gaming news $118,000 Poker Jackpot on Christmas Day Bad beat triggers Super 77 progressive jackpot at Wild Horse Pass Winning a hand of Texas Hold ‘em with four-of-a-kind is a pretty good bet - However, on Wednesday December 25th at about 3am in the morning on Christmas Day - Brent Boughton discovered that losing with such a terrific hand can be much more rewarding. The Valley resident received the best holiday gift he could have hoped for that day when he took home the largest share of the $118,000 jackpot, because his unlikely loss triggered the Super 77 linked progressive jackpot at Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino. The Super 77 jackpot is triggered when a hand of four-of-a-kind (featuring sevens or better) is beaten by another player at the table. It’s called a “bad beat” because of the incredibly low probability of losing with such a great hand. It turned into the best beat Brent could have hoped for and helped him ring in a very happy new year with the second largest poker jackpot of 2013 at Gila River Casinos. The Super 77 linked progressive jackpot which connects VeeQuiva Hotel & Casino and Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino was at $118,000 when Brent’s four-of-a-kind nines (pocket 9’s plus two more that hit the board) was beaten by Sean Curtis who was holding Pocket Kings and caught two additional kings during the flop, turn and river cards! This amazing jackpot was split between the six players at the table. Here’s how the payouts looked; Brent’s losing hand paid an incredible $58,500, Sean’s winning hand paid $29,252, plus of course the pot. The remaining 4 players at the table included; Peter T., Timothy B., Reza A. and Savas E. These 4 lucky players split the remaining $29,252 or to be more precise

$7,312 each. An amazing payout for just playing at that table! Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino is located at 5040 Wild Horse Pass Blvd in Chandler. Gila River Gaming Enterprises, Inc. operates three Arizona casinos owned by the Gila River Indian Community including; Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino, Lone Butte Casino, and VeeQuiva Hotel & Casino. All three casinos offer a combination of slots, table games, bingo, poker and hotel and are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Additional information on these and other events is available by calling 1-800-946-4452, or on their website at www.wingilariver.com.

lottery news A Significant Win

No false alarm this time

There was a lot of whooping and hollering at the Arizona Lottery office when Lisa Hirsch found out there was no mistake; her Slingo Trio Scratchers was indeed a $50,000 winner. She’s only been playing this game for a few weeks, after a friend recommended it. This time, she purchased several of them at a retailer at 59th Ave and Bell Road. Then, took them home to scratch them, Lisa and her significant other were afraid to get too excited until they were sure it was real. The ticket was not validated at the store, as they wanted to have the Lottery check it. Before that, Lisa checked the Lottery’s website and followed the instructions given for winners. The first thing she did was sign the back of the ticket. Lisa just plays Scratchers. “I’m afraid that if I buy the draw games, I might have a tendency to put them away and forget about them.” This is a life-changing event for Lisa as she’ll be able to pay off her car and, hopefully, have enough for a down payment on a new place to live. In her spare time away from her customer service job, Lisa enjoys making beadwork jewelry and crocheting. Her next favorite thing to do is walk her dog.

Esther Morales of Gilbert has been playing Diamond Dazzler Bingo Scratchers since it was first released. Her favorite games are any of the crossword or bingo Scratchers. As she does twice a week when grocery shopping at Fry’s Food Store on Val Vista Drive in Gilbert, Esther purchased three tickets from the Lottery vending machine and scratched them at home.Esther knew right away what she’d won and called her son to come over and see the ticket. He was a little doubtful, as previously she’d thought she had a big winner, and it turned out to be a false alarm. However, this time he discovered that his mother was right; it was a $50,000 winning ticket. One of Esther’s favorite pastimes is playing bingo, so any of the bingo Scratchers is a natural game for her to play. When she’s not playing bingo, she enjoys making jewelry and working in her garden. The only plans Esther has for the money is to put it in the bank and let it work for her.

A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER

Enquiring Minds

hate to admit it, but every now and then I surreptitiously by Linda Boyd slip a trash mag into my shopping cart. You know, Star, People, or, the granddaddy of them all, The National Enquirer. I honestly learn a lot about the latest styles, slang and celebrity gossip from these and other tabloids. I also learn a lot from readers who ask especially good questions. The one below came from a Southern Gaming subscriber and it’s one of my favorites. (I changed nothing in the letter so this is the way it came to me from my editor.)

