A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER

The N ew N ormal

his year’s Global Gaming Expo, G2E was once more held in Las Vegas in early October. It’s no by longer held at the Las Linda Boyd Vegas Convention center, but has moved to the nearby Sands Convention center inside the Venetian Hotel - However, much more than the venue has changed from years gone by. The entire philosophy of gaming, especially for video poker (VP) players has shifted into the “new normal”. That’s Entertainment: In the past you could find some good VP plays both in Nevada and local casinos. You’ll still find some good deals but you’ll have to look harder and do your homework. That means use the tables in my book, “The Video Poker Edge” to find games with an ER close to 100%, or even more when you factor in slot club points, comps, promo entries and other perks. Nowadays, however, you’ll have to work harder and they’ll be fewer in number. In fact, you can’t worry about high variance games, like a large progressive royal in 8/5 Jacks or Better (8/5 JOB). That’s because the philosophy of gaming brass is you’re there for entertainment purposes only and if you win in the short run they’ll get you next time. You can’t blame them since our taxing entities, both locally and federally, are reaching deeper into the pockets of the gaming industry with no end in sight. Still, you’ll find some good plays if you’re willing to do the work and to settle for a razor’s edge.

12 ARIZONA PLAYER March 2013

Server-Based: Casinos have had the option of changing both games and pay schedules from a remote position off the gaming floor for several years now. The reason it’s just trickling into local casinos is the expense if the gaming floor is not wired for the technology at the time the casino is built. Management realizes that making adjustments during times with peak crowds will bring in much revenue. That’s why you should look at the games along with the pay schedules before depositing money. If you see a difference, say shorted pay tables during weekends or celebratory holidays, like New Year’s Eve, the choose slower times. Right now it’s probably not a problem but it may be in the near future. Good Vibrations: Many VP player switch to slots when there’s seemingly a dark cloud over their heads at video poker. You’ll find some of the newer devices, like Ghost Busters, actually do vibrate when you catch the bonus round. The same kind of psychological endorphins will be found in newer VP devices. Maybe not actual vibrations like the slots, but some comfort zone features. For example, IGT (International Gaming Technology) has had a lock on non-VLT (video lottery terminals, which may or may not have random number generators and are thankfully not allowed in NJ, Arizona or Nevada) video poker for years. The WMS representatives at this year’s G2E informed me that they are going to make a run for a part of the VP market. They’ll offer the core games (analyzed in my book) that are most-popular with players, but due to copyright laws, under a slightly different name. In addition,

they’ll have some comfort features not offered by IGT. For example, you’ll be able to personalize the color, size, layout and card-art before playing. In fact, you’ll be able to save your settings for the next time you play by entering your own ID number. (You can already enter ID numbers for some games, like Star Trek, so that you can advance to higher level games and retain that status for future games in any casino.) Be aware that the version of the game offered, say JOB, is entirely up to casino management, although they must be within jurisdiction max/min ER requirements. If you are in Vegas and want to try these devices they are exclusively at Station Casinos, but will eventually be found in local casinos. K aleidoscope Comps: It’s hard to keep up with the latest trends regarding comps and promos. Lately, I’ve noticed a growing number of VIP rooms in local casinos, a good thing for frequent players. It’s nice to be able to get bottled water and light healthy snacks without having to ask a host for a meal comp; it’s faster for one thing. Stay tuned, however, because this policy could change yet again. Final Thoughts: The new normal is evolving rather than manifesting itself in revolutionary changes, like from coin-droppers to TITO (ticketin, ticket-out) devices. In the long run technological changes are good for players and knowing about them will make gambling more fun and profitable. Linda Boyd, long-time table game player before turning to video poker, also writes for Southern Gaming and Midwest Gaming and Travel. Her book, “The Video Poker Edge” includes free removable pay schedules and free strategy cards for the most popular games. Look for her story in the 2012 Edition of “American Casino Guide” and her You Tube video. The 2010 Second Edition of her book is available in both paperback and kindle.Available at amazon.com, bookstores or Square One Publishers- 1-877-900-BOOK www.squareonepublishers.com

