gaming news TALKING STICK TO HOST MMA FIGHTS Talking Stick Resort, an enterprise of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, proudly announces its partnership with King of the Cage (KOTC), one of the largest Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promotional institutes in the United States. On Saturday, January 19th the resort will host its first match in the Salt River Grand Ballroom beginning at 7pm. The event will feature fighters battling for the KOTC Bantamweight World Title, along with eight other matches. “Talking Stick Resort’s affiliation with KOTC is truly exciting because it opens up new opportunities for entertainment for our guests,” said Peter Arceo, senior director of sales and marketing for Talking Stick Resort. “Since its inception, MMA fighting has continuously grown in popularity and has become an entertainment staple for many making it a natural fit for us.” Founded in 1998 by Terry Trebilock, KOTC features experienced combat and up and coming MMA fighters. It is a full contact sport that mixes several different martial arts. During the bouts, one person’s martial arts style is pitted against another until one of the opponents is knocked out, tapped, a professional stoppage is made or a

judge’s decision is reached. The weight division system for the institute is in accordance with the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts. The main event at Talking Stick Resort will include the title fight between Dustin Phillips and Donald Sanchez. Each will be fighting for the Bantamweight World Title, which is equivalent to Featherweight division of 145 pounds. Other divisions in KOTC include the 135-pound division, Flyweight and the 125-pound, Junior Flyweight division. The only divisions outside the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts are the 160pound Junior Welterweight and the 230-pound Cruiserweight. For more information of the upcoming KOTC MMA fights, please visit talkingstickresort.com or call (480) 850-7734 for tickets. Guests must be 21 years old to attend. Additionally, the card and schedule are subject to change. Talking Stick Resort is an AAA Four Diamond Rated Resort and a central landmark within the emerging Talking Stick Cultural and Entertainment Destination. Located in Scottsdale, just east of the Loop 101 on Indian Bend Road, TSR is independently owned and operated by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa

Indian Community. The property offers culturally rich experiences and luxury accommodations

A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER

The Tax Man Cometh “Don’t tax you, don’t tax me, tax the guy behind the tree”

h, January, still beautiful and aromatic in Arizona, but it’s time to by pay the piper. You should Linda Boyd be receiving all relevant IRS documents by the last day of this month so you can start submitting your tax returns from now until April 15. Of course if you file late without asking for an extension, then be prepared for a penalty. If you’re an Arizona casino player, however, there’s some good news. It’s one of the states that allow you to fade your winnings against your losses. That means if you file itemized deductions, then you only pay taxes on your actual gambling profits after the aggregate year-long losses are subtracted from that figure. Always follow the advice of your tax accountant but be aware that they’re probably not experts regarding gaming legislation. Here are some tips. W-2G: This is also know as “Certain Gambling Winnings”, and will be issued by the casino anytime a single jackpot is at or over $1200. The IRS will also receive a copy (states base their data on the federal information) and the form must be signed by the winner. I do not have them remove money from my winnings unless I am ahead for that calendar year. You will have to show staff a social security card as well as an ID, like a driver’s license, if you don’t want cash removed from your prize. Make sure the amount you claim for winnings (federal/state tax returns) is at least as much as the aggregate amount on you W-2G’s, even though you may have sustained a loss for the year.

12 ARIZONA PLAYER January 2013

Diaries: You’ve probably seen people filling in data at the end of their gambling session, especially if you spend a lot of time in Vegas. They’re creating what’s known as a “diary” or a written record of their session results. The exact information varies from person-to-person, but typical headings are date, location, machine played and amount won or lost. Sometimes a casino provides a free diary so ask at the slot club desk. Win/Loss Statements: Most Arizona casinos will provide you with a record of your winnings and losses for the year at no charge. Be aware that you must be using your player’s card for them to have that data. Technology: There was a booth at the latest G2E (Global Gaming Expo) that keeps track of all data associated with your play. This means that casinos with this program are capable of handing you the information, if requested, so there’s no need to keep a diary. This is an especially good thing if you’re gambling on a vacation, say a cruise ship, and unlikely to return. Audits: I’ve received notice of what’s called a CP2000 or paper gaming audit more than once. First, you might feel temporary anxiety (I did), but don’t panic. Simply start the process of gathering supporting documents as soon as possible and write an explanatory letter as well. I contacted my CPA and he offered assistance; however, I chose to submit the paperwork and letter on my own. The more data you are able to send the better your odds of settling the issue without owing money to either the state or federal government.

