gaming news 167,000 Poker Jackpot hit at Wild Horse Pass! “Bad beat” triggers Super 77 progressive payout
A winning a hand of 4 of a kind in Texas Hold ‘em is a pretty sure bet to take down the pot - However, as Craig Emerson discovered, losingwith that hand can be much more rewarding in the over-all scheme of things. The Valley resident took home the largest share of a $167,000 jackpot when his unlikely loss triggered the Super 77 linked progressive jackpot at Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino on that very special Saturday March 23rdthat he will long remember. The Super 77 Jackpot is triggered when a hand of four-of-a-kind featuring sevens or better is beaten by another player at the table with an even better hand! It’s called a “bad beat” because of the incredibly low probability of losing the hand with such unbelievable great cards. But that losing hand turned into the best situation Craig could have ever hoped for. The Super 77 linked progressive jackpot which connects VeeQuiva Casino and Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino was at $167,000 when Craig’s four-of-a-kind Kings was beaten by William Larusso’s4 of a kind Aces and the amazing jackpot was split between the seven players at the table. Craig’s losing Kings brought him the largest part of the bad beat jackpot – his share was a whopping $83, 500. William’s share was $ 41,750. The balance of this amazing jackpot totaled $41,750 and was shared equally by the remaining 5 players at the table that included; Rickey, Leo, Daryl, Jorge and Bul. ave you ever walked into a casino with visions of 9/6 Jacks or Better (9/6 JOB, ER 99.5439%) dancing in your head, only to find they’re MIA? This sort of disappointment by Linda Boyd has become commonplace of late. Instead of dropping a verbal landmine on the nearest uniformed employee, it’s best to take a deep breath and avoid the potential for a circular firing squad. Here are some considerations. We’ve moved: The first thing to do is ask an informed staff member if your favorite machines have been moved to another location. Make sure you have the correct name and machine description. For example, a local casino had a bank of 8/5JOB Progressives in single-line quarters. If you described them that way, however, you would be viewed as a Martian. Instead, ask if they still have the quarter “Digging for Diamonds” and then indicate where they were located. Calm discourse: If they’re truly gone, then keep an eye on their successors to determine if they’re getting any play. If not, ask management if there’s any chance of bringing them back for an encore. Sometimes you’ll be told that they were just worn out and had to be replaced due to lack of parts and so on. Politely let them know the current devices can have any pay schedule management wants. You can then write the pay schedule down accurately and check back. Even if they slow down the progressive meter on 8/5JOB, sort of a compromise with the casino, it’s better than any non-progressive 8/5JOB. If you’re not sure of the exact numbers, then you can copy the pay schedule for 8/5JOB from my book, “The Video Poker Edge”. Possible alternatives: Sometimes you get the “no can do” response. If that happens, then check the casino’s inventory for the next best device. Again, you may have to write down the exact pay table found on the device and use either the tables in my book or WinPoker software to determine the game’s expected return. (This is called the ER and is a percentage figure, assuming computerperfect play. 100% is even money, above 100% the player has an edge, under the house does. If the ER is close to 100% and your play is close to perfect, then you
12 ARIZONA PLAYER April 2013
can factor in cash back for points, promo equity and other perks.) Russian roulette: Plopping down at any video poker device and thinking they’re all pretty much the same, essentially based entirely on luck, is a huge mistake. Here’s why. If you select a 6/5JOB, that’s what replaced the “Digging for Diamonds” in my example, then your ER is 94.9961% with computerperfect play instead of 97.2984% at reset for 8/5JOB. Beyond that, when the progressive royal gets to $2,000 (that’s 8,000 coins and a frequent occurrence on the bank in question) the ER is 99.5917%. You must keep in mind that the higher the ER the longer you’ll play on a given bankroll over time. That translates to more shots at infrequent hands like four-of-a-kind (occurs once every 423 hands in 8/5JOB) or a royal flush (occurs once every 40,170 hands in 8/5JOB). If you toss money into any device on the casino floor it’s just like playing Russian roulette with your gambling bankroll. Final Thoughts: Imagine what’s going to happen when you’re part of a circular firing squad; really, it’s worse than Russian roulette. That’s what will figuratively occur if you let your emotions get the best of you and make a grandstand announcement that you will never darken the doorway of your local casino because they had the temerity to remove your video poker game. It’s true that many VP players stick to one-and-only-one game. If you’d prefer a casino over a movie then you’re going to need a realistic approach to the activity. Take a careful look at the options in your favorite casino, check out the competition and then decide on the best option. Arizona players are going to have to be more flexible in the future, just like those in other jurisdictions. The good news is that with the growing number of casinos we have many alternatives as well as a big tax advantage in that you can fade your loses against winnings on state tax returns. In other words, being a member of a circular firing squad is not only highly overrated, but truly unnecessary! Linda Boyd - long-time table game player before turning to video poker, also writes for “Southern Gaming” and “Midwest Gaming and Travel” her book, “The Video Poker Edge”, includes free removable pay schedules and strategy cards for the most popular games. Look for her story in the 2012 Edition of “American Casino Guide” (ACG) and her You Tube video, also with ACG. The 2010 Second Edition of her book is available in both paperback and kindle. lottery news Player now sold on the lottery!
