Avoiding The Big Loss
ne of the keys to showing a profit from blackjack play month after month is to avoid the big loss. Part of playing winning Blackjack is to understand that losses are to be expected and when they occur accept it. Emotions have no place in this. If you lose and get mad, you will start chasing lost money with more money and when the dust has settled you probably will have dug yourself a hole so deep that you can’t recover, and you end up walking out of the casino talking to yourself. How many times have you bought in for $40 and didn’t have to get back into your pocket the remainder of your playing session? That’s when it’s fun to play blackjack, the down side is there are times when $40 doesn’t last ten minutes and you’re right back in your bankroll. How a player reacts under these circumstances is what separates the pro player from the recreational player. When a losing situation arises a pro blackjack player understands that it’s not going to be their day and has the discipline to walk away with a small loss. The recreational player will lose a $100 then continue to play until all of their money is gone. If you lose $100 and it’s not your day - you will probably lose $500, that’s just the way it usually goes.
12 ARIZONA PLAYER May 2014
Rather than continue to play when you’re on a horrible losing streak, have enough discipline to accept and walk away. It is a lot easier to come back later that day or the next day and only have to make up $100 rather than to try to make up $500 or more. A tool that I recommend to help you stay disciplined is to keep a log book of each time you play, what you won or lost. Some players have no idea how much they have lost, but this will help you be honest with yourself and keep losses to a minimum. When I sit down to play Blackjack I have a small advantage over the casino because I am a card counter, and although I know I will win in the long run, I know that in the short run anything can and will happen. Just like someone flipping a coin and getting ten heads in a row, the dealers’ first ten hands may be six hands of twenty and four blackjacks. Even though you would only expect the dealer to have a Blackjack once every twenty one hands. In the short run, dealer results like this can and do happen. When a situation like this arises I accept that it’s not my day and walk with a small loss. However I know that in the long run, just like flipping a coin 1000 times the percentages will be true to the expected outcome and I will end up a winner.
So the next time the dealer is unbeatable, don’t get mad, just walk away and think of it as someone flipping a coin ten times and getting ten heads in a row. You know that it can happen, and on this day the dealer was lucky, but just remember you too will have your days of good fortune and walk away with pockets full of cash.

lottery news A Cash Bonanza for Alice!
The Pick Ticket Claimed for $3.3 Million!
On April 21st the Arizona Lottery announced that a $1 million winning Million Dollar Cash Bonanza Scratchers ticket sold in Phoenix has been claimed. Alice Lewis, a caregiver from Phoenix, purchased her top prize-winning Million Dollar Cash Bonanza ticket from the Fry’s at 520 E. Baseline Road in Phoenix. Alice scratched the winning ticket in her car after buying it at the Lottery vending machine and thought she had only won $1,000. But after reviewing the ticket again, she realized it was actually a top prize winner of $1 million and took it back into the store to have it verified by a clerk. Alice has no immediate plans for the money other than investing it for when she retires in a year. “It’s always exciting to present a $1 million check to our players in Arizona,” said Karen Bach, director of budget, products and communications for the Arizona Lottery. “There is still one Cash Bonanza $1 million top prize ticket remaining, and we look forward to presenting that check to the future winner.” Million Dollar Cash Bonanza Scratchers tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at any Arizona Lottery retailer.
The Arizona Lottery announced the winning ticket for the $3.3 million The Pick jackpot for the drawing on Saturday, April 26 was claimed on May 9th. Robert Brito, a public servant from Phoenix, purchased the winning The Pick ticket at the QuikTrip located at 6702 West Glendale Avenue in Glendale. Brito purchased a single Quick Pick® for the Saturday drawing, but didn’t check his numbers until the following Wednesday morning. He called his daughter to double-check the winning numbers, but waited to tell the rest of his family until he got home from work. Brito met with a financial advisor before redeeming the ticket. Robert and his wife Anna haven’t decided what they are going to do with their winnings, but said he is thankful to God and plans to enjoy life one day at a time. “Robert and Anna are a humble couple and presenting them with a check for Arizona’s own jackpot game was an honor,” said Karen Bach, director of budget, products and communications for the Arizona Lottery. The next drawing for The Pick is Saturday, May 10 for an estimated $1.2 million jackpot. Tickets can be purchased at any Arizona Lottery retailer. Players can check their tickets by visiting ArizonaLottery.com.

