gaming news Bingo Bonanza at Casino Arizona

BOGO at CA

Bingo is back at Casino Arizona and there are plenty of ways to win big bucks! One way is with the property’s Bingo Bonanza where grand prize winnings can reach $20,000 and beyond. Played daily, Bingo Bonanza is a progressive game played as a coverall. At press time Bingo Bonanza jackpot stood at a whopping $37,000. “When we opened the new bingo hall last year, we made a conscious effort to offer our guests and bingo lovers a wide-array of games and ways to win cash,” said Eric Ramsey, bingo manager for Casino Arizona. “Bingo Bonanza gives our guests a sense of anticipation as the jackpot continues to grow week after week. It’s truly exciting.” Prior to the Bingo Bonanza session, 45 numbers are pre-called and marked by players. Once the game starts, the countdown to declare a jackpot winner starts in 50 called numbers or less. The first to obtain a coverall pattern within 50 numbers will win the jackpot! If no winner is determined, the game continues and a consolation prize is given to the first player to have a coverall. The progressive jackpot will remain in play and increase by $200 each Bonanza session until a player is rewarded.Once a winner has been established, the jackpot will reset to $5,000 and will continue to build daily. Bingo Bonanza games are $3 per card and run daily during matinee sessions from 12:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Daily evening sessions run from 6:30– 10 p.m. Daily matinee consolation prize is $300 and daily evening is $500.

Casino Arizona gives Bingo lovers more bang for their buck with the new BOGO special through Feb. 28 – For every electronic package purchased, players will receive another electronic package free. This “buy one, get one” offer doubles the player’s number of cards, while also doubling their chances of winning! Each of Casino Arizona’s electronic bingo machines can read up to 2,000 cards at a time! Regular games and specials are both available for purchase on the electronic machines. In addition to Casino Arizona’s Bingo BOGO offer, players will want to make sure they are registered Rewards Club members in order to earn points that can be redeemed for casino goods and services. Casino Arizona’s Bingo Hall is open daily. Daily Matinee games run from 12:30 -3:30 p.m. Evening games run from 6:30 – 10 p.m. Late night bingo offers an exciting nightclub feel every Friday and Saturday night from midnight to 2am and features a live DJ. For more information on Bingo BOGO, visit the Casino Arizona Bingo Hall or call (480) 850-7777. Players must be 21 or older to play. Casino Arizona is located in Scottsdale at the Loop 101 Freeway and McKellips Road. Independently owned and operated by the Salt River PimaMaricopa Indian Community, the property offers visitors more than 100,000 square feet devoted to gaming and entertainment.

gaming news Apache Gold Casino to add 2nd Location The San Carlos Apache Tribe is pleased to announce that the San Carlos Apache Tribal Council approved a second gaming site near the Aravaipa area of Arizona. The site is just East of Highway 77 at Milepost 127 between Mammoth and Dudleyville and lies within the south western boundary of the San Carlos Apache Reservation. This location is just 39 miles north of Catalina, Arizona in the far north suburbs of Tucson and just another 12 miles south to Ina Road and Oracle in north Tucson.

Beautiful Dudleyville area and the San Pedro River Under the 2003 State Gaming Compact, the San Carlos Apache Tribe is allocated two class III gaming facilities. The San Carlos Apache Tribe, in exercising its inherent sovereign rights, has selected the Dudleyville site as the second Class three gaming facility. The Tribe is planning on opening a temporary facility in 2014 that will house up to 400 slot machines, 10 to 12 table games, including live poker and a small lounge and restaurant. Future plans include building a perma-

The Tribe is excited to put this project back on track after the economic down turn of 2008 forced the postponement of the second casino site. The long term economic benefits for the Tribe and surrounding communities cannot be understated. The San Carlos Apache Tribe looks forward to working with local communities as planning and construction move ahead. The anticipated opening of the temporary casino is currently scheduled for the first half of 2014. The construction of a larger permanent facility will follow soon after the opening of the temporary facility. The Tribe will be holding community meetings prior to construction to better communicate the plan and long term growth opportunities for the region that this facility will bring.

