Other changes include a new day lounge pool that will allow guests to be half in and half out while soaking up the sun in one of the 16 lounge chairs that are immersed in the pool. In addition to the day pool, six cabanas have been added to the area bringing the total to 27. Those renting a cabana will be treated like a VIP, as each will be outfitted with flat-screen TVs, furniture, ceiling fans and refrigerators. Seating at the pool also now includes 12 daybeds including eight canopied daybeds. Rounding out the new venue is the new stage. A Stageline Mobile Stage, this 40 x 60 foot SL320 converts from trailer to a stage. Along with the stage will be state-of-the art sound and lighting sophisticated enough to present some of the nation’s top headline acts. However, before bringing in an impressive roster of headliners, Talking Stick Resort will reveal its pool renovations during a two-day musical event honoring some of music’s hottest performers. Beginning Saturday, April 12, Talking Stick Resort’s TributeFest will kick off with such tribute artists as Queen Nation: A Tribute to the Music of Queen, Bonfire: A Tribute to AC/ DC and DSB: A Tribute to Journey. Each will take over the new outdoor stage and seam-

Guests will lounge poolside as the authentic tribute acts deliver highenergy renditions and play a collection of power anthems. “This event is truly one for the record books as it is the first of its kind in Scottsdale,” said Ramon Martinez, Director of Public Relations for Talking Stick Resort. “We have an exciting music lineup scheduled this year and thanks to the pool expansions, we’ll be able to accommodate up to 4,000 guests.” The outdoor concert series will be offered all summer long, allowing fans to enjoy live entertainment as they take in the sun’s rays. Following the property’s tribute festival; several local and national acts are already slated to perform on the pool’s stage including Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers on May 2, Staind on June 8 and 311 on June 29! Cocktail specials, reclining daybeds and cabana rentals will also be available. The TributeFest is free. A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER
The Monte Carlo Fallacy
he thing that struck me most about the casino by in Monte Carlo wasn’t Linda Boyd the array of Ferrari’s and Lamborghini’s (mostly in red) parked outside, but the beauty and quiet ambience within. Not so on August 18, 1913 when a stunning and now famous event took place at their roulette table. On that date black came up a record twenty-six times in a row and there was a near-panicky to bet on red, beginning around the time the ball landed on black fifteen consecutive times. Players were in a red-betting frenzy, doubling and tripling their stakes after black came up the twentieth time. They all believed there wasn’t a chance in a million of another black landing. And so it went for 26 spins with the casino winning millions of francs. Gamblers lost millions of francs, in fact, due to the mistaken belief that this unusual streak somehow caused an imbalance in the randomness of the wheel. Be assured that before tossing the dice or flipping a coin there is a fixed probability that is not biased by recent but past events.
Video Poker Fallacy:
The Monte Carlo Fallacy, also called the gambler’s fallacy, has eked its way into all forms of gaming. For example, people playing slots will continue feeding a machine because they are convinced that it’s “due” for a win or that somebody else will come along and win “their” money. Whether the slot machine won or lost in the recent past has zero to do with predicting future spins. Video poker is just like tossing the dice or flipping deoPoker_1/3page_vp ad.qxpprevious 10/12/09but 12:31 PM Page 1 can’t a coin - in that; recent results
be used to predict future outcomes. Before each coin toss the odds of landing on heads or tails are equal or 50/50 regardless of the previous flip. As Arthur Conan Doyle said (“The Complete Sherlock Holmes”), “It is easy to be wise after the event.”
Understanding the Data: To clarify how hand frequency data can be used to indicate the odds of specific winning hands I’ll refer to Table 1.1. Here you’ll see how often each hand occurs in 9/6 Double Double Bonus (9/6DDB), one of the most popular video poker games on the casino floor. Table 1.1: 9/6DDB Hand Frequency Hand: 9/6DDB Royal Straight Flush 4 Aces with 2, 3 or 4

Note that I rounded occurrences to the nearest whole number. Notice that 4 Aces with a kicker occurs once every 16,799 hands. Even those with poor math skills understand that it’s a rare event and that’s precisely why the casino can offer such a big return on this hand. Before the game starts the

odds are the same, even if you just had the Aces with a kicker. So you can get back-to-back Royals or Aces with the kicker. It’s possible but improbable, therefore it makes a good story. On the other hand there are players at the wrong end of the bell-shaped curve who may go several royal cycles without a royal. (A royal cycle is the theoretical number of hands before a royal, in this game it’s 40,799.) The important thing to understand by studying this table is that before each game begins your odds are constant, assuming correct play, regardless of the end results in previous hands.