HORSIN’ AROUND

Derby Picture Coming Into Focus

he Grade 2 $350,000 Tampa Bay Derby was showcased recent in Florida while Californians squared off in the $300,000 San Felipe and both were run at a mile and a sixteenth. by The “Bridge to Nowhere” was a proposed projBrian Mulligan ect in Alaska that would have cost $398 million and was never constructed but Verrazano just punched his ticket to a bridge to everywhere by taking the Tampa Bay Derby and fans have a legit Kentucky Derby contender to follow. The unbeaten son of More Than Ready trained by Todd Pletcher got an ideal 2-hole trip on Saturday March 9th. He sat right off a :23.50 quarter early, opened up 3 and a half lengths at the top of the lane and held off a closing Java’s War to win by 3 in 1:43.96 with something in reserve. He earned a 101 Beyer Speed Figure and the final time stands up okay to last year’s winner Prospective, who was time in 1:43.35. When Street Sense won this race on his way to taking the Kentucky Derby, he was time in 1:43.11. His trainer was happy with the race, Pletcher: “It was a good performance. He is a lot like his sire; he has a great disposition and a great mind. You always worry about the variables—his first time shipping to a new place, the first time around two turns, the first time in a stakes. So we had a lot of variables he hadn’t seen before and he seemed to handle them real well”. “The way he has finished his mile and mile and a sixteenth races, I don’t see another sixteenth being much of an issue. To come here and get 50 Kentucky Derby points, everyone can take a deep breath and see what happens next. He has had some freakishly good performances and some of the things he does in the morning training, we don’t see too often.” Verrazano’s connections now have options for the next start. They could stay in Florida for the Florida Derby at Gulfstream, ship to New York for the Wood Memorial or head to Oaklawn’s Arkansas Derby. It’s nice to run the option play. Out West, Flashback was upset by Hear the Ghost in the San Felipe Stakes. Scary good in his debut at 16-1, the Ghost looks like the real deal but he oPoker_1/3page_vp ad.qxp 12:31 Page 1 the issue kind of got a set up as there 10/12/09 was a sprinter in thePM field that forced from the get-go.

Photo courtesy of Cheryl Ann Quigley

That runner made Goldencents and Flashback go head-to-head for most of the race setting up a close by the Ghost, who got up by a half-length and earned a 93 Beyer. Hear the Ghost’s sire proved stamina winning the BC Classic, his dam’s lone win was a sprint but she dropped the successful router Settle for Medal. His dam also dropped Grade 1 Spinaway winner and over $250,000 earner Mani Bhavan. The Ghost will likely try the Santa Anita Derby next on April 6 as will Flashback. Last year was resurgence for the Santa Anita Derby so don’t discount this prep. Stars like Affirmed, Majestic Prince, Winning Colors, Silver Charm and Sunday Silence came out of the SA Derby to win the Kentucky Derby. In mid-march it’s the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn will be renewed and Southwest Stakes winner Super Ninety Nine should head it. Delhomme, who proved last year he has a nice future, also should show up for the Rebel. The D. Wayne Lukas charge Oxbow and Robert Lewis Stakes second Den’s Legacy will also likely be in the gate for the Rebel. The Florida Derby should also be a dandy. The Fountain of Youth winner Orb, last year’s champion Shanghai Bobby, and the Holy Bull winner Itsmyluckyday will have their backers in this Gulfstream fixture the end of March. The thing that makes the Kentucky Derby a puzzle is that these horses will be trying to go a furlong further than they ever had in their career. You don’t want a horse to peak at 2 if you want to win the Derby. You don’t want him to peak in March either. You want him just to be scratching the surface of his talent in Louisville while leaving enough in the tank to continue on the trail. For nearly two decades Brian Mulligan was the main West Coast linemaker for the Daily Racing Form writing under the non de plume of “SWEEP.” He continues to contribute to the Daily Racing Form writing “A Closer Look” analysis daily.

