A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER

by Linda Boyd

The R isk Factor Part I

can understand why video poker players get frustrated and start believing that either the casino is cheating or they have a dark cloud hanging over their head. The truth is, however, that you may just be at the wrong end of the bell-shaped curve for short-term play. After all, the approximate odds of getting a royal flush is around 1 in 40,000 give or take a few hundred, depending on the strategy for the game you’ve selected. So you can be playing a game that’s on the up-and-up yet run out of bankroll in a big hurry. In this two-part series we’ll take a close look at the risk factor, meaning the relative risk of you running out of bankroll, in easy to understand terms. Part I will deal with deuces wild games and Part II, in July’s Arizona Player, we’ll examine non-deuces games. Table 1.1 Not-S0-Ugly Deuces and Loose Deuces Winning Hand/ 5-Coin Bet Royal Flush/No Deuces 4 Deuces Royal w/ Deuces/Wild Royal 5 of a Kind Straight Flush 4 of a Kind Full House Flush Straight 3 of a Kind Expected Return (ER) Variance

Not-So-Ugly Deuces (NSUD): #1 4000 1000 125 80 50 20 20 15 10 5 99.7283% 25.78027

Loose Deuces: (LDW) #2 4000 2500 125 60 45 20 15 10 10 5 99.5952% 70.05136

Expected Return (ER): This figure indicates the theoretical return assuming correct play. 100% means you and the house have even odds, over 100% gives the player an advantage and less than 100% represents a house advantage. If you’re not sure of the ER there are free removable tables in my book, “The Video Poker Edge”.

Game Variance: This number represents the likelihood that the short-term results will resemble the game’s long-term theoretical expectations. The greater the variance the more likely short-term or session results will deviate from the ER, even with computer-perfect play.

The Risk Factor: Referring to Table 1.1 you will notice the two deuces wild games, NSUD and LDW have similar ER’s, but there is a significant difference in the variance figures. In fact the variance for Loose Deuces is almost three times as much as for Not-So-Ugly Deuces. This means that if you choose to play LDW then 6 ARIZONA PLAYER June 2013

you may run out of bankroll very quickly and it will not be because the casino is cheating or you are playing incorrectly. The reason is that you have a lot of collateral wrapped up in infrequent hands. In fact, in a future column I will give actual odds of specific hands so you have a crystal clear picture of what you’re up against.

Estimating Risk: If you’re in a casino and don’t have ER and variance data with you there’s a quick way to get a ball park idea of the games risk of ruin, a term that means the chances of you running out of money. If you’re playing any deuces wild game you’ll notice the royal usually returns 4,000 coins for a 5-coin wager, although occasionally you’ll find a progressive version. However, anytime you see a higher payout for 4 Deuces you’re looking at a high risk game. Referring to Table 1.1, you can see the LDW game returns 2,500 coins for 4 Deuces whereas NSUD only returns 1000 coins (assuming 5-coin bets). Notice, however, that you are paid less for the Flush, Full-House, Straight Flush and Fiveof-a-Kind in LDW. In other words you receive less for frequent hands and a big bonus for rare hands. You’ll see this same pattern in other deuces wild games, like Double Deuces Wild, another high risk game.

Final Thoughts: High risk deuces wild games are absolutely exciting and that accounts for their popularity. However, just like bungee jumping, you’re willingly taking a bigger chance than the non-riverboat gamblers want to assume. In fact, if part of your goal is to get a few hours of playing time then you should only allocate a portion of your session budget to this money-eater and then either choose a low risk deuces or non-deuces game. Also, be aware that you are likely to earn fewer promo entry tickets and less in comps and cash back. That’s because all of these perks are based on coin-in and if you’re quickly out of cash it means less money is run through the gaming device.

HORSIN’ AROUND

by Brian Mulligan

A nother One Bites The Dust

he band Queen’s chant of ‘Another One Bites The Dust’ was the overall theme Saturday for online sports betting site players after yet another horse won the a classic race in the Belmont Stakes and another year flies by without a Triple Crown winner. The Belmont Stakes favorite Orb was second to last early and was just left with too much work to do late as he finished third beaten 5 lengths. Palace Malice, who was equipped with blinkers for the Kentucky Derby and totally changed the complexion of the race, relaxed this time for rider Mike Smith sitting about 3 lengths off the lead, opening up 2 lengths at the top of the lane and drawing off to win by 3 and a quarter lengths. Preakness winner Oxbow proved he is the real deal by completing the exacta. As for the winners of all three legs of the Triple Crown, the adage ‘pace makes the race’ was never more evident. Orb benefited by a ridiculous pace in the Derby. The half-mile time of the Derby of :45.33 was the second fastest in history and the three-quarter split of 1:09.80 was the fourth fastest ever. The horse that was closest to the pace and still ran great in the Derby was Oxbow and he proved Poker_1/3page_vp ad.qxp 10/12/09 12:31 PM Page 1 he was the real deal winning in Baltimore 2 weeks later and running huge last weekend.

