The Apache Gold Casino Resort is a fabulous full service resort located about 60 miles east of Apache Junction that offers a great getaway opportunity for those tired of the daily rush of city life. This energetic casino has 650 of the most popular slot machines including Wizard of Oz, Ghost Busters and the very popular Lil Red. Just added to the floor is Big Buck Hunter where players can actually shoot at the prize elk for big prizes and the first in Arizona, Paradise Fishing where players can reel in the big catch by using the joy stick attached to the slot machine. Apache Gold has spent a ton of time and money this year making the gaming floor as fun and exciting as any of the major metropolitan casinos and they are dedicated to having all of the best games for their CASINO guests and have concentrated on the request of their players to include more penny machines. With that in mind Apache Gold Casino easily has more 1 cent machines now per capita than any casino in the metropolitan area.

A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER

Believe It Or Not

very so often a new stream of rumors circulate among video poker players. Some are true by while others are out in Linda Boyd left field. It’s important to know whether or not to believe these stories because it will impact both how you play as well as whether or not you want to place a bet. So here is some of the most recent scuttlebutt along with whether it’s true or not. House Control: Frequently players say the casino fixes the video poker machines so that they play less during busy times or to pay for a new casino. This accusation is false and if you believe it you are in effect accusing the house of cheating. Why would you even want to gamble at a place you think is dishonest? The casino can and does downgrade machines from time-to-time and that does increase the house odds. Be aware that this is done by changing the pay schedule so the return for a given hand, say a full-house, pays less than before. An example is if the casino changes a 9/6 Jacks or Better (9/6 JOB) to an 8/5JOB game. The full house will return 8 for each coin bet on a full house and 5 for each coin bet on a flush instead of 9 for the full house and 6 for the flush. This change, known as a downgrade, will cost you approximately 2.2% in theoretical return (ER). The bottom line is that the casino could not control the virtual cards dealt or drawn even if they wanted to, but they have no need to do so.

14 ARIZONA PLAYER October 2012

If they want to increase the houses hold they can do so legally by downgrading the pay schedule. It’s your job as a smart player to notice when this occurs by checking out the pay table before you deposit money into a device. Video Lottery Terminals (VLTs): Word is out that VLTs in some states do not have random number generators and, therefore, skill is not a factor. Definitely believe this, because it is true. Recently I was interviewed by New York Times reporter Eric Newcomer regarding the “randomness” of New York’s video poker devices. Unfortunately for those playing in New York, their video poker machines are VLTs and do not have a random number generator (RNG). So you are no better off than if you chose to play a slot machine instead of a video poker device in NY. To further complicate matters some jurisdictions have VLTs that are required to have RNGs while others don’t. That means that players have to be diligent to determine whether they are playing a video poker machine with a RNG like those required in both Arizona and Nevada or a slot machine in disguise. I have a large section in my book, “The Video Poker Edge”, explaining other ways to tell the difference. I will emphasize that Arizona Players are in luck because VLTs are illegal in Arizona and the pay schedule along with your skills are the sole determiners of your VP theoretical return. Promos Rigged: If you’re a frequent player in a local casino you may have noticed the same people win a disproportionate amount of the time. So does this mean the promotional drawings are somehow

rigged? Don’t believe it since it’s not true. You are probably correct about multiple winners and the fact that it’s not solely related to a lucky charm. That’s because nowadays contest entries are usually in the form of virtual tickets and the number of chances you have is based solely on your coin-in or total amount of money you played. For example, a casino may give you one ticket for every $10 wagered in any house game. This system is fair since the people who have the best promo equity are also the ones who spend the most. You can be a cleaver video poker player and increase the number of entries you have by choosing a less-volatile rather than a more volatile game. For example, if you choose Jacks or Better (JOB) over Double Double Bonus (DDB) you’ll increase the odds of playing longer on the same amount of bankroll. This means you’ll run more money through the devices and therefore increase your number of contest entries for a drawing. Final Thoughts: The rules and games are everchanging so you’ll want to take the time to investigate the latest chatter among video poker players. Sometimes preposterous-sounding statements are actually true, like the VLTs masquerading as “regular” video poker devices in New York. Still, it’s best to investigate before passing the information on to others. Linda Boyd - a long-time table game player before turning to video poker, also writes for “Southern Gaming” and “Midwest Gaming and Travel” her book, “The Video Poker Edge”, includes free removable pay schedules and free strategy cards for the most popular games. Look for her story in the current editions of “American Casino Guide” (ACG) and her You Tube videos, also with ACG. The 2010 Second Edition of her book is available in both paperback and kindle. TJ’s Blackjack corner

