Times have changed. Now, even if you’re not into the math behind the games, you need to understand how ADT works in order to play smart and get the best mailers and discretionary comps available. Theo: Theo is just short for “theoretical” and refers to what the statistics indicate you will lose in the casino on each visit. Of course you can be ahead or behind the bell shaped curve in the short run but over time your results will move
12 ARIZONA PLAYER February 2012
Theo
towards the statistical expectations. Statistics are a proven and exact science as can be verified by any casino in the country. So the casino doesn’t care whether you win or lose in a session, they know if you’re a frequent player, especially if your game is slots, they will make a profit as indicated on the gaming device you’ve chosen to play. For example, if you play “Mr. Woo” and there’s a 90% ER (expected return) chip in the machine - that’s the Theo they use for your session. But, what if you move around to a variety of games or slots? Then they must make an estimate based on each session. Casino “Day”: Casinos are getting more accurate at predicting their edge over each player (assuming they use a slot card, something I recommend) as advances are made with casino technology. However, you have some wiggle room within the system by knowing the “day” used by casinos you visit. Some will run from 6AM to 6PM or from 12 Noon to Midnight or anything they choose. You should ask at the slot club to be sure since you will want to have the highest Theo possible given your level of play. Make sure you don’t play a few minutes into the next day or you’ll cut your Theo in half. Also, you may want to play longer sessions fewer days a week or play longer sessions only on days with multiple points or some other player incentive. Average Daily Theo (ADT): This is the allimportant figure for mailers, discretionary comps and offers for show tickets or other comps. This figure represents the amount of money you run through casino devices times the theoretical house
advantage. Each casino will offer a max percentage of this amount for discretionary restaurant comps. (Some casinos won’t have discretionary comps so you’ll have to ask a casino host.) Here’s an example: On average you play for four hours on each visit and run $800 per hour through machines with a 90% Theo. So the casino expects to make $320 off each of your visits. (They have a 10% advantage on $800 in total hourly wagers for $80 per hour times 4 hours= $320). Let’s say the casino’s internal comp figure is 20%. That means you’d be offered up to $64 in discretionary food comps. Keep in mind that some casinos offer a higher or lower percentage, but if you ask a host they will probably tell you their figure. Remember most people don’t know about discretionary comps (given by a casino host and do not come off your comp balance; some casinos don’t even offer comps on slot cards). Summary: In order to get the best mail offers and maximize discretionary comps you will want to have the highest ADT possible. The best way to do that is to play your normal amount of time but make sure it’s within the confines of the “day” as defined by the casino. Also, you’ll want to know how much to ask for when requesting restaurant comps so you’re not denied the comp (not a big deal if you are but some people get embarrassed) but you aren’t shy about requesting a fair amount. Linda Boyd ,a long-time table game player before turning to video poker, also writes for “Southern Gaming” and “Midwest Gaming and Travel” her book, “The Video Poker Edge”, includes free removable pay schedules and free strategy cards for the most popular games. Look for her story in the 2011and 2012 Editions of “American Casino Guide”. The 2010 Second Edition of her book is available in both paperback and kindle. TJ’s Blackjack corner
“When” To Walk Away
recently sat down to play some blackjack at one of our local casinos last week. At the by TJ Jorgensen table I selected the dealer had just finished shuffling, which is very important to me since I need to see every card from the beginning of the shoe. The first hand was dealt and I received an eleven vs the dealer up card of a 6, so I doubled down and caught a 2. The dealer then proceeded to make twenty one. My next hand was 12 against the dealers 10 – I hit and caught a ten busting. My third hand was a 10 vs a dealer 6, I doubled and caught a three, the dealer then made another 21 - The chance of a player losing three hands in a row is only 14%, so this is never a good start. My fourth hand was an 18, beaten by a dealer 20. At this point I left the table for several reasons. First of all, my running count was now negative seven, and with one deck dealt in a six deck game it gave me a true count of over negative one. You will cut your losses in half by not playing in a negative count of -1 or greater. Second, if you lose four hands in a row you will save yourself a lot of money in the long run by switching tables. When the cards are running like this it is best to leave the situation and find a better one. The other three players at my table continued playing and were digging in their pockets for more money as I excused myself. I watched for a while as these players lost at least $100 each. You can be the very best player in the world and lose in situations like this, so being able to recognize the appropriate time to
14 ARIZONA PLAYER February 2012
walk away can save you hundreds of dollars. I wandered around the casino and found another table with just one player. This time on my very first hand I caught blackjack. My second hand I had 16 vs the dealers up card 10, I hit and caught a 5 for a perfect twenty one. My third hand was a pair of aces which I split and caught a 10 on each. I won the first twelve hands in a row, making back what I lost at the other table and another $150 on top of that. My point is - that by leaving a losing situation I found a table that had a completely opposite flow of cards. I played for about an hour and left over $600 ahead. As I was leaving the casino I walked by my original table and the same three players were still digging in their pockets, who knows how much they were down at this point. It really amazes me how players will go down with a sinking ship, throwing more money at the money they have already lost. Maybe it’s ego that makes a player continue to play at a table where they are getting destroyed. A key to playing winning blackjack is to keep your emotions out of the game. You must be able to look at a situation objectively and make the appropriate decision. If it’s the first table you played at, walk away - It’s that simple. If things are going south, more than likely they will continue in that direction. One thing I have learned in all my years of playing is - blackjack is a very streaky game. I have seen both extremes, I have seen players lose twenty hands in a row and keep playing thinking that things would change....they didn’t. I have also played when the dealer could not