TJ’s Blackjack corner

golden nugget $ 20,000 tournament

ust recently on January 18-20 the by TJ Jorgensen Golden Nugget in Laughlin Nevada hosted their “$20,000 Big Game” Blackjack Tournament. I played three of their tournaments last year and can tell you that Janette Hallmark and her staff put on a very well organized and smooth running event. The entry fee was $50 for a chance at the $10,000.00 first place grand prize. The prize pool totaled $20,000.00, and paid through 20th place. Additionally they had four $250.00 Bonus cash drawings for everyone who entered, and I was one of the lucky ones whose name was drawn. (yeah) This tournament had 158 players sign up to play and offered re-buys for those who didn’t qualify in the first round. The tournament had five tables of six players each in Saturdays qualifying rounds. Each player started with $500 in play chips and at the end of twenty hands the person with the most chips advanced to Sundays quarter finals. The players who didn’t win their table could re-buy for another chance. If they failed to advance in the re-buy round they would be eligible for the wild card drawings. The Re-buy rounds were held Saturday afternoon. On Sunday there were four quarter final rounds and prior to each round there was a wild card drawing held from the pool of players who failed to advance from the re-buy rounds.

18 ARIZONA PLAYER February 2013

Depending on how many spots were available determined the number of wild cards drawn. I can tell you that they drew at least six or more wild cards prior to the start of each quarter final round, so even if you didn’t make it through the first round you had a good opportunity to get back in the tournament.

In the quarter finals they again operated five tables of six players each, and all players started with $500 in play chips. This time at the end of twenty hands the top two players with the most chips advanced to Sundays Semi-finals. In that round there were five tables of six players each all starting again with $500 in play chips. After 20 hands only the player with the most chips would advance to the final. As with the quarter finals they again drew wild cards for the semi- final from all of the players who were in the quarter finals and played in the re-buy rounds but failed to advance.

For the Final Played on Sunday they drew one wild card to join the other five players competing for the $10,000.00 grand prize. In the Final again all players started with $500 in play chips, however this time after 30 hands the player with the most chips would be crowned champion and take home the top prize. The prize structure was 1st place $10,000, 2nd place $3000, 3rd place $2000, 4th place $1500, 5th place $1000, 6th place $500, 7th place $250, 8th and 9th place $100 and 10th through 20th $50 each. This is a very fun event to play with a lot of opportunities to get some prize money. The next couple tournaments are scheduled for March 15-17, and April 19-21 at the Golden Nugget Laughlin. It’s a very inexpensive weekend with an opportunity to make some big money without a lot of out of pocket cost. I hope I see you there for the next tournament. Until next month... money won is twice as sweet as money earned. T.J. Jorgensen has been a professional Blackjack player for over 20 years. He is well known for his live tournament play. lottery news Lottery Reports Record Mid-Year Results On January 29, the Arizona Lottery announced its mid-year results with sales pacing a record-breaking 10.7 percent over fiscal year 2012 and currently totaling more than $325.3 million. The exceptional year-to-date Arizona Lottery sales are due to a significant 6.4 percent increase in the sale of Scratchers℠ tickets and an even larger 18.5 percent increase in the sale of draw game tickets. “The incredible Powerball® jackpot run earlier this fiscal year resulted in a huge increase in Powerball ticket sales statewide and produced an Arizona winner of the record-breaking $587.5 million jackpot,” said Jeff Hatch-Miller, executive director of the Arizona Lottery. “This surge in Powerball sales heavily contributed to our strong mid-year sales figures.” As a result of strong Lottery sales, the State of Arizona has received more than $72.5 million in net proceeds year-to-date. Arizona Lottery dollars are allocated to fund a wide variety of public projects and programs throughout Arizona that fall under four main pillars: education, health & public welfare, economic & business development and the environment. In addition to the Arizona Lottery’s transfers to the State this year, more than $200 million has been paid out to players in the form of prizes, not including the additional $293.8 million that was paid to Arizona’s Powerball jackpot winner.

