Casino Del Sol Resort, Spa and Conference Center

Opens on the Luckiest Day on Earth: 11-11-11 Travelers already flock to Arizona for the beautiful weather and mountain views. Casino Del Sol Resort, Spa and Conference Center provides those looking to escape and unwind a complete entertainment destination that is unmatched by anything else in the Southwest. Casino Del Sol Resort in Tucson, Arizona opens its doors on the luckiest day on earth: 11-11-11. The opening is a part of a growing hospitality trend in entertainment resort destinations. “Long gone are the days that resorts can rely on just a pool and restaurant to attract travelers—they are now expected to be a one-stop entertainment destination for their guests, and that is exactly what Casino Del Sol Resort has set out to be,” said Wendell Long, CEO of Sol Casinos. Nothing short of entertaining, the 215-room resort boasts the Anselmo Valencia Tori Amphitheater (AVA), a 5,000-seat open-air concert venue that has featured world-class artists including Santana, Rhianna, Snoop Dog, Train and on November 12, country music legend Tim McGraw. In addition, that day will mark the first time Tim McGraw has visited Tucson this century, making it a must see event for any country fan in Southern Arizona. As the newest, most exciting resort destination to hit southern Arizona, the Certified Green Casino Del Sol promises decadence. An opulent retreat in the desert, the Tuscaninspired resort beckons guests with illuminated copper domes, grand archways and columns, bubbling fountains, and

8 ARIZONA PLAYER November 2011

flourishing greens and flowers. Upon entering the grand entry, guests are greeted by creamy Italian marble, rich mahogany woods, plush furniture and fresh floral bouquets. A 10-foot crystal chandelier that features rustic, wrought iron details adorns the vaulted ceiling. The resort features a master-planned pool and lawn complete with VIP cabanas offering shade and exclusivity, while several fire pits throughout the area offers vignettes for romantic conversations under the stars. Fountains and light shows synchronized to music will happen throughout the night and day. The exclusive and intimate Hiapsi Spa & Fitness center offers everything from vigorous cardio workouts to special Pascua Yaqui herbal wraps to manicures and pedicures. But the center transcends beyond the treatments offered. Hiapsi is the Pascua Yaqui word for “heart and soul,” and it is believed that true healing comes with balancing physical health, emotional wellbeing, and spiritual renewal.

There are ten bars and restaurants offering various options from steak to tacos, to sushi, as well as frozen yogurt and libations, plus two Starbucks locations – the only two Starbucks to be found in an Arizona casino and only the fifth and sixth Starbucks on an Indian gaming property in the United States.

gaming news Talking Stick Florist named “Designer of the Year” The Arizona State Florists’ Association (ASFA) says that Talking Stick Resort has a florist who does her “talking” with flowers. What’s more they say her work with flowers speaks volumes - And the resort’s resident florist, Christine Price, has the ASFA’s People’s Choice Award as Designer of the Year to prove it. “It’s an honor to win this award,” said Christine Price, florist for Talking Stick Resort. “I recently acquired my master certification in floral design, and spend a lot of hours furthering my education in floral art. So it’s amazing to me when that work pays off and is celebrated.” Price received the honor following ASFA’s state-wide competition that was judged by a panel of certified florists from throughout the county. The ASFA, based in Tucson was established to strengthen the floral community and to promote the floral industry to the general public. And this isn’t the first time that Price has been recognized for her skills with flowers. In 2007, she won a competition at the Arizona State Fair, and in both 2008 and 2009, she was given the People’s Choice Award by the Phoenix Art Museum. When not being honored by her colleagues and peers, Price utilizes her talents for beautiful displays at Talking Stick Resort. There, she designs the

10 ARIZONA PLAYER November 2011

floral displays for the resort’s restaurants, front desk and concierge areas, the cultural center and for guests’ special events and banquets. Price has been with the resort since its opening in 2010 and in that short time has found much love and joy in her work. “We see the beauty of Christine’s artistry with flowers every day. Her work is truly an art form, a real bonus for us and especially for our guests. We are not surprised at all to see her win such a coveted state honor and we heartily congratulate her for it,” said Steve Gerken, senior director of hospitality for Talking Stick Resort Of her work on the property, Price says, “arranging flowers for Talking Stick Resort is a passion for me. The hotel has beautiful lines, warm colors and a great deal of texture. The level of detail in the resort is a key element in my design as my philosophy is to look for the natural beauty in those surroundings and that inspires me to recreate a story with flowers. Behind all my arrangements there is a story I am inspired to tell.” Talking Stick Resort is located at the 101 and Indian Bend in Scottsdale. The 15-story luxury resort features 497 deluxe rooms and 15 luxury suites, a 240,000 sq. ft. casino, 650-seat showroom, six entertainment lounges and five restaurants/eateries.