Blackjack Weaknesses f you can eliminate the weakness in by TJ Jorgensen your Blackjack game it stands to reason that your game will be that much stronger. Knowing the weakest part of your game and taking steps to improve it is just as important as learning basic strategy. However most people have a tough time analyzing themselves and would rather avoid the real truth. A lot of players mistake their imagination for reality when it comes to gambling. The first step is to find out how good your game really is. You can go to a website www.blackjackinfo.com and play their blackjack strategy trainer for free. It allows you to pick the set of rules that you want to play, number of decks, then it will tell you if you are making the correct play and if not what the correct play is. Play 100 hands and see how many mistakes that you make. When you can play without any errors, you will be one step closer to a winning game. The second step is to keep a log of when you play and your wins and losses. This will tell you exactly where you are profit/loss wise, not where you think you are. I personally keep a log of when I played, where I played, how long I played and how much I won or lost. I do this because I know what my long term expected outcome should be. If I am not getting the results I expect, then I look at my game and see if there is anything that I am failing to do.

Card Counting

Psychological Factors

Card counting is the way pro blackjack players gain an advantage over the casino to make money over the long run. The advantage over the casino is very small for card counters, around 1.5% so there is no room for mistakes. You must play perfectly in order to win in the long run. Each mistake costs you money and can be the difference between winning and losing. If you are trying to master card counting, you need to be able to keep track of the cards perfectly. Any mistakes here can have you betting more money when you shouldn’t, and playing the hands incorrectly. There are so many distractions in a casino environment that most people quickly lose track of the true count. Mastering card counting can be done but it will not happen overnight. Don’t even try it at the casino until you have mastered it completely.

You can have total knowledge and command of your blackjack skills, but if you don’t make the correct play at the right time they really don’t do you any good. Players that I have trained that are excellent in the classroom fail to play correctly in the casino. This usually happens after losing two large bets in a row they fail to make the proper bet size. You have to always make the right play to have a long term advantage and there is no margin for error. Additionally if you like to drink when you play you are destined to fail. You have to ask yourself if you are serious about winning or not.

Money management

This is a part of blackjack where most players fail. You need to set win loss limits before you ever set foot in the casino. Stick to them even if you go on tilt. If you set a loss limit of $100, when you reach that point simply walk away. The same goes if you reach your win goal, don’t fall into the gamblers belief that you are on a hot streak and lose everything that you just won. Discipline yourself to follow through with set limits. When you can do this your game will become that much stronger.

Blackjack Stamina

You can only play at a peak level in blackjack for so long before you start to make mistakes. Know how long you can play and then discipline yourself to take a break. It doesn’t mean you have to quit for the day but before you resume play make sure you are mentally ready. By assessing your play and being honest with yourself it will make your game that much stronger. Hopefully this will get you on track to playing a winning game of blackjack. T.J. HORSIN’ AROUND

B ack To The B r eeders ’ C up F utur e

n this great sport of horse racing, some times astute players have to look back to history to get a clue on the future so let’s revisit the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita in 2009 and try to project the winners of the 2-day event weeks ahead of the action. Nobody said it was an easy game! Racing’s great extravaganza will be held in Arcadia this year on Friday & Saturday, November 2 and 3. What started out in 1984 as 7 great showcased races in the Breeders’ Cup has now more than doubled with 15 events this year but since the last time the Cup was at Santa Anita they had a synthetic surface, fans may be able to learn something about what happened that year in the grass events. In 2009, there were 14 races on the BC card and 6 were run on the grass. In the BC Mile in 2011 Goldikova was attempting to win this fixture for the fourth year in a row but she relinquished the lead that she had at the top of the lane to be beaten a length when third to Court Vision, who under the cagey teaching of Dale Romans, came flying from 2nd to last to win at 64-1. In Goldikova’s 2009 Mile score the superstar sat 10th early, was still fifth with a furlong to go but quickened rapidly to post a 109 winning Beyer. In the Turf Sprint California Flag waved goodbye to his rival going wire-to-wire on the tricky about 6 and a half-furlong hillside course to cash by nearly 2 lengths with a 105 Beyer. He was coming into the