Using the Results: You should always play according to Zamzow (wrote the WinPoker software for 100% accurate play) regardless of previous results. Just like the Monte Carlo roulette players who lost their shirts in 1913, you will make costly errors in the long run anytime you play video poker using hunches or past results. Just because you have held three Aces several times instead of a dealt full house in 9/6DDB but failed to get the fourth Ace does not mean you should change from the correct playing strategy. In 9/6DDB, you should always hold just the three Aces going for the fourth Ace instead of the full house. (You will find free strategy cards in the back of my book “The Video Poker Edge” for the core games available in casinos. Each game requires a separate strategy based on winning hand payouts.)
Final Thoughts: If anybody in 1913 Monte Carlo roulette game were alive today they’d probably still be lamenting their gambler’s remorse for their strategy fallacy. Smart video poker players should always use mathematically correct strategy and never believe past hands on a device will influence future results. Linda Boyd ,a long-time table game player before turning to video poker, also writes for “Southern Gaming” and “Midwest Gaming and Travel” her book, “The Video Poker Edge”, includes free removable pay schedules and free strategy cards for the most popular games. Look for her story in the latest editions of “American Casino Guide” (ACG) and her YouTube videos, also with ACG. The 2010 Second Edition of her book is available in both paperback and kindle. he seat to the right of the Dealer is called third by TJ Jorgensen base. Many players won’t sit there because they believe that player controls the flow of the cards, and a bad play by this player can ruin the game for everyone. While you will remember a bad play that caused you to lose a hand, in the long run it has no effect on your outcome. Stupid players help you just as much as the hurt you, the problem is you only remember the ones that caused you to lose. The intimidation of this seat will cause many players not to sit there or will cause them to play hands incorrectly as to not mess up the cards. If you were sitting at third base and you had the hand of 12 vs the dealer up card of 2, how many of you would hit it even though it is the correct basic strategy play. If you deviate from basic strategy so you don’t get rude comments from the other play-
12 ARIZONA PLAYER March 2014
ers, you will cost yourself money. You have to eliminate intimidation from your game. Its tough enough to make money playing blackjack so you have to play the hands correctly. I personally like to sit at third base and since I am a card counter my strategy is different than basic strategy. For example when my count is negative, I hit 12 vs a dealer up card of 4. It drives the other players crazy and I am often told that I need to learn how to play the game by other players. But these are the same players that can’t understand how I ended up winning while they lost at the end of the day. In fact, I like it when other players get mad and leave the table. I prefer one on one with the dealer because I can get 200 hands in an hour as opposed to only 60 with a full table. Since I have a long term advantage over the Casino it helps me get to the long run expected outcome quicker. Have you ever run across the self-proclaimed
blackjack expert at your table? The one who always tells you how you should have played your hand after it’s over. I don’t talk much when I’m playing but not to long ago I doubled Ace -8 vs a dealer up card of a 6 and caught a 10, then the dealer caught a 5 to make 21 and beat everyone. When “Mr. Blackjack expert” asked why I did that I simply replied if you don’t know, this game is going to cost you a lot of money. That shut him up because he knew that I knew. So if the correct play is to hit our 12 against the dealers 3, or hit your Ace-7 vs the dealer 9, do it. Don’t let any player or seat intimidate you. T.J. Jorgensen has been a professional Blackjack player for over 20 years. He is well known for his live tournament play. He has competed against, and beaten, some of the top tournament players in the world and has won the prestigious World Series of Blackjack. lottery news JUMBO WIN FOR BIG FAMILY!
CASH IS GOOD – CLASSIC CASH, BETTER!