A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER

Looking

riginally the expression “Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth” was “Don’t look a given by horse in the mouth”, but Linda Boyd circa 1663 the substitution of “gift” for “given” was made to shorten the iambic tetrameter for a poem and the more lyrical version stuck. The change is not too important, except for explaining the meaning. You see the gums of a horse recede as they age; therefore, inspecting the teeth of a horse given as a gift would mean the recipient is trying to access the value of the present--bad manners indeed. I certainly don’t want to appear unappreciative of a gift by examining it too closely in order to determine its value. But what if it’s from a casino and based solely on my play? In my opinion, then it is okay to say no thanks without worrying about hurting someone’s feelings. I thought you’d never ask: Nobody asked me what constitutes a good gift from a casino. Still, with it being so close to Christmas I thought I’d add my two cents worth so they could spend their Holiday budget on something players want. Non-Logoed Items: It wouldn’t kill them to give something that doesn’t have the casino’s name on it. First of all there are many places where you can’t wear the “Boomtown” jacket (actually my denim jacket from this long-gone casino is cherished) and forget donating it to a school or church. Marketers may think they’re getting lots of free advertising when they place their name front and center on all presents, but they’d be wrong. Can you

14 ARIZONA PLAYER November 2011

a

Given Horse

even imagine recycling a gift decorated with a casino’s name much less wearing it to church or work? Inexpensive but desirable: Plants, flowers, or even fragrant soaps in a pretty dish will be welcomed by the ladies. They must, however, stay away from artificial varieties; nothing says tacky like plastic or silk flowers. For men, similarly priced toiletries or restaurant comps. Surprise me: Gamblers love taking a chance so drawing an envelop to determine your prize is a good idea. Casinos must be careful to have several levels of gifts available so there’s some adrenaline rush. I would say this is one time it’s better to avoid the virtual wheel at a kiosk, especially if you require patrons to wait in line anyway to receive the gift. Gift certificates: Not only are these popular for most on your personal list, but they’re also excellent for casinos. Walmart, Target, gas stations, malls, restaurants and others are good choices; it helps local businesses and some will offer discounts to casinos for placing a large order. Cash/Free Play: This, of course, is my favorite and should be based on your level of play. It’s only bad taste to give cash when the amount is $5 or less. Presentation: If they’re going to call it a gift, then make sure it’s gaily wrapped. Asians tend to give lovely presents and the packaging is so nice that it’s part of the gift. A beautiful scarf, for example, can be used to house the present. Differentiated gifts: One of the most important things for casino brass to remember is that just like your number of contest entries, bounceback cash (mailed coupons for money that must be redeemed in person) and slot club points, gifting should not be a democratic process.

in the

Mouth

The amount you receive in these instances is based solely on your ADT (average daily theoretical edge for the house) or, better yet, your aggregate (total) play. The same rules should apply to both birthday and Christmas gifts. If the casino decides to give everybody the same thing, then you can be sure it will be a cheap and unwelcome present. It’s better to give nothing at all then to insult the recipient with a Cracker Jack prize. Final Thoughts: Maybe it appears ungrateful to look a given horse in the mouth but when it’s a casino that’s bestowing the presents strings will be attached. A business that hands out cash based on your level of play shouldn’t feel slighted if you check out the amount of gum showing on the horse they render. Most gamblers don’t expect the Kentucky Derby winner, but they may choose to decline an old gray mule on its last leg. Frankly, they should be embarrassed to imply a gold trophy on mailers but instead handing you a plastic cup. Linda Boyd ,a long-time table game player before turning to video poker, also writes for “Southern Gaming” and “Midwest Gaming and Travel” her book, “The Video Poker Edge”, includes free removable pay schedules and her free strategy cards for the most popular games. Arizona Lottery excitement at the State Fair The Arizona Lottery Lounge was back the Arizona State Fair this year, rolling out its red carpet, music, disco ball and money blower machine for players and fair attendees. Located at the entrance to the Arizona Lottery Backyard, the Arizona Lottery Lounge presented a nightclub-like atmosphere for ages 21 and older. Complete with a disco ball and prize wheel, the Arizona Lottery Lounge offers guests VIP access to some of the Arizona Lottery’s most popular games and provides opportunities for players to win a variety of prizes. Guests who purchased $5 worth of Arizona Lottery tickets received one spin at the prize wheel. A $20 purchase awarded players with a prize wheel spin and an Arizona Lottery T-shirt. Then on November 1, the seasonal game Millionaire Raffle took center stage. Guests who purchased a $20 Millionaire Raffle ticket received a free Powerball ticket, T-shirt and a spin at the prize wheel. “The Arizona Lottery Lounge was such a hit at the Arizona State Fair last year, that

