$1,000,000 WINNER AT DESERT DIAMOND!
On Monday April 15th, just in time to pay any taxes that might have been owed for the year 2012, Edward B. of Phoenix won $96,724 playing bingo at VeeQuiva Casino! The lucky winner was playing “Lucky 7” when he hit the combination of numbers and landed the incredible jackpot. The Lucky 7 Jackpot triggers when a player forms a number 7 on their bingo card before 21 total numbers are called. VeeQuiva Casino’s 366 seat state-of-the-art bingo hall features matinee and evening Sessions. Each session includes multiple opportunities to win big games like Moneyball, Fireball Bingo, Super X, Cash Pyramid, Grand Slam, Jackpot Coverall and Lucky 7. On April 26, one lucky guest at Desert Diamond Casinos & Entertainment’s Tucson location walked away with a jackpot of more than one million dollars! Mohan N. hit the jackpot on a $1 bet on the Wheel of Fortune progressive slots. The mega-jackpot totaled a whopping $1,135,557.38 as Mohan instantly became Tucson’s newest millionaire. Mohan and his family live in Tucson where he works in the healthcare industry, and he admitted to being in a “state of shock” when he hit the jackpot. He went on to say he loves Desert Diamond Casinos and, although he has visited other casinos, Desert Diamond Casinos is by far his favorite. Although Mohan is enjoying his newfound millionaire status, he fully intends to keep working as he loves his job. A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER
Footprints
by Linda Boyd n days gone by it was easy to find excellent versions of classic video poker (VP) games in Arizona, New Jersey and Nevada casinos. Even today, if you want to play VP you’ll find some of the best plays available in these three venues. (Be aware that many jurisdictions, unlike Arizona, Nevada and New Jersey have lower maximum expected ER’s, making the better games illegal. You should check with the jurisdiction in which you’re playing to be sure.) Unfortunately, the trailblazing footprints of past good plays are getting more difficult to find. Every time a legislative body decides to take a bigger cut of casino profits, the additional cost comes from the player’s theoretical return and not from the house. So, be more diligent than ever before in tracking down the games with the best odds available.
Jacks or Better (JOB):
Briefly, this is an excellent choice, especially for earning promotion entries. That’s because you can play a long time on your designated bankroll since it is less volatile (compare variances on Tables 1.1 and 1.2), paying double your wager on two pair. (Note both DB and DDB only return even money on two pair, a frequent hand.) A caution is to only consider either 9/6 JOB or 8/5 JOB (preferably a progressive version). My soon to be released YouTube video with American Casino Guide gives you 10 good reasons to choose JOB as your go-to VP game.

Footprints: It used to be easy to find 9/6 JOB in casinos; nowadays your best bet is an 8/5 progressive game. Personally, I will not play any version less than 8/5, but that’s your choice. Always know the ER before deciding.

Footprints: Players could find both 10/6 and 9/6 DDB just a few years ago; now you’ll have to settle for 9/5 or 8/5 DDB pay schedules. You should make sure that the 8/5 version is progressive and avoid any lower ERs. I’ve noticed players still gravitate to this game but they complain about their quickly disappearing bankroll without realizing the problem is with the downgraded pay table and the casino has not rigged the machines.
Final Thoughts:
The first VP footprints were left in the mid-seventies by IGT founder Si Redd with a game he called “draw poker”. In the years that followed, dozens of options were introduced by game-makers but only a handful survived and the rest became extinct. That’s because they were too quirky and players rapidly lost their bankroll. VP had a “golden age” starting in the late 1990’s with Dean Zamzow’s brilliant tutorial software, WinPoker. Smart gamblers could now select games that gave them an edge over the house and play them statistically accurate. Unfortunately, this path to riches came to an end when casinos chose the downgraded game options seen in Tables 1.1 and 1.2. Today the slope continues to head south, so it’s more important than ever to learn to play correctly and select the version with the highest ER available. Linda Boyd ,a long-time table game player before turning to video poker, writes also for “Southern Gaming” & “Midwest Gaming and Travel” Her book, “The Video Poker Edge”, includes free removable pay schedules and strategy cards for the most popular games. Look for her story in the 2012 Edition of “American Casino Guide” (ACG) and her YouTube videos, also with ACG. The 2010 Second Edition of her book is available in both paperback and kindle. lottery news A Lucky Quick Trip
Gas Stop nets $50,000 Selena Mansouri of Phoenix and her boyfriend were in a QuikTrip on Sunday March 10 and although she buys Scratchers about three times a week, she was having trouble deciding which one to buy. When she couldn’t make up her mind, her boyfriend pointed to Lucky Horseshoe Bingo and suggested she buy one, so
she did. Selena and her boyfriend took the ticket home and shared the scratching honors. First, she would scratch a section - then hand it to him for his turn. As it happened, he ended up scratching the section showing that they had won the top prize of $50,000 - Of course, neither of them quite believed it at the time. After Selena knew she had a winning ticket, she signed the back and hid it. Reason being, because of her schedule – getting to the Arizona Lottery was not possible until Tuesday to redeem the winning ticket. She admitted having trouble sleeping that night. Selena works in the medical field and is ready for a break. After she pays off some bills, she intends to take a much-neededvacation. The winning ticket was purchased from QuikTrip at 2836 N. 27th Ave., Phoenix.

