Big City Suited Sevens” nets winner $70,000 Gilbert, Arizona resident Douglas became the first winner of Lone Butte Casino’s “Big City Suited Sevens” promotion on December 4th. The $70,000 payout was triggered when the east valley resident was dealt a winning Blackjack hand made up of three sevens of the same suit while the dealer also had a seven of the same suit as his up-card. “The Big City Suited Sevens” promotion adds a unique element to our Blackjack games at Lone Butte Casino,” said Table Games Director, Larry McKiernan. “We are thrilled that Douglas was able to win this promotion.” The Big City Suited Sevens promotion gets its name in part from the sports themed, Big City Sports Lounge at Lone Butte Casino. The one-of-a-kind card room combines sports memorabilia, flat screen televisions, stadium-style food and popular table games to create an atmosphere like no other casino offering in Arizona. Lone Butte Casino is located at 1077 S. Kyrene Road in Chandler – Just take the 202 Loop to the Kyrene exit and you’re there.

A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER

Jingle Bells & Whistles

hate to admit it but I kind of like walking into a casino by this time of the year Linda Boyd and seeing glittery ornaments, a brightly decorated tree and a holidaythemed promo along with accompanying props. When management makes their contests seasonal there’s extra incentive to want to hear your name called and have a shot at a prize. Of course there’s no guarantee that one of your 250,000 entries will be selected instead of a player with a single ticket. My friend, Mary, won a car a while back and she had but one lone entry. Still, I’m all for playing the odds and that means reading the rules carefully and trying to earn the most entries possible. As I’ve said in the past, you’ll have no worries about filling out endless forms with your name, player card number and so on anymore. The computer alleviates that necessity by issuing virtual tickets. Slots: Here’s where you’ll get the most whistles and bells and even some jingling vibrations on the newer devices for your gambling dollars. Lots of entertainment value but some are not too good as far as contest entries or even establishing a higher average daily theo (ADT). Here’s why. ADT: Average daily theo, or the amount of dollars the casino expects to earn off of your play, determines the level of slot card you receive as well as the value of your mailed offers. This is based on

12 ARIZONA PLAYER December 2012

the average amount of money you run through devices or a combination of felt games and slots, times the average ER (expected return) of your chosen games. For example, if your selections have an average ER of 90%, meaning the casino has a 10% advantage and you run an average of $2000 through the machines per day of play, then you’re worth $200 per visit to the house. (10% of $2000=$200.) The level of slot card and comps you receive will be grouped with players worth around the same amount to the house. In addition, if the casino awards 1 entry per hundred dollars of play, then you’ll receive 20 contest entries as well. Contest Entries: As I’ve said many times, there is no way to know the ER for any slot machine game, but, in general, it is lower than classic video poker (VP) games. If the VP choice is extremely ugly, then you will know (use my pay tables) and can choose not to play. So, one would logically assume that the house will offer more contest entries for slots which have a bigger house advantage. Not the case at all; in fact, the opposite is true. The number of entry tickets is based on your coin-in and every time you’re playing a bonus round that doesn’t require additional coins to be deposited you’re diminishing your coin-in during the time it takes to play the bonus rounds. Overall you will lose more on a slot machine with say an 80% ER than a VP device with a 95% ER, but you’ll still get fewer tickets. Video Poker: Unlike slots, you can be sure of the ER for all video poker devices by using the tables in

my book; you’ll always find the pay schedule on casino machines (push the “see pay” button on the device) and you’ll be able to match the schedule with the one in my book to find the ER for that game (that figure won’t be on the casino device). In addition, if you select a decent version of a low-risk game, like Jacks or Better (JOB), that pays double your wager for two pair instead of even money, you’ll run a lot of money through the machine on your session bankroll. This translates to more promo entry tickets for your play as well as more slot club points on your card. Final Thoughts: Certainly there’s nothing wrong with rushing towards the latest machine in the “Tarzan” series or sitting at a “Buffalo” device--I’ve done it and it’s lots of fun. However, make sure the lure of all the extra whistles and bells doesn’t delude you into believing that there will be more jingle in your jeans when you leave. Also, be aware that with slots you will decrease both your ADT and number of earned contest entries on your allocated session bankroll. Linda Boyd - a long-time table game player before turning to video poker, also writes for Southern Gaming & Midwest Gaming and Travel, her book, “The Video Poker Edge” includes free removable pay schedules and free strategy cards for the most popular games. Look for her story in the 2012 Edition of “American Casino Guide” (ACG) and her You Tube video, also with ACG. The 2010 Second Edition of her book is available in both paperback and kindle. The Card Counting Myth

hen most players here the term “Card Counter” they by TJ Jorgensen think of a blackjack super hero who can defeat the casinos anytime they play and the one who strikes terror and fear into all casinos. Whenever players see someone walk away a big winner, they usually say, “He must be a card counter.” On top of that, most players believe that card counting is illegal, it’s not. Counters use the same information that all other players have available to them, just in a different way. The Casino, just like any other business does have the right to refuse service to anyone, so they can tell a player that they are no longer welcome to play blackjack if they believe that they count cards.