Craig Krause, who shares his time between Colorado and Arizona, doesn’t usually purchase Lottery tickets. However, on Friday, March 21, he was in his local store and purchased five Powerball tickets for Saturday’s drawing. Early Monday morning, Craig checked his ticket and was excited that on the top line he had three numbers. He knew that there had been one $1,000,000 Powerball winner in Arizona for March 22, and that it wasn’t him. Then he continued checking and, to his amazement, discovered two additional matching numbers. At that point, he yelled to his friend in the next room to come look at his ticket, because he had five matching

Third time a charm! numbers. His friend didn’t really believe him, but came into the room to look. When he also saw five matching numbers, they decided they’d better go to the store and see what the ticket was worth. They did not take the ticket into the store, but instead got a brochure from the counter and found out that five matching numbers were worth $1,000,000. At that point, they were so excited that they barely made it out of the store and into the truck. Craig never did check the other four lines on the ticket. They were going to go right down to the Lottery, but Craig wanted to go back to his house to get their other friend so both of them would be with him when he received his check. Craig, who works in the construction field, has been coming out to Arizona for the last three years. In his spare time, he rides his bicycle, swims, and is learning to golf. While in Arizona, he also enjoys attending baseball spring training. He really hasn’t had time to make any plans for his $1,000,000, but he said, “I’ll probably pay off some bills and share with my family. He also plans to play the Lottery more often now.
Renee Garcia of Mesa stopped to get gas for her car. While she was at the station, she redeemed a Scratchers ticket for $10 and decided to get some more tickets. She wanted two $5 crosswords, but the store was out of them, so she asked for the $3 crossword, but they had just sold out of that one, too. Instead, she purchased one $10 Ultimate Crossword and ended up winning $100,000 on her third choice! After realizing that she might have a winning ticket, Renee took it to her local store to have it scanned. Although the clerk gave her the claim form, she and her husband were still afraid to believe it was real. Renee only plays the crossword Scratchers “They take longer to play” she said “Also, I can play it for a while, put it down and go back to it.” She and her husband plan to buy a new car with the winnings and talk to a financial advisor about investing the rest. The winning ticket was purchased at the Shell Station at Power & Guadalupe in Mesa.
gaming news Exciting news for Arizona Players! By Kevin Cummings Arizona casinos will now be able to place games from a new and upcoming slot manufacturer, Incredible Technologies. While IT may be new to the casino gaming industry, I would be willing to bet that you have seen some of their other games before. If you have ever been to an arcade or sports bar, you’ve probably seen a very popular game called Golden Tee Golf, where players use a track ball to hook, slice, and putt their way to the green. Golden Tee Golf has the distinction of being the most successful coinoperated video game in history. Incredible Technologies also uses this proven track-ball method of gaming with their other hit arcade game Silver Strike Bowling. While you won’t see a trackball on one of their slot machines yet, Incredible Technologies has taken their 28 years of experience in the amusement industry to produce amazing player-focused slot machine games. Many of their games feature unique math models which provide exciting big wins and great game play. Some of my favorite titles include: The Herd, which offers the opportunity of big full-screen wins. Ultra Mega, a classic 8-bit arcade style game which has huge multipliers on both base and free game wins. Chocolate Indulgence, a simply sweet game with stacked symbols and yummy cordial cherries. Their fresh approach to casino gaming and their arcade know-how has made their slot machines popular in over 13 states - with Arizona becoming number 14. Players will soon be able to play the exciting titles which will make their Arizona debut at the opening of the new Twin Arrows Casino just east of Flagstaff, Arizona. Their titles will be available in more Arizona locations shortly after. Please stay tuned for more on Incredible Technologies, as I plan to do a full two-page spread that will really highlight their very sought-after Arizona debut.