Players must be 21 years or older to purchase or redeem tickets. Winners have 180 days from the drawing date to claim their prize at an Arizona Lottery office or by mail. Overall odds vary by game. Expected Return (ER): The theoretical return 012 was a stellar for a VP game is based solely on the pay schedule year for poker great Phil Ivey, but and the assumption that players play accurately. the man with the 9 WSOP If you practice at home on tutorial software (I recby ommend WinPoker) holding the correct cards is Linda Boyd (World Series of Poker) fairly easy. If not perfect, you will at least be close bracelets was playing to the ER by playing most hands correctly. So while Punto Banco, a form of baccarat, not Texas short-term play may have a lot to do with sitting on Hold’Em. Also, he has yet to collect the $12mila horse shoe, over the long run you can expect your lion owed by Crockfords, a British casino owned return to reflect the one on the pay schedule for by Malaysia-based Genting group, and is being sued for the $9.6 million he won at Atlantic City’s the game you chose. Although the casino will have the pay table on the device they will not give you Borgata. So what happened and what does this the ER percentage. You will find that information have to do with video poker? What happened is Ivey took advantage of a defect on removable tables in my book, “The Video Poker in playing cards produced by Gemaco Inc., a Kansas Edge”. Ivey, of course, knows this fact applies to any game with a skill component (even more so City card manufacturer - Briefly, the technique to Punto Banco where, unlike poker, “tells” and is called edge-sorting and allows the player to psychological factors are irrelevant). So if it’s JOB, choose 9/6JOB house. Of course Ivey had to have an unsuspecting dealer turn the cards a certain way prior to using an over 8/5JOB and learn to check before you find a seat. automatic shuffling device in an effort to knowing Gambling Ethics: People may disagree over whether the first card leaving the shoe was “good” whether exploiting a casino’s error is ethical or or “bad”. Who stands up for the player you play the greater the likelihood that odds in live when 6/5JOB (ER 94.9961% versus 9/6JOB with an play will resemble theoretical expectations. The earned cash? In the case of Ivey - the casino, not first is to pay attention to the game’s ER (expected return) and the second is to do some soul searching Ivey, purchased the cards and decided to humor VideoPoker_1/3page_vp ad.qxp 10/12/09 12:31 PM Page 1 him with his “superstitions”. allowing him to potentially lose millions due to their house advantage, but when the “shoe” is on the other foot (as in shuffling device) they cry foul. Final Thoughts: Nobody expects you to be in Ivey’s “League” at VP much less the felt game, but we can all learn from this poker great. You should recognize the importance of knowing the ER for your VP game as well as the basic game strategy. If the casino offers a video poker game giving you, the player, an advantage you should deposit your money in the device without the slightest feeling of guilt. Really there’s no surefire way to know whether there’s a glitch in the progressive meter (when the jackpot is growing extremely fast) or a mistake on the pay table when certain hands are over-paying. Mostly, the house will have the advantage and you’ll be there for entertainment not to walk out with millions courtesy of the house.

DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR
The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Peter and Gwen have reached a crossroads in their relationship, Peter’s old friend Harry returns to take over Oscorp - Peter finds our more about his father and a series of super-villains show up to challenge SpiderMan. There is a lot going on in one of the few by super-hero movies where the story doesn’t take David Ramsey second place to the action. Oh, there is plenty of action what with Electro, the Green Goblin and the Rhino all out to get the web-slinger and it is spectacular, but it’s the relationships that are the heart of the story and the film. If you don’t know the comic book series you will be in for a shock, and if you do - don’t tell anyone. The cast is terrific and the writing just might be the best in the Marvel Universe so far.
Neighbors Mac and Kelly have a new baby and moved into their dream house, everything is going perfectly until the fraternity moves in next door. At first they try to be friends with them but before long it turns into all out war. After they call the police with a noise complaint the frat pulls out all the stops leaving the sleep deprived couple to try to retaliate. The pranks are good and a at least one is surprisingly hilarious (unless you have seen the TV commercial which gives it away). While there is nothing remotely believable about “Neighbors” it is funny without being completely over-the-top stupid or gross and it has a good cast.