20 ARIZONA PLAYER October 2012

event off a win in the Grade 3 Morvich on the same course which is a clue for all online sports players to grasp, success over this course sprinting can be tantamount no matter what the current form suggests. To take things to the other end of the spectrum, check out the winner of the 2009 Turf, at a mile and a half. The hero, Conduit, made it two in a row in the Turf as he was coming off a defeat at 14-1 in the Arc at Longchamp but rallied from dead last and 16 back to win by a half length with a 106 Beyer. The point here is that all of the foreigners must be given the double take in all of the grass events. Midday was trained by the great Henry Cecil and she was fresh from a third in a Group 1 in France but dazzled the Arcadia crowd by sitting mid-pack early, closing steadily, then pulled away late to win the mile and a quarter fray by a length with a 102 Beyer. In was a homecoming of sorts for the 2009 winner of the Juvenile Turf as Pounced saved the day for John Gosden, who for years plied his trade quite successfully at Santa Anita before going back to England. Pounced was troubled in her debut, graduated at 7 furlongs on turf, was a solid second in her prior race before heading to America where she sat a close fifth early under Frankie Dettori, who unleashed the miss in time to win by three quarters of a length with a 85 Beyer. Again, the foreign influence is there for all to see. Tapitsfly got one for the Americans in the Juvenile Fillies Turf when she was coming off

a second in a three-horse field in a $114,000 Belmont stakes but got an ideal 2-hole trip to prevail by a half length with a 84 Beyer. What online sports enthusiasts can take from these results is that there are more ways than one to skin a cat but coming to the race right and finding racing luck, is usually the difference before victory and the agony of defeat. The early Cup predictions follow so keep them in mind with the big day is at hand. Here are Friday’s prognostications; Juvenile Fillies – Executivepriviledge Juvenile Sprint – Handsome Jack Marathon – Eldaafer Filly And Mare Turf – The Fugue Juvenile Fillies Turf – Spring Venture Ladies Classic – My Miss Aurelia Saturday Bc Turf Sprint – California Flag Bc Filly And Mare Sprint – Winding Way Bc Dirt Mile – Shackleford Turf – Point Of Entry Sprint – Amazombie Mile – Moonlight Cloud Juvenile Turf – Balance The Books Juvenile – Know More Classic - Game On Dude Brian Mulligan was the main West Coast linemaker for 17 years for the Daily Racing Form writing under the non de plume of “SWEEP.” He continues to contribute to the Daily Racing Form writing “A Closer Look” analysis daily

DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR Argo -

As the American Embassy in Tehran was being overrun six Americans managed to get out through a back door and find refuge at the home of the Canadian Ambassador. While the world watched the hostage crisis in by the embassy play out those six hid in David Ramsey fear. After a few months the United States government decides they have to get them out because the revolutionaries will soon be onto them. They turn to a CIA extraction expert who comes up with a bizarre plot to get them out. Based on a true story taken from declassified documents “Argo” is a tense hold your breath thriller that not only “could” happen - it did. The cast is brilliant, the script is crisp and the direction is masterful. “Argo” is a must see. Look for this film during awards season.

Here Comes the Boom When the music program at his school is threatened Scott Voss vows to save it but he only has until the end of the school year to come up with the money. He stumbles upon mixed martial arts fighting and learns that he can make money even if he loses. He goes into training with the help of the music teacher and the school nurse, who he has a crush on. As he gets better he picks up professional help in the form of trainers. He is reenergized as a teacher and it makes a difference

throughout the school. I went in expecting another stupid unfunny Happy Madison non-comedy but I was very pleasantly surprised. “Here Comes the Boom” is laugh out loud funny and it’s heartwarming, as well. When you leave a theatre happy you saw the film - it was worth the price of admission and that’s what happens here. 22 ARIZONA PLAYER October 2012

Seven Psychopaths Larry is a screenwriter who is having a hard time with his latest screenplay. He has a great title, “Seven Psychopaths”, but that it is all he has. He is stuck because he doesn’t want to write a violent story that would go with the title. In the meantime, a serial killer called the “Jack of Diamonds” is making headlines killing members of the local mob. Billy - an actor who is Larry’s best friend, works with a partner Hans, making money by kidnapping dogs and returning them for the reward. When they take the Shih-Tzu that belongs to a crazy mob leader, who will do anything to get it back, things get really crazy. While it is a bloody violent film it is also laugh-out-loud funny. The cast is perfect in this unique comedy crime caper, as is the writing and direction.

David’s Video Details Moonrise Kingdom

In the 1960’s on an island off the coast New England a young boy runs away from scout camp and at the same time young girl runs away from her home. The scout leader rallies the rest of the scouts to find him while the girl’s parents and the local police start their own search. Neither group as any idea the two are linked or even know each other. The boy and girl have fallen in love and arranged to meet and run away together unbeknownst to anyone else. The town and the entire island is turned upside down in this quirky film. The cast is terrific but it’s the writing and direction that make it a film to remember. “Moonrise Kingdom” is different and that’s what makes it very good.