Anonymous

Agent Coin Toss: Although I have had federal tax audits requiring I meet with an IRS agent, my gambling audits were CP2000’s and handled by mail. I have read numerous accounts of gaming audits written by others and I’m struck by inconsistencies. The more supporting documents you have the better you will do and you shouldn’t expect an audit if your winnings/losses are relatively low. Split Jackpots: If you and others are splitting a reportable amount you should ask for the form that allows you to claim the divided jackpot. That way one individual won’t unfairly be stuck with the tax liability. Final Thoughts: Getting a notice of a gambling or any other audit from your state or federal tax organization is never a reason to celebrate. However, it’s still a gray area as far as definitive laws and there are few experts outside of Nevada. The more documentation you can provide the better your odds of not owing anything more than you’ve already paid, often that’s zero. It’s never a good idea to pay more than you owe out of fear. If you want to donate then it’s perfectly legal to send Uncle Sam a check anytime the spirit moves you or, better yet, just give to your favorite charity. Linda Boyd - a long-time table game player before turning to video poker, also writes for Southern Gaming & Midwest Gaming and Travel, her book, “The Video Poker Edge” includes free removable pay schedules and free strategy cards for the most popular games. Look for her story in the 2012 Edition of “American Casino Guide” (ACG) and her You Tube video, also with ACG. The 2010 Second Edition of her book is available in both paperback and kindle. TJ’s Blackjack corner

Should You “Push Your Luck?”

ecently I had a friend ask me to go out a play some blackjack and by TJ Jorgensen coach them in how to play a winning game. We met at the casino and both sat down at the same $10 table. She placed her bet and then placed a bet on the “Push your luck” side bet, asserting that she always wins when playing this way. Well......she didn’t. In this side bet you get paid when you “Push” (Tie the dealer). I tried to explain to her that when you play perfect basic strategy the house has around a .51% advantage over the player in a six deck game. When you start playing side bets the house advantage jumps to 25% almost guaranteeing a loss for the player.

Since I have never analyzed the push your luck side bet I thought I would take a look and see how bad this bet is for the player. After all it does pay 10 to 1 when you win this side bet. I was surprised to find that the house edge on this bet is small compared to that of other side bets. If you play the max on your side bet which is equal to 1/2 of your main bet the house edge goes from .51% to around .76% for a six deck game. That’s a cost of .025% however you are getting 10 to 1 odds. I took this a little further. If you were dead set on playing this side bet you actually would discard basic strategy and use a different strategy. You would end up hitting most of your hands under 17 regardless of what the dealer was showing.

I am sure you would really make the other players lose their minds when you’re hitting 14 against a dealer up card of a six - but that would be the correct play. So you might want to wait until you are alone with the dealer or at least ask the other players if they mind if you play crazy. In any event here is the correct strategy for “Push Your Luck” for a six deck game. T.J. Jorgensen has been a professional blackjack player for over twenty years. He is well known for his live tournament play and has competed against and beaten some of the top players in the world, and has won the prestigious “World Series of Blackjack” – His book “Beating the casino at their own game” is available at: www.freewebs. com/tjsblackjackcorner or by e-mail tj4justice1@ msn.com

lottery news Another Fountain Hills Millionaire! The Arizona Lottery has announced that the $1 million Powerball second prize winning ticket was claimed by a Fountain Hills resident, Lance Johns who matched all five numbers excluding the Powerball for the draw on Saturday, January 5. Johns is a regular Arizona Lottery player, but says that he almost didn’t buy a ticket for this Powerball draw. He always plays one Quick Pick and four lines of his own numbers consisting of significant family numbers, like his and his wife’s birth weights. He and his wife are both retired and plan to use their winnings toward the purchase of a new home and new cars. Johns purchased his $1 million winning Powerball ticket at the Circle K located at 17125 E. Shea Blvd. in Fountain Hills. The winning numbers were 26-30-49-51 &54 The Powerball number was 25. This win comes on the heels of the recordbreaking $587.5 million Powerball jackpot winning ticket also being sold to a fountain Hills resident, but that winning ticket was sold at the 4 Sons Food Store in Fountain Hills, and claimed on December 7, 2012.