make a hand. In one such session – the four players at my table emptied the entire dealer chip tray of all of the reds, greens, and blacks chips in two hours – with only purples remaining. So it can go both ways. Hunches, and gut feelings have no place in the game of blackjack. Prayer does not work either You must rely on skill. Being able to recognize a losing situation quickly, will save you a lot of money in the long run, just use my four hand rule. Anytime you lose four hands in a row - switch tables. After all it’s easier to end up with a winning session if you only have to make up a small amount of money. If you started your day with a loss, don’t get caught up in the moment, and in the heat of battle lose all your money. Save your bankroll walk away and look for a better situation. Here is another tip: before you sit down to play, walk around – check out the action - Look for a table where the players appear to have a larger than normal stack of chips in front of them. If they do, chances are it’s a winning table and is worth a try. Avoid the tables where players only have one or two chips in front of them. Losing sessions are part of the game, but if you keep them to a minimum, you will have a lot more winnings at the end of the day T.J. Jorgensen has been a professional blackjack player for over twenty years. He is well known for his live tournament play. He has competed against and beaten some of the top tournament players in the world, and has won the prestigious “World Series of Blackjack” – His book “Beating the casino at their own game” is available at: www.freewebs.com/tjsblackjackcorner or by e-mail tj4justice1@msn.com

lottery news Another Arizona Lottery Millionaire!
Willis and Christine Boyd (left and center) celebrate with Arizona Lottery Executive Director Jeff Hatch-Miller
The winners of the $1 million Powerball 2nd prize in Arizona redeemed their ticket from the Jan 28 draw in Phoenix on Feb 7. Willis and Christine Boyd drove to Phoenix from Fort Mohave bringing in their winning ticket they had purchased from the Smith’s Food & Drug,
located at 4747 HWY 95, in Fort Mohave, Arizona. Since the launch of the new $2 Powerball on January 15, only two other states besides Arizona have had two second prize winners – the first Arizona winner was a Tucson resident. Willis, a retired Colorado State Trooper who is still in disbelief about his win, plans to purchase a new car with his wife, share some with their son and invest the rest of the winnings. The Smith’s Food & Drug store in Fort Mohave is directly across the street from the Safeway that sold the winning $95.3 million Powerball ticket in 2010. Fort Mohave is adjacent to Bullhead City, Arizona and across the river from Laughlin, NV. The jackpot for the new $2 Powerball has climbed to $250 million for the draw on Wednesday, Feb. 8. This is the highest Powerball jackpot since June 2010 and since $2 Powerball launched last month.
Tucson Resident - First $2 Powerball Millionaire
On January 27, a Tucson resident who wishes to remain anonymous came forward to claim the $1 million second prize Jackpot from the new $2 Powerball. The $1 million winning $2 Powerball ticket was drawn on Saturday, Jan 21, and was sold at a Fry’s Food Store in Tucson on East Grant Rd. The winning numbers are 12 - 24 - 43 - 44 – 45, with the PB 7. The winner was thrilled to learn that he was Arizona’s first million-dollar, second prize winner with the new $2 Powerball. Even though he was excited with the news, the winner said “health is more important than money.” “It was great to learn that someone stepped forward to claim the second prize $2 Powerball jackpot and become Arizona’s newest millionaire,” said Karen Bach, assistant director of budget, products and communications for the Arizona Lottery. “This big win will dramatically impact the player’s life, and 10/12/09 I can’t think a better for Poker_1/3page_vp ad.qxp 12:31ofPM Page way 1 him to start 2012.”
The new $2 Powerball game offers many appealing features to players, including better overall odds and jackpots that grow bigger, faster. The starting jackpot doubled from $20 million to $40 million and the second prize for matching all five numbers, without the Powerball, increased from $200,000 to $1 million. Arizona Lottery players must be 21 years or older to purchase or redeem tickets. Overall odds vary by game. lottery news Arizona Lottery Reports Record-Breaking Mid-Year Results The Arizona Lottery recently announced its mid-year results with sales currently pacing a record-breaking 8.8% percent over fiscal year 2011. As a result of the record year-to-date Lottery sales, the State of Arizona has received almost $65 million in net proceeds. This continues the lottery’s long history of success. Over the past three years sales are up 20% and over the last ten years sales are up over 114%. “We could not be more proud in being able to report these strong sales figures, especially during our 30th anniversary year,” said Jeff Hatch-Miller, executive director of the Arizona Lottery. The Lottery dollars were allocated to fund a wide variety of public projects and programs throughout Arizona that fall under four important pillars: education, health & public welfare, economic & business development and the environment. In addition to the Arizona Lottery’s sizable contribution to the State this year, more than $183 million has been paid out to players in the form of prizes. Lottery retailers large and small throughout the state also have benefitted from the record Lottery sales, earning more than $19 million in commissions year-to-date, which many of them rely upon to support their businesses.