20 ARIZONA PLAYER February 2013

Lottery retailers large and small also have benefited from the record Lottery sales, earning more than $21.4 million in commissions year-to-date, which many of them rely upon to support their businesses. “This has already been a remarkable year for the Arizona Lottery, which can be largely credited to the introduction of new, innovative products that continue to attract players and deliver sound results for Arizona Lottery beneficiaries throughout the state,” Hatch-Miller said. “We are confident that our strong sales trend will continue through the end of the year, as we work aggressively toward exceeding 2013 goals.” Players must be 21 years or older to purchase or redeem tickets. Overall odds vary by game. In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, these materials may be made available in an alternate format. Gambling problem? Proceeds from sales of Lottery tickets - over $3 million per week - fund a variety of state programs. Since July 1981, the Arizona Lottery has paid out more than $5 billion in prizes to players, over $2.8 billion in net profit to the state and almost $591 million in commissions to retailers.

SURPRISE! You won $250,000 Tricia and Glen Edwards of Surprise received a belated end-ofthe year present from the Mega Millions® drawing of December 28, 2012. The happy couple won the second place prize of $250,000 with one of their two Quick Picks. While his wife dozed in their car in the Fry’s parking lot, Glen took their two tickets into the store to have them scanned. When the clerk scanned them, the terminal printed out the paperwork required to redeem the ticket. He asked the clerk if she knew what he’d won, but all she knew was that it was more than the store could pay. He hoped that it was $50,000 or even $10,000. A woman standing next to him in line who didn’t know him and had never seen the ticket, told him that he’d won $250,000. She repeated it again, and when he turned to leave the store, he looked back and she was gone. When he went to the car, he woke up Tricia and waved the ticket in front of her face telling her that they’d won $250,000. Her initial comment was, “Don’t toy with me!” After she realized he was serious, she checked the numbers using her cell phone and then they went home to decide what they were going to do. They were laughing and shouting with excitement. They talked about the unknown woman from the store, and until they find out differently, they’re calling her their guardian angel. The couple talked to their financial advisor at the bank, and plan to use some of their winnings to purchase a home. The balance will be put away for the future. The winning ticket was purchased from the Fry’s Food Store located at 15510 W. Bell Rd., Surprise.

Morsels found on the road MORSELS FOUND ON THE ROAD By David Ramsey

Editor’s note: I hope you enjoy the return of this really fun food column I started over 10 years ago. Last month we reviewed my favorite east valley breakfast restaurant – This month we head to the west side. This column was inspired by all the places I traveled to around the state while visiting Arizona Indian Casinos. The concept was to find restaurants in out-of-the-way places where locals in that area loved to frequent. Then, when Arizona Player readers were traveling, they could stop, check out the restaurant and enjoy a great meal. Since then, many readers have asked why we don’t run it more often, so, from now on- we’ll do just that, and either I will write the column or it will be written by a guest columnist, as is the case with this review. Before we get to David’s review, here’s a little history about Roger Hagadorn and how he developed a “taste” for the restaurant business.Back when Roger was about 6 years old - way before newspapers and magazines, (Just kidding) his dad delivered bread and bakery goods to local restaurants every morning in rural Michigan. One very special morning when his dad arrived at one particular location at the end of his route, the owner was having a horrible day. He delivered the bread and waited to be paid in cash. (a tradition back then) The owner grumbled as he pulled the money out of a drawer and said “It’s time I sold this place and got out of this business.” Roger’s dad then asked “Just how much do you want for it?”The owner thought for a moment and said in a disgusted tone “The first person who

walks thru that door and offers me $300 can have this place!” To which Roger’s dad checked his pockets for all the cash he had collected that morning and said “You’ve got a deal!” The owner wrote up a bill of sale on some butcher paper – and he was now the proud owner of his first restaurant, to the shock of his wife. Young Roger spent after school at the restaurant in the back typing the daily specials on an old typewriter. He never knew whether his mom used those daily special menus or if she just had him do it as a ploy to keep him out of mischief. So that’s how Roger Hagadorn got started in the restaurant business. Now, here’s guest columnist David Ramsey with his review of Kiss the Cook, one of his favorite restaurants.