we decided to bring it back again,” says Kim McGlothlen, marketing and advertising director for the Arizona Lottery. “There are, however, a few fun new additions like the money blower machine, which we expect players to love.” Arizona Lottery players who stepped into the money blower machine had a chance to win preferred seating tickets to the Old School Jam concert featuring Stevie B., Lisa Lisa, Debbie Deb and Young MC. More than a million people visit the State Fair each year. The fair was open Wed thru Sun October 14 - November 6. The Arizona Lottery operates entirely from the revenue it generates through the sale of its products; it receives no General Fund dollars from the State. Proceeds from sales of Lottery tickets - nearly $3 million per week - fund a variety of state programs. Since July 1981, the Arizona Lottery has paid out more than $4.6 billion in prizes to players, nearly $2.7 billion in net profit to the state and more than $550 million in commissions to retailers.

Arizona Lottery Millionaire Raffle is Back! The annual Arizona Lottery Millionaire Raffle launched on Nov. 1, offering 1,147 cash prizes, including a $1 million top prize. HORSIN’ AROUND

2011 BREEDERS CUP FREAK Y FRIDAY / SENSATIONAL SATURDAY

he 48 hours of this year’s Breeders’ Cup by Brian had a little something Mulligan for everybody - from chalk to prices to an ex-boyfriend exacting revenge. For a Breeders’ Cup Day at Churchill Downs Friday that saw 3 favorites, a 6-1 and a pair of bombs, the opulent near $450,000 Pick Six payoff looks like a gift at first asking, but let’s see how the winners were successful. Even though Bob Baffert’s trainee Secret Circle resembled a drunken sailor down the stretch wobbling to get to the wire but he made it three for three when barely holding in the Juvenile Sprint. This was a case of just peaking at the right time but don’t expect this guy to be around during the Triple Crown run next year. Stopshoppingmaria, named for owner Mike Repole’s wife who likes to shop till she drops, looked home free at the top of the lane of the Juvenile Fillies Turf but she was inhaled late by Stephanie’s Kitten, who proved her win in the Grade 1 Alcibiades at 9-1 was no fluke. Kitten paid $14 and change and she recorded an 87 Beyer. Things were about to go awry in the Filly and Mare Sprint when favorite Turbulent Descent had a nightmarish trip to run out of the money which set up a shocker by Musical Romance, who paid $42.40 to key a superfecta that paid over $30,000.

22 ARIZONA PLAYER November 2011

Order was quickly restored when My Miss Aurelia made it a perfect 4 for 4 winning the Juveniles Fillies with the lightest BC Beyer of the day of 86. She got a perfect 2-home trip. The action started in the Filly and Mare turf in the post parade as Announce acted up on the track and had to be scratched. It changed the complexion of the race and after the chalk Stacelita lacked room; the race was anybody’s to take. The miss that took advantage with a 99 Beyer was Woodbine invader Perfect Shirl who stalked 3 wide to finally pull away at 27-1. The pinnacle of the Friday card was the Ladies Classic as things got back to normal. Royal Delta had a legit excuse in her prior race before the Classic when catching the mud but she confirmed the Grade 1 class that she showed winning the Alabama this spring. The chaos continued on Saturday as the winner of the Marathon, Afleet Again who had lost his first 8 races this year - nearly blew up the tote board when returning $85.20. It may be his one career highlight. The Europeans dominated the Juvenile Turf controlling the trifecta as Wrote penned the perfect outcome at a fat 11-1 for trainer Aidan O’Brien. Amazombie, trained by my friend Bill Spawr, won a tight one in the Sprint to return nearly $18 and solidify the career of the 72-year-old conditioner. The winner of the Turf Sprint, Regally Ready, proved a favorite could win but players could still