DDB because of the adrenaline rush, and if I’m correct that it is essentially a “wash” between the 800 hands in JOB giving you 500 coins and the 423 hands (times 2) that give you 250 coins each, then I don’t feel like I’m compromising my bankroll but so much. Thanks for your input—and keep the articles coming! (I play $1 JOB on the 3 machines available at Resorts in Atlantic City.) Olivia in Virginia ]Here’s my answer: Note that it’s not verbatim since I sent my response to Olivia a few weeks ago and didn’t save it. In addition I want to make sure readers understand the data frequencies since I didn’t re-print the odds tables here. I will have odds tables for all winning hands right here in Arizona Player in future columns. Be aware that this player is referring to 9/6DDB and 9/6JOB.

Dear Ms. Boyd Love and look forward to your VP articles each magazine, but have a question from your most recent entitled “Winning Hand Frequency for 9/6 JOB.” Dear Olivia, You were comparing returns for JOB and DDB and menYou’re correct in saying you’ll get approximately two 4OAKs tioned folks loving the 4OAK payouts in DDB compared to the every hour, so that’s around twice every 800 hands in both DDB 4OAK JOB payouts. I know the volatility is much greater in and JOB, as you said. You already understand that statistically DDB, but here’s my question: If you “give up” the 500 coins you’re losing 500 coins in DDB during the same cycle by getting per hour (playing 800 hands per hour) that 2 pair pay you in even money instead of double your wager every time you have JOB and play DDB instead, why wouldn’t this loss come close 2 pair as a final hand. Two pair occurs once every 8 hands, to being made up by the 2 “regular” 4OAKS that you should on average, and after 800 hands you’ll have lost 500 coins in statistically receive every 423 hands in DDB that you indicated? 9/6DDB (5 coins times 100 hands equals 800 coins). In return oker_1/3page_vp ad.qxp 10/12/09 12:31 PM Page 1 I probably didn’t word this correctly for it to make sense, you’ll receive 500 coins in DDB for the two sets of quads if but I hope you understand what I’m getting at. I do love they’re 5’s through kings. What you didn’t figure is that if you

will receive 250 coins in JOB for the quads in addition to, the 500 coins for two pair. So in DDB you’ll have 500 coins instead of 750 coins in JOB at the end of 800 hands, unless you get the infrequent 4OAKs. So you’re risking 250 coins every hour in hopes of getting special 4OAKs in DDB. Keep in mind that the special bonuses are for 4 Aces, Twos, Threes or Fours; in addition, 2000 coins if the Aces have a kicker and 800 coins if the Twos, Threes or Fours have a kicker. (A kicker in DDB is Ace, Two, Three or Four.) Long odds indeed and the frequency of the long shot hands make DDB risky business.

Final Thoughts: I really love thoughtful questions like this one because it gives players a realistic expectation of the game they’ve selected. Should You “Push Your Luck?”

Editor’s Note: T.J. turned me on to this game a year ago - he mentioned that he by TJ Jorgensen “pushed” 8 times on one shoe, playing a $50 hand and $25 on the “Push” - for a total win of $2,000 on just the “Push” bet. I have been playing this bet ever since, and it has helped me keep a stack of chips to keep playing, when otherwise I would have been down to the felt. During the past year players have asked me why I play this “side bet” and I have told them, it is the only one I ever play on recommendation from my blackjack writer. I have been asked to re-run this article and include the betting chart - So, here it is.