Kiss the Cook has been a Glendale favorite for over 30 years, serving mouth-watering dishes in an eclectic atmosphere. The first thing you notice when you walk in are the antiques everywhere. Then you notice how busy it is. The friendly service here is a delightful surprise, as the staff hustles to fill every order and makes you feel special. The basket of delicious small muffins that accompanies every breakfast is a family recipe handed down by Roger’s mother. An average of 1,000 are baked and served every day. Hershey kisses also come with the check after every meal – which explains why the Hershey Kiss-Mobile visited back in May of 2007 to celebrate Kiss the Cook’s milestone 25thbirthday. The Kiss-Mobile gave out chocolate treats and sold promotional items with all proceeds going to the Phoenix Children’s Hospital. This was one of the final stops for the Kiss-Mobile as it is now retired and on display in Hershey, Pennsylvania in Hershey’s Chocolate Museum.

Morsels found on the road But fear not – Mom and Dad are still regular fixtures at the restaurant helping out, serving, bussing tables, greeting customers and decorating the restaurant as they were earlier this month in preparation for the Valentine’s Dinner on Thursday February 14th.

Kiss the Cook is only open for breakfast and lunch, so make sure you get there early. The restaurant is only open in the evening two or three times a year, including a special Valentine’s Day dinner - make your reservations in advance because it sells out fast. The breakfast menu has everything from Homemade Biscuits and Gravy to a Snow Peas and Mushroom Omelet to Huevos Rancheros to a seafood omelet that folk’s travel many miles across the valley to enjoy. And don’t forget the light and creamy pancakes that were featured in Bon Appetit Magazine a few years ago! Lunch features sandwiches that are almost too large to eat in one sitting, freshly-made salads and homemade soups. And if it’s not on the menu, they’ll make if for you. Recently, I decided to break from my traditional Eggs Benedict (a taste sensation) and asked for a club sandwich - It’s not on the menu but our waitress, said no problem and brought out the best club sandwich I’ve had in years. Kiss the Cook is a family affair. Founders Roger and Carol Hagadorn leased the building back in 1972 with the dream of owning a restaurant. Roger, was a local banker back then and along his wife Carol opened Kiss the Cook. Their son Roger Jr. and his wife Asta Jean managed the place for about 3 years until they left to open another restaurant. At which point, Roger and Carol’s daughter Nancy Hagadorn Wallace returned from Pinetop to run the restaurant with parents. This great partnership continued for many years until just recently when Nancy purchased the business from her parents and is now the owner.

Carol, Roger, Nancy, David Nancy’s philosophy is to take care of their customers – they are special. She explains “If people come in here and don’t have a smile on their face – then it’s our job to put one there.” At Kiss the Cook – They know their customers, their names when they arrive, their favorite food orders even where they like to sit. Our editor Phil Scudella several years ago took a friend he has known for over 40 years (the ex-wife of his first radio newsman) she was visiting from Denver and brought her mom who had just flown in from Tampa. They had breakfast at Kiss the Cook and after eating the seafood omelet the 80ish mom demanded to see the chef and proceeded to live up to the name of the restaurant, and planted a big wet one on him for making the best seafood omelet she had ever eaten! When traveling through the Phoenix area, be sure to stop by Kiss the Cook – Your taste buds will thank you. Kiss the Cook Restaurant and Antiques is located at 4915 West Glendale Ave in Glendale. 623.939.4663

Professional Gambler Wins Again

During an IRS audit, the auditor looked at the tax payer and exclaimed... “Well, sir, you have an extravagant lifestyle and no full-time employment, which you explain by saying that you win money gambling. I’m not sure the IRS finds that believable.” “I’m a great gambler, and I can prove it,” says Ralph. “Would you like a demonstration?” The auditor thinks for a moment and said, “Okay. Go ahead.” Ralph says, “I’ll bet you a thousand dollars that I can bite my own eye.” The auditor thinks a moment and says, “No way! It’s a bet.” Ralph removes his glass eye and bites it. The auditor’s jaw drops. Ralph says, “Now, I’ll bet you two thousand dollars that I can bite my other eye.” The auditor can tell Ralph isn’t blind, so he takes the bet. Ralph removes his dentures and bites his good eye. The stunned auditor now realizes he has wagered