The ACE 5 COUNT
ost gamblers at the end of a yearsworth of playing would be happy if by TJ they just broke even. Jorgensen Along the way they would have established enough points for some free comps, and had some low cost entertainment. While this may not sound possible, here’s how to make it happen. If a Blackjack player knows “Basic Strategy” and employs it flawlessly the Casino has about a .52% long term advantage, depending on the rules and number of decks used. This means on average for every $100 wagered you would expect to lose 52 cents in the long run. By learning and utilizing a very simple card counting system you can reduce the house edge even further down to about .08. “The Ace-Five Count” is very easy to master and play. This system recognizes and keeps track of the two most important cards in the deck. For the player the most valuable card is the Ace. Besides being the essential element for a Blackjack, it also enables the player to make hands because its value can be one or eleven. The most important card for the Dealer is the five, because when hitting hands of 12-16, it will give them 17-21. How this system works. As the cards are dealt from a new shoe you assign a value of -1 (minus one) to all Aces, and a value of +1 (plus one) to all 5s. By doing this you will know if there is an imbalance of 5s vs Aces on the up-coming hand. You will increase your bet when you are more likely to get an Ace, and bet the minimum when there is a surplus of 5s. For example if the cards are dealt for the first hand, and there are three 5s dealt and one Ace, your count would be +2 (plus two) for the up-coming hand. (Three 5s at a value of +1 (plus one) each or +3, and one Ace with a value of -1 (minus one). 3 - 1 = +2). With this information you now know that for the next hand you are more likely to get an Ace as opposed to a 5. Betting for a six deck game you will bet the minimum when your count is at +2 (plus two) or lower. If you get a count of +3 or +4 for the up-coming hand, bet twice your minimum bet. oPoker_1/3page_vp ad.qxp 12:31 PM Page 1 bet four When your count is at +510/12/09 or higher for the up-coming hand,
times your minimum bet Here is a betting chart for a $5 dollar six deck table Count. Bet 2 or lower $5 +3 $10 +4 $10 +5 or higher $20. Betting according to your count will reduce the Casino’s edge from .52 down to .08, because you are increasing your wagers when the composition of the cards for the upcoming hand favor the player, and playing the minimum when the dealer has the advantage
Playing the Hands You must know and play basic strategy perfectly to maximize the reduction of the Casino’s edge. There is no room for hunches or gut feelings. How much of a reduction depends on the house rules, number of decks, how well you play basic strategy, and how accurately you keep track of the Aces and 5s. While you will not have a mathematical advantage over the casino using the Ace-five count, you will be able to reduce the house edge a little bit more than if you were just using basic strategy. In fact after 25,000 hands you will have a 25% chance of being ahead. If you decide that card counting is for you and would like to take your game to the next level, I cover card counting in my book. My system keeps track of all the cards as they are dealt, and has a betting and playing strategy according to the count. By playing this way you have a mathematical advantage over the Casino. Then it will be you, not the house, who has the advantage when you sit down to play. If you would like a copy of my book or have any questions or comments my E mail is; TJ4justice1@msn.com T.J. Derby Picture Coming Into Focus
ith the Santa Anita Derby and the Wood Memorial in the books, the Kentucky Derby picture is much less fuzzy and online sports betting site players can bank on the winners of those races being factors at Churchill. Last year was resurgence for the Santa Anita Derby so don’t discount this prep. Stars like Affirmed, Majestic Prince, Winning Colors, Silver Charm and Sunday Silence came out of the SA Derby to win the Kentucky Derby. In 2012, I’ll Have Another prepped in California and his only poor race ever came at Saratoga on a sloppy surface. He parlayed a win in the Santa Anita Derby to a 15-1 victory in the Kentucky Derby but that was an unusual parlay of late. On a day when part owner of Goldencents Rick Pitino coached his Louisville basketball team to the Final Four, his runner was on the motor from the sound of the bell and came away late to win the Santa Anita Derby. Ironically, the Louisville players had honored the injured player Kevin Ware by wearing his Number 5 in the warm-ups last weekend and Goldencents carried that same number to victory as he broke from post 5. Favored Flashback had every chance to win but he just could not out game Goldencents, who is trained by Doug O’Neill, the winning trainer of last year’s Kentucky Derby winner. Tracking splits of :46 2/5 and 1:10 2/5, Goldencents got the 9 furlongs of the SA Derby in 1:48 3/5 when recording a 105 Beyer. Last year, I’ll Have Another went in 1:47 4/5 and earned a 95 Beyer. Goldencents has been a true bargain. He cost $62,000, now has earned over $1.2 million, and his tactical speed will be big at Churchill. Next stop Kentucky The Wood Memorial was a great race to watch last Saturday, as Todd Pletcher’s trainee Verrazano remained unbeaten. The sophomore has now made no mistakes in 4 starts and he really dug in during the drive in the Wood showing some serious grit to hold off a closing Normandy Invasion and spoil Vyjack’s unbeaten record as that runner settled for third. The son of More Than Ready sat off moderate splits of :49 3/5 and 1:13 3/5 before finishing up in 1:50 1/5 for the 9 furlongs earning a 95 Beyer. One of the important things he did was he proved he could stand up to a challenge once hooked. Last year Gemologist won the Wood in 1:50 4/5 earning a 98 Beyer but was only a brief factor in the Kentucky Derby. The Wood has been an important Derby prep for decades. In 1973, Secretariat was third in the Wood before going on to win the Triple Crown. From 1975 to 1977 every winner of the Wood cashed the first Saturday in May at Churchill. Foolish Pleasure started the streak, Bold Forbes continued it, and Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew completed the 70s Show. In 1980 the filly Genuine Risk followed in the footsteps of Secretariat running third in the Wood but winning the Kentucky Derby. 24 ARIZONA PLAYER April 2013