ome Casinos now offer a side bet called “Push Your Luck” - In the Phoenix area Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino and Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino Resort offer this game in the blackjack pit. Most side bets are bad bets, however the cost of playing this one is relatively low, and it does pay 10 to 1. When calculating the odds, I was surprised to find that the house edge on this bet is small compared to that of other side bets. If you play the max on your side bet which is equal to 1/2 of your main bet the house edge goes from .51% to around .76% for a six deck game. That's a cost of .025% - however, you are getting 10 to 1 odds. I took this a little further. If you were dead set on playing this side bet, you actually would discard basic strategy and use a different strategy. You would end up hitting most of your hands under 17 regardless of

what the dealer was showing. I am sure you would really make the other players lose their minds when you’re hitting 14 against a dealer up card of a six, but that would be the correct play. So you might want to wait until you are alone with the dealer or at least ask the other players if they mind if you play a bit crazy. In any event I’ve included the correct strategy for "Push Your Luck" for a six deck game. If you are serious about playing this game - cut out the Strategy chart and keep it in your wallet. T.J. Jorgensen has been a professional Blackjack player for over 20 years. He is well known for his live tournament play and has competed against, and beaten, some of the top tournament players in the world. He has also won the prestigious World Series of Blackjack. His book, "Beating the Casino at Their Own Game," is available through his web site www.freewebs.com/tjsblackjackcorner or by e-mail TJ4justice1@msn.com

Such a small entry fee for a $12,500 Guaranteed Prize Pool! This special event paid 41 places. 21st thru 41st received $50, 11th thru 20th took home $100 - Tenth place paid $250 and went to Eric Doyle. There was a special “Chop” whereas the top 9 were guaranteed $ 957 each - So the next 5 players out got that prize money, and they were; Adam Williamson, Jason Miller, Teresa Boothe, Michael Bedford and Francine LeRoy. The final 4 wanted to stop play and agreed to an even “Chop” of $1,353 each - Those players were; Jack Wagner, Chris Cotty, Mary Jordan and Andrew Abela

This was an unbelievably well run tournament when you consider tournament coordinators Steve Briquelet and Lori Whittaker were breaking 2 tables at a time throughout the first two to three hours of this event. What an outstanding job these two did in running this tournament without a hitch! All those players I talked to were looking forward to playing again next year. The Arena Poker Room at Talking Stick Resort is located at the Loop, 101 and Indian Bend Rd in Scottsdale. For more information call 480-850-7777.

Jokes of the LITTLE JOHNNY – JUST LIKE DAD

Little Johnny was in class and the teacher announced that they were going to try something different to help everyone get to know each other a little better, and to help with their spelling. She explained, “I want you to stand up and give us the occupation of your father, spell it, and say one thing he would give us all if he was here today.” The first student raised her hand to volunteer. “Marcy,” the teacher said. “You may go first.” Marcy replied, “My father is a banker. B-A-N-K-E-R and if he was here today, he would give us all a shiny new penny.” The teacher said, “Very nice, Marcy, who wants to go next?” Kevin stood up and announced, “My father is a baker. B-A-K-E-R and if he was here today, he would give us all a freshly-baked cookie.” “Very good,” the teacher told Kevin. Jeff was next, and he said, “My father is an accountant. A-K, no wait, A-C-K, no...” Before he could attempt to spell it once more, the teacher cut him off and told him to sit back down and to think about it for a while. When he

thought he knew how to spell it, he could stand back up and try again. Little Johnny raised his hand in excitement hoping to be acknowledged by the teacher. The teacher called on little Johnny to go next. Johnny said, “My father is a bookie. B-O-O-K-I-E and if he was here today, he would give us all 20:1 odds Jeff will never be able to spell “accountant.”

Billy Hooks a Big One Billy phones home from the office and tells his wife Sandy, “Something has just come up. I need to go fishing with the boss for the weekend. We leave right away, so can you pack my clothes, my fishing equipment, and my blue silk pajamas? I’ll be home in an hour to pick them up.” Billy hurries home, grabs everything and rushes off. Sunday night, he returns. And sweet little Sandy asks, “Did you have a good trip?” “Oh yes! I think I really impressed the boss. Says Billy “But, you forgot to pack my blue silk pajamas darlin.” “Oh, no I didn’t, sweetheart” says Sandy “I put them in your tackle box.”

but first he has to keep her calm. Even if he can get to her how will they get back to Earth? “Gravity” is an edge of your seat thriller. Sandra Bullock and George Clooney are both at the top of their game and the special effects are amazing.