Oxbow, ridden by Gary Stevens who played George ‘Iceman’ Woolf in the movie Seabiscuit, sat chilly in the Preakness and it would have made the man he played in the movie smile.

Noboby else wanted the lead and Stevens lulled them to sleep on the front end. He went :23.94 in the opening quarter, got the half leading by 2 lengths and the half time was :48.60 and at the top of the lane, Stevens had already asked for and got separation opening up 3 lengths - The rest was anti-climactic. In the Belmont Stakes, Frac Daddy was committed to the lead after he drew the rail and Oxbow went right with him head-to-head. They went the first quarter in :23.11 and the half mile in :46.66, the second fastest Belmont Stakes half-mile of all time. To further put that half-mile into perspective - know that the fastest half of the Belmont

was set by the immortal Secretariat on way to his 31-length victory in 1973. When the pace is analyzed for Oxbow to finish second is nothing short of amazing. The other 2 horses that were vying for the lead finished last and second to last. Palace Malice, trained by Todd Pletcher, rated without blinkers in the Belmont and raced strong through the lane. Considering Palace Malice sizzled in the Derby, he still finished less than 4 lengths from the eventual Preakness hero - Far from disgraced in the Belmont debut when he was getting to the winner. Training up to the Belmont, his trainer pulled no punches and told everybody within his sights that Palace Malice was going to run huge. He drilled on May 27th without the blinkers and his trainer was impressed about the work, Pletcher: “he worked unbelievably well.. a monstrous gallopout, as good as you’ll ever see a horse gallop out”. Some trainers always just say their horses are doing well – but it’s part of the game, but we leaned here that Pletcher is a pretty straight shooter. Palace Malice earned a 98 Beyer Speed Figure for his Belmont win - and that stands up pretty solidly since last year’s Belmont winner Union Rags earned a 96 figure. In a perfect world, Orb, Oxbow and Palace Malice would meet in the August 24 Travers at Saratoga but a new shooter there could upset the apple cart. His name is Normandy Invasion. You heard it here first. The Jack, Queen & King – WHO ARE THEY?

by TJ Jorgensen ave you ever wondered how the face cards got their design? The four suites, clubs, hearts, diamonds, and spades originated in France in about 1480. Then in the 15th century the Europeans designed the Face Cards to represent European Royalty. There are many theories about whom the court cards are supposed to represent. One theory suggests that the Queen of Hearts is Judith (of the Book of Judith - an Apocryphal Book of the Bible). The King of Hearts represents Charlemagne, the King of Diamonds was Julius Caesar, the King of Clubs was Alexander the Great, and the King of Spades was the Biblical King David. Here is the list of who it is believed is represented by each face card. Playing Card King of Hearts Queen of Hearts

Have you ever looked closely at the differences between the Jacks, Queens, and Kings? The Jack of Spades, Jack of Hearts, and King of Diamonds are a side profile, while the rest of the face cards are a full face; the side profile cards are called “one-eyed”. When deciding which cards are to be made wild in some games, the phrase “acey-deucey” or “one-eyed Jacks” is sometimes used - which means that aces, twos or the one-eyed jacks are wild. The King of Hearts is the only King with no mustache, and has a sword behind his head, making him appear to be stabbing himself, which lead to the nickname “suicide king”. The axe held by the King of Diamonds is behind his head with the blade facing toward him. He is armed with an axe while the other three kings are armed with a sword and so the King of Diamonds is sometimes referred to as “the man with the axe”. This is the basis of the trump “one eyed jacks” and the man with the axe. The Jack of Diamonds is sometimes known as “laughing boy”. The Ace of Spades, is sometimes said to be the death card, and in some games is used as a trump card. The Queen of Spades usually holds a scepter and is sometimes known as “the bedpost Queen”, or sometimes she iscalled “Black Lady”. In many decks, the Queen of Clubs holds a flower. She is known as the “flower” Queen. Now with this new knowledge hopefully you will never look at a pack of playing cards the same again. Now you can impress friends or who knows – come up with the answer to a question on “Jeopardy” Until next month I hope you play a winning game. T.J. lottery news Nurse Claims $1 Million PowerballTicket! The Arizona Lottery announced the winner of the $1 million Powerball second prize from the drawing on May 11 has come forward. This is the 22nd $1 million Powerball second prize winning ticket sold in Arizona since $2 Powerball launched in January 2012 and one of three 2ndprize winning tickets sold during the record-breaking $590.5 million Powerball jackpot run. Krista Crawley, a registered nurse from Phoenix, purchased her winning ticket from the QuikTrip located at 2450 E. Union Hills Drive in Phoenix. Crawley discovered she was a winner on Mother’s Day, but waited to speak to a financial advisor to get “all her ducks in a row” before claiming the prize on Monday, May 20. Crawley said her win didn’t seem real to her until she actually saw the check. She is planning to go on a family vacation and invest the rest of her winnings. “Hearing about our newest Arizona millionaire was a thrill,” said Karen Bach, director of budget, products, and communications for the Arizona Lottery. “We are excited that the number of new millionaires statewide is continuing to grow and we look forward to meeting Arizona’s two $1 million second prize winners from the recordbreaking Powerball draw this past Saturday, who have yet to come forward.” The redesigned $2 Powerball game offers many appealing features to players, including better overall odds and jackpots that grow bigger, faster. The starting jackpot doubled from $20 million to $40 million and the second prize for matching all five numbers, without the Powerball, increased from $200,000 to $1 million. Since $2 Powerball launched in January 2012, there have been 24 $1 million second prize winning tickets sold in Arizona. Players must be 21 years or older to purchase or redeem tickets. Winners have 180 days from the drawing date to claim their prize at an Arizona Lottery office or by mail. Overall odds vary by game. All sales are final. In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, these materials may be made available in an alternate format. Gambling Problem? Call 1.800.NEXT STEP. Please Play Responsibly™. The Arizona Lottery operates entirely from the revenue it generates through the sale of its products; it receives no General Fund dollars from the State. Proceeds from sales of Lottery tickets - over $3 million per week - fund a variety of state programs. Since July 1981, the Arizona Lottery has paid out more than $5 billion in prizes to players, over $2.8 billion in net profit to the state and almost $591 million in commissions to retailers.