At the end of 21 hands the player with the most chips will advance to the semi-final. If you fail to qualify there may be an opportunity to re-buy depending on how many players enter. In the semi-final, the 25 remaining players will again seat five to a table and be given $1000 in chips with betting limits from $10 to $500. At the end of 21 hands, only the player with the most chips at each table will advance to the Championship round. The Championship round will consist of the remaining five players, all competing for their share of the prize money. Players will again start with $1000 in play chips, betting limits from $10 to $500. At the end of 21 hands, the player with the most chips will be determined the winner and receive first place prize money of $6,600, 2nd through 5th will be awarded prize money based on the number of entries. lottery news HAPPY HOLIDAYS - HARRIET FIND TREASURE!

$50,000 Lottery winner sees benefits!

Trip home included Lottery win!

Harriet MunguiaLugo of Chandler considers herself a “hit or miss” player of Scratchers - except during the holiday season. During this festive time of the year she plays whatever game strikes her fancy, with no particular price point. So, when she was in the store during the holidays, the Holiday Treasures Scratchers caught her eye and she purchased one. Harriet scratched the ticket at home and did a double-take when she saw the winning prize amount of $100,000 on her ticket. She checked her winning ticket a few more times just to be sure she hadn’t made a mistake and immediately signed the back of the ticket, but did not take it to a store to be scanned. Since it was such a busy time of the year for her, she waited until she had time to come to the Phoenix Lottery office to redeem it. Harriet is a licensed optician, owns her own business, and thoroughly enjoys meeting new people. Since most of her time is spent with her business, she didn’t hesitate to say, “The business is my life.” She also enjoys spending time with her grown children and grandchildren - that is another part of her life. With regard to her winnings, Harriet will most likely invest it in real estate. The winning ticket was purchased from the Albertsons located on south Alma School Road in Chandler.

Jesus Sesma of Phoenix enjoys playing the Arizona Lottery’s Bingo Boxes Scratchers, and he’s had good luck with it, usually getting a return on his investment. He always buys from two particular stores and plans how much he is going to spend. He recently purchased four Bingo Boxes. He took the tickets home to scratch, and the second ticket made him a top prize winner of $50,000. However, like most people, Jesus checked the ticket about five times to be sure it really did show a $50,000 top prize. When he told his wife the good news, she had a difficult time believing it, because she’d always thought those kinds of wins always happened to everyone else. Jesus plans to use some of his winnings for some dental work and new glasses. The rest will be put into savings. The winning ticket was purchased from Food City located at 845 W. Southern Ave., Phoenix.

Robert Knisely of Fort Mohave has been home on leave from his position as a civilian air traffic controller in Afghanistan. He’ll return there soon during this month of March – But because he enjoys playing Arizona Lottery Scratchers he will return a much richer man. Here’s what made his trip home so sweet. Recently, Robert and his brother were in their local Safeway store and passed by the Arizona Lottery’s instant ticket vending machine. His brother pointed to one of his favorite games, but Robert decided he liked the look of Black Pearls and bought two. He took them home to scratch and was sure he’d made a mistake when, after scratching them, one of the tickets showed him to be a winner of $50,000. He asked his brother to check it. The first thing his brother did was turn the ticket over to be sure it was real, checked it thoroughly, and they both went into shock. Knisely took the ticket back to the store to have it validated. When the clerk handed him the paperwork, he knew he really was a winner. He plans to pay off all of his bills before returning to Afghanistan and put the rest of it away for the future. The winning ticket was purchased at the Safeway on Highway 95 in Fort Mohave.

reel reviews by kevin cummings The Arizona Player had the opportunity to interview the Games’ Producer, Brian Robertson. Below you will find the answers to the questions about working on the game and the features inside the game.