WHAT IS CARD COUNTING?

Card counting is how highly skilled blackjack players gain a mathematical advantage over the casino. A card counter keeps mental track of the high and low cards. High cards are any card that counts 10 or 11 - low cards 2-6. As the cards are played the counter talleys these cards and knows if there is a surplus or shortage of high cards. When there is a surplus of high cards, it is to the player’s advantage - so he will increase his bet. When there is a shortage of high cards it is to the casinos advantage so he would bet the minimum. In addition, there is a playing strategy

18 ARIZONA PLAYER December 2012

that has 43 changes over basic strategy that goes along with card counting. By using a betting and playing strategy along with card counting it gives the counter a long term advantage over the casino.

CARD COUNTERS ALWAYS WIN!

NOT TRUE - Card counting doesn’t assure a player will win, in fact I only win on average, 7 out of every 12 times I play. What card counting does do is give the player the opportunity to bet more when the odds are in his favor. By doing this the counter will walk away with more money in the long run than a player who is not a card counter.

WHAT ABOUT 6 DECK GAMES?

I’ve heard players say that a counter can’t play in multiple deck games - Totally false. Here is what goes through a card counters mind. The first hand out of a six deck shoe with six players is dealt. As the cards are dealt face up I count them in pairs then finally the dealers up card. This gives me a running count, I then divide my running count by the number of decks left to be played which gives me a true count. Then I look at my hand and use my true count to determine the correct play given the information I have. I count the hit cards as they come out and add them to my running count. As the dealer completes his hand I again take my running count and divide it by the number of decks left to be played and use that information to determine my bet size for the next hand. Then the entire process starts over again as

the cards are dealt for the next hand.

THE ADVANTAGE FOR A CARD COUNTER The advantage over the casino for card counters is very small around 1 1/2% so there is no room for mistakes. The strategy must be played perfectly or you will be betting more at the wrong time and it will end up costing you money. There are so many distractions in the casino that most people lose track of the count. I have been playing so long that I can joke with the dealer, talk to the person next to me order a coke from the waitress and still play a perfect game. In all of the years that I have been playing blackjack in Arizona I have only seen 2 players that were at the skill level that it takes to beat the casinos month after month, year after year. Card Counting is something that takes a lot of work to master and play effectively and the truth is most players aren’t willing to put in that kind of time. Card counting can be mastered if you are willing to put in the time. I am always amused at the length that casinos will go in order to defeat card counters when in reality there just aren’t very many of them out there. T.J. Jorgensen has been a professional blackjack player for over twenty years. He is well known for his live tournament play and has competed against and beaten some of the top players in the world, and has won the prestigious “World Series of Blackjack” – His book “Beating the casino at their own game” is available at: www.freewebs.com/tjsblackjackcorner or by e-mail tj4justice1@msn.com

lottery news Arizona Lottery ON THE ROAD! By Phil Scudella OK…So you’re not the November 28th Arizona Lottery POWERBALL winner from Arizona who gets to share the half billion dollar jackpot with the co-winner from Missouri – I know just how you feel. But, if you’re not out there winning some great Arizona Lottery prizes by not stopping by their special “on the road” events around the state - you’re really missing out! Here’s why I can say that. On Saturday November 10th , I stopped by the Safeway store at 107th Ave & Olive in the Peoria to take advantage of a 90 cent per gallon gas discount, while gassing up, I noticed a Safeway parking lot promotion going on featuring the Arizona Lottery. The lottery’s mascot Windfall Willie was there…plus a radio station set-up. I drove over to check it out. The Arizona Lottery had a booth and a prize wheel, Safeway had a food booth offering free Safeway Select appetizers. The Arizona Cardinals also had a booth, plus their zany mascot “Big Red” was there giving away promotional items. The Arizona Lottery had a terrific promotion going on – purchase two $10 scratcher tickets and you received a free prize – just spin the prize wheel to see what you won like; Arizona Lottery