Office Pool Claims $1,000,000 Prize!

The Arizona Lottery has announced that one of the two $1 million Powerball second prize winning tickets from the drawing on May 18 has been claimed by a group of 15 co-workers from Safford. This is the 23rd $1 million Powerball second prize winning ticket sold in Arizona since $2 Powerball launched in January 2012 and one of three second prize winning tickets sold during the recordbreaking $590.5 million Powerball jackpot run. Three representatives of the 15-member office pool, who call themselves “The Safford Fortunate 15,” claimed the group’s winning ticket at the Arizona Lottery office in Phoenix. Donna Talley, Wendy Layton and Gloria Ogas were overjoyed with their win.Talley purchased the winning Quick Pick ticket at the Giant Service Station on Highway 70 in Safford. She received a call from a coworker saying they had five matching numbers the morning after the draw. When she walked into the store after church on Sunday to check the tickets, the clerk said, “We’ve been waiting for you.” Each member of the pool received a check for $46,666.90 after taxes. “It was a thrill meeting the three women who came in to claim the office pool’s winning ticket,” said Karen Bach, director of budget, products, and communications for the Arizona Lottery. “They were extremely grateful, and it’s nice to know this win will benefit a group of 15 co-workers who will be able to celebrate and share in this wonderful experience together.” The other $1 million Powerball second prize winning ticket from the drawing on May 18 that was sold in Chandler is yet to be claimed.

DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR Now You See Me An FBI agent and an Interpol detective team up to investigate the robbery of a French bank by a group of magicians in Las Vegas. It appears as if they robbed the bank in Paris as part of their act in a casino showroom. They by David Ramsey know the magicians were behind the theft but unable to prove that it wasn’t magic so they decide to stake out the next show. This time they head to New Orleans for what they is billed as the second of three huge events. The magicians are at the top of their game and stay one, or more, steps ahead of the authorities. It turns into a bizarre, but exciting investigation that keeps the audience guessing. There is a lot going on but if you try to figure it out you will but it’s much more fun to just go with it. The cast is very good and there is plenty of action and some very cool illusions.

The Internship Two friends, who happen to be very good sales people, are suddenly without a job when their company closes. They have a hard time finding a job that offers any kind of future so they look elsewhere. They end up applying for an internship, that could lead to jobs, with Google. They barely get into the program and when they get there they realize are out of their depth. Not only are they older than all of the other interns they are lacking in basic computer skills and knowledge. Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson pretty much play the same characters they did in «Wedding Crashers» but they are not nearly as entertaining here. Vaughn starts off annoying and only gets worse but if you are a fan it›s what you want from him. This is a basic fish-out-of-water story with a predictable ending but there are enough chuckles to make it an amusing couple hours.