New Year, New Grandbaby & $100,000 win! “It is truly remarkable to have another top prize winner from Fountain Hills, especially so soon after the record-breaking jackpot win,” said Karen Bach, director of budget, products, and communications for the Arizona Lottery. “We are thrilled that Powerball produced another new millionaire in Arizona. The money won in Arizona helps the economy and businesses here in our state.” This is the sixteenth $1 million Powerball second prize winning ticket sold in Arizona since the $2 Powerball launched in January 2012. The $2 Powerball offers many appealing features to players, including better overall odds and jackpots that grow bigger, faster. The starting jackpot doubled from $20 million to $40 million and the second prize for matching all five numbers, without the Powerball, increased from $200,000 to $1 million. Arizona Lottery players must be 21 years or older to purchase or redeem tickets. Overall odds vary by game. In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, these materials may be made available in an alternate format.

What a way to usher in the New Year! Leonard Edwards and his, wife Sandy, ended up celebrating the arrival of 2013 with the birth of their granddaughter and winning the $100,000 top prize on Arizona Lottery’s Ultimate Crossword Scratcher. The Edwards were in the maternity ward at a local hospital, where Leonard was helping his son-in-law coach his daughter. They took a short break, went to a nearby Station 66on Thompson Ave in Kingman and purchased two of the Ultimate Crosswords. Leonard scratched one of the tickets, but hadn’t won anything. When they got back to the maternity ward, he gave the other ticket to Sandy. She scratched it and was quiet for a few minutes; then she showed the ticket to Leonard and said, “Look at this!” After their granddaughter weighed in at eight pounds, five ounces, it was back to the waiting room where at least four additional family members checked the winning ticket. After everyone agreed it looked like a winner, they took the signed ticket across the street to a convenience store to have it scanned. The clerk gave them the paperwork and told them they would have to go to the Lottery office in Phoenix to redeem their ticket. They immediately put the ticket in a secure place and returned to the hospital. The couple said, they shed a few happy tears and felt a little shaky, but were thrilled and felt that 2013 was going to be a great year. The happy couple plan to pay off some bills, share some with their family, and put the rest away for their nest egg. They had one comment for Arizona Lottery players, “Average, everyday people really do win….Look at us!”

Morsels found on the road The Original Pancake House

The Apple Pancake

By Phil Scudella In 2013 I am returning to my quest for great food, sometimes found in remote Arizona towns. It has been several years since I did this column regularly – but many of my friends who over the years have asked me for a recommendation on places I have discovered while on the road have asked me to get back to what I really love – enjoying a great meal and talking about it. I will admit this is the first chain breakfast restaurant I have ever featured. One thing that makes this place unique is that The Original Pancake House in Scottsdale is the only one in Arizona. Almost any day you can catch owner Ron Horton sipping coffee and tasting a creation he made himself while chatting with some of his “regulars” at the small counter next to the kitchen. I have known Ronnie for over 20 years and he is one of the nicest and most genuine people I know.

A delicious concoction all of our own! We start with a special batter, pour it over fresh sautéed apples and bake it halfway, and then we glaze it with cinnamon sugar, flip it over and bake it again! What comes out of the oven in a delightfully bubbly dish brimming with apples and cinnamon - Our best seller - it has been copied, but never duplicated!

Dutch Baby

This recipe was derived from the kitchens of great German cooks, oven baked and served with whipped butter, lemon and a dusting of powdered sugar. One of our lightest pancakes!

49’er Flap Jacks

From the Mother Lode Country - Plate sized, chewy, and tender. Served with whipped butter and hot syrup

Ron’s Special Southwest Eggs

Scrambled with caramelized onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, seasoning plus cheddar cheese and served with four potato pancakes.

Omelets

Their unique omelets, including the mushroom omelet topped with homemade rich mushroom sherry sauce, are rolled in a skillet and then oven baked to give you a splendidly light, moist delicacy.