hats, t-shirts, travel cups and much more along with the chance to win several grand prizes – A pair Arizona Cardinals lower level tickets to an upcoming game worth $200, Just by getting the prize wheel to stop on certain numbers! Well, I love to gamble and I love to WIN! So sign me up coach. I got in line and purchased the two $10 Scratchers and spun the wheel - no grand prize but a choice from the table, I took the I’m A PLAYER hat…great choice, terrific motto. I then asked “If I buy 2 more $10 scratchers, can I spin again?” “OF COURSE” I was told – So that second 20 bucks led to another spin with Windfall Willie cheering me on. Click, click, click, Then Willie gave me a “Thumbs up” signal as the wheel stopped on the GRAND PRIZE number! What a great day! No thinkin’ thing here - I took tickets to the Chicago Bears game on Dec 23, then scratched my four $10 Scratchers, one ticket paid $20! Lottery news Spur-Of-The Moment $1,000,000 Glen Van Wagoner, a winter resident of Mesquite, is not a regular Lottery player, but when he finally decided to purchase some Powerball tickets, it was the right time and the right place. He and his wife drove up to Beaver Dam Lodge, and he said, “Let’s buy some Lottery tickets. It’ll give us something to play during the month.” He ended up buying two multi-draw Quick Picks on Powerball. He then put them in his briefcase and forgot about them. That briefcase went to Utah and Texas, was left in hotel rooms, the back seat of a rental car and numerous other places Glen said, “I was very lucky.” Back in Utah, he decided to check the local Mesquite news online, and that’s where he read about a $1,000,000 Powerball ticket that was still unclaimed. He knew it couldn’t be his, but it jogged his memory. Glen remembered the Powerball tickets

24 ARIZONA PLAYER December 2012

Happy Holidays Treasure! he’d purchased and got them out of the briefcase to check. He saw that his numbers for the September 15 drawing matched the winning numbers, but had no idea what he’d won until he did a little more checking. He said, “My heart was jumping all over the place.” It took him a few minutes to convince his wife that he wasn’t seeing things. Because he’d forgotten about the tickets, he didn’t redeem his $1,000,000 Powerball until October 10, almost one month later. The couple plan to pay off some bills and invest the rest for retirement. Glen said, “It’s been so much fun, I’m ready to do it again.” The winning ticket was purchased from Beaver Dam Lodge located at 452 Old Highway 91 North, Beaver Dam, AZ.

Pamela McCarty of Show low began buying the Holiday Treasures Scratchers as soon as the game was introduced this holiday season. She had never won anything big, but would frequently win anywhere from $10 to $50 -- until this week. She stopped at the station to get a drink, and while paying at the counter, on an impulse, pointed to the ticket and told the clerk, “Give me one of those, maybe I can win some Christmas money.” She had no idea she’d win a lot more than just Christmas money. Pamela continued on to work and when she got to the office, scratched the ticket and was convinced she was seeing things – she couldn’t have won $100,000 – but she had. She quickly showed her boss, and then called her husband. He had her read off the number of zeros on the ticket to be sure it really was $100,000. She then took the ticket to a local store to be scanned, where the clerk had her fill out and sign the back of the ticket before she left the store. She and her husband drove down to Phoenix last night and came to the Lottery first thing Friday morning. They were still in a state of disbelief until they saw the check. The couple plan to pay off some bills, and put the rest into a retirement account.

DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey -

When a dragon with a lust for gold attacks and captures the dwarf kingdom under Lonely Mountain its inhabitants are spread throughout middle earth. Years later the wizard Gandalf by the Grey knocks on the door of Bilbo Baggins David Ramsey to enlist him in an adventure. He insists that Hobbits do not go on adventures. That evening to his surprise Bilbo’s home hosts a band of dwarves waiting for the dwarf King who will lead them. Before he knows it he is part of their adventure. Along the way they battle Goblins and Trolls, visit the Elf city of Rivendale and Bilbo meets Gollum. This prequel to “The Lord of The Rings” saga sets everything in motion that changes Bilbo, Middle Earth and the Shire forever. “The Hobbit” is a very good film with lots of action.