and lost three grand, with Ralph’s attorney as a witness. He starts to get nervous. “Want to go double or nothing?” Ralph asks. “I’ll bet you six thousand dollars that I can stand on one side of your desk, and pee into that wastebasket on the other side, and never get a drop anywhere in between.” The auditor, twice burned, is cautious now, but he looks carefully and decides there’s no way this guy can manage that stunt, so he agrees again. Ralph stands beside the desk and unzips his pants, and urinates all over the desk. The auditor leaps with joy, realizing that he has just turned a major loss into a huge win. But Ralph’s attorney moans and puts his head in his hands. “Are you okay?” the auditor asks. “Not really,” says the attorney. “This morning, when Ralph told me he’d been summoned for an audit, he bet me twenty thousand dollars that he could come in here and pee all over your desk and that you’d be happy about it.”

A Different Approach Might Work Jerry and Lee were playing poker and drinking till about 3am, when they decided to take their losses and head home. As they headed for their cars, Lee turned to Jerry and said “The thing I hate most about this is the tongue lashing I’ll get from the wife about staying out late, drinking and losing money. When I get to the house, I turn off my headlights and engine, and coast into the driveway. Then I take off my shoes and slowly open and close the door and sneak in quietly. But my wife always wakes up and we end up having a fight. Jerry shook his head, smiled and said “Lee, you’re taking the wrong approach - What I do instead is squeal into the driveway, honk the horn, slam the car door, go in the house and slam the front door.” Lee was confused, as Jerry continued, then I yell “Honey, I’m home,” head to the bedroom - slap her on her bottom and say, “How about a little lovin, woman?” She never stirs or even says a word.

CASINO REVIEW - Casino del Sol One place comes to mind when walking into Tucson’s Casino del Sol…Las Vegas! Casino del Sol chose to set itself apart from the other Arizona casinos by really making you feel like you are on a vacation outside of the state. When you first walk into the casino, you realize how open everything is. Slot machine banks have an unusual amount of space between them and table games have their own section in the middle of the casino. Add to this that the casino is separated into multiple rooms that are connected by Vegas-like walkways lined with shops and restaurants. The slot machine selection is quite good and offers the newest games from all the major gaming manufacturers. As far as table games are concerned, it was nice to get away from the $10 minimum games that the vast majority of casinos everywhere seem to be stuck on. Casipo del Sol also has a comfortablelooking poker room that hosts many tournaments and leagues. Bingo is also offered and is quite popular with a large group of regulars. The hotel at Casino del Sol is yet another aspect that sets it apart from the majority of casinos not only in Arizona, but Las Vegas as well. Hotel registration and the elevators are nicely separated from the casino, meaning you don’t have to walk through gaming areas with your luggage to check-in to or get to your room. If you have the opportunity, definitely try to book a room on the Sky View level. This level offers amazing views, VIP park-

32 ARIZONA PLAYER February 2013

ing, preferred restaurant reservations, turndown service, and much more. Each room in the resort is equipped with a new 42” flat screen HDTV. One of my favorite aspects of these rooms, and it may seem trivial, is that each room has a Keurig selfbrewing coffee/tea system –making it much easier to quickly brew a cup of coffee in the morning. The rooms were very nice and it is obvious that there was a great deal of attention to detail that went into designing and decorating everything. If you’re a food lover, Casino del Sol has you very well-covered. With six different restaurants, Casino del Sol has something for everyone. The main draw of the resort is the PY Steakhouse. It offers only the best cuts of meat and some amazing seafood selections as well as a very expansive wine list. If sushi or Asian food is what you’re looking for then you definitely need to check out An del Sol. Creative and innovative Japanese food is served at the sushi bar, while more contemporary Chinese cuisine is served in the main dining room. Casino del Sol offers a couple of options for lovers of Mexican food. The Tequila Factory is a very authentic old-school Mexican restaurant, while Abuelitas Taqueria is great if you are just looking for a quick bite. If you are a burger and fries type of person, Moby’s is the place for you – This 1960’s beachthemed diner will transport you back into the days when malt shops ruled the streets. A casino resort would not be complete without a buffet. The Fiesta International Buffet more than fills the bill. While smaller in size than many buffets, it makes up for it