Graciela Chavez and her family squeezed into their SUV and drove to Phoenix from Flagstaff. It was an exciting day, as Graciela was the possessor of a $100,000 winning Jumbo Bucks instant scratch ticket. She stated that she had 50 grandchildren, so not everyone could come. Graciela purchased two Jumbo Bucks from the counter at Carter Fuels at 1322 East Route 66 in Flagstaff. She likes the game and always plays it. She scratched the tickets outside in the parking lot. Although she knew what she’d won, she still had the store clerk check it just to be sure. Although Graciela occasionally plays Powerball, she prefers playing instant scratch tickets. She usually buys tickets a couple of times a week, preferring the $2, $5, and $10 tickets. The difficult part of this win was that Gabriella knew she’d won Friday, but had to wait until Tuesday to redeem her ticket because the Lottery was closed that Monday. It was a very long weekend for Graciela and everyone around her. She has no special plans for the money, but will share with her family. The winning ticket was purchased at Carter Fuels, 1322 E. Route 66, Flagstaff.
Felipe Ordonez of Phoenix likes to play Classic Cash instant scratch tickets. He recently purchased two tickets when he was at a retailer at about 30th street and east Bell Road. He scratched the tickets at home and knew right away he had a winner. Just to be sure, he took it to a store to be checked. There was no mistake; he’d won $500,000! Felipe buys instant scratch tickets whenever he can spare the money. He usually purchases $5 and $10 tickets, only buying $20 tickets when he has extra cash. He prefers instant scratch tickets to the draw games because of the instant gratification, but when Powerball or Mega Millions jackpots are high, he’ll try his luck. Felipe has worked as a custodian for a church for the past eleven years and loves his job and the people he works with. At the time of this interview, he had not yet told his family of his good fortune. One thing he would like to do with his money is to pay off his house. Also, he’ll be able to pay for his daughters to get braces. The Arizona Lottery operates entirely from the revenue it generates through the sale of its products; it receives no General Fund dollars from the State. Proceeds from sales of Lottery tickets – nearly $3.4 million per week - fund a variety of state programs. Since July 1981, the Arizona Lottery has paid out more than $5.4 billion in prizes to players, more than $3 billion in net funding to the state and more than $638 million in commissions to retailers. gaming news “WHEEL” Big Winner at TALKING STICK RESORT! Lady luck was with MariAnne Bort on March 1 when she played Talking Stick Resort’s Wheel of Fortune Triple Spin and won nearly half a million dollars. The Phoenix-native dominated the television-themed slot machine and became the property’s latest jackpot winner, receiving a massive payout of $464,863.92! “Players visit Talking Stick Resort with the ultimate dream of a big win,” said Ramon Martinez, director of public relations for Talking Stick Resort. “Our facility is no stranger to daily jackpots, but that doesn’t diminish the excitement we feel when a deserving person claims such a huge prize.” Designed after the popular television program, Wheel of Fortune Triple Spin is one of 700 slot machines offered at Talking Stick Resort. This is the second time the game has been hit since Gerald Allen Phillips, Jr. of Mesa won $5.7 million two years ago. Additional fan favorites featured on the casino floor include Tully’s Treasure Hunt, Texas Dice, Dolly Parton, Cherry Chance and Shining Seven just to name a few. Ravingperspectives by Dennis Conrad
Nearly 1/3 of all Native American children aged 2-5 are obese…. ...and that’s why Raving is getting involved with the NB3 Foundation. A while back in another Raving Perspectives….I reached out to all 4,600 of you, asking if you knew a good charity where I and my company could get involved and make a difference. So first of all, thank you to the dozens of you who responded, recommending numerous outstanding charities that would be worthy of Raving's long-term involvement and commitment. I'm excited to tell you today that we have selected that singular charity -- the Notah Begay III Foundation or simply, NB3F. More importantly, NB3F has been gracious in welcoming our involvement. So why NB3F? And why not the Humane Society? Or the National Center for Childhood Grief? Or Rotary International? Or Fare Start? Or any of the dozens of other suggestions of charity involvement for Raving? It was simple, really. NB3F met all of my criteria. It benefits an industry that my company serves. I believe in its mission and goals, helping Native American youth get healthier. There IS a known cure for the health issues addressed -- obesity and type-2 diabetes. It does welcome my involvement and commitment, not just a one-time donation. On a personal level, Notah Begay of the NB3 Foundation is a Stanford alum and a former member of the Stanford Golf Team. So am I, even if I now probably qualify as a hacker in golf. It just all feels right. And what that means is that Raving is going to attempt to raise money for the NB3 Foundation over the coming years, and use our voice and communication network to raise awareness of youth health issues in the Native American community. So, when you're asked to make a $10 donation for NB3F at the door of a (previously free) Raving Insider Party at a gaming industry trade show; or you're invited to join a core group of "Gaming Friends of NB3"; or your gaming company is requested to sponsor a golf or soccer clinic for Native American youth -- you'll know where Raving and I are coming from. And hopefully you'll join us.The NB3 Foundation -- it's not the only great and important charitable effort. But right now, it's mine. Sincerely,
Dennis
Glad to Be Involved Again PS -- To learn more about the Notah Begay III Foundation and its work with Native American youth, or to make a donation, please visit www.nb3foundation.org.