Crepes

The Original Pancake House, winner of the James Beard Award, opened their Scottsdale location in April of 1988. It has been voted one of the Top Ten Best Restaurants of Arizona, and owner Ron Horton, known as “the pancake man”, makes sure that commitment to quality and attention to detail are on the menu each and every day. Many of my friends like the standard sausage, ham, or bacon and eggs oPoker_1/3page_vp ad.qxp 10/12/09 12:31 PM Page 1 with hash browns and pancakes. That’s just fine but they are really missing out on some of my favorites, these “specialties of the house”

These gourmet crepes include the cherry kijafa crepe, a blend of tart cherries and sweet Danish cherry wine. Mandarin Crepes - the Crepe Suzette of the Orient - Three delicate crepes rolled and topped with Mandarin orange segments tempered with Triple Sec. Topped with hot tropical syrup and lightly dusted with powdered sugar. They also feature the finest fresh fruits of the season, fresh squeezed OJ and the signature coffee is specially blended, roasted and ground for The Original Pancake House to complement your meal. The Original Pancake is located 6840 E Camelback Rd. in Scottsdale – stop in you will be delighted with the food and friendliness. The hours are seasonal, but usually from 7am - 2pm. Top Ten Films of 2012

1 Les Misérables The venerated stage musical of Victor Hugo’s classic novel finally comes to the big screen and it is spectacular. Having never seen the stage version I can’t compare it but I was blown away by this film. The cast is very good, Anne Hathaway is unforgettable as Fantine. The story has everything from romance to action to humor as it tells the story of Jean Valjean, a former felon who breaks parole and Javert, the police inspector obsessed with bringing him to justice. Along the way Valjean comforts a dying woman and agrees to help her child. It all culminates in the 1932 June Rebellion in Paris. The characters are vivid, the story engaging and the music unforgettable.

2 Cabin in the Woods Five college friends go on vacation to a remote cabin in the woods. They are completely isolated with no cell phone coverage or internet access. The cabin itself is weird and they find a basement full of odd stuff. This sounds like a typical horror/ slasher flick but it is anything but typical. When things start to go bad for our five friends there is more to it than they know. “Cabin in the Woods” has everything including edge-ofyour-seat action, bloody horror, some 26 ARIZONA PLAYER January 2013

very funny stuff and more than a surprise or two. It is one of the best films of the year.

3 Argo As the American Embassy in Tehran was being overrun six Americans managed to get out through a back door and find refuge at the home of the Canadian Ambassador. While the world watched the hostage crisis in the embassy play out those six hid in fear. After a few months the United States government decides the have to get them out because the revolutionaries will soon be onto them. They turn to a CIA extraction expert who comes up with a bizarre plot to get them out. Based on a true story taken from declassified documents “Argo” is a tense hold your breath thriller that not only could happen, it did. The cast is brilliant, the script is crisp and the direction is masterful. “Argo” is a must see. Look for this film during awards season.

4 Moonrise Kingdom In the 1960’s on an island off the coast New England a young boy runs away from scout camp and at the same time young girl runs away from her home. The scout leader rallies the rest of

the scouts to find him while the girl’s parents and the local police start their own search. Neither group as any idea the two are linked or even know each other. The boy and girl have fallen in love and arranged to meet and run away together unbeknownst to anyone else. The town and the entire island is turned upside down in this quirky film. The cast is terrific but it’s the writing and direction that make it a film to remember. “Moonrise Kingdom” is different and that’s what makes it so good.

5 The Perks of Being a Wallflower Charlie starts his freshman year at high school as an introverted, lonely outsider struggling with the suicide of his best friend and his own mental issues but two seniors, Sam and her step-brother Patrick, take him under their wing. They are unique but popular and introduce him to life and the real world. This is more than a coming-of-age story, Stephen Chbosky adapted and directed his novel into a funny and touching film. The cast is brilliant. “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” is one of the best films of the year.

6 The Avengers Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and the Incredible Hulk join forces with Nick Fury and S. H. I. E. L. D. to defend Earth against a seemingly unstoppable enemy. Getting these four super egos to work together

may be the most difficult part. Joining the group are Hawkeye and Black Widow. All of the characters are fully fleshed out with their own personalities and back stories, without detracting from the main story. Writer/Director Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly) brings an unique and entertaining spin to this extravaganza with spectacular action and just enough humor. “The Avengers” is one of the best superhero movies ever.

7 Silver Linings Playbook Pat gets out of a state mental institution where he has been for the past 8 months because of a plea bargain. He is living with his parents because he lost everything - his house, his job and his wife. Pat is determined to rebuild his life and win his wife back, in fact it has become a bit of an obsession. His family and friends are worried about him. Then he meets Tiffany, a quirky young woman who needs a dance partner for a big contest. He agrees to be her partner if she will help him get his wife back. “Silver Linings Playbook” is a wonderful touching story with a nice touch of humor and a great cast.