by offering some terrific selections. There is also a deli located in the bingo hall as well as a couple of Starbucks scattered throughout the casino. I did not have a chance to enjoy the pool. However, it is set up very nicely with lounge chairs and cabanas surrounding the entire pool area. Sky View guests receive preferred access to the cabanas which is yet another reason to book a Sky View room. Slated to open this year is the Sewailo Golf Course. I caught a great glimpse of this displayed near the elevator bank and it looks absolutely gorgeous. The course was designed by Notah Begay III and will also feature the Jack Nicklaus Academy of Golf. It has been announced that Troon Golf will manage the course, which means that it is sure to be one of Tucson’s finest. Whether you want to enjoy a long weekend or just take a day trip, Casino del Sol must be considered as one of your getaway destinations. The great gaming selection combined with the amazing new resort truly makes it a wonderful place to escape to. Casino del Sol is located 5 miles west of I-19 on Valencia Road in Tucson, Arizona. DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR Warm Bodies -

After a zombie epidemic sweeps the planet there is only a small hand full of humans living inside an area protected by a huge wall. Their leader sends out a scouting party that includes his daughter, Julie, to get much needed medical supplies from the pharmacies in the nearest city. by At the local airport a young male David Ramsey zombie who can only remember that his name started with an R wanders aimlessly among many others of his kind. He is hungry and decides to lead a group to the city looking for food. The two groups encounter each other leading to a deadly battle. In the middle of eating R sees Julie and something is rekindled in him and he protects her from the others. This leads to a most unusual romance between a human and a zombie. As R and his friends become more human Julie has to convince her father there are good zombies. They are all in danger from the killer “bonies” deadly skeletal creatures. Warm Bodies is a perfect blend of action, romance and comedy, making it a delightful film.

Beautiful Creatures Ethan enters his senior year in high school longing to get out of his small Southern town. Then he meets the new girl in town, Lena, who lives with her Uncle Macon at the mysterious Ravenwood estate. Trouble seems to follow Lena as something strange always happens when she comes to a new school. The girls shun and make fun of her and after an incident at school the parents want her expelled. Everyone but Ethan believes the rumors that Lena and her family are witches. (They prefer the term ‘casters’ saying calling one of them a “witch” is like calling an athlete a “jock.”) It’s not long before Ethan discovers Lena’s secret, not only is she a caster, on her upcoming 16th birthday she could become a dark caster because of a family curse. He mother and cousin come to town to claim her for the dark but with the help of Uncle Macon, she fights to stay with the light. Ethan has to help her break the curse but the cost may be too high. This is not “Twilight” with witches. “Beautiful Creatures” is a surprising good film with a very good cast and a well written script. 34 ARIZONA PLAYER February 2013

As the American Embassy in Tehran was being overrun six Americans managed to get out through a back door and find refuge at the home of the Canadian Ambassador. While the world watched the hostage crisis in the embassy play out those six hid in fear. After a few months the United States government decides they had to get them out because the revolutionaries will soon be onto them. They turn to a CIA extraction expert who comes up with a bizarre plot to get them out. Based on a true story taken from declassified documents “Argo” is a tense hold your breath thriller that not only could happen - it did. The cast is brilliant, the script is crisp and the direction is masterful. “Argo” is a must see.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower Charlie starts his freshman year at high school as an introverted, lonely outsider struggling with the suicide of his best friend and his own mental issues but two seniors, Sam and her step-brother Patrick, take him under their wing. They are unique but popular and introduce him to life and the real world. This is more than a coming-of-age story, Stephen Chbosky adapted and directed his novel into a funny and touching film. The cast is brilliant. “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” is one of the best films of the year.

It turns out that the villain, Silva, is from M’s past and he wants her dead. Meanwhile, M is being blamed for the loss of the disk and may be forced to retire.