First Question about PvZ; When you were given the project, did you soil your plants? Very much so. Everyday and twice on Sunday. See answer below. I was already a fan of the game.

Had you played Plants Vs. Zombies™ before? Yes. About 4 months or so prior to hearing about the opportunity for the PopCap® license a fellow designer told me about the game and said “you need to play this”. Which then lead to a lot of lunch hours playing PvZ on PC and then a lot of time spent playing the IOS version (on Apple iPhone).

When concepting, what unique features did you add or develop for the game? Originally when playing the game the idea for the Gargantuar bonus came up for moving him across the screen and creating 2 reels wild at the same time. He’s just so large and in charge and I thought he was awesome. In the PopCap game they have mini games that you can play and one of them that I play fairly often is Vase Breaker. I used the vase and lantern combination from the game and made a risk vs. reward style bonus where you could play it safe with winnings or you could risk and go for a high multiplier. Since there are so many characters to choose from in the game we chose the 3 most logical to add random wilds to a game. Balloon, Pogo, and Bungee zombies were the quickest to get this done and not delay the game as most zombies, as we know, are super slow. With the Plants vs Zombies game the biggest challenge was getting the feel of the Versus portion into the game. I think we achieved it on 2 fronts. First with the main game feature of zombies randomly popping out of the Tombstone Royal symbols and the plants who have the ability will destroy the zombies. Secondly the Graveyard progressive bonus allows for the excitement of winning progressives with the tension of not allowing the zombie to get to your house and eating your brains. It’s a race to collect suns before the zombie reaches your house.

Is there any advice you can give to the player with Plants Vs. Zombies? They might be cute but don’t let the zombies eat your brains.

What is your favorite plant? And favorite Zombie? I’m a big fan of the Squash Plant mainly for his little eyebrow raise when a zombie gets near him and then his jump to pulverize them. It just makes me laugh, which I like. As much as I like Gargantuar, I love the little Imp Zombie that is carried on his back. He’s just so cute and cuddly. But he’s a zombie so you can’t do that.

From storyboarding to arrival at The Global Gaming Expo, how long did it take to make the Plants Vs. Zombies slot? The initial concepts were fall 2010 / G2E time frame. In early 2011 we brought multiple concepts (sketches/ presentation) to player focus groups and from that we created a working prototype of PvZ Gargantuar which was viewable in a back room at G2E 2011. Immediately following G2E we brought the prototype to another player focus group to get gameplay feedback. From that point on it was fine tuning of the game which we showcased at G2E 2012 along with Plants vs. Zombies™ Backyard Showdown, Zuma®, and Bejeweled®.

Movies, DVDs and Video games are known for Easter Eggs (hidden items or animations); Is there any special item or animation hidden into the game? Keep an eye out for a few special guest zombie appearances by the Dancing Zombie, Football Zombie, and Zombie Yeti.

A few questions about yourself - How Long have you been a game designer (Producer) at Spielo? I’ve been at SPIELO International for 10 years with just over 5 years being in Game Producer role.

How did you get into the gaming industry? Not long after university I started working for SPIELO International. So this was my introduction into the gaming industry. I’ve been playing games for years especially with casual games on IOS/mobile phone.

What other games have you made for Spielo? Starting off in the Game Design role I worked on bringing popular games to newer platforms/cabinets and markets to gain experience. From there some of my games have been Arctic Spirit, Valley of the Scarab, Guinevere, Club Cabaret, Valley of the Kings, Captain’s Key, Rickety Cricket, and the new version of SPIELO International’s Greatest Game in the West.

Looking into the games mechanics, how often can a player expect those wacky and crazy random If you had to pick your favorite slot machine title to play (from any manufacture) wilds? which one would you pick? The random wilds and zombies popping out of the tombstones are a super frequent event that will keep the players entertained.