get paid as the superfecta players were 33-1,10-1 and 18-1 respectively to return a ‘super’ of over 21 grand despite the popular winner. One of the more impressive winners of the day was Caleb’s Posse, who came from second to last to win going away at a fat 6-1. Father’s Day usually comes in July but it was there for all to see in November as Aidan’s O’Brien gave his son a leg up on St Nicholas Abby and watched with awe with his family as the kid made the right move at the right time to win impressively. The possible Kentucky Derby leader showed up in the Juvenile as Union Rags was hung wide every step of the way and still just missed, but the winner, Hansen has to be given his props. In three career races, he has never been headed. Champion Goldikova ended her career on a losing note and was whipped by 64-1 shocker Court Vision, who had not been in the money in 4 starts this year. In the granddaddy of them all, the Classic, it was all about the boulevard of broken dreams as Game On Dude under Chantal Sutherland, who was trying to be the first woman to win the Classic, was nailed on the wire by Drosselmeyer, under Mike Smith, who used to be Sutherland’s boyfriend. For a Cup that lacked imagination going in, the drama came in droves for all racing fans to see. Brian Mulligan was the main West Coast line-maker for 17 years for the Daily Racing Form writing under the non de plume of “SWEEP.” He continues to contribute to the Daily Racing Form writing “A Closer Look” analysis daily.

raving perspectives

I’m Mazatzal – and I’m Not Taking it Anymore! t’s one of the most interesting by stories I’ve heard Dennis Conrad about. It fills me with great pride. And it proves that you can find value in almost anything if you put your mind to it. This saga starts a couple of years ago. After completing my second book, Conrad on Casino Marketing, I wanted the whole gaming world to read it. OK, truth be told, I was hoping to sell a few thousand copies of the book as well. So I did what I imagine most consultants/authors do, I gave away a few hundred copies of Conrad on Casino Marketing to friends and relatives - To influential gaming industry professionals and for the purposes of this story, to a random group of casino general managers in the Western United States. Enter Farrell Hoosava of Mazatzal (pronounced almost identical to “Mad as Hell”) Casino in Payson, Arizona. Unbeknownst to me, Farrell read my book, liked it and immediately thought that the concepts I espoused in Conrad on Casino Marketing would make a good basis for a training program for Mazatzal Casino. Unbeknownst to me, Farrell read my book, liked it and immediately thought that the concepts I espoused in Conrad on Casino Marketing would make a good basis for a training program for Mazatzal Casino. Fast forward nearly two years. Through Farrell’s

leadership and the hard work of Patricia Wisner, Mazatzal’s Training and Development Specialist - Mazatzal now has a fully formed “Master Plan for Fun,” designed to improve customer service and positively affect the Mazatzal culture. “Master Plan for Fun” is now into its second go around at Mazatzal. It has a concise project definition and clear objectives. It has a curriculum containing eight work-shops, a variety of “hold feet to the fire” assignments, Directors’ Retreats designed to chart progress, discuss program innovations and maintain accountability, and a Celebration Luncheon - But above all, “Master Plan for Fun” has had results. Or as GM Farrell Hoosava told me in a recent email, “When you sent me your book a couple of years ago, I knew that a course built around the insights in your book had the potential to change the culture here. I am sending you the entire curriculum, which we have adapted to our supervisors. It was very gratifying to hear from one of them after the first workshop that she had noticed a change in the culture following the first run through with the managers.” Thank you, Farrell, thank you, Patty, and thanks to your entire team. I’m proud as hell that Mazatzal took my book, took my thoughts, and took the real initiative to make a difference for your managers, your team members and your guests.

And to everyone else, when you read a thought provoking book, or attend an interesting conference, or simply have a great idea that can matter, just “take it and run with it.” That’s a master plan for success that would do all consultants/authors proud. DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR J. Edgar –

John Hoover or Edgar as he preferred to be called lived with his mother until she died, dated starlets and had a close life-long relationship with his deputy, Clyde Tolson (Armie Hammer). He used his power to transformer the by Bureau the leading crime fighting David Ramsey organization it is today. When he started they did not have the buy to arrest or carry guns. He established a centralized fingerprint depository and set up forensic labs to use science to find criminals. He made as many enemies as friends but they could not get rid of him because he had something one everyone. The story of a man’s rise through the ranks to become the most powerful man in the country as the Director of the F. B. !. should be riveting but it’s not. Leonardo DiCaprio gives an award worthy performance as the legendary lawman but the film is boring. There is little action and no suspense nor are there any revelations. “J. Edgar” is one of the most disappointing films of the year.