Rock of Ages

In 1987 a girl from a small town arrives in Los Angeles to pursue her dream of making it in the music business. She meets boy on the Sunset Strip with the same dream and they both end up working in the hottest Rock ‘n’ Roll club in the country, The Bourbon. The Bourbon itself is in a precarious financial situation and its owners are counting on the upcoming final concert of the superstar rock band Arsenal with Stacee Jaxx to get them financially healthy. There are only two problems Jaxx is notoriously unreliable and the new mayor’s wife is leading a campaign to clean up the strip starting with the Bourbon. Based on the Broadway musical “Rock of Ages” is a standard story with a few twists but it is the performances that make it a fun and worthwhile.

A couple of explorers believe they found a clue to the origins of Earth in ancient cave art. It leads them to the moon of a planet across the universe. After their ship, Prometheus, lands on the moon they discover what appears to be a man-made structure and start exploring it. Will they find the origins or the end of the Earth? Director Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created in “Alien” and while this is not a prequel it does have some of the elements along with the feel and tension of the original. While it leaves a lot of questions unanswered “Prometheus” is an edge-of-yourseat sci-fi ride delivered by a master of the genre. ARIZONA PLAYER October 2012 23

THE PICK

$1,000,000 is Perfect Timing It took a while for Matthew Housman to get his check on August 7, 2012, but get it he did. The $50 Million Money Mania Scratchers was accidently torn in half by the clerk. Since there happened to be two Lottery representatives in the store at the time, they assured him that the ticket would be validated; it would just take a little longer. Matthew originally started to play the $50 Million Money Mania because the different colors of the ticket caught his eye. He’s been playing them since they came out, and this time he bought two from the Lottery Express machine. He scratched them in his car in the parking lot, and the first words out of his mouth were, “Thank you, God!” Then, after the ticket was taped back together, he went to tell his wife. Her first words were, “Are you serious?” The $50 Million Money Mania Scratchers gives the $1,000,000 winner the choice of either an annuity or a lump sum. Since Matthew chose the lump sum, his win was $625,000 before taxes. The timing of this win is perfect. First, he and his wife plan to make a tithe to their church. Then they’re going to pay off all of their bills, buy a house without a mortgage, and save the rest. The winning ticket was purchased from Fry’s Marketplace on Stapley Drive in Mesa.

THE PROBLEM SOLVER After being married for nearly 40 years, Jerry took a careful look at his wife, while sipping on his morning coffee and said: “Honey…I was just thinking, 40 years ago, we were living in a cheap apartment, drove a junk car, we slept on a second hand sofa bed and watched a crummy 19-inch black-and-white TV….but every night I got to sleep with a hot 20 year-old girl.” Jerry paused and then continued: “Now -- I have a $500,000 home, a $40,000 car, a king-size bed and a large-screen TV in the bedroom, but…now, I’m sleeping with a wrinkled 60-year-old woman - It

seems to me - you’re not holding up your side of this.” Jerry’s wife -- a very reasonable woman -- put down her coffee cup, smiled and replied, “Sweetie, why don’t you go out…find that hot 20-year-old girl to sleep with… and I’ll help make that dream of yours come true, because you will be living…once again in a cheap apartment, driving a junk car, sleeping on a sofa and watching a crummy black-and-white TV.” Jerry took another sip of coffee, nodded his head and thought; aren’t older women great? They really know how to solve an old man’s problems.

THE BIG SURPRISE Bernie turned 80, so his friends and family threw him a party he would never forget. They rented a banquet hall at one of the most expensive casinos in Las Vegas, with food drinks and entertainment. What a party it was! His friends also booked Bernie a luxury suite for him to relax in after the party. At about 9pm, Bernie thanked everyone, but said he was tired and was heading to his room to retire. Little did he know of the big surprise his friends had arranged for him.

They had hired a beautiful “Lady of the Evening” to make his 80th birthday complete. An hour later Bernie was reading a book in bed when there was a knock on the door. He tossed on a robe, put on his glasses and opened the door to find a sexy young blond dressed as a French Maid. Bernie stared at the gorgeous woman and then asked…“Can I help you?” The blond smiled and said “I’ve been sent here to offer you some SUPER-SEX!” Bernie thought for a moment and replied…”I’LL TAKE THE SOUP”