How often does the Free Spin Bonus Occur? The game has 3 different bonus rounds with the Gargantuar and Progressive being pushed out (or less frequent), and the Vase Breaker is more frequent. The Gargantuar has guaranteed wins which allows the player to reap the rewards.

Games that make you soil your plants. Duh….. PvZ. In general I try to play as many games as I can from all competitors to keep up to date with what players are attracted to and, just as important, what they don’t like. Thank you to Brian Robertson and Danielle Pieroni From SPIELO International™ for helping with this Reel Review article.

Joke page HONEY, I’m Home Randy caught an early evening flight back home a day early from a business trip and as he was heading to his car, called home to surprise his wife. The phone rang about ten times, then a sweet young voice answered, “hello, who is this?” It’s your daddy sweetie…where’s mommy?” “She’s upstairs in the bedroom with Uncle Kenny, daddy” the girl replied. “UNCLE KENNY! – Who’s Uncle Kenny?” he yelled “I don’t know daddy” she said “he visits sometimes when you’re gone” “WELL, Young lady” Randy replied “I want you to march right upstairs, open that door and tell your mommy and Uncle Kenny that I’ll be there in 5 minutes!” Randy waited on the phone as he heard loud noises and a scream. “Hello Daddy” said the girl. Randy asked “What’s happening?” “Well” the young girl explained, “the bang and, 'Dammit!'…was when mommy grabbed the sheet off the bed, wrapped it around her, then tripped and hit her head on the bathroom door…but she’s OK daddy” “What about Uncle Kenny” he asked

Jokes of the Month “Well Daddy…I think he’s hurt…He grabbed his clothes, jumped off the balcony into the pool, but it was dark and he didn’t know you had it drained to fix it. He’s yelling that he thinks he broke a leg!” Randy paused then said, balcony?...pool? I’m sorry - I dialed the wrong number!

The Reunion Toast Chris and Debbie were at his 25th High School reunion and her first trip back to his old hometown. After dinner, when the dancing began, Debbie noticed an inebriated blond at the next table with about 8 empty shot glasses in front of her, sipping on yet another shot of tequila. She could barely sit up as she downed that drink and ordered another from the waitress. “Do you know that woman?” asked Debbie. Without hesitating Chris answered “I’m afraid I do, she’s my ex-girlfriend, and from what my old friends tell me, she took to drinking after we broke up, and hasn’t been sober since.” “My God” replied Debbie, as she raised her

glass in the air “Who would have thought a person could celebrate for that long!”

The Apology Text

DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR

Oz the Great and Powerful

A charming carnival magician and con man named Oz escapes an angry husband in a hot air balloon but runs right into a giant tornado. After coming out of the tornado he crashes in a strange enchanted land where he is met by a beautiful young woman who believes he is the great wizard come to fulfill the prophecy. This prequel to the by classic “Wizard of Oz” starts in Kansas in black and white going color and David Ramsey widescreen once in Oz just like the original. James Franco is perfect as Oz, and the rest of the cast is delightful. Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz are witch sisters who are protecting the kingdom from the wicked witch, Michelle Williams, until the wizard arrives to save the land. Convinced Oz is the prophesized wizard they convince him to find and kill the wicked witch. He is joined on his quest by a pair of unlikely companions, a flying monkey and a little china doll. The film is beautiful and the 3D is very good. It’s not long before Oz discovers there is more going on than he was told. Oz will have to use all his wits and skills save the kingdom and defeat the wicked witch. Action, humor and a touch of romance combined with breathtaking visuals and astounding effects make “Oz the Great and Wonderful” a perfect prequel to one of the greatest films of all time.