8 The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey When a dragon with a lust for gold attacks and captures the dwarf kingdom under Lonely mountain its inhabitants are spread throughout middle earth. Years later the wizard Gandalf the Grey knocks on the door of Bilbo Baggins to enlist him in an adventure. That evening to his surprise Bilbo’s home hosts a band of dwarves waiting for the dwarf King who will lead them. Along the way they battle Goblins and Trolls, visit the Elf city of Rivendale and Bilbo meets Gollum. This prequel to “The Lord of The Rings” saga sets everything in motion that changes Bilbo, Middle Earth and the Shire

DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR forever. “The Hobbit” is a fun film with lots of action.

at Home” is a funny, quirky indie film well worth your time.

9 Jeff, Who Lives at Home

10 Wreck-It Ralph

Jeff is a slacker who lives in his mother’s basement. When his mother asks him to run an errand for her it sets off a chain of events that leads Jeff to discover his destiny. Jeff then spots his sister-in-law having lunch with a man and points it out to his brother causing him to believe she is having an affair. Meanwhile, Jeff’s mother is having her own problems at work. It all comes together with them all meeting up as Kevin becomes Jeff’s destiny. The cast is marvelous and the writing is witty. “Jeff, Who Lives

Wreck-it Ralph has been the villain in the classic arcade video game ‘Fix-it Felix’ for 30 years. He is tired of being lonely and desperately wants to be liked. He decides to visit other games in the arcade so he can get a medal and be a hero but by sneaking into other games he accidentally unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens all the games in the arcade. With the help of a troublemaking “glitch” from a candy-coated cart racing game he just might be able to save the arcade and learn what it really means to be

a good guy. Fun for all ages, “Wreck-it Ralph” is an instant animated classic that belongs in the Disney stable of greats.

Jokes of the Month

As we continue to celebrate our 20th Anniversary year - Here are some classic jokes from past issues. More of our reader’s favorites to make you smile or better yet, bust out in laughter!Remember, laughing daily is beneficial to your health! Phil Scudella – Publisher

If you have ever dressed a child – You may relate Miss Korleeone was helping one of her first grader pupils after school put on his boots on his first day in class and her very first day on the new job. He asked for help and she could see why. Even with her pulling and pushing, the little boots didn’t want to go on. By the time they got the boots on, she had worked up a sweat. She almost cried when the little guy said, “Teacher, they’re on the wrong feet.” She looked, and sure enough, they were. It was harder pulling the boots off than it was putting them on. She managed to keep her cool as they worked to get the boots back on - this time on the correct feet. He then announced, “These aren’t my boots.” She bit her tongue, rather than get in his face and scream, “Why didn’t you say so? ‘ like she wanted to. Once again she struggled to help him pull the ill-fitting boots off his little feet. No sooner had they got the boots off when he said, “They’re my brother’s boots. My Mom made me wear ‘em.” Now she didn’t know if she should laugh or cry. But she mustered up what grace and courage she had left to wrestle the boots on his feet again. Then with relief she put his coat on and asked, “Now, where are your mittens?’ “I stuffed ‘em in the toes of my boots.” He replied She was last seen screaming past the principal’s office yelling “I quit” She recently was released from the hospital and with her prescription for Prozac daily, has found less stress-full job at Hooter’s where she can now take any comment with a smile.

THE WALL STREET LEAP After a couple of tough years on Wall Street, Antonio makes the leap and joins a Tibetan temple. He takes a vow of silence but is allowed to say two words each year. After an arduous year of eating rice, sleeping on a wooden bed with a raggedy blanket, and working 14-hour days in the field - Antonio goes to the head monk and says, “More blankets.” Another year passes, and he asks the head monk “better food.” Antonio goes through one more year eating improved meals and sleeping well, but he’s drained by the long work days. He once again calls on the head monk and uses his two words to say, “I’m leaving.” “Good,” the head monk replies. “You’ve done nothing but complain since you got here.”

Stopped by Police at 2am An 80 year old man was stopped by the police at just outside his retirement community at about 2am and was asked by the officer where he was going at that time of night. The man replied, “I’m on my way to a lecture about alcohol abuse and the effects it has on the human body, as well as smoking and staying out late.” The officer then asked, “Really? Who’s giving that lecture at this time of night?” The man replied, “That would be my wife.”