Tower Heist – Wall Street investment guru Arthur Shaw (Alan Alda), lives in the penthouse of one of the most luxurious and well-secured building in New York City, The Tower. Josh (Ben Stiller) has managed The Tower for more than ten years. He knows his residents and what they want. When Arthur is arrested by the F. B. I. for securities fraud it takes everyone by surprise. The word is that he has stolen over two billion dollars from his investors including The Towers staff’s retirement fund. Facing with losing their life savings Josh decides to get it back. He learns that the authorities suspect Shaw has stashed at least twenty million dollars somewhere and he remembers a safe being installed in the penthouse a couple years ago. Figuring the money is in the safe Josh teams up with some other employees, a former tenant (Matthew Broderick) and a petty crook named Slide (Eddie Murphy). Now all they have to do is get past the best security in the city, find and break into the safe and get away with the money. “Tower Heist” is a surprisingly good caper flick with just enough comedy. It never goes over the top instead it keeps the action lively with genuinely funny moments. 28 ARIZONA PLAYER November 2011

David’s Video Details Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2

Harry, Hermione and Ron are in hiding while Lord Voldemort’s Deatheaters have taken over the Ministry of Magic and Hogwarts. Snape is the new headmaster and has turned the school into a strict training ground for new Deatheaters. Harry and his long-time friends know the only way to stop Voldemort is to destroy all the Horcruxes, but they must find the rest of them first. They learn that one of them is hidden at Hogwarts and break in to find it. Once inside the castle they are reunited with their followers starting a revolution in the school. It turns into an all out battle between Voldemort’s followers and Harry’s supporters. It is fast moving and spectacular. Everyone is back and it’s good to see them no matter how briefly. Like the other films it follows the book. Fans of the series could not have asked for a better ending.

Crazy Stupid Love

Cal (Steve Carell) and Emily (Julianne Moore) have the perfect life together living the American dream... until Emily asks for a divorce. Now Cal, who has only been with one woman in his life, has to navigate the single scene. Night after night he makes a fool of himself in the same bar until Jacob (Ryan Gosling) can’t take it any longer and offers to help him. He takes Cal shopping to update his wardrobe and then give him a quick education in picking up women. Jacob is a master at picking up girls until he meets Hannah (Emma Stone) who is impervious to his charm. Meanwhile, Cal & Emily’s thirteen-yearold son, Robbie (Jonah Bobo) is in love with the seventeen-year-old babysitter who has a crush on Cal. Everything comes together in a funny but believable way. “Crazy Stupid” Love is a smart funny romantic comedy with great characters and a perfect cast.

Super 8

Joe and his friends sneak out and meet at the local train depot to film a scene for the monster movie they are making. As they are filming a pivotal scene they are enthralled by the newest member of their cast, Alice (Elle Fanning), when a train approaches the station. Using the train as a backdrop they continue to film until suddenly the train is derailed throwing train cars everywhere. They manage to get out just before the military arrives on scene. The next day the train wreck is big news, it turns out it was an Air Force train carrying important cargo. Something is missing from the train. When Alice goes missing Joe and his pals go looking for her. This is a unique film that combines a sweet coming of age story with a thriller monster story and does it brilliantly. “Super 8” is a truly great movie that is an instant classic on the level of “The Goonies” and “E. T.” David is the President and co-founder of the Phoenix Film Critics Society and a member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (The Critics Choice Awards). Watch for him on KPHO CBS 5 Morning News every Friday and on KNXV ABC 15's "Sonoran Living Live" every other Friday at 9 AM. Read more of his DVD reviews at WildAboutMovies.com. “DEAR ABBY”

that he had recently retired from the pro tour and that he literally ate, drank and did nothing but dream about golf, twenty-four hours a day. And it was that obsession that had cost him many a relationship with women throughout his life. “Well” she said, “before you get too serious with me, I must be honest too….you see……..I’m a hooker” The golf pro nodded his head up and down, raised his eyebrows and replied “Well….That’s because you’re probably breaking your wrists when you hit the ball”