Does 90 look possible?
A reasonable request
Willie turned 70 and after a visit and several lab tests, the new doctor told Willie that he looked pretty good for his age. The rejuvenated senior asked the doctor if he thought he might live to reach 90?
A good friend of mine was shopping recently at an upscale department store and asked an attractive sales lady to help him choose a pair of gloves his wife needed for a formal affair that evening –
The physician then asked “Do you smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol to excess?”
Problem was, he didn’t know her size. The helpful saleslady smiled, then put her hand in his hand and asked, “Does this help?”
“Heck no” replied Willie “I’ve never done drugs either?
“OH YES” he said, your hand is almost exactly her size”
“Do you stay up all night at wild parties?” “Of course not” said Willie, “I stay at home mostly”
Then she asked “Is there anything else I can help you with?”
The doc asked “Do you enjoy steaks, barbecued ribs , Buffalo wings, loaded baked potatoes and desserts?” Willie shook his head, “NO WAY! That stuff is bad for your health” Do you spend lots of time outdoors playing golf, sailing, hiking or bicycling?” “No Doc” said Willie, “I stay mostly inside, that sun is a killer” “Do you gamble, drive fast cars or date lots of women?” “No…I don’t do any of those things” replied Willie. The doctor looked puzzled and finally replied – “Willie…..it beats the hell out of me, why you even care!”

DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR Non-Stop Liam Neeson is back in his annual first quarter of the year action flick. This time he is a troubled air marshal who gets bizarre text messages on his secure phone while on a transatlantic flight. Soon whoever is sending them is by David Ramsey promising to kill someone on the plane every 20 minutes unless $150 million dollars is wired to an offshore account. It gets really tense when the first person dies and the account turns out to be in his name. He’s being set up but why and how. Tense with good action “Non-Stop” will have your heart racing.
David’s Video Details Frozen
Veronica Mars It’s been nine years since Veronica left Neptune California and her days as a teenage detective behind. Having recently passed the New York BAR she is about to land a job with a prestigious law firm when her past calls her back. A friend from high school has been murdered and her ex=boy friend is the chief suspect. What she thinks will be a quick trip to help pick the defense team turns into a full-blown investigation that proves nothing has changed. If you liked the series you will love this extended episode.
Anna’s older sister Elsa will one day be queen but she stays hidden away, secluded from her sister and it baffles Anna because they used to have such good times together. When tragedy strikes Elsa is crowned queen and she reluctantly joins the festivities. Suddenly her secret creates havoc as her icy powers run rampant trapping her kingdom in eternal winter. Elsa runs away but Anna is determined to find her and prove she is the sister she remembers. Disney’s version of the “Snow Queen” is far better than any other and its one their best ‘Princess’ movies. There is humor and action for all ages.
Saving Mr. Banks
Walt Disney has been trying to get the film rights to “Mary Poppins” for 20 years. He has finally convinced the author, P. L. Travers, to come to Los Angeles and meet the writers before saying no again. Ms. Travers dislikes everything about Disney’s movies and if she didn’t need the money wouldn’t be there. Between arguing with the Sherman Brothers about the score and the writers about the script - no animation, she screams - she reflects on her childhood. The cast is amazing - you would swear that Walt himself is on the screen. “Saving Mr. Banks” is a wonderful Hollywood story for everyone. David Ramsey is the President and co-founder of the Phoenix Film Critics Society and a member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (The Critics Choice Awards). Watch his reviews on the CBS 5 Morning News every Friday between 5:30 and 6:30am and on ABC-15’s “Sonoran Living Live” every other Friday. Read more of his DVD reviews at WildAboutMovies. com.