The next year, the long-fused Pleasant Colony parlayed the Wood to success in the Derby. Go for Gin, Funny Cide and Monarchos were 2nd in the Wood before winning in Kentucky and the last Wood winner to cash in the Run for the Roses was Fusaichi Pegasus in 2000. Verrazano’s rider, Johnny Velazquez, has a decision to make, as he is also the regular rider for Florida Derby winner Orb. Pletcher saw the Wood as an educational tool, Pletcher: “I think he’s still learning, he’s had a tendency to kind of idle a little bit and wait on company down the lane, I thought he did that a little bit. It’s the first time he really had horses real close to him at the finish of a race. Hopefully, every step we make is a learning experience for him and he learns to polish these races off a little better.” With just weeks remaining to the Kentucky Derby, Verrazano and Goldencents have proven to be true contenders, but there are a number of great story lines waiting all of us in the days to come. The Arkansas Derby and the Blue Grass will help to put things in focus next, but players should pay attention to other horses in the Run for the Roses too. Those not mentioned in this article include Revolutionary, Uncaptured, War Academy, Lines of Battle and Will Take Charge. Good luck the first Saturday in May.
Brian Mulligan was the main West Coast line-maker for 17 years for the Daily Racing Form writing under the non de plume of “SWEEP” He continues to contribute to the Daily Racing Form writing “A Closer Look” analysis daily. Editor’s note; Speaking of the Kentucky Derby and Churchill Downs, The most familiar name in horse racing has added to its gaming portfolio recently by purchasing Maine’s Oxford Casino for $160 million. The acquisition is part of a strategy by Churchill Downs to transition from a pure racing entity into a regional gaming operator. This marks the fourth casino Churchill Downs has bought.

gaming news ODDS ARE: BASEBALL IS BACK! The “Boys of Summer” (at least most of them) are back and being the gambler that you are – You may wonder “Just what are the chances my team winning the NL or AL pennant and even go on to win the World Series?” Well, let’s take a look, just like other off-seasons, there were free agent signings, trades, spring training injuries, players that retired and former big stars who have opted to play in Japan or signed minor league contracts hoping to make it back to the show. Now, here’s pre-season look at the odds – called the “Baseball Futures” for the 2013 season - according to Vegas odds-makers. DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR 42 Jackie Robinson was recruited out of the Negro Leagues by Branch Rickey of the Brooklyn Dodgers and would go on to break the color barrier in Major League Baseball. Ricky considered many players but chose Robinson because, while he may not have been the best player, he had the right temperament by David Ramsey to handle the pressure. Harrison Ford is terrific as Rickey - playing him with humor and gravitas. There are a couple times when Brian Helgeland, the writer/director, gets a little schmaltzy but the rest of the film is so good they can be overlooked. “42” is about what Jackie Robinson had to go through and it’s about Branch Rickey taking a stand but at its core it is about a love of baseball.

This story of the friendship between a star pitcher and a marginal half-wit catcher will touch your heart. Robert De Niro gives a power performance as the catcher who just wants to play. This may be baseball’s “Brian’s Song”.
Roy Hobbs is shot on this way to the majors and almost dies. Years later he gets his shot and makes the most of it. While predictable and syrupy it is still wonderful to watch Roy light up the stadium with a home run. Robert Redford is perfect and the rest of the cast is just as good.

This film set the standard for sports comedy and has some of the best lines ever.

Jokes of the Month A REASON TO SPEED
A traveling salesman who spends way too many days on the road was driving along a long stretch of highway near the California border and seeing that there was very little traffic, put the “pedal to the metal” and sped up to get to his next appointment.
The lawyer replies, “Your blood matches the DNA found at the murder scene.” “Dammit!” cries the client. “What’s the good news?” “Well,” the lawyer says, “Your cholesterol level is pretty low at 120.”
Within a few minutes he noticed flashing red and blue lights in his rearview mirror. He knew he was caught and slowly pulled over.
STREET SMARTS
The officer walked up, and asked “I hope you have a good reason why you were driving so damn fast”
Earl was walking down the street when he came across a dead body at the about a half block from the street corner, he used his cell phone and called 911.
The salesman thought for a moment and replied “Well, my wife left me last week and just left a note on the bedroom door that she was running off with a highway patrolman - I thought you were that guy and you were bringing her back!”
The 911 operator told Earl that she would send someone out right away. “Where are you located?” she asked.
The officer laughed and gave him a warning.
The 911 operator asked, “Can you spell that for me?