Karen K. Bach, Assistant Director of Budget, Products & Communications, told us scratchers are the most popular game generating 64.1% of sales with Powerball a distant second with 16.1%. In its short time Mega Millions has surpassed The Pick, 6.5% to 5.6%. The Lottery monitors its customer and has determined 60% of the state’s adult population have played at least one lottery game in the past year. Ms. Bach also told us they listen and respond to their players. The recent changes to the Powerball are in direct response to the player’s desire for larger jackpots and more winners. The new Powerball starting jackpot has doubled to $40 million while Mega Millions starts at $12 million and The Pick starts at $1 million. Second place prizes in the Powerball have increased to $1 million. Last year there were 13 second place winners in Arizona. “We are confident that our strong sales trend will continue through the end of the year as we work aggressively toward meeting 2012 goals,” said Hatch-Miller. “Our focus is on introducing new, innovative products, building partnerships and using technology that attracts players and delivers sound results for Arizona Lottery beneficiaries
throughout the state. We have built a strategic foundation through research and best practices to exceed industry standards and expect to report record-breaking end-of-year results as well.”
A Change of Pace Charles Mathis of Phoenix purchases Scratchers about once a week and decided it was time to try a different Scratchers ticket. He purchased one of the Cool 5’s and hit the top prize of $50,000. Since he’d scratched the ticket while he was at his favorite store, he had the clerk scan it. Mathis then took the paperwork home to complete. The ticket was purchased from the Circle K located at 1250 N. Arizona Blvd., Coolidge. Charles went home and told his wife the good news. Of course, like most wives whose husbands tell them, “I just won $50,000” she didn’t believe him. Once she checked the ticket and saw that it was real, she was just as excited as he was. Charles, who still works in the construction field, has no plans to retire at this point. However, he does plan to get some chrome wheels for his truck – something he’s wanted for a long time. He plans to share the rest of his winnings with his family.

DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR Safe House – Matt is a frustrated CIA agent babysitting an empty safe house in Cape Town when the most wanted man on four continents is brought in by a team for questioning. Tobin Frost is a former top agent who went rogue ten years ago and has by become legendary since then. The house is breach David Ramsey by heavily armed gunmen and Matt ends up running with Frost. As the agent in charge of the house Matt is responsible for Frost’s safety and getting him back into custody. The bad guys are always one step ahead of them as they crisscross South Africa in series of chases and shoot-outs. “Safe House” is fast moving with lots of action and great cast.
David’s Video Details Drive
Driver (Ryan Gosling) is a Los Angeles wheelman for hire, by day he does stunt driving for the movies but at night he is an amazing getaway driver with his own set of rules. Things go bad when he tries to help a woman and he has to make it right. The direction is mesmerizing with a slow thoughtful mood punctuated by shocking graphic violence that perfectly reflects Driver’s personality. The cast is outstanding and while not for everyone “Driver” is a heck of a film.
Take Shelter
This Means War – CIA agents Foster and Tuck’s are close friends as close as brothers. Their latest mission is to bring in two brothers but it ends with one brother dead and the other escaping while vowing vengeance. Back home in L. A. they both talk about a woman they met. When they realize they are both talking about the same Lauren they agree to compete without letting her know. Meanwhile, the escaped brother is on his way to L. A. to kill them. Using the mission as an excuse they both use agency resources to spy on and sabotage each other’s dates with Lauren. Just when things get serious it gets really serious. “This Means War” is a rare combination of action film and romantic comedy that works.
Curtis has a good life with a wife, a child and a good job but lately he has been having nightmares about a huge storm approaching. The dreams get increasing worse and he gets more and more disturbed by them. He doesn’t know if they are prophetic dreams or he is becoming a paranoid schizophrenic like his mother. Eventually his obsession takes over his life. “Take Shelter” is a study of mental illness or is it? The acting is great.
Tower Heist
After a Wall Street investment guru steals the lifesavings of his employees Josh teams with some of them, a former tenant and a petty crook to steal it back. Now all they have to do is get past the best security in the city, find and break into a hidden safe and get away with the money. “Tower Heist” is a surprisingly good caper flick with just enough comedy. “Tower Heist” never goes over the top instead it keeps the action lively with genuinely funny moments. THE MOVING WALLS
Jacob, a teenage Amish boy and his father were in a mall for the very first time and were amazed by almost everything they saw, but especially by two shiny, silver walls that moved apart and then slide back together again. The boy asked, “What is this Father?” The father (never having seen an elevator) responded, “Son, I have never seen anything like this in my life, I have no idea.”

While the boy and his father were watching with amazement, a seriously overweight woman with a cane moved up to the moving walls and pressed a button. The walls opened, the woman hobbled into the small room. The walls closed and the boy and his father watched the small numbers above the walls light up sequentially. They continued to watch until the numbers began to light in the reverse order. Finally the walls opened up again and a gorgeous young blond stepped out. The father, not taking his eyes off the young woman leaned over and whispered to his son.... “Jacob, Go get your Mother”