3. Much Ado About Nothing In rural Arkansas two young boys stumble across a mysterious stranger and agree to help him reunite with his true love. When they find out he is a fugitive on the run one of the boys, Ellis, becomes even more adamant at helping him. Meanwhile, Ellis’ parents are breaking up. While there is some action this movie is about relationships of all kinds, father-son, husband-wife, boy-girl, lovers and friends. The entire cast is perfect and the cinematography captures the look & feel of the location. “Mud” is a wonderful story that will touch you on many levels.

2. Short Term 12 Grace, a supervisor at a state run foster care facility for troubled children is juggling her duties with her personal relationships and her compassion for the kids she cares for. A new girl brings back memories of Grace’s past while a couple of the regulars are having issues that she has to dealt with. This low-budget independent film is touching, funny and insightful. “Short Term 12” is that rare gem of a film that makes sitting through hundreds of films worthwhile. 26 ARIZONA PLAYER January 2014

a tough time fitting in and one day he ends up at the local water park. Before he knows what his happening he wacky owner of the park offers him a job and he joins the group of oddballs that run the place. Before long he gains self-confidence and asks out the gorgeous girl next door. This coming of age film is one of the best of the genre with a witty script, quirky cast and some real hearty laughs.

5. Gravity

Joss Whedon’s take on the classic Shakespeare comedy is a delight. Soon after a war Don Predro visits the home of Leonardo bringing excitement, romance and intrigue. The story of two pairs of lovers with different takes on romance and a wonderful way with words is one of The Bard’s best. This version takes place in present day and that only enhances the dialogue and wit. “Much Ado About Nothing” proves what a great writer/director Whedon is.

4. The Way Way Back Duncan, is a shy 14-year-old who goes on summer vacation with his mother and her boyfriend. He has

A four man team of Navy SEALs goes into the hills of Afghanistan to capture or kill a notorious Taliban leader only end up trapped by a larger-than-expected enemy force and fighting for their lives while waiting for rescue. As they struggle to survive against overwhelming odds they depend on each other and faith in their brothers at arms. Amazing action/war sequences with real emotion. Lone Survivor, based on the true story of SEAL Team 10, it is one of the most realistic and devastating war movies of all time.

7. Captain Phillips When a disaster destroys their shuttle in orbit two American astronauts are left drifting in space. Matt is a seasoned veteran with a jet pack but Ryan is a scientist on her first mission. Matt has to find Ryan who is floating powerless deeper into space

Somali pirates hijack the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama taking its captain hostage. Told from both sides we get to know the hijackers and the crew. It was the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years and led to a military response. Tom Hanks is brilliant in the lead role. “Captain Phillips” will keep you on the edge of

your seat even if you remember the story from the headlines.

8. Nebraska

Woody, an aging, booze-addled man is determined to walk to Nebraska from Montana to collect the million dollars he believes he has won. It seems he got a letter saying he ‘may have won’ and he wants to collect. His wife has just about had it with him and the authorities are on the verge of locking him up. Finally one of his sons agrees to drive him there. It is a bonding experience that leads to a hilarious family and friends reunion. There are some very funny moments in this poignant touching film.

9. The Book Thief In World War II Germany young Liesel is adopted by a couple who is harboring a Jewish refugee in their basement. She finds comfort in stealing books and sharing them with the boy next door. We seldom have seen the story of German civilians struggling through the war and they get through it. “The Book Thief” is a powerful story of a young girl coming of age in the world in turmoil.

10. Frozen

After their parents are killed Princess Elsa lives in seclusion while her younger sister, Anna, grows up missing lonely. When Elsa turns 18 she is to be crowned Queen. At the party she loses control of her ‘ice’ powers plunging the kingdom into an eternal winter and then runs away. Anna goes after her with the help of Kristoff and a magical snowman Olaf. Touching, funny and magical Disney’s telling of Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Snow Queen” is not only the best version of the story it is the best animated film in years. Honorable Mention (in alphabetical order): American Hustle, Blue is the Warmest Color, Despicable Me 2, The Great Gatsby, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, In A World..., Oblivion, Prisoners, Rush, Saving Mr. Banks, Warm Bodies.