David’s Video Details Les Misérables

The venerated stage musical of Victor Hugo’s classic novel finally comes to the big screen and it is spectacular. Having never seen the stage version I can’t compare it but I was blown away by this film. The cast is very good, Anne Hathaway is unforgettable as Fantine. The story has everything from romance to action to humor as it tells the story of Jean Valjean, a former felon who breaks parole and Javert, the police inspector obsessed with bringing him to justice. Along the way Valjean comforts a dying woman and agrees to help her child. It all culminates in the 1932 June Rebellion in Paris. The characters are vivid, the story engaging and the music unforgettable.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Jack the Giant Slayer Jack and Isabelle both grow up with the same bedtime story even though their lives couldn’t be more different. Jack is the son of a farmer and Isabelle is the land’s princess. The story they both know by heart is about a time long ago when giants fought humans for control the Earth. Everyone thinks it’s a fairly tale until an older Jack accidentally trades his uncles horse for a handful of beans. The next thing he knows a giant beanstalk sprouts taking his home and the princess up to Gargantua, the home of the giants. Jack joins a group of the King’s royal guard on a rescue mission. Things don’t go exactly as planned and aided by the betrayal of one of the king’s advisors the Giants are soon descending to Earth. Nicholas Hoult (About a Boy, Warm Bodies) is the perfect naive hero while Ewan McGregor is the heroic leader of the King’s guard. Stanley Tucci turns in another stellar performance as a despicable traitor and Eleanor Tomlinson is the perfect combination of beauty and rebellion as the princess. The action is intense but there is the right amount of humor and romance in the mix - as a good fairy tale should have. While not for very young children it is perfect for older ones. “Jack the Giant Slayer” is a surprisingly good film with terrific special effects and a great cast.

When a dragon with a lust for gold attacks and captures the dwarf kingdom under Lonely Mountain its inhabitants are spread throughout middle earth. Years later the wizard Gandalf the Grey knocks on the door of Bilbo Baggins to enlist him in an adventure. That evening to his surprise Bilbo’s home hosts a band of dwarves waiting for the dwarf King who will lead them. Along the way they battle Goblins and Trolls, visit the Elf city of Rivendale and Bilbo meets Gollum. This prequel to “The Lord of The Rings” saga sets everything in motion that changes Bilbo, Middle Earth and the Shire forever. “The Hobbit” is a fun film with lots of action.

gaming news AGA is Against PokerStars to Play in U.S. In an unprecedented intervention in a state licensing case, the trade group for the United States casino industry has asked New Jersey regulators to bar a well-known online gambling company based in the British Isles from returning to the U.S. market. In a brief filed Monday with New Jersey’s Casino Control Commission, the American Gaming Association says the panel should reject a petition by PokerStars, a closely held Isle of Man operator of online gambling web sites, for interim authorization to buy a small, real-world casino in Atlantic City. The California Tribal Business Alliance (CTBA), which has been outspoken about their concerns with regard to ensuring the hastily developed laws maintain the integrity of the industry, applauds the action taken by AGA, noting that their brief works to ensure gaming continues to build on the California tribal business foundation of integrity, fairness and success. “With the gaming industry on the verge a major change, it is imperative that strong regulations are needed to ensure the integrity of iGaming,” said CTBA Chairman Robert Smith. “Licensees who have played by the enacted laws and rules of the United States, and maintained their integrity in the face of growing competition, should have a seat at the table.”

“California Tribal Governments believe lowering the standards will bring about issues of reciprocity and interstate gaming. If other states are content to weaken their standards in a desperate attempt to cobble together gaming laws that swing the doors of the industry open to whomever wants to walk in, then we need a barrier between what other States are trying to do and what California Tribal Governments are succeeding at. At the end of the day, given what’s at stake for tribal governments, we need to hold firm and do what we know is right,” Chairman Smith added. AGA’s decision to file the brief follows a frantic legislative scramble at the end of February to develop bills in New Jersey and Nevada so that they could join Delaware in passing laws that allow for intrastate online gaming and the option to do interstate online gaming. While Nevada is starting with iPoker, New Jersey and Delaware are preparing to offer unlimited online gaming. The New Jersey law, signed by Governor Chris Christie last week, would allow PokerStars an opportunity to acquire an Atlantic City casino and have a foothold in the U.S. gaming market.