Gerald Thomas of San Tan Valley was still in a state of shock after discovering that one of the four Arizona Black LimitedScratchers he’d purchased was a big winner. On that Friday, he’d taken his mother grocery shopping and then stopped to gas up the car. While at the station, he saw the Scratchers vending machine and made his purchase. Gerald didn’t scratch the tickets right away - he waited until he returned home after going out with some friends. He was stunned when he saw that one of the tickets was a $50,000 winner. Just to be sure - although it was late, he woke up his parents and had them double check the ticket. They agreed that it definitely looked like a winning ticket. Since it was Friday, and he couldn’t redeem it until Monday, making it a very long weekend. The only plans Gerald has for his winnings are to pay off all his bills, take his parents on a small vacation, and bank the rest. However, he couldn’t contain his excitement over winning. He said, “I’ve never won before and never expected it to happen.” The winning ticket was purchased from the Valero Corner Store at 8424 S. Power Road in Gilbert.
FROM A WOMAN’S POINT OF VIEW
LADIES DAY AT TALKING STICK RESORT
ecently we spend three days in Las Vegas to come to the realization that we are pretty damn lucky by Marianne Minneci to be living in Arizona. We have some of best card rooms in the country not only right here in the Valley of the Sun, but throughout our beautiful state. One of these venues is the Arena Poker Room at Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale, and on Sunday, April 14th I decided to play in the monthly Ladies tournament. Now let me say this; along with the best poker venues in the southwest - we also have some of the best players too. And that was evident when I sat down at my tournament table. I haven’t been playing a lot of poker lately because of my work schedule, but playing poker is like riding a bike, it’s something you never forget. I managed to get right back into the groove very quickly. It didn’t take long for me to evaluate the players at my table. I soon knew who the solid players were and who was after a quick win by trying to bluff me out of a hand.
20 ARIZONA PLAYER May 2013
My instincts were pretty good and I held out for over 5 hours to come in 12th place - only two spots from the money. After winning a few large pots, my over confident side took over to cost me a good portion of my chips. The river wasn’t kind to me, giving my opponents the edge and ultimate wins. On two occasions I was leading till the turn, but on the river…..OUCH! The first hit came when I called an all-in bet with an 8-9 of spades against a queen of hearts and an ace of spades. When two spades dropped on the flop and another on the turn, I was feeling pretty good about my hand, and my opponent seemed ready to accept her fate. Then on the river; you guessed it, another spade giving my opponent the nut flush and the pot. Not long after that, I called another all-in bet. My opponent showed pocket kings against my A-Q. An ace fell on the flop so things were looking up. The turn card didn’t help either of us. But on the river another king hit the board which knocked my chip stack down almost to the felt. With only a few chips left, I went all in with an A-6 off-suit against a K-8 off-suit. The river rose to the occasion again when an 8 fell giving my opponent all she needed as the dealer yelled - PLAYER OUT! Looking at it in a positive light however, being 12th out of 76 players wasn’t a bad finish even if it didn’t put me in the money. It was a good tournament and I had a great time matching wits with the ladies at my table. Shortly after my demise, another player met a similar fate and they were down to ten. The first person eliminated from the final table was Anna Ellis walking away with $90 for 10th place,
followed by Stephanie Nolan in 9th winning $135 - 8th place and $180 went to Glenda Hicks, 7th to Troy Dawson at $225, 6th place money of $270 to Carmel Zarecor, 5th spot to Faye Murphy at $360 and 4th place to Debbie L’Heureux who took home $450. The final three ladies left in the tournament were Deepa Shah, Nancy Dietz and Jamie Denke, all regulars at the Arena poker room. The chip lead passed back and forth for several hands, but in the end Deepa Shah’s Q-8 of spades was bested by Jamie Denke’s A-Q off-suit. Deepa received $540 for her third place finish. The final two players had chip stacks that were nearly even with Nancy Dietz having a slight lead. At this point however, Jamie Denke and Nancy Dietz opted to split first and second place giving them each a payday of $1,125. Congratulations to all the winners. It was a great tournament and I look forward to seeing everyone again next month on at the Arena, along with some other Ladies only tournaments I plan on participating in that include; Fort McDowell Casino every 3rd Sunday at 10am and at Mazatzal Casino in Payson at 6pm on the 1st Thursday of every month. Until next time Good Luck! You can reach Marianne at azpokerlady@gmail.com