Hyde Park on the Hudson In 1939 President Franklin D. Roosevelt is about to host the King and Queen of England in a historic visit to the United States. The King is coming hoping to secure American support in the coming war but the country’s sentiment is not in his favor. Meanwhile, FDR has started an affair with a distant cousin, Daisy. FDR prefers his home in Hyde Park, New York to the White House largely because of the privacy it offers. This film is more about his private life than the politics of the time. The performance are very good, particularly Samuel West who plays the King of England. The behind the scenes look at FDR’s presidency and private life does reveal some things most people didn’t know about, but at its heart - this is a story of a love affair.

David’s Video Details Ted

As a child John wishes his teddy bear were alive and could talk. It happened and they became great friends. Now as adult John’s childhood friend, Ted, is becoming a problem in his relationship with Lori. Everyone takes Ted being alive for granted but he is a stuffed teddy bear, with a frat-boy attitude. John asks Ted to find a job and move out so He and Lori take their relationship to the next level. He does but there are complications - hilarious ones. “Ted” is one of the funniest movies I have seen in a long time. The humor is smart but raunchy this film is not for children.

Pitch Perfect

Beca does not want to go to college, she just wants to be a DJ, but her father insists. She ends up at Barden where she is recruited for an all-girl a cappella singing group, the Barden Bellas. The Bellas went to the Collegian National Finals last year but after disaster they lost to the male group from the same college. Beca brings a new outlook to the group, much to the chagrin of the leader, and before long they are on their way to the finals. The singing is great but it’s the humor that makes this film worth watching more than once. “Pitch Perfect” is one of the best feel good comedies in a long time.

Total Recall

In a dystopian future the world has changed dramatically after a global war. Doug Quaid is a factory worker with a beautiful wife but something is missing. When he goes to Rekall to get a vacation memory he triggers an old memory that brings the authorities down on him. Suddenly his whole world is turned upside down with his wife among those trying to kill him. It’s not long before he is in the middle of a revolt and possible invasion. This remake is better than the previous version with a better cast, a more compelling story and it doesn’t get side-tracked by weak attempts at humor. The non-stop action in “Total Recall” will leave you needing a nap.

The Gay Ranch Hand A successful Arizona rancher died and left everything to his devoted much younger wife Gloria. She was young, beautiful and determined to keep the ranch, but knew very little about ranching, so she decided to place an ad in the newspaper for a hired hand. Dozens of so called “cowboys” applied for the job, but after the interviews, she narrowed it down to just two – Maurice who was openly gay and Billy Bob who had a serious drinking problem. She thought long and hard and finally decided to hire Maurice, figuring it would be safer to have him around the house than a drunk. Maurice proved to be a hard worker who put in long hours every day. For months, the two of them worked from sun-

rise to sunset and the ranch was doing very well. Then one day, the young widow said to the hired hand, “Maurice, You have worked really hard, and the ranch looks great. You should go into town and kick up your heels.” A very excited Maurice agreed and went into town that Saturday night. The night dragged by for Gloria, who waited up for his return - 2am then 3am and 4am rolled by and still no hired hand. Finally just before sunrise Maurice opened the front door and quietly began walking towards his room. As he walked past the living room, he noticed Gloria sitting on the couch with a glass of wine. She softly said to him “Maurice, please come over here” as she stood up next to the warmth of the fireplace. “Please unbutton my blouse and take it off,”

she said. The ranch hand was caught off guard, but with trembling hands did as she directed. “Now” she asked “take off my boots.” He did as she requested, ever so slowly. “Now take off my socks.” She asked. He removed them and placed them neatly by her boots. “Now, Maurice” she asked “please take off my skirt.” So slowly he unzipped the skirt and it fell to the floor, all the time watching her eyes in the fire light - “Now, you know what I want next, unsnap and remove my bra..” Again, with trembling fingers, he did as he was told and the bra fell to the floor. The young widow looked at Maurice squarely in the eyes and said, “If you ever wear my clothes into town again, you’re fired.”

Just a Farm Kid A farmer drove to a neighbor’s farmhouse and knocked at the door. A boy, about 11, opened the door “Is your dad or mom home?” said the farmer. “No, they went to town.” “What about your brother, Howard? Is he here?” “No, he went with Mom and Dad.” The farmer stood there for a few minutes, shifting from one foot to the other, mumbling to himself.

28 ARIZONA PLAYER December 2012

“I know where all the tools are, if you want to borrow one, or I can give Dad a message.” “Well,” said the farmer uncomfortably, “I really wanted to talk to your Dad. It’s about your brother Howard getting my daughter Suzy pregnant”. The boy thought for a moment... “You would have to talk to Dad about that. I know he charges $500 for the bull and $50 for the pig, but I don’t know what his charge is for Howard.”