David’s Video Details Oz the Great and Powerful

A charming carnival magician and con man named Oz escapes an angry husband in a hot air balloon but runs right into a giant tornado. After coming out of the tornado he crashes in a strange enchanted land where he is met by a beautiful young woman who believes he is the great wizard come to fulfill the prophecy. This prequel to the classic “Wizard of Oz” starts in Kansas in black and white going color and widescreen once in Oz just like the original. James Franco is perfect as Oz, and the rest of the cast is delightful. He is joined on his quest by a pair of unlikely companions, a flying monkey and a little china doll. It’s not long before Oz discovers there is more going on than he was told. Action, humor and a touch of romance combined with breathtaking visuals and astounding effects make “Oz the Great and Wonderful” a perfect prequel to one of the greatest films of all time

Warm Bodies

After a zombie epidemic sweeps the planet there is only a small hand full of humans living inside an area protected by a huge wall. Their leader sends out a scouting party that includes his daughter, Julie, to get much needed medical supplies from the pharmacies in the nearest city. At the local airport a young male zombie who can only remember that his name started with an R wanders aimlessly among many others of his kind. He is hungry and leads a group to the city looking for food. The two groups encounter each other leading to a deadly battle. R sees Julie and something is rekindled in him and he protects her from the others. This leads to a most unusual romance between a human and a zombie. As R and his friends become more human Julie has to convince her father there are good zombies. «Warm Bodies» is perfect blend of action, romance and comedy making it a delightful film

Jack the Giant Slayer

Jack and Isabelle both grow up with the same bedtime story even though their lives couldn›t be more different. Jack is the son of a farmer and Isabelle is the land›s princess. The story they both know by heart is about a time long ago when giants fought humans for control the Earth. Everyone thinks it›s a fairy tale until Jack accidentally trades his uncles horse for a handful of beans. The next thing he knows a giant beanstalk sprouts taking his home and the princess up to Gargantua, the home of the giants. Jack joins a group of the King›s royal guard on a rescue mission. Things don›t go exactly as planned and aided by the betrayal of one of the king›s advisors the Giants are soon descending to Earth. The action is intense but there is the right amount of humor and romance in the mix - as a good fairy tale should have. While not for very young children it is perfect for older ones. «Jack the Giant Slayer» is a surprisingly good film with terrific special effects and a great cast. David Ramsey is the President and co-founder of the Phoenix Film Critics Society and a member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (The Critics Choice Awards). Watch him on the CBS 5 Morning News every Friday around 6:20am and on ABC-15’s “Sonoran Living Live” every other Friday at 11am. Read his DVD reviews at WildAboutMovies.com. Joke page PROBLEM SOLVED

Jokes of the Month

A young couple recently moved into a new house they bought together. Dave comes home from work the first day and Candice says, “Honey, in the upstairs bathroom one of the pipes is leaking, could you fix it?” Dave in an annoyed voice says, “What do I look like, Mr. Plumber?” The next day when he Dave gets home, there was another problem Candice said, “Honey, my car wouldn’t start today, so I had to miss work, I may need a new battery. Could you check it out, please? Dave shakes his head and replies “Who do I look like, Mr. Good Wrench?” That weekend it was raining real hard and Candice found a leak in the bedroom ceiling and asked Dave “sweetie, the roof is leaking! Can you please fix it?” Dave rolled his eyes and said, “Do I look like, Bob Vila?” That Monday when Dave got home from work, the roof was fixed. So was the plumbing and her car! Dave was astonished and asked “what happened?” Candice replies “Oh, I had a handyman come in and fix everything” “Great” snarled Dave “How much is that going to cost me?” “Nothing” says Candice. “He offered to do it all for free, if I either baked him a cake or spent the afternoon with him at his place.” “Well” Dave snorted, “Just what kind of cake did you make for this goof ball?” Candice looked confused and replied “Who do I look like….Betty Crocker?”

THE INSULT

A woman gets on a bus with her baby. The bus driver says: ‘’WOW, that’s the ugliest baby I’ve ever seen!’’ The woman walks to the rear of the bus and sits down, fuming. She says to a man next to her: ‘’The driver just insulted me!’’ The man says: ‘’You go up there and tell him off. Go on, I’ll hold your monkey for you.’”

MUCH RELIEVED NOW A very successful CEO was about to take a month long business trip to the orient, but was nervous about leaving his much younger new bride alone. So he asked his best friend and golf buddy to keep an eye on her and if anything out of the ordinary occurred let him know. After nearly two weeks of no contact, he finally got this e-mail from his golf buddy. “The guy who visits you wife every night…did not show up tonight.”

PRETTY DUMB A young boy enters a barber shop selling the local newspaper. Tony the barber who is cutting an older client’s hair whispers to his customer, “This is the dumbest kid in the world - watch while I prove it to you.” Tony reaches into his cash register puts two dollar bills in one hand and four quarters in the other, he calls the boy over and asks, “Which do you want, son?” The boy takes the quarters and leaves. “What did I tell you?” Tony says. “That kid never learns!” Later, when the customer leaves, he sees the same young boy coming out of the ice cream store. “Hey young man, can I ask you a question? Why did you take the quarters instead of the two dollar bills?” The boy licked his cone and replied, “Because the day I take the 2 bucks - the game is over!”