To Get Where You Are You Had To Begin Where You Were
am often asked how I got started doing what I do. Well it all started when I was in college and took a course in probabilities. I thought it was interesting that you could accurately predict the outcome of games of chance using mathematics. Since I had been playing kitchen blackjack with my relatives on holidays from about the time I was five - this fascinated me. From there it led to calculating the probabilities of winning a sweepstakes. Since my friends and I were poor college students with some extra time on our hands we decided to put our calculations to the test. We started with local drawings. The first one was for a go kart. We estimated the size of the box and how many entry forms that it could hold. Then we calculated the number of entries we needed to have in order to reduce the odds of winning to about two to one. When the drawing was held we won. Next we entered a sweepstakes on the back of a cereal box. In the rules where it said no purchase necessary just send in a post card, well we did, thousands of them, we received the 2nd grand prize. About this time Julian Braun of IBM ran millions of simulations on a main frame to find the best way to play each possible hand in blackjack. His conclusions were used in Edward Thorp’s 2nd edition of “Beat the Dealer” which proved that you could gain a mathematical advantage over the casinos in the game of blackjack by counting cards. When I found that I could have a long term advantage over the casino when playing blackjack I was in. I bought Lawrence Reveres Book “Playing Blackjack as a Business.” I studied and mastered the card counting system, the same one that I use today. From there, I made frequent trips to Vegas and tracked all my play. Month

after Month I would come out ahead. Not only was I having fun, but I was making money too, lots of it. Contrary to what people might think, I don’t consider myself a pro gambler, I consider myself an investor who expects a return on his money. I know that if I play my game flawlessly - in the long run I will come out ahead, and I have month after month, year after year. If I didn’t I wouldn’t play. I don’t know of any pro gamblers of slot machines, keno, roulette or craps, because if you are playing those casino games, you have a negative value event and eventually the casino will have their edge. Now, there are “Lucky streaks” where you may hit a big jackpot or hold the dice for a long time or have your roulette numbers come up for a huge win and you know when to cash out and come back another time – then you are a disciplined gambler and you will do much better than the average player. No matter how lucky you are you will eventually lose if you play long enough – so know when to walk away on any game. The only players that can show a profit year after year are card counters who play the system flawlessly and video poker professionals. Anyone else should be playing for entertainment - because they will eventually give back all their winnings. So that’s where I started to end up where I am. If you decide that you want to be more than a recreational player playing for entertainment, learn my system and start making some serious money. My book “Beating the Casino At Their Own Game” Is available on my website www.freewebs.com/tjsblackjackcorner It’s never too late to be who you might have been. T.J. Jorgensen has been a professional Blackjack player for over 20 years. He is well known for his live tournament play. He has competed against, and beaten, some of the top tournament players in the world and has won the prestigious World Series of Blackjack.

HORSIN’ AROUND

ORB COMES FULL CIRCLE
he word orb, from the Latin orbis ‘circle’, is a name for a round object, but the happiest round object in the Churchill Down’s winner’s circle Saturday was Orb’s trainer Shug McGaughey after his star won the Kentucky Derby. Orb broke a bit awkward, then raced 4 wide on the first turn, was pushed 6 wide near the 3-furlong marker, got the leader in midstretch, then drew clear to win by a widening 2 and a half lengths. Sent off as the tepid 5-1 favorite, Orb got fast splits to close into. He had to come from 16th in the 19-horse field and they went fast up front. Early leader Palace Malice carved out a :22.57, :45.33 and 1:09.80 pace before faltering to run 12th. The half-mile time of :45.33 was the second fastest in history and the threequarter split of 1:09.80 was the fourth fastest ever. But with that said, Palace Malice ran much better than the other runners that were prominent early. The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th early runners finished 14th, 18, and 17th respectively. Orb’s final time of 2:02.89 was solid considering the sealed sloppy track. Last year I’ll Have Another got the Derby final time in 2:01 4/5 on a fast track and recorded a 101 Beyer Speed Figure. Orb was credited with a solid 104 Beyer. For McGaughey, this is not his first rodeo. He has been training for 34 years and has conditioned champion after champion. This was his seventh Derby starter; his first ran in 1984. McGaughey: “The way it’s going to change my life is, I’m not going to have to worry about it anymore - Because I’ve worried about it for a while. And I might not let anybody know that, but inside, that thought was always there.” Orb’s rider Joel Rosario gave his favorite horse A Perfect Trip and what a year Rosario has had. This winter he won the $6 million World Cup in Dubai, was the leading rider at Keeneland, and in the first day of this Churchill meet he won with 5 of his first 7 mounts.