David’s Video Details 3 Days to Kill
Ethan is the best at what he does but when he is told he is dying his regret is that is not close to his daughter. He is offered an experimental drug that could prolong his life, giving him time to reconnect with her, if he does one more job. He agrees to track down and stop a ruthless terrorist while looking after his teenage daughter. Reconnecting with his daughter maybe the toughest thing he has ever done. A good cast and a fun script with lots of action make “3 Days to Kill” a very entertaining film.
The Veronica Mars Movie
It’s been nine years since Veronica left Neptune California and her days as a teenage detective behind. Having recently passed the New York BAR she is about to land a job with a prestigious law firm when her past calls her back. A friend from high school has been murdered and her ex-boy friend is the chief suspect. What she thinks will be a quick trip to help pick the defense team turns into a full-blown investigation that proves nothing has changed. If you liked the series you will love this extended episode.
I. Frankenstein
When Victor Frankenstein dies his creature buries him only to be attacked by demons. He is saved by Gargoyles and learns that they are the angels left behind to protect the humans from the demons. He refuses to get involved in their war and disappears. When he returns 200 years later he discovers that the demon leader wants his creator’s notes to build an army to finally defeat the Gargoyles and rule mankind. This film has nothing to do with the original novel and while the effects are very cool the story is lacking in every way. David Ramsey is the President and co-founder of the Phoenix Film Critics Society and a member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (The Critics Choice Awards). Watch his reviews on the CBS 5 Morning News every Friday between 5:30 and 6:30am and on ABC-15’s “Sonoran Living Live” every other Friday. Read more of his DVD reviews at WildAboutMovies. com. bet. One of the most appealing advantages of this popular game is the trips bonus which pays odds if a players final five-card hand is a three-of-a-kind or better. Dearest Redneck Son, I’m writing this real slow, because I know you can’t read that well. We don’t live where we did when you left home. Your dad read in the newspaper that most accidents happen within 20 miles of your home, so we moved. I won’t be able to send you the address because the last family that lived here took the house numbers with them so they wouldn’t have to change their address. This place is really nice. We’ve only been here a week, but I discovered the previous renters left us a washing machine - But, I’m having some trouble with it. I put a load of clothes in, pulled the handle and the clothes just disappeared. So I ain’t using it again till Uncle Willie checks it out. The weather’s not bad - only rained twice last week - first time for three days, second time for another four days. About that coat you wanted me to send you - Uncle Jim Bob said it would cost too much to mail with them big brass buttons on, so we cut the buttons off and put them in the pockets. Your sister had a baby this morning- that makes an even dozen - But I haven’t found out what it is yet, so I don’t know if you are an aunt or uncle. Oh and some sad news, Uncle Leroy fell into a whiskey vat at work last week. Some men tried to pull him out - but he fought them off and drowned. We had him cremated; but it cost extra cause he burned for nearly three days. Nothing much else is goin on. Your favorite Aunt, Mom
After 35 years of marriage, Tony and Maria opted for counseling. When asked what the problem was, Maria went into a passionate tirade listing every problem they had ever had since their honeymoon. She complained of neglect, lack of intimacy, emptiness, of feeling unloved, on and on Maria continued with a laundry list of unmet needs she had endured. Finally, she stopped as Tony starred at the ceiling rolled his eyes and shook his head – At that point the therapist got up, walked around his desk, asked Maria to stand, then embraced and kissed her passionately as Tony watched with a raised eyebrow. Maria was stunned and sat quietly as though in a daze. The therapist turned to Tony and said, “This is what your wife needs - at least 5 times a week…..Can you do this?” “Well, replied Tony….I can drop her off here Monday thru Thursday…..but Friday, I bowl in a league.” Do people tell you “You’re FUNNY – you really can tell a joke” – Then send your funny story (200 words max) to azplayer@cox.net If I use your joke – I’ll Send you a $50 gift card to your favorite store or restaurant. So what are you waiting for, I’m not Joking!