The future is super bright for Orb and he only figures to improve. Orb is bred to get the classic distance on top as his sire has sired successful major winners at a mile and a quarter like Life and Ten and Funny Moon. His dam won at a mile and half on turf and her sire won the 1990 Derby and the BC Classic. Orb reportedly came out of the race no worse for wear and has rebounded from all his efforts this year in similar style. As far as trouble was concerned in the Derby, a few horses had hard trips. Oxbow got caught up in a fast pace and Will Take Charge was forced to steady sharply at the top of the lane. Only a handful of Derby runners will follow him to Baltimore for the Preakness at Pimlico on May 18. Sixth finisher Oxbow and 8th finisher Will Take Charge, both trained by D. Wayne Lukas, will likely be set for the second leg of the Triple Crown. The 17th finisher Goldencents is likely and Mylute (5th) and Itsmyluckyday (15th) are possible. Second finisher Golden Soul will likely skip the Preakness and head to the Belmont. Chad Brown’s student Normany Invasion will pass on the Preakness and will point to the Travers Stakes at Saratoga this summer. Todd Pletcher will not take any of his 5 Derby starters to Pimlico. Orb will be a solid favorite in the Preakness, no matter who shows up to challenge – and his destiny just might be…to join the previous 11 Triple Crown winners.

DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR Iron Man 3 -

He has become obsessed with making better Iron Man suits. Meanwhile, a new villain calling himself The Mandarin is terrorizing the world and threatening the President. Tony
calls the Mandarin out on Television and when his home is attacked it becomes personal. Tony has to deal with his inner demons while trying to stop this mad man. And don’t forget about a couple of scientists from his past that mysterious reappear. “Iron Man 3” has lots of action and all the humor you expect. The cast is terrific and the writing is crisp and witty. I am looking forward to the next one.

Beautiful Creatures
The Great Gatsby Nick, a young writer, moves to 1920’s New York to make money on Wall Street and becomes embroiled in the lifestyle of the rich and flamboyant. He rents a small cottage next to a huge estate where wild parties go on every weekend. His cousin and her wealthy husband live across the river and its not long before he discovers there is connection between his beautiful cousin and his millionaire neighbor. The neighbor, Jay Gatsby, seems to have it all but he is obsessed with a past love and will do anything to get her back. Nick tells the story as he writes it from memory and I usually don’t like narration but it works here. The F. Scott Fitzgerald classic has never been better on screen. Baz Lurhmann is a gifted director who turns the slight story into a visual extravaganza. The cast is perfect but it’s the look and feel of “The Great Gatsby” that makes it worth seeing.
Ethan enters his senior year in high school longing to get out of his small Southern town. Then he meets the new girl in town, Lena, who lives with her Uncle at the mysterious Ravenwood estate. Trouble seems to follow Lena as something strange always happens when she comes to a new school. Everyone but Ethan believes the rumors that Lena and her family are witches. It’s not long before Ethan discovers Lena’s secret, not only is she a witch, on her upcoming 16th birthday she could become evil because of a family curse. Ethan has to help her break the curse but the cost may be too high. This is not “Twilight” with witches. “Beautiful Creatures” is a surprising good film with a very good cast and a well written script.
Cloud Atlas
The diary of a potential slave owner on a voyage across the ocean in 1949, a talented composer’s letters to a lover in 1930’s Britain, a reporter investigating a corrupt case in the 1970’s, a modern day publisher’s experiences in a nursing home, an escape in the future and a tribesman fighting for survival in a post-apocalyptic future. How the actions of individuals impact others and can shape the future. The same actors play multiple roles in the six seemingly unrelated stories and in many instances they are almost unrecognizable. As the stories unfold and go back and forth in time it can get a little confusing but if you stick with it you will experience an amazing example of filmmaking. IT STARTED OUT SO GREAT A police officer pulled over Otis and informed him that because he was wearing his seat belt, and made a proper turn, he had just won $200 in a safety competition. “What are you going to do with the prize money?” the officer asked. Otisresponded, “I guess I’ll finally buy some car insurance and start paying off some old speeding tickets.” Then his wife, chimed in”Officer, please excuse his comments - he’s always obnoxious when he’s had too much to drink!”
CAREFUL OF WHAT YOU ASK
“Sweetie, what do you like most about me” asks Debbie to her husband on their 40th Anniversary “My pretty face or sexy body?” He thought for a moment, raised his cocktail and replied “What I like most about you honey - is your terrific sense of humor”

I LOVE PARTIES! Barry returned from another month-long business trip abroad and as he was unpacking his bags his wife announces “Barry, I though you should know – I’m having an affair!” “GREAT, says Barry “are you having it catered, and will I have to rent a tux?”
NOT THE ANSWER HE WANTED Earl stormed into his favorite bar with a gun in his hand and yelled out “I know someone here has been seein’ my wife when I’m out of town – I’m here to confront whoever it is right now –and put an end to this, so….show yourself ” There was a long silence - then from the back of the bar someone yelled “You don’t have enough bullets!”
